Harborfields High School Artist Liza McPherson Earns Perfect Score On AP Exam

Harborfields High School student Liza McPherson was recently recognized for earning a perfect score on the AP Drawing Exam. Advanced Placement exams are scored on a scale of 1 to 5, and McPherson not only received the top score of 5 on the AP Drawing Exam, but was also one of only 308 students in the world to earn every point possible, receiving the maximum score on each portion of the exam. “Liza is a truly exceptional student in my AP Art Class and I’m so proud of her,” teacher Jeanie Ritter said. “Liza’s artistic journey has been nothing short of extraordinary,

culminating in a perfect score for her AP drawing portfolio and prestigious national recognition from the Scholastic Art Awards, both accomplishments being firsts at Harborfields High School. Liza’s work is a testament to her profound introspection and her ability to forge deep connections between her thoughts and her artistry. Through her sustained investigation question, ‘How can I visually represent the depths and diversity of poetic literature?’ she has delved into the heart of contemporary literature, creative writing and visual art, weaving them seamlessly into her creations. Liza’s

commitment to her craft and her relentless work ethic have been the driving forces behind her success. Her willingness to explore various paths within the AP art course while maintaining the core of her sustained investigation question demonstrates her versatility and dedication. I’m immensely proud to have had the privilege of being her teacher and witnessing the blossoming of such a talented young artist. The Matinecock District (ScoutsBSA) welcomes the community to join us on Friday Nov. 24 (the day after Thanksgiving with a raindate of December 2) in our Interfaith Walk. This local 5 mile walk takes us through the town of East Northport as we connect our community to different religious sects in our town. Our Walkers will start at St. Anthony of Padua at 9AM (registration starts at 8:15 a..m) and will stop at 5 different places of faith, ending at St. Anthony for a Social Gathering to celebrate our unity. Learn about our neighbors and other religions in the area to better understand each other. Experience religious freedom that our fore-fathers fought for. A wonderful reminder to “Be Thankful”. All different religions will be represented at this event such as: Judaism, Christianity, Islamic, Buddhism, Sikhism, and Hinduism. Each presenter will explain about their religious beliefs and how they relate to “Duty to God” and the specific scouting religious emblem of their faith. Snacks and water will be provided at each stop, with food and drinks provided at the Social Gathering at St. Anthony Padua Church (starting point) from 2pm-4pm. Temperatures are dropping and many local residents may grow concerned about the ability to afford the high cost of heating their homes. That is why Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) wants to inform local residents that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging has begun processing applications for the 2023-2024 Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP). “Our most vulnerable neighbors should never have to choose between heating their homes and putting food on the table,” Legislator Donnelly said. “Luckily, HEAP will again provide much needed assistance to Suffolk County seniors struggling to cover their expenses.” Depending on the primary heating source, qualifying homeowners can receive a basic HEAP benefit of between $400 and $976 for oil, propane, kerosene, natural gas or electricity. Renters can receive a benefit of $45 or $50. Each year, thousands of Suffolk County households receive assistance through HEAP. Assistance is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis while available. Households that received a benefit in last year’s program should have already received their applications in the mail. Individuals who have not previously received the benefit and wish to submit a new application to the Office for the Aging must meet one of the following conditions: • Age 60 or older, or • Under 60 and receiving Social Security Disability, or • Under 60 and receiving

The Elwood School District inducted Tracey Edwards into the Elwood Wall of Fame on Oct. 14, honoring her exemplary career and contributions to the community. The Class of 2023 induction ceremony was held during the district’s homecoming festivities in the Elwood Middle School auditorium. Established in 2018, Elwood’s Wall of Fame serves to recognize individuals who have made impactful contributions to the school community. Edwards, who attended school in Elwood, retired as vice president after serving on the Elwood Board of Education from 1990 to 2002. She has been a public servant with an emphasis on the well-being of the residents of Long Island for countless years, serving as Town of Huntington councilwoman, Town of Huntington Planning Board chairperson, Long Island regional director of the NAACP New York

State Conference, Habitat of Humanity of Suffolk County executive director, Melville Lions Club president and Verizon Communications president. She is currently a New York State Department of Public Service commissioner and a member of the board of directors of the United Way of Long Island and New Hour for Women and Children LI. Edwards continues to be an active participant in the Elwood school community and provides professional development supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. “Our district theme is ‘All in, Everyone, Every Day for Every Student,’ and Ms. Edwards embodies the essence of what the mantra truly means,” Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Sonia Hood said. “She is an advocate for equity, a mentor and a community builder. Tirelessly, Tracey has championed for equity

Harborfields Earns NATA Safe Sports School Award Harborfields High School was recently named a recipient of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Safe Sports School Award. This recognition honors secondary schools that have met the recommended standards to improve safety in sports. In order to achieve Safe Sports School status, athletic programs such as Harborfields are required to create a positive athletic health care administrative system; coordinate preparticipation physical examinations; promote safe and appropriate practice and competition facilities; plan for selection, fit function and proper maintenance of athletic equipment; provide a permanent, appropriately equipped area to evaluate and treat injured athletes develop injury and illness prevention strategies, including protocols for environmental conditions;

facilitate injury intervention as well as psychosocial consultation and nutritional counseling; create and rehearse a venue-specific Emergency Action Plan;

and ensure that athletes and parents are educated about the potential benefits and risks in sports as well as their responsibilities. “We are honored to be

recognized as a first team Safe Sports School by NATA,” Athletic Director Rob Franco said. “It shows how committed we are to the safety and wellbeing

of our students and staff. I would like to thank our coaches and athletic trainer Chris Schrager for working with me to ensure that our athletics program provides
