The school’s popular “Dodge Cancer” event drew in more than 300 studentparticipants, raising funds to benefit those directly affect by the disease. Black Friday is nearly upon us once again. Can it really be one whole year since we all ventured into the void that is the morning after Thanksgiving to join the throngs searching for that special, magical bargain? Notice I said the morning after Thanksgiving, not the night of, not the day of, and certainly not the weeks leading up to… Black Friday festivities should be reserved for the day itself; that’s what makes it unique. Of course, we now have Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday and a host of other “specialty” days to
observe as well, each with its own nuances – but all come down to the same basic concept: saving money. In all honesty, there has been some argument as to whether these days actually bring the best bargains, with some contending that the last minute rush in the days leading up to Christmas Eve is really the best bet for cost cutting. And then there are those who, as we sit here today, have already shopped, wrapped and shipped all their presents before the turkey hits the table. It would be nice if we could all take a step back and view holiday shopping as the joyous task it was meant to be, rather
than as a chore, a checklist of tasks to be crossed off one by one. Gift giving is meant to be an expression of appreciation for those we love, a token of thoughtfulness… not a source of stress and aggravation. The second it becomes that is the moment you need to pause and reevaluate your approach. So as you enjoy your Thanksgiving dinners gathered around the table with your families and friends, savor the moment. And as you embark on your shopping journey, be it Friday, Saturday, Monday, Christmas Eve or any time in between, take that same sentiment with you. Happy Shopping!

Glenn High School volunteered to serve as referees in the friendly competition. For the fifth consecutive year, the school collaboratively raised more than $5,000 that will be given to families in the community

that have loved ones battling cancer. “This event brings the students and community together for a special cause,” Event Coordinator and Elwood Middle School Teacher Darren Szokoli said. “As students work within their community, they learn they can be responsible for making great things happen.”
For the past 15 years, the Northport/East Northport Public library has invited middle school students to come and hear a distinguished author speak about the writing process. This year, Mr. Rozmus and Mrs. Leahy’s eighthgrade students at East
Northport Middle School met Author Steven Sheinkin to discuss his writing process and research techniques. All of the students read at least one of Sheinkin’s books, including King George, What Was His Problem? and Lincoln’s
Grave Robbers, and completed four out of five reflection questions. After the visit, Mrs. Leahy spoke to students about writer’s craft. Students then analyzed the difference between narrative nonfiction and “textbook style” information text.

Bradstock Raises Funds On November 10th, Friends of Bradstock, Kevin Spellman, Board Brendan McCurdy and presented a check in the President, Camp Pa-QuaBob Draffin, Directors, amount of $12,000 to Tuck, at the camp’s board meeting. With this check, Bradstock has raised a total of over $42,000 for Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck in the past four years. WiFi Launch The Harborfields Central School District is proud to announce that Wi-Fi was recently installed at each school building throughout the district. “ This is a milestone for our district,” said Dr. Thomas McDonagh, president of the Board of Education. “The installation of Wi-Fi became a reality through the community’s unwavering support of the adopted 2014-2015 budget, as well as through the support of the entire Board of Education for this initiative.” With the addition of Wi-Fi, there are many instructional and learning implications, all to benefit student learning. “A wireless school is fundamentally a different
learning environment than a wired school,” said Dr. Francesco Ianni, the district’s assistant superintendent for administration and human resources. In many schools, student access to the Internet – and the endless learning resources that can be found online – is in a computer lab. Wi-Fi enables new educational practices to emerge because access to the Internet becomes ubiquitous. “When access to unlimited resources becomes available anytime, anywhere instantaneously, educators begin to use those resources differently,” said Ianni. Devices used throughout the district such as
Sunshine Toy Drive Chrome Books and laptops are now connected through Wi-Fi, which enables instantaneous communication between students and their peers, and between students and teachers. In addition to the WiFi installation in each building, ‘Outdoor Wi-Fi’ will also soon be installed at Harborfields High School. This will allow live streaming of outdoor sporting events, as well as the school’s annual commencement ceremony. “The installation of WiFi throughout our district is just one example of how our administration and Board continually seek opportunities to enhance the offerings for students,” said Dr. McDonagh.
The Sunshine Toy Drive has started collecting donations of toys for the holiday season. Victoria Plumitallo, a 16 year-old high school student from Dix Hills, had a desire to help as many needy children as possible receive holiday gifts since she was a fourth grader. Assisted by her parents, Dix Hills Fire Commissioner Mike
Plumitallo and his wife Hope, the Toy Drive was created eight years ago and has helped thousands of less fortunate local children during the holidays. Derived from her nickname “Sunshine,” Victoria’s idea grew into the Sunshine Toy Drive hosted by the Dix Hills Fire Department. New children’s toys and clothing

Sean L. Fitzgerald has received an Army ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) scholarship to attend The Citadel, Charleston, S.C. Scholarships are awarded on a merit basis, reflecting academic achievement, extracurricular activities, physical fitness, specific performance or accomplishment, leadership abilities, and personal interviews. Scholarship recipients are
enrolled as members of the Army ROTC battalion at their colleges. The scholarship entitlements include tuition and fees, as well as an annual book allowance, and a monthly stipend for up to 10 months of each school year the scholarship is in effect. Upon graduation from college and completion of the ROTC program requirements, the student receives a bachelor’s
degree and a commission as a second lieutenant in the Army. All scholarship students incur a military service obligation of eight years, which may be fulfilled by either serving on active duty or in the Reserve Components of the Army. Fitzgerald is the son of Susan Fitzgerald of Northport. He is a 2013 graduate of Saint Anthony’s High School, South Huntington.
On Monday, November 10th, nine new maple trees were planted along the fence-line between Ocean Avenue Elementary School’s fields and Dogwood Avenue in Northport. Getting the trees planted was the project of a group of parents and students at the school, but a week earlier it had looked like they’d fall short of the $1,000 they needed to raise by November 7th. With only about $500 pledged they placed flyers in mailboxes hoping to somehow raise the additional $500 in the next three days. That’s when Lemon Aid, the not-for-profit organization founded by 15 year-old Sarah Connor, stepped in to provide the remaining funds. Sarah, who started the organization when she was 8 years-old, is no stranger to planting trees. She’s used funds raised through Lemon Aid to plant 18 flowering cherry trees along Northport’s
Main Street, replace another cherry tree that died at Ocean Avenue Elementary School, help tornado ravaged Joplin Mo and Moore OK replant trees, and assist Oceanside and Long Beach in their replanting after Superstorm Sandy. Now she’s focusing once again on her hometown with a program to help plant street trees anywhere they’re needed in the Village of Northport. “Trees are very important. They take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, they anchor the soil, and their leaves provide mulch and fertilizer,” she explained. “They’re nature’s way of keeping everything balanced. And studies have shown that people are happier and healthier in communities with lots of greenery. Whenever a tree comes down, we should definitely replace it.” Sarah began her venture with a simple lemonade stand in her front yard
during the Cow Harbor and Memorial Day parades in Northport, and it quickly became a well-known local fixture, raising more than $15,000 for various charities. “I was so happy to help plant the trees at my old elementary school,” she said. “Someday I’ll be able to bring my children back and show them nine tall trees that I helped make possible.” In addition to lemonade, Sarah sells handmade lemon soaps at her stand and is talking to local shopkeepers about carrying them in their stores as an additional fundraiser. The Harry Chapin Food Bank and Humanitarian Center is the organization’s third community-based program on Long Island and will provide emergency
food, household supplies, personal care products and community support services to residents experiencing hunger food insecurity, or both. Cold Turkey Bingo Inspired by the Thanksgiving holiday, students at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School were presented with the ‘Cold Turkey’ Bingo Challenge on November 12th, encouraging them to turn off their electronic devices and engage in reading and physical activities instead.
Prior to presenting the challenge, Harborfields Public Library Head of Children Services Patricia Moisan read students a classic Thanksgiving storybook, ’Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving, by Dav Pilkey. Following the story, Ms. Moisan explained the guidelines and requirements for
completing the ‘Cold Turkey’ Bingo Challenge. A strong advocate of the challenge, Ms. Mosian said, “It’s really about getting back to basics. We want to encourage children to get back to reading and finding time to come to the library to learn about different books.”

Winners Announced On November 15th, twenty-two teams — including two pre-rookie teams — took part in the 3rd Annual Half Hollow Hills Invitational at Half Hollow Hills High School West. The event was presented by SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) and the Half Hollow Hills School District. High school students used the same robots they built for the 2014 Long Island Regional FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition. The robots battled on a 27-by-54foot playing field with a
truss suspended just over five feet above the floor, attempting to earn points by trying to shoot as many balls as possible into goals during a two-and-a-halfminute match. The winning alliance comprised of Malverne High School FIRST Team #884 “Mechanical Mules”; Patchogue-Medford High School FIRST Team #329 “Raiders”; and Huntington High School FIRST Team #5016 “Huntington Robotics.” The finalists were Hicksville High School FIRST Team #1468 “J-Birds”; Center Moriches High School FIRST Team #4458 “Infernobotix”; and Bay Shore High
School FIRST Team #271 “Mechanical Marauders.” The purpose of this postseason event was to show visiting schools, teachers, and administrators how students are garnering an interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and why robotics programs are vital to their schools’ curriculum. Kicking Cancer Motivated by a special cause this year, Harborfields girls soccer teams raised $10,298.93 for the Kicks for Cancer program, collecting donations to benefit a family of Harborfields High School students who recently lost their mother to cancer. Adopted by the Suffolk County Girls Soccer Coaches Association, “Kicks for Cancer” raises funds for families with loved ones directly impacted by the disease. This year, the
Harborfields girls soccer teams collected donations in the name of Audrey Davis who sadly lost her battle with cancer this past summer. The four Davis children attend Harborfields High School and the youngest, Julia Davis, is a member of the girls soccer team. The teams coordinated a number of highly successful fundraisers, which culminated in a specially designated “Kicks for Cancer” league game. During the game, the Harborfields varsity girls
team claimed a 6-0 victory against Rocky Point High School and earned a spot in the Suffolk County playoffs. Motivated by a shared goal the soccer players held close to their hearts, their fundraising efforts well surpassed donations raised in previous years. “Their energy and drive were contagious,” Harborfields High School Assistant Principal Jami Goldstein said. “Their spirit was felt through the school as they organized and championed each fundraising event.”

Celebrating The Viola Four student-violists at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District recently participated in Long Island Viola Day at Herricks High School. Accompanied by their orchestra teacher, Cathy Ferraro, fifth-grade students Rubenia Aguilar, Emily Ambrose, Henry Barteski and Gabriella Bianco performed in a concert with 75 viola
students and their teachers from schools all across Long Island. Students in grades 4 through 12 played in small group rehearsals led by experienced viola teachers and had the opportunity to work with guest clinician Dr. Shelly Tramposh, professor at the Crane School of Music in Potsdam. Last held in 2004, students were fortunate to take advantage of this year’s Viola Day to share
their appreciation for this unique instrument with other music enthusiasts and professionals. This event aims to provide participants with the tools to improve their musicality and technique, as well as perform wonderful viola ensemble literature. TJL student musician Emily Ambrose commented after the concert, “I wish they had this every year!”

Akers. The donor is the widow of Walter Whitman Swertfager, Whitman’s great-great-grandnephew. While she was unable to attend the ceremony, her daughter Sharon Swertfager Wilson and two granddaughters, Nicole and Stephanie Wilson, did attend, as did several Whitman descendants who live on Long Island.
