The Harry Report By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I was recently asked by a longtime friend and reader of this column for an update on “Harry.” For those who may have missed Chapters I & II, Harry is my slightly psychotic goldfish, purchased for all of 17¢ to serve as a “friend” to another fish I had won at a local carnival. Well, one week later, “Harvey” the carnie fish was floating upside down and Harry was riding solo. Now, nearly two months later, he is still enjoying his reign of the fishbowl,

alternately cowering behind (or amongst the branches) of his tree, and darting madly from one side (do round bowls have “sides”?) to the other, occasionally clunking into the glass as he zigs when he should have zagged. Hopefully, there hasn’t been any permanent brain damage. It’s difficult to tell for sure. One of his favorite pastimes seems to be watching me cook. As I prepare the food on the counter, he eagerly watches, as if hoping for a morsel to taste. I suppose it would be a nice change

from his dried flakes, although he does manage to suck those down with the ferocity of a small, finned Hoover®. So that’s the update on Harry, for all who care to know. Hopefully, he’ll survive the holiday season and ring in the New Year with us all. Who knows, maybe Santa will even bring him a new fishy friend if he’s good! Although, based on the last experiment in cohabitation, perhaps I should leave well enough alone. ‘Til then, Happy Holidays from Harry.

Brookhaven Memorial Hospital held its 2014 Hospital Ball on November 15th. This year, guests donned Venetian Masks to add to the festivities. The event had over 460 attendees dining and dancing at East Wind Inn & Spa in Wading River. Some of them expressed their creative side with masks ranging from the court jester worn by attendees, Ralph Maust, and John Sullivan to the distinctive long nose Zanni mask sported by past Chairman of the Board, Robert Schwartz. Still others took the liberty of expanding the scope of

the traditional Venetian masks and wore Batman and Phantom of the Opera, with one fellow deciding on the scream mask, quite the unusual choice. Nevertheless, the evening was an elegant affair that raised over $640,000 dollars to help fund our Knapp Cardiac Care Center currently under construction on the north side of the Hospital campus. Brookhaven was proud to honor Nicholas H. Racanelli, of Racanelli Construction Co. Inc., as the recipient of the Community Service Award. Nick’s generous

Today, generosity took the form of the Townwide Fund of Huntington, who donated $3,000 to Toys of Hope to replenish their food reserves. The Townwide Fund made the emergency contribution after 50 boxes of food, enough to feed more than 170 families, were stolen from the Toys of Hope warehouse facility in Huntington Station. “The Townwide Fund has the ability to mobilize quickly and help those in our community with an immediate and unexpected need,” said Executive Director Trish Rongo. “This demonstrates yet another way we fulfill our mission - that money raised in Huntington helps those in Huntington.”

The Townwide Fund bridges the gap between governmental support for local charities and the increasing needs of local residents. Toys of Hope operates all year and has created many programs that provide desperately needed goods and services to assist families in becoming selfsufficient, as well as helping to improve the lives of the children of those families. “I want to thank the Toys of Hope and the Townwide Fund for their constant support for the residents of Huntington,” said Suffolk County Legislator William R. Spencer, M.D. (D-Centerport). “Given the circumstances, however, I want to particularly thank the Townwide Fund for

Caring For Granite Countertops (NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling. They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars. Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what you clean with: Never use ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon

Edwin volunteered his time to work on this project for his Eagle Scout troop. Four-Star Distinction Earned For the seventh consecutive year, The Northport-East Northport Public Library has earned a four-star rating in Library Journal’s 2014 Index of Public Library Service, a national rating system designed to recognize and promote America’s public libraries. The four-star rating is awarded on the basis of four measures of service, and compares the use of the library to other public libraries of similar size across the country. The four service areas used in evaluating libraries were

patron visits, material circulation, program attendance, and public Internet usage. This year, 7,586 public libraries were surveyed with 258 libraries nationwide receiving star ratings. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great cross-reference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make sure your security patch and anti-virus

software are updated regularly. Consider technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks: Give cash or gift cards. The information on a check—name, signature, address—can be used to steal identity. •Strengthen passwords: Use passwords with at least eight characters, including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember but difficult for predators to guess. • Watch your wallet: Be careful at parties, restaurants, fitness clubs, shopping carts and your car.

• Don’t take the bait on phishing scams: Also, beware of shoulder surfing (when a thief looks over your shoulder while you’re at an ATM, either directly or via a camera). • Stop mail and newspaper delivery when you’ll be away from home. • Consider an identity theft protection service: One low-cost solution monitors the online criminal underground where identities are bought and sold and instantly alerts you if your Social Security number or up to 10 credit card or debit card numbers are posted by thieves. The service also scans online directories and search engines, prime sources for spammers and thieves, letting you know where your information is available, and provides advice on how to remove it. “The lighting of the Big Duck has become a tradition for Suffolk residents as an official kick-off for the holiday season,” said Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone. The Big Duck was constructed in 1931 by Riverhead duck farmer Martin Maurer and his wife Jeule to attract customers to buy their Peking ducks. It measures 30 feet from beak to tail, 15 feet from wing to wing, and 20 feet from its base to the top of its head. In 1987, the Big Duck was donated to the Suffolk County Parks Department and moved to its current location on Route 24 in Flanders. The Big Duck also serves as a tourist information center for the Long Island Convention and Visitors Bureau. The Big Duck Store will be open for the evening, so you can pick-up some eggstraspecial holiday gifts. The Big Duck is located on Route 24 in Flanders, one mile East of the Riverhead Traffic Circle.
