Lighten your load and help young people in need by cleaning out your closets and bringing your gently-used or new coats, sweaters, sweatshirts and blankets to the office of Suffolk Legislator Lou D’Amaro as part of the donation drive for “Every Child’s Dream,” a local not-for-profit organization that helps those less fortunate. “Seasons come and go and children grow quickly, and we all have items in our closets that are still in wonderful condition yet no longer fit,” D’Amaro said. “Rather than throw these items out, we can donate them. Just think about how last year’s favorite sweater or jacket can keep someone warm all winter long this year.” Children of all ages, from infant through young adult, are in need so all sizes of warm winter clothing are welcome. Next month, “Every Child’s Dream” will host its 15th annual Holiday Celebration for approximately 400 homeless and needy individuals in Suffolk County to add to the spirit of the season. Donations can be dropped off at Legislator D’Amaro’s district office, located at 130 West Jericho Turnpike, Huntington Station, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday between now and December 11th. For those who prefer to offer a monetary donation, checks made out to “Every Child’s Dream” will be accepted as well. “The cold weather is coming and the need will be great, so I hope that everyone will take the time to look inside their closets to find items they can donate,” D’Amaro said. “It is a simple way to warm your heart and warm others at the same time.” For more information, contact Legislator D’Amaro’s office at 631.854.4433. During the Nov. 16 Elwood Union Free School District Board of Education meeting, there were multiple recognitions of outstanding staff members and students. Kevin Harrington, Elwood-John H. Glenn High School’s girls volleyball coach, was recognized for recently being inducted into the NYVCA Volleyball Hall of Fame. Treats for Troops Community service club and student council members at Elwood Middle School recently ran a Treats for Troops drive - gathering leftover Halloween candy to send to local and overseas service members. On November 14th, students spent time after school sorting the candy into categories and

preparing them to be sent out to the troops. Students also wrote letters to include in each box, thanking the troops for their service. “Thank you for all you sacrifice to keep our country safe,” one eighthgrader wrote, “we are so fortunate to have such brave people fighting for our country.” A few boxes were sent

out to troops earlier in the month, and altogether, close to 300 pounds of candy was collected for the cause. “These students are always so willing to give back to the community,” said Student Council advisor Martine Pirolo. “It’s so inspiring.”

The Christmas Closet I used to love decorating for the holidays. Each year, I couldn’t wait for the lights to go up in my neighborhood, the house to smell like pine needles and all the cherished knick knacks to find their way to the shelves. That was, until I began accumulating more decorations than my own little apartment could handle. To say my closets resemble something out of an episode of Hoarders would be overly dramatic; however, the fact that my coat closet no longer accommodates clothing of any kind, but rather, a fairly hefty collection of boxes piled nearly to the ceiling, tends to give me pause. In order to sort through what belongs to Christmas, specifically, it is now necessary to remove nearly all of these containers, briefly peek inside, and then continue to dig. To be fair, these are not all my decorations. Not quite. Once my grandfather passed away and we began the painstaking process

of cleaning out the house my grandparents had called home for nearly 60 years, I acquired several boxes of cherished holiday possessions to add to my already-growing collection. Don’t get me wrong: to the outside observer, it probably doesn’t look like much. And, for the remainder of the year, the vast majority of lights and garlands and greens are out of sight. Only I know what lurks behind those closet doors. (And now, you, dear readers.) It is only once the last of the Thanksgiving leftovers has been packed away in the fridge and the sounds of Christmas carols have invaded the airwaves that my mind turns to the menagerie that lies within. Usually, it is a two-week ordeal; one for the random figurines and wreaths, accents and novelties - and the other, for the tree, my skinny, sixfoot tall “apartment tree” that comes neatly folded in a box, possibly the most compact of

all my original purchases. Last year, I kept the decorations fairly low-key, favoring instead only the most special of my grandparents’ holiday mementos, a few white lights and my very own Charlie Brown tree. This year… well, let’s just say the process may need to be expanded to three weeks. The way I see it, as long as all is completed by a week or so before Christmas Eve, there is plenty of time left to enjoy. I’ve never been part of the crowd that feels the need to put up the nativity as the last of the trick-or-treaters is leaving; nor do I rush to pack it all away before the final present has been unwrapped on Christmas morning. To each his or her own. However you choose to celebrate, whatever the extent of your decorations… as long as you enjoy them, even if no one else has occasion to see them, that is all that matters. Happy decorating.

Spirit of Giving In the spirit of Thanksgiving, students at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District recently collected food for families in need. Harborfields Alliance Community Outreach conducted a schoolwide Thanksgiving drive, and most people donated at least one item. In addition to this drive,

Ms. Marie Fenter’s thirdgrade class collected more items to put together individual baskets for those in need. “Monday was World Kindness Day, and when I asked my students what they wanted to do, they said they wanted to give food to the poor,” said Ms. Marie Fenter. “It was very heartwarming.” Once the baskets were

put together, students wrote down reasons they were thankful on orange strips of paper, and created 3-D pumpkins out of them. “I’m thankful that my grandma is coming for Thanksgiving,” said thirdgrader Isla. “I don’t get to see her a lot, but she’s coming for the holiday, and I’m excited!”

World Language Members of the ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School World Language Honor Society recently visited the students at James H. Boyd Intermediate School. Juniors and seniors in this society shared their knowledge of the languages they’re studying. The event was organized by Ms. Nicole Correia and Ms. Nicole Gendjoian, the advisors of the World Language Honor Society.

Students participated for the first time last spring and enjoyed it so much that it was organized for a second time this fall. Lessons in Italian, Spanish and American Sign Language were taught that afternoon. All three languages grabbed the young students’ attention, and many of them engaged by asking questions. Specific topics were taught throughout

the day, including sports, school, weather and even a bit of grammar. High school students enjoyed the experience as well and liked being teachers for the afternoon. “It was great to teach the kids something new that they were interested in,” said senior Sam Katz. “It’s important to give insight into the other cultures that are present in today’s society.”

Elwood Middle School in the Elwood Union Free School District recently held its annual Red Ribbon/ Dignity for All Students week. From Monday to Friday, different events were scattered throughout the day, helping students explore what it means to love yourself, to treat others with kindness and to always think positively. At the end of the week, the Huntington Drug and Alcohol Project visited the middle school to remind students of the slogan, “Your Future is Key, So Stay Drug Free.” A photo booth with careeroriented props was set up, and students were able to take pictures looking like a policeman, a doctor and other professions. Students also created drug-awareness posters and hung them throughout the school. The middle school’s Knights for Good club, along with the Huntington Youth Bureau, PTA and teaching staff, all contributed to the success of this week. The district looks forward to many more successful annual iterations of this event.

The Traveling Wilderness Museum came to visit first-graders at Norwood Avenue Elementary School in the Northport-East Northport School District on November 15th. The morning featured sage Teepee Ted, who travels from Montauk to Manhattan, teaching students about the original Native Americans that lived as settlers on Long Island. The morning’s events were tied into the theme

of Thanksgiving that was taught in classrooms throughout the week. Students, with the help of Ted and some volunteer parents, built a teepee from the ground up, made wood medallion necklaces with Native American symbols, played pick-up sticks with animal bones and more. The first-graders also learned that the native people had to make everything themselves that they couldn’t just go to

the store to pick something up. Students also learned how the Native Americans tried to be good “recyclers” by using every part of the animals they hunted for food. “I try to teach kids that these people were the best recyclers,” said Teepee Ted. “That’s something they can relate to. We recycle bottles and cans, but the natives just did it a little differently.”

Lifelong Learners On November 7th, the Northport-East Northport School District continued its dedication to professional development and held a Superintendent’s Conference Day. Teachers and staff members attended a vast array of sessions and workshops, on and offsite. Workshops covered topics such as how to integrate technology to maximize student learning and

sensitivity and mindfulness in the classroom. Groups also gathered in collegial circles. Different departments, such as music and art, met offsite and attended departmentfocused workshops. In order to continue integrating technology into everyday classroom lessons, the day offered Chromebook and Google Classroom

centered workshops and collaboration periods to help teachers and staff members to better their grasp of the technology. “We pride ourselves on providing the needed professional development so that our staff stays at the forefront of the latest educational practices and technology,” said Superintendent of Schools Rob Banzer.

High School Heroes

On November 9th, Northport High School’s Business Club for Students participated in High School Heroes Day at Bellerose Elementary School. A group of 44 business students, representing grades nine through 12, were trained by a Junior Achievement representative in order to

be “teachers for a day” at Bellerose. This day was organized in an effort to provide a basic overview of the business world to younger students. The lessons taught focused on how communities work, what economics are, and the circulation of money. In addition to teaching

younger students about the economy, the goal of the program was to also provide positive role models for younger children and to foster effective school-to-school connections. Several students had siblings in the classes they taught, while others taught in their old classrooms.

in state for the NYS Federation, and ninth in state for NYSPHSAA schools. In the preliminaries, Stepanek broke her own county record with a 1:49.35, and then bettered it by almost two seconds in finals. In addition, she broke a 13-year-old county record in the 100-yard freestyle that was set by Julia Smit, the 2008 U.S. Olympian. Both of her final swims were automatic AllAmerican times, and she was awarded the Most Outstanding Competitor award for the competition.
