My Buddy Buddy the Betta first entered my life on February 16th, 2015 as a “half-birthday” present to myself, with fingers crossed that this particular foray into the world of pet ownership would fare better than, say, the two carnival goldfish I had adopted the year prior. Little did I know that this little guy – my beautiful, turquoise, delta-finned Buddy – would become exactly that… a friend, a companion, an adopted member of the family, over the next 21 months. Through nearly two years of my life, from holiday gatherings to cozy weekends spent at home, just the two of us, Buddy was a constant. I’m not sure at what point I began to view him as so much more than a pet; but that he was. They say all animals have distinct personalities and characteristics, and Buddy was certainly no exception. Day after day, our routine became such that I swore he recognized me, greeted me, anxiously awaited my arrival home from work. Meal times were met with exuberant fin-waving and flitting to and fro, and the

occasional “betta kisses” on the tip of my finger should I venture too close to the water. Bath times resulted in sulking in the corner, burrowing behind his favorite plant and being downright obstinate when it came time to transfer from his larger, luxurious suite of a tank to his tiny “starter” bowl. Those I told about Buddy initially reacted with skepticism that a mere fish could actually possess almost humanlike qualities. That was, until they met him. It was impossible not to be charmed by this tiny fish with the big fins and the even bigger personality. And boy did he love the attention! It was about six months in that I worked Buddy into my “In Step” column as a “guest columnist,” taking on the role of my spokesfish and taking over the masthead with his “In Swim” moniker. The tremendous feedback I received from readers, the majority of whom were complete strangers, was overwhelming, with some even suggesting the makings of a future children’s book series.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Milestones came and went, from his widely celebrated 1st Betta Birthday, to Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, summer barbeques and everything in between, with Buddy often joining my company in his tiny bowl on the dining room table or setting up shop on the coffee table in front of the television. A better life could not a betta have. Sadly, my little Buddy passed on to fishy heaven just last week. He was a fighter up until the very end, and it was truly devastating to see him go. All pets are irreplaceable, to be sure; but my Buddy holds an extremely special place in my heart, and always will. Thank you to everyone who frequently wrote in to inquire about his wellbeing and for all the support of his guest columns. In this way, he has become somewhat immortalized in print. Life won’t be the same without ya Buddy. Forever my little finned friend… Love, your Human

EAGLE HONOREES - Councilwoman Susan A. Berland honored Stephen J. Breitenbach and Michael R. Mathews on achieving the Boy Scout’s highest rank of Eagle Scout at Troop 78’s latest Court of Honor Ceremony at the Halesite Fire Department.

The Harborfields Central School District held a special reception for their new staff members and four newly tenured staff members on November 16th. Administrators and faculty members gathered for the event at Oldfield Middle School and members of the Harborfields High School Chamber Orchestra performed. Deputy Superintendent of Schools Dr. Francesco Ianni welcomed everyone

to the reception and spoke about Harborfields High School’s latest National Blue Ribbon School honor. He praised those in attendance for their dedication to the district. “Keep up the great work,” he said. “We are a great place because of you.” Assistant Superintendent for Administration and Human Resources Dr. Rory Manning introduced the principals from each school. The principals

recognized one of the four tenured staff members and spoke kind words of encouragement and congratulations. Dr. Manning then presented the new staff members and had each individual stand up as their name was called. He provided a short background for the audience on each new staff member and welcomed them into the Harborfields family.

Elwood-John H. Glenn High School seniors Michael Hermanns and Samantha Ciappa were recently named valedictorian and salutatorian for the graduating Class of 2017. Michael had an eventful start to his senior year by becoming a semifinalist with his brother David Hermanns in the National Merit Scholarship Program. In addition, he plays an active role in the school community as the captain of the cross country team and participates in clubs such as Science Olympiad, Mathletes and Knowledge Masters. Michael also currently balances a hefty course load that includes four

Advanced Placement classes; AP Calculus, AP Statistics, AP Italian and AP Physics. Although he is undecided about what college he will attend yet, Michael hopes to become a business major and start his own business one day. Upon hearing the news of becoming valedictorian, Michael was thrilled. “It’s great,” he said. “A lot of my friends told me that they thought I had a chance, so it’s good to know that four years of hard work paid off for me.” Samantha was also happy to see that her years off hard work did not go unnoticed as she was named salutatorian. “It’s exciting,” she said. “I didn’t realize how highly

ranked I was but it’s really exciting that all my hard work paid off.” As an active member in the Elwood-John H. Glenn school community, Samantha participates in Habitat for Humanity, Independent Science Research Club, National Honor Society and does pole vaulting and hurdle for winter and spring track. She also is a dedicated student and is currently enrolled in four Advanced Placement classes; AP Calculus, AP Physics, AP Statistics and AP Government. Although she is currently undecided on a college, Samantha plans to major in chemical engineering after she graduates.

Prestigious Honor Harborfields High School senior Hannah Bartfield recently performed in the National Association for Music Education All National Honor Band, sitting First Chair in the trumpet section for the group. Bartfield was notified at the end of last school year that she made the NAfME All National Honor Band. Through a competitive process, she was selected as one out of only 18 high school trumpet players in the entire country to be a part of this elite group of musicians. During Veterans Day weekend, Bartfield travelled to Grapevine, Texas to take part in rehearsals and a culminating concert with the band. Based on her audition video, she was chosen as one out of four musicians for the First Trumpet part. Her seating audition landed her First Chair in that section. Music Department Coordinator Dan Bilawsky attended the performance and was very impressed. “She did herself and her community proud,” he said. “The entire music department is incredibly happy for Hannah. We join in celebrating her accomplishments.”

Bayley began rising through the Chief’s Office and was elected Chief of the Department in 1980 and 1981. Bayley is active and has held leadership positions in many fire service organizations. Among them are the Suffolk County and Town of Huntington Fire Chiefs Councils, Fireman’s Association of the State of NY, Suffolk County and Town of Huntington Safety Officers Associations, Suffolk County Volunteer Firemen’s Association, Southern NY Firefighters Association, and the Town of Huntington Exempt

Firefighters Association. As a young man, Bayley began working for Huntington Coach Corp. driving coach buses. He later went to work for Emil Nash on New York Avenue in Huntington doing automotive repairs. Bayley was later employed by the Town of Huntington Highway Department and was promoted to Foreman and then General Foreman. He was in charge of three different highway yards and their trucks and equipment. He retired from the town after 26 years of service.
