Canstruction Champions On October 24th, the winners of Canstruction® Long Island 2013’s annual design competition were announced at its awards reception held at RXR Plaza in Uniondale. On October 26th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) held its 2nd Annual Walk for Alzheimer’s and Fall Festival at the Village Green in Westhampton. A total of 37 teams and over 300 individuals participated in the 5-kilometer (3.1mile) walk, with more than $52,000 raised to benefit ADRC and the programs and services the organization offers. Those who participated
in the walk started at the Village Green and strolled through the streets of Westhampton Beach until they reached the Village Marina. At the end of the walk, volunteers planted pinwheels in the Hope Garden in memory of a loved one who currently suffers or passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease. Following the walk, those who raised $100 or more were treated to a fall-themed lunch buffet.
Children enjoyed pony rides, a petting zoo, face painting, and pictures with Ronald McDonald and delicious treats. Participants also had the opportunity to visit local vendors before and after the walk. What to write… It’s funny, as you go through daily life, there are so many topics that seem worthy of a column; yet, when I actually sit down to write my weekly contribution to this newspaper, I am often at a loss for words. I recently received a letter from a supportive reader saying, in part, that he was writing “to let you know that indeed your words were read and inspired someone… as a humble writer myself, I know that is all we really want after all.” True enough. I must admit, when I first became interested in the field of Journalism, it was mainly due to the fact that I saw it as a wonderful cross-section of all those topics which interested me – English, History, perhaps some Political Science, Photography… really, the possibilities were endless. As elementary writing assignments
turned to full-fledged papers in middle school, followed by “true” journalistic work on my high school newspaper, I was sold on the career choice. This passion for the field only increased throughout college, as I was afforded the opportunity to explore various genres ranging from hard-hitting investigative pieces to in-depth features and profiles to the more subjective movie/music review. And then there was my senior Honors Tutorial and Thesis, a 50-page dissertation on the effects of September 11th on Journalism as a whole, for better or for worse. I had hopes of eventually expanding upon this mini-novel to broaden its scope into a book of sorts; but as time passed and the immediacy of the moment escaped our collective grasp, it seemed that hindsight would change the entire course of my research. And so it remained, 50 pages of reflection, compiled
between the Spring and Fall of 2003, preserved in hardcover. Fast forward to my job here, where I am fortunate to have the privilege to write this column weekly, and the freedom to choose my topics. Over 400 bylines later, there are times when choosing new material is difficult. Sure, there are plenty of sources – just an average day-in-thelife could probably generate a dozen or so possibilities – but not all inspirations should necessarily be captured in writing. Some are better left to the imagination, where they may one day flourish into more improved, developed ideas. In any case, the fact that I inspire anyone is truly appreciated. When you have a passion for your career, the hope is always that this comes through to others. Whether for an “A” in school, or a fan letter from a stranger…
In school, I am taking a class called Sociology. For this class, we have been instructed to do a research project. My topic for this project is how the media influences children into engaging in deviant behavior. For this project, I am employing many methods of gathering my data. Students in today’s world are faced with obstacles each and every day. America’s youth is pressured into conforming to society due to the increased prevalence of negative influences depicted in the media. Bad habits are developed as a result of repeated exposure to the products
that companies try to push to children. Via the media, messages of cigarettes, alcohol and other deviant behavior are justified. Because students see their favorite athletes using a product on the TV screen or a celebrity endorsing a certain brand, they will be pushed into buying that item. If companies tell children that “all the cool kids are doing it,” they are going to lead the kids down the wrong path. There are many methods that a company can use in seducing the consumer. The way we display a product to our youth has a direct impact on the way that they utilize it. For instance, the way the
media highlights alcohol, cigarettes and size zero clothing prods kids into purchasing them. If the media displays a product in a positive light, our youth will view the product in a positive light. Inversely, if a good is depicted negatively, a child will not be as likely to pick up that product. The problem is, the media portrays the worst of items in the best of ways. State Conference Presentation Expectations for APPR, leadership in special education and college preparation for students with moderate disabilities were just some of the topics presented by leaders in the Nassau BOCES Special Education department at the Council for Exceptional Children’s New York Conference. The council is widely considered the gold standard of special education groups at both the state and national level.
“ E d u c a t i o n Improvement for ALL” was the theme for this year’s conference that brought together a wide audience of administrators, educators and parents. partnerships improve the comfort level and preparedness for college for Regents-bound students with moderate disabilities at Nassau BOCES. Participants learned about meaningful and relevant learning activities that have been developed to expose students to the demands of applying to and attending college.

“There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding a pet’s oral health,” said veterinary dental expert Dr. Jan Bellows, incoming president of the American Veterinary Dental College. “Dogs’ mouths are certainly not cleaner than a human’s. Dogs often carry a variety of germs and bacteria in their mouths that stem from buildup of plaque and tartar that can potentially make humans sick through contact with saliva.” The Right Kind of Chewing “Many pet owners also believe that any type of chewing is good for their dogs, but tooth fractures are a common occurrence in pets because teeth can only withstand a certain amount of pressure from hard objects before they break. When pets chew on inflexible items, such as bones, ice cubes or nylon toys, it can put them at risk for breaking a tooth. And while smelly breath in pets is common, pet owners who believe this is normal may be missing the signs of poor oral health or potential dental disease,” Dr. Bellows said. (NAPSI)—Dog owners who think a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s are barking up the wrong tree—and they are not alone. In fact, according to a recent survey, many pet owners have beliefs about their pet’s health that are not accurate or grounded in science. For example, the study—commissioned by the Greenies brand, the maker of dental chews and treats for pets-found that almost half of pet owners believe that dogs’ mouths are cleaner than humans’ and that any type of chewing is good for a dog’s teeth. It also found that about 40 percent thought it was normal for their pets to have stinky breath. About one-third of pet owners believed that a dog’s saliva was capable of curing human wounds.

(NAPSI)—Teens are more optimistic about their financial future but may depend longer on their parents, according to a major new survey. Teens also expressed concern over paying for higher education. Among the Teens and Personal Finance Survey’s key findings, conducted by Junior Achievement USA® and The Allstate Foundation: • More than half of teens think students are borrowing too much to pay for college, yet only 9 percent report they are currently saving money for college. • Nearly 30 percent have not talked with their parents about paying for college. • Nearly one in three teens thinks he or she will be 25 to 27 years old before becoming financially independent. • Teens are unsure about their ability to budget (23 percent), use credit cards (20 percent) or invest money (34 percent). • The majority of teens (76 percent) still report the best time to learn about money management is in kindergarten through high school, but only 29 percent reported programs currently in place. • Of the 33 percent of teens who say they do not use a budget, 42 percent are “not interested” and more than a quarter (26 percent)
think “budgets are for adults.” • More than one-third of teens are either unsure or think their parents do not talk with them enough about money and budgeting. “From our findings, we can infer that teens expect to live with their parents longer. It is interesting to see this shift in teens thinking they will remain financially dependent on their parents,” said Jack E. Kosakowski, president and chief executive officer of Junior Achievement USA. Since 2005, the organization, in partnership with The Allstate Foundation, has helped more than 1.2 million students set personal goals about money and make wise financial choices. The program, JA Economics for Success®, also empowers students to develop, plan and set goals to help protect themselves from unexpected financial pitfalls. Penny Wars Penny Wars 2013 has officially come to a close. The buckets have been emptied, the coins have been counted, the food has been sorted, the military items have been packaged, the Box Tops have been tallied, and the winner has been named. After battling hard all week Team 215/216 (Scavo/ Daniello) was declared the victor. Penny Wars 2013 was one of our most successful yet. After Team 215/216 ran all the change through the TD Bank
Penny Arcade, our official total raised is $4100.85. This is our 3rd time in seven years of Penny Wars that Stimson students have raised more than $4,000 in five short days. Regardless of what the final leader board says, there really are no losers in this year’s Penny Wars. We raised a lot of money, which will benefit Stimson and a charity chosen by the winning team. We will also make a substantial food donation to St. Hugh’s, which will help to feed
Equestrian Champion families in the Huntington area, and we will make Thanksgiving baskets to distribute to South Huntington families. Additionally, we will send a large care package to our service men and women and those Box Tops will bring in some additional revenue for the school. In short, everybody wins! The students and staff had some fun and learned the value of teamwork. The school community will benefit and the greater community will benefit.

Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone recently recognized 21 year-old Joe Penzel, who won a first place at the annual Hampton Classic Horse Show on August 26th. Mr. Penzel, who is autistic, defeated four others to take home the first-place ribbon and silver cup in a competition conducted under the auspices of the Long island Horse Show Series for Riders with Disabilities, PENNY WARS - The winning team of Ms. Scavo and Ms. Daniello with students and which has had a special day staff on their visit to TD Bank. Mr. Penzel is a graduate
of Huntington High School who currently works at a graphic design and printing company. He has been riding since he was five years old, having gotten his start through HorseAbility, a riding program in which students with special needs work with qualified riding instructors to achieve a therapeutic goal. Mr. Penzel also excels in ice hockey, skiing and ice skating. He performed at last year’s Dix Hills Holiday Ice Show, skis with his family and plays for the Stride travel ice hockey
team. In a proclamation presented to Mr. Penzel at the November 7th Town Board meeting, Supervisor Petrone noted how Mr. Penzel and his beloved horse, Dino, performed a perfect walk, trot, canter and figure eight at the competition, earning 21 out of 24 points and besting the second-place finisher by seven points, “with poise and grace and unfazed by the pressure to enhance his previous record” of finishing second the year before.
Bench Dedication Huntington Supervisor Frank Petrone, joined by Council Members Mark Cuthbertson and Susan A. Berland, marked Veterans Day in the Town of Huntington by participating in two ceremonies November on 10th honoring individuals for their distinguished service to our country. At John Walsh Memorial Park, Supervisor Petrone and Council Members Cuthbertson and Berland helped dedicate a bench in honor of U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. (retired) Francis J. Minnock, whose military service spanned 30 years, from being present at the bombing of Pearl Harbor that spurred the United States’ entry into World War II through the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Mr. Minnock received many decorations, medals and commendations, including the World War II Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 13 stars and three Bronze Stars for both his Korean War and Vietnam War service. After retiring from the Navy, he devoted himself to his fellow veterans by driving a Northport VA Hospital Disabled Veterans van. He would leave his home in darkness to begin his rounds of transporting fellow veterans for medical treatment at the VA Center. The Minnock ceremony included the East Northport Middle School chorus singing the National Anthem, a blessing by the Rev. Henry Schenkel, pastor of St.
Paul’s Lutheran Church in East Northport, and the church’s choir singing the navy hymn, Eternal Father. Surrounded by Minnock’s wife, Eleanor (a member of the choir), his children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, daughter Kathie fondly remembered growing up in a household that had, in military fashion, clearly defined rules and responsibilities. For more than
recognize Mr. Minnock for his service. After discussions with the Town, it was decided that a bench in the Veterans Memorial area of Walsh Park, near where he lives, was most appropriate. Earlier, Supervisor Petrone and Council Members Cuthbertson and Berland participated in the annual wreath ceremony at Town Hall. The honored guest was William Ober, commandant of the Huntington detachment of the Marine Corps League, who was named 2013 Marine of the Year at the New York State Marine Corps League Convention. Under Mr. Ober’s leadership, the Huntington Marine Corps League Detachment #792 is one of the most active on Long Island. In addition to having the detachment perform services for funerals, details, and parades, Mr. Ober has promoted other activities such as visiting schools to talk to students about the Marine Corps, spearheading drives for wounded warriors and helping in fund raising and support for two of the local wounded warriors. Age-appropriate gifts for children ages 10-13 can be difficult to find, so residents are also welcome to donate $20 gift cards so children may shop for items that interest them.
Going Cold Turkey
This month, students of Washington Drive Primary School and Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School attended a “Cold Turkey” assembly. The annual program, run by librarians Mary Soergel and Kellie Boshnack of Harborfields Public Library, encourages children to turn off their televisions and video
games and go “cold turkey” for the week. Rather than watching TV, students are asked to read books or take part in activities that do not involve a television for five out of seven days of the week. Upon completion of their five-day commitment, students were asked to return to the library
with the contracts they had received, signed by a parent. In exchange, the students received tickets to a Cold Turkey Celebration on November 25th featuring New York jugglers Grins & Grins. “This is a good idea,” said first-grader Nicholas. “If I’m not watching TV, I can play sports and read books to my baby brother.”

The Town of Huntington Fire Chiefs’ Council recently presented its Firefighter of the Year Award to First Assistant Chief Joe Pansini of the Northport Fire Department. Chief Pansini was recognized for his quick and heroic actions taken on June 7th, 2013, while at the scene of a swift water storm surge on Main Street in Northport Village. Chief Pansini was able to free a husband and wife that were swept away

For example, when Mayling Zhong and Chester Leung visited a PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend event, they knew there were many factors they needed

to consider before adopting a pet. “We knew that our small apartment needed a small dog,” said Leung. The two met several dogs before stopping at Smokey. Just 4 months old, the terrierminiature pinscher mix was a little excitable in his crate when he arrived, as many puppies are. As the day went on, however, Smokey calmed down and seemed smart and eager
to please. His fun-loving personality (and small size) convinced Zhong to adopt him-she knew he would be the right fit for her and Leung. Within minutes, the couple was filling out the adoption paperwork and they were ready to welcome the new pup into their home.
