Past Peak By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Well there it is. I hope you enjoyed autumn. Did you savor the glorious foliage on your drive to work? Did you pick enough apples and pumpkins to last you through your winter hibernation? Did you take in the requisite corn mazes and haunted houses and eat far too much Halloween candy in the process? Like it or not, once those leaves begin to brown and flutter to the ground en masse, autumn is officially past its peak. Forecasters are already beginning
to utter that dreaded four-letter word as the temperatures drop each evening. Heck, even some retailers seem to have hit fast forward, starting their “Black Friday” sales the day after Halloween this year. Um… did we miss something? As far as I’m concerned, “winter” is still a few weeks out. There’s still plenty of turkey and trimmings to be enjoyed, leaf piles to jump into and mum plants to admire. The shopping and decorating and wrapping and cooking can wait a bit. There will be plenty of time for all that over the next
month or so. And then… well, then it’s just plain old winter. Slow down. Savor. Repeat for next season. It’s not that difficult. Perhaps if everyone wasn’t in such a great rush, there would be more time to accomplish things. Mindset is everything. In the meantime, enjoy the cool, crisp autumn air as you rake your leaves and plan the Thanksgiving menu for next week. Be thankful we have four seasons to enjoy, and be thankful for all those whom you are blessed to share them with.

CAPS announced today the launch of its SUSS (Students United for Safe Schools) website http://suss.capsli.org to promote and expand its bullying prevention team building program for middle and high school students. This innovative program was designed and created through the CAPS Bullying Prevention Center and is the first of its kind in the region. SUSS teams are committed to changing school culture and reducing bullying and cyberbullying behaviors in their school communities. Honored For Efforts East Northport Middle School students were recently recognized by the Drug & Alcohol Task Force for volunteering to participate in the Cow Harbor Day Parade. “We are proud of our students who are getting
involved and helping the community gain awareness on the issues surrounding drugs and alcohol,” Principal Pat DeStefano said. Many other students were also involved with recovery, awareness and
prevention week efforts. The students were focused on spreading the word about prevention- with posters, contests and other activities to disperse information.

National Recognition Congratulations to Zachary Castro, Grant Schmidt and Miranda Schmidt for being accepted into the 2014 NAfME (National Association for Music Education) All-National Honors Ensembles, and for their recent performance on October 29th at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee. This is a Northport High School first. “It just feels a little bit surreal,” Castro (AllNational Symphony Orchestra) said. “I thought it was crazy when I was accepted into All-State, but this is a whole new level of insanity. I plan on embracing the insanity of All-Nationals and all the excitement that comes along with it. Having
the opportunity to meet and play with students throughout the United States is amazing! I am so excited and can’t wait to participate in such an amazing event.” The three students were chosen from applicants throughout the United States. There were approximately 600 students selected, and they represent the finest young musicians in the country. “I am beyond excited to have an opportunity like this,” Grant Schmidt (Euphonium, All-National Band) said. “Out of everything, what I am anticipating most is getting a chance to meet other musicians from all over the country. This is, without a doubt, a tremendous opportunity
for me and I am sure it will be an experience I’ll never forget.” Grant’s sister Miranda (All-National Mixed Choir) echoed his sentiments. “I am extremely excited to be a member of the mixed chorus,” she said. “It’s such an honor to be selected among other brilliant musicians across the nation. The music is challenging, but honestly, what is life without a good challenge?” The three Northport High School students chosen for this prestigious honor had a phenomenal experience in Nashville. After working for several days with some of the most renowned conductors in the United States, the students performed at the Grand Ole Opry House.

During the week of October 27th, students at Elwood Middle School participated in a special spirit week dedicated to the district wide anti-bullying prevention program, New York State Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) and Red Ribbon Pledge. The week began with a school-wide assembly for Rachel’s Challenge, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating safe, connected school environments. Through authentic life photos, writings, interviews and videos, students were witness to the “chain reaction” that Rachel
Joy Scott’s kindness had on others. After the assembly, students had an opportunity sign a banner, publically accepting Rachel’s Challenge. Each day of the week offered a new theme for students to pledge their commitment against bullying and drugs. Tuesday’s theme was “Heroes in the Hallway,” Wednesday’s theme centered on “International Day,” Thursday’s theme was “Red Ribbon Courage Day,” and on Friday, students celebrated “Black Out Day” by wearing black and orange in the spirit of Halloween, and also

in the NY Times and various education media, along with electronically distributing a recruitment brochure to hundreds of administrators throughout New York State. “We are not merely waiting for professionals to pick up the newspaper or visit a website, though these are certainly vehicles we are using,” said Mr Dragone. Added Mr. Ruck: “We feel our job is to present the district to the many active professionals working in the region so they can initially understand what the Board seeks, and further use the community input we are currently receiving to apply to our screening process.” A community forum to discuss the survey results is anticipated for December 3rd. Confirmation of this meeting will take place later this month.

MARINE VISIT - Marines from the Huntington Detachment 792 of the Marine Corps League spent an entire day in the library at Cold Spring Harbor Middle School. Students from 7th and 8th grade rotated and had an opportunity to hear first hand accounts of combat as well as daily life in the military. They also had an opportunity to ask questions of the veterans after the presentation had ended. Many students took the opportunity to thank the Marine veterans for their service and to shake their hands as they left. Triumphant Homecoming It was worth the wait for the students of ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School, who were able to march under sunny skies on Saturday, November 8th, after rainy weather forced them to postpone their homecoming parade from the week before. The Elwood community had much to celebrate after the Elwood Knights Varsity football team reigned victorious over the Mercy Monarchs in the rainy homecoming game on Saturday, November 1st. Students, faculty and community members gleamed with blue and white pride as
the triumphant sounds of the high school and middle school marching bands and members of the kickline and cheerleading teams directed the parade of followers. Riding in a yellow convertible, Homecoming King and Queen Quentin Hardy and Morgan Schwartz waved to the crowd of onlookers as they led the studentmade floats in the parade. Designed around a holiday theme, the senior class represented “Halloween” with their float, the junior class designed a “St. Patrick’s Day” display, the sophomore class
represented the “Fourth of July” and the freshmen class depicted “Cinco De Mayo.” While enjoying the vibrant sounds and colors that resonated from the parade, community members cheered at the sight of local residents and civil service groups including, the Greenlawn Fire Department, members of the Civil Air Patrol, Brownie and Cub Scout Troops and the Commack First Responders who brought up the rear of the parade.
