The Supervisor noted that he has asked Huntington’s state legislative delegation to sponsor legislation that would exempt from the cap programming and expenditures put before the general public for a referendum vote and approved by majority. “For example, our Open Space Bond Act, which has funded many environmentally sensitive property acquisitions, n e i g h b o r h o o d enhancements, park improvements, and green infrastructure initiatives, was put to the voters for approval, on two separate instances. Huntington residents overwhelmingly voted to increase the tax levy each time, so that these essential purchases and infrastructure improvements could be made. A referendum vote to tax for specific services should not count towards the annual tax levy cap,” the Supervisor wrote. In other action, the Town Board: - authorized transferring Town-owned property at New York Avenue and Northridge Street in Huntington Station to Renaissance Downtowns, the Town’s Huntington Station master developer, for construction of a mixed-use building that will include 16 apartments and 6,500 square feet of retail space. increasing the tax levy only by that amount required to fund Federal and State mandated expenses, which are wholly outside the control of the Town Board,” Supervisor Petrone said in his message for the budget’s final version. Supervisor Petrone noted that the increased spending covers costs over which the Town has no control, including materials, equipment, utilities, fuel and – most notably – the statemanaged health insurance program. The state informed the Town that health insurance costs will rise 11 percent next year, or $2.6 million – a single item that is two and a half times greater than the growth allowed by the cap. Supervisor Petrone said the tax cap hampers efforts to pursue some potentially popular initiatives, including renewing the Open Space Bond Act (which expires in June 2018), approving an East Northport Business Improvement District and building a parking structure in Huntington Village. Doing so, he noted, would entail a “substantial” additional piercing of the cap. “While I concur with the fundamental concept behind the cap and applaud the recognition on the part of our elected officials in Albany that real property taxes are of paramount concern to every resident of this State, I do believe there needs to be modification of the language in the current legislation, so that the unintended consequence of limiting growth and new initiatives is eliminated,” he wrote. “As I have indicated in the past, expanded services are not necessarily examples of government waste, something that as written, Tax Cap Act presumes.”

During the discussion of piercing the cap at the September 27 Town Board meeting, Supervisor Frank P. Petrone noted that even after making those cuts, the Town, to stay under the 0.68 percent cap, would have had to lay off employees, further reducing a workforce that is 25 percent smaller than only a few years ago. He noted that residents would feel the effects of those cuts in the form of reduced services and maintenance and hours at Town facilities and longer waits at Town Hall. “I wish to thank my fellow Board members, who continue to work with me by taking the prudent, fiscally responsible steps that have enabled me to submit this budget; a budget that serves the Town residents well by maintaining the current level of services and

The Huntington Town Board, at its November 10 meeting, approved a $191 million spending plan for 2017 that maintains all Town services at current levels while calling for a modest tax increase above the state tax cap. The $190,011,856 budget freezes all salaries and calls for some positions to be eliminated through attrition. It does hold social, youth and arts programs at 2016 funding levels. There will be no impact to Town services, as general department funding has also been held to a status quo. The tax levy is projected to increase by $3.2 million to $117.7 million, a 2.85 percent raise, which is about $2.2 million above the growth that would have been allowed under the 0.68 percent state tax cap figure. However, at the September 27 meeting, the Town Board voted unanimously to pierce the cap because of the draconian measures that would have been required to adhere to it, including cutting funding for the

Middle school students banded together for Elwood Middle School’s eighth annual Dodge Cancer event on November 9th. Grades six through eight participated in a charity dodgeball tournament to raise money for community members impacted by cancer. The event raised $6,500, which will be delivered to struggling families with the disease. More than 300 students participated in the tournament and created dodgeball teams with their
fellow classmates. The teams dressed the part with matching uniforms. Before the tournament began, the school’s kickline team performed a spirited routine to get the crowd on their feet. Sixth-graders went into the auxiliary gym to start the competiton, while seventh and eighthgraders competed in the main gymnasium. Many faculty members, parents and Elwood-John H. Glenn High School students volunteered their time to make the event a success. Family members

Tour Choir Performs The Northport High School Tour Choir honored Veteran’s Day on November 10th by sharing their music with veterans at the Northport VA Medical Center. Under the direction of music teachers Ellen McCarthy and Nicholas Hart, the choir performed
an all patriotic program for veterans that were being cared for in the nursing home section of the VA. Selections included the National Anthem, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, God Bless the U.S.A., God Bless America and the Armed Forces Salute. A few veterans in

Town Historian. “The cleanup at the Old Burying Ground is a fall favorite event,” commented Councilwoman Berland. “This cemetery is one of many sites in Huntington that contribute to the Town’s rich history and our volunteers always enjoy learning its history as we beautify the grounds.”
Students and faculty members at Northport High School honored veterans from major wars throughout history on November 10th for the school’s third annual Veterans Day event. Hosted by social studies teacher and veteran himself, Darryl St. George, and the school organization Project Vets, the day consisted of veterans receiving a homemade breakfast prepared by students, followed by panel
presentations and a special lunch. St. George facilitated the presentations in the school’s Little Theater, where a number of veterans spoke to students about why they decided to enlist, their basic training experience, the hardships, life after the military and the benefits of joining. Students were also asked to reflect on the question, “How can I best serve my country?” St. George explained that serving
does not always mean joining the military and encouraged students to participate in some type of service work. After the presentations, the veterans answered questions from students. “We use this opportunity to educate the students and create interaction between the students and the veterans,” said St. George. “We try to use it not just as an educational opportunity, but also as a way to say thank you.”

Spreading Kindness Oldfield Middle School students participated in World Kindness Day on November 10th by honoring beloved teacher Pamela Long, who passed away in 2014. World Kindness Day is celebrated every November to encourage individuals to perform acts of kindness and show support for one another. The building was decorated by students and staff in celebration of the day. This was the first group of students at
Oldfield Middle School to never know Long. Students created origami cranes and butterflies and hung them in the library in her memory. They also handed them out to their peers and teachers throughout the day to show kindness. The school also created a wall titled The “Long” Wall of Honor, which was filled with quotes from teachers who wrote why Long was the epitome of kindness. Librarian Judy Boshnack remembers Long for her warmth and the love she
shared with others. “Just like Pam spread kindness and sunshine wherever she went, I feel like these students have caught the bug and now are spreading their own kindness throughout the school with their butterflies and cranes,” she said. “It really is a great tribute to her. If the students hear the stories about her, maybe it will stay forever in their hearts like she is always forever in our hearts.”

In an effort to educate and protect students from the dangers of the digital age, families in the Harborfields Central School District gathered at Oldfield Middle School on November 2nd for the district’s first internet safety program. Hosted by Principal Joanne Giordano and Assistant Principals Joseph Castoro and Tara Falasco, the event featured a presentation from the
guidance department, Dean Jeffrey Shade, school psychologist Dr. Mary Aristilde, Officer Corbett and a parent. The program focused on keeping students safe online and touched upon cyberbullying, cyber arguments, apps, trends and the importance of checking social media. Officer Corbett informed family members of the laws and told them that children could be held accountable
for their actions online. In addition, family members were given talking points that to go over with their children to keep them safe. Giordano stressed that internet safety needs to happen, not only in school, but outside the classroom as well. “We need parents’ help,” said Giordano. “We encourage them to support each other and build those bonds to keep our students safe.”

Of Fuzz & Refurbishing What better way to kick off the Thanksgiving holiday than with a column by yours truly, everyone’s favorite fish. It’s been quite some time since my last contribution, and readers have been writing in to inquire as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing and the like. Well, I’m still swimming; perhaps a little more frayed and frazzled of late, but such is life. I’m happy to report that my Human finally got on board with the whole concept of heating my suite, making for a nice cozy atmosphere to spend the chillier months. You know us tropical fish – anything under 78º and I’m looking for a sweater.
On Wednesday, November 9th, the 78th anniversary of Kristallnacht, Jeannie Parnes Wechsler, a survivor of the Nazi war on Russia, addressed a large crowd at The Chai Center in Dix Hills, including numerous teenagers from CTeen. Wechsler, the youngest of seven children, was four-years-old when her family fled Nazi forces in Poland. She discussed her extraordinary mother’s battle to save the entire family – herself, her six siblings, father and extended relatives, during
Speaking of, I seemed to be growing my own little fur coat of sorts over the last week or so, as my fins began sprouting tiny tufts of white fuzz. Eighteen vendors including FactCite, Scholastic, OverDrive, Soundzabound, Infobase, Follett, edu.buncee, and Delaney, lined the
hallways of the hotel offering solutions, creative inspiration, and innovative learning tools. The teacher librarians shared stories and examples of the “voice of their library” with Keynote speaker Shannon McClintock Miller via Padlet. Padlet is free software to create an online bulletin board to display information. Shannon and the attendees found the SPARK Connections presentation relatable because it wove the information and stories shared on Padlet to enhance the concepts of savvy, progressive, advanced, radical, and knowledgeable.

Family Service League (FSL), a Long Island based non-profit human service organization, is proud to announce that it has been awarded a $30,000 grant from Paddlers for Humanity to support its Community Behavioral Health Collaborative (CBHC). This program advances early recognition and identification of potential emotional disorders in children on Long Island’s South Fork through expanded screening initiatives and follow-up services for parents whose children have possible risk concerns.
The CBHC creates a continuum of services beginning with early identification of children with potential emotional disorders, interventions that rely on parent/ family/school/community involvement through supportive and educational programs. The continuum also includes care coordination and treatment for those whose needs have progressed to more serious levels of emotional disturbance. Other CBHC services include: increased psychiatric and social work services in East Hampton and Southampton to include on-site services
in both high schools and increased clinic capacity, Mental Health First Aid Training to promote early identification through a network of trained community members, and workshops for residents, school faculty, and community professionals that will address children’s mental health issues. “Family Service League is grateful for the support of Paddlers for Humanity”, said Karen Boorshtein, FSL President & CEO, “These services are essential to the well-being of children and families who call Eastern Long Island home.”
