In the weeks leading up to the event, students brought birthday supplies and presents to school to add to the boxes. Students worked in groups to wrap the boxes in festive paper.

The New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA), is proud to announce that Three Hundred Twenty-Nine (329) students from school music programs across Long Island have been selected to perform among the more than nine hundred (900) students in eight (8) NYSSMA All State Ensembles. This constitutes more than onethird of the total number of students selected for All State. Approximately nine hundred (900) students from high schools across New York State will perform in eight ensembles, and professional development related to music education will be offered to approximately 1,200 attendees. Several school ensembles will be featured, and Glenn Nierman, President of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME)

will deliver the keynote address. NYSSMA’s featured artist will be Triton Brass. Members of this exciting Internationally-renown musical quintet has been artists-in-residence at both the Tanglewood Institute and The Boston Conservatory, where each has served as on the faculty. “As NYSSMA celebrates its eightieth All State Conference, we are proud to partner with the city of Rochester for the eighteenth year in a row,” said Dr. David Gaines, NYSSMA President. “Music educators from all over the State will attend for professional development opportunities, seminars, performances, and valuable lesson materials for use in their classes and rehearsals. Holiday Parade & Festival The Sixth Annual Huntington Village Holiday Parade and Street Festival is shaping up to be the best yet, with at least 15 village merchants offering discounts tied to accessing an interactive on-line map, seven bakeries committing to taking part in the firstever gingerbread house contest and entertainment throughout the day. The parade kicks off at 6 p.m. on November 28th at the Big H Shopping Center on New York Avenue, continuing to Main Street, where it heads west to West Neck Road. But the parade, which annually attracts 5,000 to 10,000 people to the Village, is only one of many attractions as the Town marks Small Business Saturday by day and ushers in the holiday season with the parade and street festival that follows in the evening. The interactive map, which people can access through the Town’s website, www. huntingtonny.gov, will list participating businesses and show points of interest, parking and street closures. As of November 18th, 26 businesses had signed up to be part of the map, including 15 offering various discounts, some tied specifically to the day and others good through the entire holiday season. In addition to the map, volunteers from Huntington Young Leaders will spread through the village to help guide residents and visitors.

Look for the young people dressed as elves or wearing striped hats. From 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., the community room at Panera Bread will offer crafts for children. From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., the Huntington Public Library will offer holiday crafts and stories in the Youth Program Room. Horse and buggy rides will be available beginning at the corner of Main and Wall Streets from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. From 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., visitors can view the gingerbread house competition entries in the window of Salon Mayan at 27 Wall Street and vote for their favorite. So far, seven bakeries have agreed to submit entries: Blondie’s Bake Shop, Butter Street Sweets, Copenhagen Bakery, Fanny Cakes, Reinwald’s Bakery, Rhapsody Cakes, and Sweetie Pies on Main. Volunteers will be handing out ballots. Before the parade, Dancin’ Feet, Kidz Hitz and Lesley Garay of the group Autumns Falls will entertain on and in front of the reviewing stand at Main and Wall Streets, with additional music from DJ John Wrobel. The parade will include competitions for the best floats in several categories, with judging based on how well they follow the theme of the parade, “Candy Land.” The friendly competition among fire departments is particularly

fierce, because the winning department gets to choose who gets to play Santa Claus in the 2016 parade. By popular demand, The North Shore Pops, which calls itself Long Island’s favorite concert band, will again perform immediately after the parade, playing in front of the holiday tree, which for a second consecutive year will take up residence in the (temporarily) vacant lot at 10 Wall Street. Last year, the tree was a popular picture and gathering spot throughout the holiday season. After the tree lighting ceremony, the festival will continue on Wall Street. A disk jockey will take over to maintain the festive mood, as children pay a visit to Santa Claus, get their faces painted, play in the bounce houses or enjoy a free cup of hot chocolate, compliments of Christopher’s Restaurant. Meanwhile, parents can visit local merchants’ booths or just relax in front of the tree. Free parking is available at the Huntington train station, with a convenient free shuttle from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Residents are also asked to participate in the Holiday Food Drive the Town of Huntington is conducting. They can drop off nonperishable food in barrels that will be placed along Wall Street. All donations will be given to the Community Food Council.

Suffolk County Community College’s Culinary Arts program students will prepare about 120 dinners for long-term patients and home-bound seniors of the Dominican Sisters of Hampton Bays in what has become an annual and happy undertaking for the culinary program and its students. This marks the seventh

year Suffolk County Community College has happily done the holiday cooking. The dinner preparation will take place on Wednesday, November 25th, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Suffolk County Community College Culinary Arts & Hospitality Center, 20 Main St., Riverhead, NY 11901. About 40 students and

faculty chefs from the college’s culinary program will prepare the meal whose ingredients were provided by the Dominican Sisters a dozen, 20 pound turkeys; 100 pounds of mashed potatoes; 50 pounds of sweet potatoes; 80 pounds of stuffing; 25 pounds of assorted vegetables and 18 each of apple and pumpkin pies. And, of course, gravy – 5 gallons of it!

Founded in 2002, Birthday Wishes is a nonprofit organization that helps bring the magic of a birthday party to thousands of homeless children in shelters or transitional living facilities each year. “I think this creates an awareness for the kids to realize how much they have to be thankful for,” said Horowitz. “It makes the students feel good helping other kids.”

A not-for-profit, publicprivate partnership launched today in Huntington Station, where a Long Island Green Homes Initiative home energy performance contractor demonstrated the process for a home energy assessment, the first step in tapping into of a range of free and discounted services and resources that homeowners can use to reduce costs and make residences more energyefficient. The LI Green Homes Initiative helps homeowners take advantage of incentives from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority

(NYSERDA). The goals are saving energy, protecting the environment by curbing greenhouse gases and boosting the local economy by stimulating job growth. LI Green Homes headquartered at Sustainability Institute at Molloy College is a partnership of three non-profits: Community Development Corporation of LI, LI Green, United Way of Long Island and five Long Island townships: Huntington, Babylon, East Hampton, North Hempstead and Smithtown. The Long Island Green Homes Initiative model has proven to be cost effective. An earlier version of the program in Babylon netted energy savings for the typical participating homeowner of roughly $1,000 a year. LI Green Homes makes the process simple by guiding homeowners through each step. The initiative has launched a new, user-friendly website (longislandgreenhomes. org) and employs specially trained “Energy Navigators” to advise homeowners by phone and assist them in identifying the full scope of rebates, discounts and low-cost financing available. Homeowners can also call

to receive a free Energy Audit at 800.567.2850. Energy Navigators will schedule a Free Home Energy Assessment that provides a comprehensive analysis of a home’s energy efficiency, based on which a detailed plan for home energy savings and money savings upgrades will be supplied. The assessment also includes carbon monoxide safety testing. The initiative is funded for three years by a Cleaner Greener Communities competitive grant award from NYSERDA of $2.3 million and a supplemental grant from the Rauch Foundation located in Garden City. “Long Islanders have an extraordinary opportunity

An Ode to My Human By: Jamie Lynn Ryan “Tis the time of year to be thankful, and I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge my Human, as I’ve been told by many fans that I am far too tough on her, what with my lack of fancy accommodations and inconsistent feeding schedule. I suppose I have been a bit harsh in my criticisms. Us bettas tend to have one-track minds, you know. In truth, I do appreciate the love and attention she shows me – and she has been better of late with notifying me when dinner is going to be delayed. Speaking of, I hear there’s a large meal coming up – a Thanksgiving, I believe it’s called – where humans

gather ‘round to eat a large stuffed bird. What a disturbing concept. I sure hope there’s no fish on the menu! I do hope I get an invite and my very own place setting though. Day after day, I watch my human unload groceries, chop vegetables, prepare dinner… and then it disappears into the dining room, never to be seen again. All that food, and no leftovers for Buddy? Maybe if I sit at the table and stare at their plates, someone will drop a morsel into my bowl. One can only hope. There I go again, with my culinary obsession. Tiny brain, eyes-bigger-thanstomach. Typical fish. But seriously, a sincere thanks to all my loyal followers who constantly write in to my

Veterans Assembly On November 10th, students at Elwood Middle participated in a special Veterans Day assembly where Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern, Chairman of the Veterans and Seniors Committee, served as the keynote speaker and recognized veterans and service members in the community. Legislator Stern spoke to the students about

the heroism of American service members and the sacrifices they have made abroad to protect the liberties we cherish in America. The veterans and service members, some of whom recently graduated from Elwood-John H. Glenn High School, shared personal stories from their time in the military and explained to the students what their service to our country meant to them.

“Throughout history, our veterans have demonstrated great bravery, sacrifice and devotion to duty to protect our freedom and our way of life,” Legislator Stern said. “It is a great privilege for all of us to hear their experiences and know that the service they gave to our great nation will be honored and remembered for generations to come.”

Student Spotlight TRAVELING BACK IN TIME TO THE 1920’S SUBMITTED BY: KRISTIN DITRANO, AGE 11, FAIRFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

On October 27th, Fairfield School, also known as Massapequa Avenue School, turned ninety. The fifth and sixth grade gathered together and learned about our school and how special it truly is. At the end of the ceremony, the historical society unveiled an historical marker. Some things I learned about the early days of our school are: there weren’t houses surrounding our school like today; there were open fields with cows. I also learned the kids didn’t ride on the bus to school; they walked, rode a bike or road in a carriage pulled by a horse, if they were lucky. Fairfield School only had one room that held multiple grades. The last thing I learned was a classroom could have up to 30 children but only have one teacher.

In the 1920’s, Sebastian Hilton invented a contraption that changed the life of many children. This contraption was invented in Chicago, where Sebastian and his mathematical father lived. Mr. Hilton invented the jungle gym! Sebastian’s father wanted to build a play structure that kids could play on and learn about x, y and z coordinates at the same time. This invention is important because the jungle gym is an object enjoyed by many children. I can connect to the invention of the jungle gym because every time I go to the park, I play on the three dimensional figure and it entertains many kids. In the 1920’s, the stock market crashed and many people lost all their life savings. As a result of this, people

started to live in Hoovervilles. People made houses out of boxes and other scrap material they found. Hoovervilles were found all over the country, but some major Hoovervilles were found in St.Louis, Missouri, Seattle and Washington. This event took place in the 1920’s and ended in 1929. This event is important because many people were homeless for many years because of the stock market. I can connect to this because whenever I go to the city, I see homeless people living in cardboard boxes and this reminds me of Hoovervilles. As you can see, the 1920’s was a challenging time because of the crash in the stock market. This major event will be put down in history just like our school was on October 27th.

Two plays that received honorable mention include “Entropy” by Paige Borak, a senior Theatre Arts and Psychology major at Stony Brook and “A Planet is Born” by Hillary Bhaskaran, a freelance writer from southern California. The winning plays will be honored with a reception and showcased in public staged readings on Wednesday, November 18th, 2015 at 5 p.m. at the Simons Center Auditorium at Stony Brook. Advancing Communications Stony Brook University’s Simons Center for Geometry and Physics, C. N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics, and Department of Theatre Arts announce their third annual Science Playwriting Competition. The winning entries, submitted by University faculty, current and former students and a freelance writer from California, were inspired by the lives of real people, common pop culture references and more. The contest, created by Christopher Herzog, associate professor at the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics at Stony Brook, combines science and theatre, while finding new ways of teaching difficult concepts, traditionally based in the classroom. “By bringing science and theatre together, the annual Science Playwriting Competition aims to find new ways of teaching, learning, and thinking,” said Herzog. “Science plays are an excellent tool for explaining difficult concepts and this competition provides an outlet for scientists and playwrights to go beyond the bounds of their normal ways of thinking, spark their imagination and synthesize a new experience for all.” Stony Brook students, staff, faculty and members of the community submitted 10-minute plays combining themes of science and theatricality. Anchored by two runners finishing in the top ten, Suffolk County Community College won the 2015 NJCAA Division III Women’s Cross Country Championship last Saturday. The Sharks clinched their program’s second national title and first since 2007. Freshman Ryleigh Donegan was the first Suffolk County studentathlete to cross the finish line, cracking the top five with a time of 19:26.7. Coming in behind her teammate in sixth place was Sharks sophomore Leana Wiebelt, finishing with a time of 19:35.9. Sophomore Kayla Clements completed

the race in 20:06.3, contributing an 11th place finish to the Suffolk County effort. The Sharks other qualifying finishes came from freshman Menely Genao and sophomore Ashlee Rommeney. Genao’s 20:33.3 performance earned 19th place, while Rommeney took 37th with a time of 21:24.2. Suffolk County Community College Athletic Director Kevin Foley lauded the team and Coach Matt French. “Coach French has done a tremendous job rebuilding the Women’s and Men’s Cross Country teams, “Foley said. “In two short years, through his leadership and dedication,

Mighty Maya’s Story

Dear Community, I am writing this letter to ask for your prayers and any help you can give to beautiful “Mighty” Maya, who was born June 17th, 2015 with a rare neurological disorder called Hemimegalence phaly. This disorder causes catastrophic epileptic seizures that, in time, could severely debilitate Maya’s cognition and even kill her. Anti-seizure medi cation will not work to control her seizures. The only way to help Maya live a productive and fulfilling life is to have her undergo radical surgery, a hemisphe rectomy, that disconnects the “bad” half of her brain. Maya’s parents are asking for donations to be used toward the cost of everything associated with Maya’s journey, from travel, to medical needs, to physical and occup ational therapy, among other expenses. We know that Mighty Maya is stron g enough for the challenges ahead and we thank you for helping her get there by either spreading the word and donating to her cause. At the age of only four months, Maya had her brain surgery on October 28th, to disconnect the “bad” half of her brain , at Boston Children’s Hospital.
