Another Undefeated Season For the second consecutive year, ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School’s girls varsity volleyball team finished the league season undefeated. The team will next compete in the county finals on Nov. 5, where they hope to repeat as champions. “These girls have been
working hard,” coach Nick Tremaroli said. “I have pretty much the same group of girls that were from last year. I graduated two seniors that were stars last year, so the majority of the team is the same. Just like every team, we had our ups and downs, but we were able to push through
them and keep our head in the game together. A lot of these girls live and breathe volleyball, they play all year round on club teams. This is a very dedicated team and it shows through their play, and it shows through their motivation to get better and be the best and keep the legacy going.”

The Problem The number of ladderrelated injuries in the United Sates increased by more than 50 percent in 15 years, says a study in an issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. Albert Statton III Named Greenlawn Post 1244 Legionnaire of The Year Legionnaire, Veteran and Firefighter Al Statton II has been honored by American Legion Greenlawn Post 1244 as “Legionnaire of The Year 2021” Al founded the program “Operation Enduring Care” 11 years ago to provide personal hygiene and comfort items, gently used clothing, packaged new underwear, socks and non-perishable meals for the residents of the veteran’s homeless shelter located on the grounds of the Northport Veterans Medical Center. At the time, he was struggling to survive and recover from several forms of malignant cancers. His trips to drop off items at the shelter,
helped put a positive touch on appointments for follow up surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Five years ago, Greenlawn Post 1244 sponsored “Operation Enduring Care” as a program of the Post and has supported Al’s tireless efforts as the program has grown. Al continues to provide for the residents at the Northport Veterans Residence, now managed by United Veterans Beacon House. In addition, twice a month, Al and his wife Connie provide needed personal care items to inpatients in the Community Living Centers at the VA. These
residents are the elderly, infirmed and terminally ill veterans of all war eras since World War II. The VA does not provide the residents with these items, so if they have no one to provide these items they must be donated. “Operation Enduring Care,” sponsored by American Legion Post 1244, provides needed items to assist veterans that are inpatients, in danger of being homeless or facing life altering health conditions. Three Prominent News Broadcasters Step Up To Help Life’s WORC
Besides being wellknown news broadcasters, Geraldo Rivera, Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity also have a deep respect for, and willingness to help Life’s WORC (www. lifesworc.org), a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and trust services. The organization, which this year is celebrating its 50th anniversary, recently received $50,000 each from these prominent media professionals. According to Victoria Schneps-Yunis, it was Geraldo Rivera, who made the first contribution. It was Geraldo’s riveting investigative report in the early 1970s, which exposed the atrocities of Willowbrook State School, then the largest institution in the nation serving children with developmental disabilities. Victoria’s daughter was a resident there and she had long been fighting for better conditions. Geraldo’s report, which won him a Peabody Award, and Victoria’s fervent advocacy, ultimately led to Willowbrook’s closing. Victoria then founded Life’s WORC and opened its first group home in Little Neck, Queens 50 years ago. Geraldo has been

Talk turned to the organization’s 50th anniversary celebration, during which Victoria, Geraldo and Bill will all be honored. That led to Geraldo announcing his $50,000 donation, which Bill then matched. Sean Hannity, who had just hosted Geraldo and Erica at his East End Long Island home the previous night, made it a triumvirate and together, the “Three Musketeers” as Victoria fondly referred to them, helped create a new legacy fund for Life’s WORC. Victoria noted that the three broadcasters were all brought up on Long Island and they are supporting a cause in their own backyard adding that, “Life’s WORC is an organization that helps more than 1,000 people with developmental disabilities and on the autism spectrum in warm, loving group homes and day programs supporting them and their families.” More About Life’s WORC Life’s WORC was
founded 50 years ago after the closing of Willowbrook State School back in the early 1970s. As a young reporter, Geraldo Rivera exposed the deplorable conditions that existed within the then largest institution in the nation serving children with developmental disabilities. Rivera first learned about these conditions from Life’s WORC founder Victoria Schneps Yunis. Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed at an early age with severe brain damage, was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps Yunis, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than 5,000 residents. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps Yunis started Life’s WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. Today, Life’s WORC provides beautiful homes located across the region, from Nassau and Suffolk to Queens and Manhattan, in addition to community services, financial and trust services, and the programs and services of its Family Center for Autism.

State lawmakers gathered at the Long Island Welcome Center on the Long Island Expressway to commemorate the success of their hard work to address safety and efficiency concerns on the Long Island Expressway. The team of legislators, including members of both the state Senate and Assembly, were able to successfully direct attention to and ensure state infrastructure resources were dedicated to fixing the LI Expressway. The governor’s office recently announced that the project would replace more than 280 miles of pavement on key stretches of the LI Expressway in Suffolk County, significantly improving the mobility of the hundreds of thousands of motorists travelling between Long Island and New York City every day. In addition to hundreds of miles of new road in Suffolk County, the project will also address issues
with entrance and exit ramps in Queens at Kissena Boulevard, Utopia Parkway and Lewis Boulevard. “I want to thank the Hochul administration and the DOT commissioner for hearing our pleas and for advancing the schedule of paving the LIE from Exits 47-65 to fix the unsafe conditions for motorists and motorcyclists,” Assemblyman Keith P. Brown. “We are happy to see it being done. It’s overdue!” “I am grateful to Gov. Hochul and the New York State Department of Transportation for expediting the muchneeded repaving of the LIE,” Assembly Member Doug Smith said, “I am happy that the concerns of our residents and local officials have been heard and look forward to seeing the project completed.” “The repaving will make travel on the LIE safe and will keep women and men in labor busy for years to come,” said Assembly

The rush often begins the Friday after Thanksgiving on a day called Black Friday. Plaid Friday was born out of a recognition that the frenzied nature of Black Friday may not be for everyone. The event was created in Oakland, Calif., to transform holiday shopping for family and friends into a more connected, pleasurable activity than Black Friday. Plaid Friday promotes the diversity and creativity of local and independent businesses. On Plaid Friday, customers are urged to shop locally and enjoy choosing gifts in a more leisurely fashion. According to event organizers, the name “Plaid Friday” was chosen from the idea of weaving individual threads of small

A National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalist, Kwan also was named a NYSSMA All-State and SCMEA All-County musician. He serves as captain of Glenn’s cross-country, winter track and spring track teams, and is the alto soloist for the jazz band and a vocal percussionist for the Acapelawood acapella group. He plans to study chemistry in college. “I am honored to have this recognition and I am really thankful for all the teachers, my parents and my family and friends who were able to help me get here,” Kwan said. A National Merit Scholarship Program
Commended Student, Hausch is a member of the school’s National Art Honor Society and Science Research Club and won first place overall in the Feinstein Institute of Northwell Health’s Medical Marvels competition. She is interested in learning
about life sciences and plans to study biophysics or biomedical engineering in college. “I really do feel grateful, especially for my science teachers, because I wouldn’t have the passion I do for pursuing the sciences without
teachers who actually care about their students and encourage their interests,” Hausch said. “I also am very thankful for my parents because they encourage me to work on my academics.”
