Osteoarthritis Explained…
Our Treatment is Non-Surgical!
About Arthritis Knee Pain Centers
Osteoarthritis is also known as degenerative joint disease and is the most common type of arthritis. When osteoarthritis occurs, the surface layer of cartilage around the knee breaks down and wears away. The bones that connect at the knee joint then rub together with no cushion resulting in pain, swelling, and loss of motion in the joint. While the disease can progress quickly, in most people it develops gradually over a period of years.
Our treatment has been thoroughly tested by the FDA over many clinical trials and is designed specifically for those with knee pain. Its effectiveness is proven and is improved through the use of state-of-the-art live motion fluoroscopy which allows doctors to see exactly where the problem is occurring.
Our doctors at Arthritis Knee Pain Centers have decades of experience and are invested in utilizing the most cutting-edge technologies and methodologies to serve their patients. Through their experience they can customize a treatment plan that’s right for you. The Arthritis Knee Pain Centers offers hope and healing for your knee pain.
Osteoarthritis is Not Your Fault… It’s not your fault that you have osteoarthritis. There are many reasons why this disease afflicts people. Heredity can be a major cause of osteoarthritis. If a parent or grandparent had it, it may be passed down to you. Other reasons for developing osteoarthritis include: • Being overweight (medical factors can impact this, not just over-eating) • Aging (wear and tear) • Joint injury (falls, sport injuries) • Joints aren’t properly aligned or are imbalanced • Genetic defects in the joint cartilage • Undue stress on joints from work, sports, etc.

Here’s How Our Treatment Works… Our advanced technology allows our doctors to see the exact location in the knee where the greatest damage is. This is done through special imaging called flouroscopy. Once the affected area is located, an FDA-approved viscosupplementation gel is injected at the exact point where it will do the most good. From there, the healing process begins. The gel bonds with the existing natural fluid in the knee to create a lubricating and cushioning layer in the knee between the bones. This reduces pain, swelling and inflammation in the joint. Most patients feel improvement quickly and can resume activities they hadn’t previously been able to do because of the pain.

Holiday hosts toil for hours to create lavish meals everyone will enjoy. It’s not uncommon for Thanksgiving tables to be covered with more food than guests can conceivably (and comfortably) consume. Leftovers are the norm, but without a plan for what to do with leftovers, food can spoil or end up in the trash. Here are some delicious and waste-conscious ways to put Thanksgiving or other holiday meal leftovers to use. Wrap It Up Promptly Even though you may want to sit around and chat with guests when the meal is finished, leaving food out at room temperature for too long can create a breeding ground for microbes that may lead to food spoilage and sickness. The NY Friendship Circle partnered with the organization Bake Back America/Joggers for Juniors for a mega tie-dying event that culminated with a donation of more than 200 sweatpants to children living in local homeless shelters. Children and young adults with special needs from The NY Friendship Circle, along with volunteers and parents, gathered at The Chai Center playground in Dix Hills for a colorful and festive afternoon of community service tiedying pants to show their support for teens who are facing hardships. The jogger pants will be donated to three charities, including Bethany House of Nassau County. The NY Friendship Circle
Based in Dix Hills, NY, The NY Friendship Circle is a 501(c) (3) charity started as a way to bring teens and children with special needs together to form meaningful and lasting friendships. Teen volunteers have helped make the NY Friendship Circle not only a safe place for children of all abilities to be themselves, be accepted and be valued for who they are on the inside, but also a place where everyone can learn new things. The teen volunteers offer friendship, true support and mentorship to those who need it when participating in various classes and activities, promoting an atmosphere of true integration. Please visit www.NYFriendshipCircle. com for more information.
Joggers for Juniors Launched by 17-yearold Emma Klein of West Islip, NY, Bake Back America/Joggers for Juniors was created to give children with special needs a platform to give back to individuals and communities especially in times of need. This effort focuses on a warm and supportive environment that empowers these children to feel confident that they too can impact others. The inspiration behind Joggers for Juniors was to connect two very special communities, one with special needs and one faced with life’s hardships to take that jog down the path together. How To Hit The Open Road During A Pandemic
Fall has traditionally been a great time of year to hit the open road. Fall foliage annually provides an idyllic backdrop for fall road trips, but 2020 is a year unlike any other, and veteran road trippers may wonder if it’s wise, or even legal, to take to the open road this fall. The COVID-19 virus has forced local governments to implement various changes aimed at preventing the spread of the potentially deadly virus. While interstate travel during the outbreak is different, it’s not illegal. However, many states put specific policies in place that mandated out-of-state visitors self-quarantine for a certain period time, most often 14 days. Such measures compelled many would-be travelers to remain within the borders of their home states. Traveling need not be a relic of the past because of a pandemic. In fact, travel enthusiasts can hit the open road this fall with their peace of mind intact, especially if they follow a few safety precautions while heading off for parts unknown. · Determine how far JOGGERS FOR JUNIORS - Launched by 17-year-old Emma Klein of West Islip, you really need to go. NY, Bake Back America/Joggers for Juniors was created to give children with special Restrictions have been needs a platform to give back to individuals and communities L-R - Emma Klein, and lifted in many areas, but it’s still most convenient Elizabeth Klein. for drivers to stay somewhat close to home, ideally within their own states. That makes it easy for them to buy food, gas, use a restroom, or visit a park or monument without violating the spirit of quarantine mandates. A trip need not cross borders to be fun. · Plan for fewer pitstops. The fewer stops drivers make on their trips, the lower their risk of being exposed to the COVID-19 virus. In lieu of dining out during your trip, pack your lunch at home and take it with you. In addition, fill up your car before embarking on your trip so you don’t have to visit the filling station while on the road. Bring enough water and snacks so you can stay hydrated and don’t become hungry while out and about. · Get a tuneup before your trip. No one wants to confront car trouble during a road trip, and that’s especially so when traveling during a pandemic. A breakdown during a pandemic may force drivers to visit roadside body shops or arrange for tow trucks, potentially putting them at greater risk of getting COVID-19. Drivers should
take their cars in for a tuneup before taking a road trip to lower that risk. · Avoid densely populated areas if you intend to get out of your vehicle. If you intend to get out of your vehicle during a road trip, avoid visiting areas that tend to draw large crowds. Popular lookout points may provide some beautiful fall views, but such points also draw crowds that may exceed the limits on group gatherings recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state health agencies. It’s possible to travel during a pandemic. But drivers must take extra precautions to reduce their risk of being exposed to potentially deadly viruses like COVID-19.
Auto News (NAPSA)-Motorists driving their vehicles with underinflated tires waste 1.2 billion gallons of fuel in the U.S. each year. Properly inflating tires can save motorists as much as nine cents per gallon. To learn more, visit www. discounttire.com.

The 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation came together in 2012 to help form a day that was focused on the generosity of giving during the holiday season. Thus, Giving Tuesday was born. Technology and social media play a large role in uniting people for Giving Tuesday. Founding partners included Mashable, a technology website, Skype and Cisco, but the success of Giving Tuesday is thanks in large part to the general public, who have both spread the word and made their own contributions to charity. In 2017, Giving

While Black Friday and Cyber Monday are some of the more widely known retail holidays, Giving Tuesday is becoming pretty popular in its own right. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Giving Tuesday helps raise awareness that charity is an important component of the holiday season. Matinecock District (B.S.A.) Hosts Webelos Scouts And Visitors
To help whet the appetites of the Webelos Scouts as they learn about what to expect when entering their local Boy Scout Troop next year, the Matinecock District (Boy Scouts of America), held its 21st annual Webelos Woods event, as 19 Cub Scout Packs and 18 Boy Scout Troops from the Commack, Kings Park, and Hauppauge areas of Smithtown Township and from the entire Town of Huntington attended the day event on October 4th at the Seminary of the
Immaculate Conception in Huntington. Due to the COVID restrictions and guidelines, it was a day trip instead of the usual overnight camping trip. Everyone wore masks and filled out a COVID-19 Prescreen forms prior to the event as precautions and for Tracer information (if needed in the future). If you are interested in joining Boy Scouts, there’s no need to have been a Cub Scout prior to joining! Watch for the 2021 Webelos Woods and join us for the fun and excitement
of scouting weekend in October 2021. For those youths who are interested in joining Boy Scouts but were unable to attend the Webelos Woods event, please contact District Executive Taliesin Powell at 631-924-7000 Ext. 131 or check for a local Cub Scout Pack or Boy Scout Troop via “BeAScout.org” To find out more information: go to www. sccbsa.org/matinecock to find out all the fun activities that is going on in our district.

New York Blood Center And Area Hospitals Launch Initiative To Increase Blood Donations Amid Pandemic Area hospitals and academic medical centers including NYC Health + Hospitals, Northwell Health, NewYork-Presbyterian, Weill Cornell Medicine, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Mount Sinai Health System, Montefiore Health System and Catholic Health Services of Long Island are joining forces with New York Blood Center (NYBC) to increase blood donations. Temporary blood shortages are not uncommon during summer and winter holidays each year, but the COVID-19 pandemic has created a chronic shortage across the country that shows no sign of improving. This reality is particularly dangerous given the looming uncertainty surrounding the pandemic’s trajectory over the course of
this winter. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500 donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Prior to the pandemic, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations, but nearly all high schools, colleges, offices and other community groups have had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19. Blood donors can now make appointments to visit donor centers, but donations are at just 65% of pre-pandemic levels - well below what is needed by hospitals and patients in our area. “The entire foundation of the way people donate blood has changed. The
convenience factor of walking down the hallway while at work, getting out of class or donating after religious services is gone. Instead, we have to rely on people taking the extra step of proactively seeking out a place to donate. So far, that isn’t happening at the level we need,” said Andrea H. Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Recruitment & Marketing for New York Blood Center. “In normal times, announcing a blood emergency would create a short-term increase in blood donations, but this will not solve this particularly difficult shortage longterm. This is an incredibly challenging time for our communities.”

Help Wanted
Preservation Long Island, a regional preservation advocacy nonprofit, is pleased to announce a call for nominations for the 2021 Endangered Historic Places Program (EHPP). Nominations are open to the public and can be submitted digitally through the EHPP 2021 portal on Preservation Long Island’s website. All nominations must be received by Friday, December 18, 2020. Do you know of an endangered historic place in your Long Island community? Preservation Long Island’s Endangered Historic Places Program (EHPP) offers Long Islanders an opportunity to advocate for preservation priorities in their communities while learning how to use tools like landmark designation, tax incentives, and public outreach. Our EHPP listing partners receive technical assistance and advocacy support as
they work to preserve at-risk historic places threatened by a variety of adverse conditions, from outright demolition to the lack of sustainable longterm stewardship plans. EHPP listings are featured on Preservation Long Island’s website and social media. Listed sites may serve as locations for our Preservation in Progress Tour series, which highlights ongoing preservation projects at historic places throughout the region. We also support our listing partners in developing informational materials such as leaflets or brochures outlining the history of a site and its preservation needs. Listings are selected by a panel of Preservation Long Island staff, experts in architecture, historic preservation, and other related fields, as well as members of Preservation Long Island’s Board of
Trustees. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Significance: A nominated site must be historically, culturally, or architecturally significant and may encompass individual buildings, landscapes, structures, or any grouping thereof. However, the nominated site need not be listed on the National/State Registers of Historic Places or designated as a local landmark. Threat: The existence and/ or integrity of the nominated site must be seriously threatened. In addition to planned demolition, threats can include a pattern of neglect or exposure that will inevitably lead to loss; the planned introduction of harmful factors or insensitive redevelopment that will substantially diminish the context or setting; or inappropriate maintenance/alterations resulting in the loss of material integrity.
Impact: EHPP listing will have a positive impact on efforts to protect the nominated site. The nomination demonstrates substantive community interest in preservation of the site. Local listing partners are sufficiently organized and prepared to advocate for preservation goals. Nomination materials should be submitted online via our website at preservationlongisland.org. Nominations submitted after Friday, December 18, 2020, will not be accepted. Please carefully review the eligibility criteria, submission instructions, and nomination checklist. To inquire about the program or nomination process, contact our Preservation Director, Sarah Kautz, at 631-4924664 x105 or skautz@ preservationlongisland.org Preservation Long Island’s Advocacy Programs
