in costumes they created, students took to the stage and presented poetry and sang Thanksgivingthemed songs such as “Albuquerque Turkey” and “Thanks a lot.” At the conclusion of their presentation, they sat together and enjoyed a delicious Thanksgiving feast of fruit and muffins. In addition to their studies on the Thanksgiving holiday, second-grade students in Nicholas Coppola’s class explored a celebration of culture and holidays around the world, highlighting Hanukkah, which this year falls the day before Thanksgiving. To enhance students’ learning, parents visited the classroom to show students how to make latkes and play the dreidle, and to discuss the theory behind lighting a menorah.

Colder temperatures, shorter days and the approaching holiday season can cause some people to experience bouts of sadness or depression. This may be due to Seasonal Affective Disorder, commonly known as SAD. SAD is a depression that occurs each year at the same time, usually starting in fall or winter and ending in spring or early summer. This mood disorder is often attributed to the shorter days and lack of sunlight during the colder months of the year. Between 10 and 20 percent of the U.S. population may suffer from mild symptoms associated with the disorder. Three-quarters of those are women. Symptoms of SAD can include: • Excessive sleeping or feelings of extreme fatigue; • Overeating and weight gain during the fall or winter; • Inability to maintain regular lifestyle schedule;

• Depression (feelings of sadness, loss of feelings, apathy) and irritability; • Lack of interest in social interactions, losing interest in activities of enjoyment; SAD is a diagnosable disorder that may require treatment. Healthfirst and NuHealth/Nassau University Medical Center host the grand finale of the fourth annual 2013 Long Island Youth Singing Contest on Saturday, December 7th at Circulo de la Hispanidad in Hempstead, 605 Peninsula Boulevard, from 1 to 4 p.m. A total of 24 finalists, ages 9-18, will compete for the grand prize of $600 for 1st Place, $400 for 2nd Place, and $300 for 3rd Place. To help to whet the appetites of the Webelos Scouts as they learned about what to expect on entering their local Boy Scout Troop next year, the Matinecock District (Boy Scouts of America), held its 14th annual Webelos Woods event, as 27 Cub Scout Packs and 21 Boy Scout Troops assembled at Cathedral Pines County Park in Middle Island during an overnight camping trip. The Boy Scout Troops and Cub Packs from the Commack, Kings Park, and Hauppauge areas of Smithtown Township and from the entire Town of Huntington began the weekend event with an opening flag raising and ceremony. Saturday’s events had the 4th and 5th grade Webelos Scouts participating in instructions at various skill events and competitions. Scoutcraft knowledge and how-to’s were explained and demonstrated by Boy Scouts troops in the Matinecock District,

and this was followed by hands-on experiences for the youths as they completed eleven Scouting skills stations and learned even more by participating at several other demonstrations. Boy Scouts taught and reviewed how to tie knots, as well as to whip loose ends of ropes, and the Webelos Scouts were able to cross a monkey bridge. They were able to complete some of the requirements for the Webelos Scout Readyman Activity Pin during discussions, instructions, and demonstrations for First Aid. After receiving proper building and safety instructions at the firebuilding station on the various types and uses of fires (for cooking or heat or a general all-purpose type of fire-lay), the Webelos demonstrated their new knowledge by starting a fire and also burned a string at 18” from the base of the fire pit. They also watched demonstrations and did hands-on cooking

Into The Black By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Black Friday. As I sit here writing my column from home at 11:15 p.m. on Thanksgiving night, my alarm clock is set for 5 a.m. tomorrow morning. Why, you ask, would I subject myself to the madness that has become a tradition for thousands of manic shoppers desperately scouring stores for the best bargains? Because it’s fun. Although, I will admit, I wasn’t sold on the idea until recently. Prior to my first Black Friday shopping experience, I was one who would wait until the week of Christmas to even begin, occasionally

even making a last-minute mall run on Christmas Eve. No list, no direction – just aimless wandering until the “perfect” gift caught my eye. I hated shopping and everything that came with it – the crowds, the long lines, the even longer return/ exchange lines… all of it. Well, the lack of preparation remains the same. Still no list, no real ideas to speak of… but I have developed a bit more tolerance for the shopping end of things. Perhaps now that I am older and have more means to show my appreciation to those I love, I see the value in putting a bit more effort into things.

Not that you will ever catch me in a store on Thanksgiving itself. The holiday is exactly that – a holiday – and should be celebrated and savored as such. Plenty of time to shop in the month following; beginning on Black Friday just seems to add a little extra excitement to the process. Call me crazy. Call me a convert to the madness. Whatever. And with that, I had better get some sleep. I have a long day of shopping ahead of me tomorrow. Enjoy your Thanksgiving leftovers, make your list, check it twice – and maybe I’ll see you on line at the store.

The Webelos Scouts were able to earn their Whitlin’ Chit cards (instruction on safety, the proper use, sharpening, and care of knives as they enter the Boy Scout program) by using a plastic knife to carve a bar of soap. The Webelos Scouts with their adult leaders, parents or guardians visited the Boy Scout Troops at the various stations and their campsites to help them in their decision-making as to which troop to join when they become eligible to join a Boy Scout Troop. While the scouts were participating in the learning experiences at the various stations during the Webelos Woods event, two adult Scouting volunteers took part in the training opportunities by participating in the Youth Protection Training seminar that had been offered. The full day’s program concluded with a Saturday evening campfire program of skits and songs and a Wood Badge Beads presentation, the opportunity to participate at the Celebration of the Catholic Mass, a Jewish Scout Halvdahlah (end of the Sabbath Day) service, a Brotherhood Ceremony for 19 Boy Scouts who are members of the Order of the Arrow, as well as participation in the “made in the campsite dessert contest.” Closing ceremonies on Sunday morning included an interfaith “Scouts Own” service, presentation of a commemorative patch for each participant and a ribbon for the Pack and Troop flags. The winner of the “made at the campsite in a cardboard box oven” dessert contest went to Cub Scout Pack 406 (Melville) who baked their dessert in a box oven at their campsite. On November 24th, the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium officially unveiled the newly-restored “Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium,” named to recognize an extremely generous donation to the Museum by the Reichert family of Fort Salonga! Their donation will encompass $1.75 million over the span of twenty

years and it signifies the largest contribution to the museum in its history by someone who is not a member of the Vanderbilt family. Since it’s reopening in March after a complete $4 million renovation, the Planetarium has played host to hundreds of visitors each day, many of which are school children, and, with their contribution

to an already-stellar institution, the Reichert family is ensuring that it will continue to flourish for many years to come. It was for their commitment to the Vanderbilt Museum and the education of our young children that Mr. and Mrs. Reichert were honored at the Planetarium’s unveiling.

Training For The Game

The Ride for Life Organization, which raises funds and awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, has earmarked $160,000 for Stony Brook University in 2014 to support ALS research and clinical care. A portion of these funds ($100,000) will be the latest installment from the Ride for Life to support the development of ALS clinical trials at the Stony Brook Neurosciences Institute. The pledge is in conjunction with the match

from the Simons Foundation Challenge Grant. The $60,000 slated for clinical care services at Stony Brook’s Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, an ALS Association Certified Center providing comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for patients, will come directly from the ALS Association but is based on funds available from the Ride for Life. “Without the cooperation and support of the Stony Brook University community, the Ride for Life would

not have achieved our unbelievable level of success,” said Christopher Pendergast, a 21-year ALS patient and advocate, and Founder and President of the Ride for Life. “The ALS community is grateful for what Stony Brook University has helped us achieve.” Since its inception in 1998, the Ride for Life has provided more than $1.7 million in funds for ALS research and $1.1 million to support ALS clinical care and patient services nationwide. $700,000 has been donated to Stony Brook University for the Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence and Stony Brook neuroscience research in search of a cure for this fatal neurodegenerative disease. The Ride for Life has slated $500,000 for Stony Brook research and clinical trials spread over a five-year period, ending in 2017, which is matched by the Simons Foundation, providing a total impact of $1 million for the effort. Pendergast emphasized that an ongoing focus of the organization is to support research that can lead to clinical trials of new treatments against ALS that improve upon current treatments, slow down the disease process or cure ALS. “Neuroscience is getting ever closer to the goal of finding new approaches to treating ALS and other devastating neurodegenerative diseases,” said Dennis Choi, MD, PhD, Professor and Chair, Department of Neurology and Director of the Neurosciences Institute. “With Stony Brook’s expertise in neuroscience research, we hope to contribute importantly to this global effort.” In 2014, the Ride for Life will provide additional funds to other organizations in the region, expanding services such as home nursing care and handicapped loaner vans designed to make mobility for patients and their families more manageable. Funds for the organization’s “Care for Life” program, which provides a one-time grant to support home respite care, will be increased per individual patient recipient. The Ride for Life will also continue its support of Long Island high school seniors who have a family member affected by ALS with its college scholarship program. Some 40 high school students have received scholarships over the past six years. Next year $6,000 in scholarships will be announced sometime in February. Most of the funds generated by the Ride for Life organization can be attributed to the annual Ride for Life event that occurs during ALS Awareness Month each May. The 2014 event begins on May 5. Prior to that, the Ride for Life will hold its Bike Trek, a multilength bicycle fundraiser that courses through the Stony Brook University Campus on April 27th.
