The Secret In Making Great Decisions before dawn and head east towards Montauk Point (very close to where Gurney’s Inn is located, and where you can find a lot of free parking spots). I time it so that I arrive there right around sunrise. Since I already have my running gear under my clothes, it only takes a few moments to get ready. Leaving the car, I walk towards the water’s edge to where the hard sand is. At that point, I begin a slow run along the shore for about a mile. I pick out a small sand dune and rest for a while. While resting, I always pay special attention to the way the waves break offshore and then roll up onto the shore. I find it very soothing to watch. The key point is that while I am resting, I think about the following three factors (which come from the core of strategic planning): 1) Where am I today? In my career, my marriage, my home life, my finances, my relationship with my kids, my outlook on life, etc. 2) Where do I want to be one year from today? What do I hope to accomplish in the next twelve months?

3) What do I need to get there? What are the tools I need to reach my yearly objectives, and how will I go about utilizing them? Special note: While these three questions appear to be relatively simple, rest assured they are not! To answer each of them, be completely honest with yourself. Make sure that all those are achievable, even though some require a bit of a “stretch” on your part. I assure that by using this method it will be a definite help in reaching your yearly goals. Best of all, you don’t have to travel to Montauk Point to do this. Just find a quiet corner anywhere, where you will not be disturbed for at least forty-five to sixty minutes and you can do this. It will take a bit of patience for the first time, but rest assured, it will prove time well spent. Best of luck on your journey and remember, Rome wasn’t built in one day. Use liberal quantities of patience and you will be just fine. Have a great day. Peace.

How to Make Use of a Jacket “Don’t seek, don’t search, don’t ask, don’t knock, don’t demand... relax. If you relax, it comes. If you relax, it is there. If you relax, you start vibrating with it.” - Osho Much of our suffering comes from our unwillingness to relinquish control. Everything from large sweeping intersections in our lives to the smallest details that plague us daily when they don’t go our way; we often operate under the faulty belief that we can use force, manipulation, or anger to bend the universe to our will. Coming up to New York after living in Florida, my nine year old son grew accustomed to living his life in t-shirts and shorts, unencumbered by the heavy winter gear that New Yorkers wear. As the weather has grown colder, he has been resistant to wearing his jacket, hat and gloves; instead insisting on layering t-shirts and sweatshirts. For weeks now, our morning routine has included me begging, pleading, warning him about getting sick, threatening to take away various priviliges, and at

times, shouting in exasperation. “JUST PUT YOUR JACKET ON!” In reality, the thought of him getting sick, or even what the bus driver or teacher would think of me were my motivating factors for my panic. It was my own discomfort about the situation. What I’ve realized is, ultimately, I don’t have control. My job as his parent is to empower him with love, values, ideas, compassion, and the information he needs to make the right decisions for himself. All I can do is sit back and allow him to experience the world. This morning, as we were waiting together for the school bus to arrive, I observed that my son’s hat and gloves were inside his backpack; his winter jacket slung over his arm. None of these items were actually on his body. I said, “Uh... you know, carrying a hat and gloves, and holding your winter jacket won’t keep you warm. They only work if you wear them.” He replied, “I know that.” I nodded my head in mutual understanding and said, “Okay, good. I just want to be sure that

you’re aware of how the whole process works.” He stared at me and let out a sheepish giggle. Slowly, he reached inside his backpack for his hat and placed the hat on his head for warmth. Then, as if to say, “I’m not doing this because you want me to. It’s my decision,” he slung his arms through his jacket. As a singular stance of independence, he skipped the gloves. I was okay with that. The allowing and the space of freedom it created caused my son to put on his hat and jacket. It was more effective than the begging, the pleading, the vague threats of catching a cold. In life, the more we try to control others or our circumstances and surroundings, the more our desired outcome eludes us. Be in a state of allowing. Just as you would allow the water from a babbling brook to seamlessly run through your fingers rather than trying to clench and trap the water in your hands, allow things to simply be as they are, and watch as your suffering diminishes.

The Book Fairies, located in Freeport, NY, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that accepts donations of new and gently used books and connects them with organizations throughout all five boroughs and Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading. Some of those organizations are hospitals, schools, veteran organizations and soup kitchens. Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. With only 2 staff members, The Book Fairies heavily relies on the work of selfless volunteers.

Additionally, book donations and financial donations are always welcome and The Book Fairies is in need of corporate sponsors. The Book Fairies does more than just impact their local community; they are also dedicated to supporting literacy programs in underdeveloped nations around the world. Some of the books they receive that are in fair to average condition are packaged for partnering organizations to be shipped overseas! Since the program’s inception, they have helped build libraries in Africa, India, China, South America and the Caribbean Islands!

If you would like to get involved with The Book Fairies, you can! They are in need of sorting volunteers to come to their Freeport location on one of their sorting days (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and help sort through all their current book donations. If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. If you’re interested in volunteering as a sorter, there is no need to reserve your space. Simply show up at their Freeport location (70 North Main St. - Back Entrance) on one of their sorting days between 10AM and 3PM!

Recently, Bellerose Avenue Elementary School in the NorthportEast Northport School District partnered with former Bellerose student and Eagle Scout Will Aguirre to honor the late of Mrs. Fran Jasinkonis, a retired teacher aide who passed away in 2017. This ceremony and collaboration was an outcome of last year’s Shared Decision-Making Team’s, who heard of and researched Mrs. Jasinkonis’ contributions to the school during her 27 years there. Her outward efforts to model respect, acceptance and kindness to all students touched many

lives. Eagle Scout Will Aguirre wanted to find a way to give back to his elementary school, and for his Eagle Scout Project, decided to refurbish the library garden area in Mrs. Jasinkonis’ honor. The project included the fixing up the brick garden wall and recapping with bluestone slabs, as well as fixing up the slate patio. He also created a rock garden, built and installed a hand-crafted bench and installed a plaque with Fran Jasinkonis’ name. The library garden was dedicated in honor of Mrs. Jasinkonis. On Nov. 9, several family

members, friends and retired Bellerose personnel, including retired principal Ira Goodman, gathered to acknowledge Mrs. Jasinkonis’ dedication to the school, and to thank Will for the hard work he put into the project. Fifth grade students were in attendance as well and opened and closed the ceremony with a song. “Kindness never goes unnoticed,” said Principal Lori Beekman, “and we’re so fortunate that our community is filled with people who never stop looking for ways to give back to others.”

Kindergarten and fifthgraders came together at Fifth Avenue Elementary School in the NorthportEast Northport School District to spend time talking about gratitude and creating hand-traced thankfulness turkeys on Nov. 15. Fifth-graders from Mrs. Christine Shaw’s class partnered up with kindergartners from Mrs. Kathy Admunsen’s class to trace their hands to create a turkey and

assisted them in penning what they were thankful for. These two classes come together on a regular basis and do different activities together. Each student has an assigned buddy that they spend time and build relationship with. Previous to this activity, students learned about how people around the world live differently than us in America, and it left them feeling appreciative for the things that can be taken for granted, such as indoor

plumbing, grocery stores and doctor’s offices in our towns. In honor of Veterans Day, Northport High School students had the privilege of hearing from local veterans on November 13th. During specific periods throughout the day, groups of social studies classes heard from a panel of brave men who have served our country. This event was organized by social studies teacher and American veteran Darryl St. George, who also coadvises the high school’s Project VETS, along with Mr. Jim DeRosa. Before each panel commenced, a moment of silence was held for those who have lost their lives serving our nation. During the panel, students heard each veteran answer the question, “As veterans, what do you think is the most important message you can convey to our nation’s youth?” Many stressed not taking America’s freedom for granted. Additionally, students had the opportunity to ask the veterans specific questions. “We organize this event not only to enable our students to encounter these incredibly courageous people first hand and not just read about them in textbooks,” said Mr. St. George, “but also to let our country’s veterans know we are so thankful for their sacrifices, and they will never be forgotten.” Additionally, students from various family and consumer science classes made special dishes to treat the veterans to lunch between panels. The spread included homemade quiches, soups, and more. Students from Project VETS were

also present, and both groups of students had the opportunity to talk with the veterans over the meal. “I have family members who are veterans, and I’ve seen firsthand how they don’t get the respect they deserve,” said Project VETS President Nicole Forte. “Our mission is not only to support our nation’s veterans, but to let them know how much we appreciate them.”

Making “Makers” at Washington Drive School Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District held a special ribbon cutting ceremony for their new Makerspace, which has long been in the works, on Nov. 8. The school was honored by the presence of Mr. Roger Tilles, who represents Long Island on the New York State Board of Regents at the ribbon cutting ceremony, along with Superintendent Dr. Francesco Ianni and other district administrators. Students lined the halls outside the space, peering in, eager to explore what the room had to offer. Once a few students assisted Dr. Ianni in cutting the room’s ribbon, students poured in. The students treated those in attendance by singing the school’s theme song to christen the room. First grade teacher Melinda O’Donoghue explained to the students what a makerspace was, and how fortunate they were to have such a space that most primary schools don’t have. Students were then released to explore all of the items within the space, where they tinkered with the Lego wall, programming robots, and more. Mr. Tilles spent some time interacting with the children, encouraging them to be creative, and reading them a few inspiring poems by various authors, including Shel Silverstien. Creating this unique space that enables students to explore creativity and innovation aligns with the district’s goal to maximize student opportunities in the areas
