Concept to Creation By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s 5 o’clock on Friday the 13th, deadline day, “odd day” (11/13/15), whatever you want to call it… And here I am contemplating my column, the final piece of the puzzle that is the week’s work here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. By the time you read this, our holiday issue of Seasons™ Magazine will be on the streets, featuring the best of Long Island happenings, some highlights from New York City, and an array of helpful hints to make the shopping and decorating rush go as smoothly as possible. We have even mixed in a few recipes for you to sample at your next holiday gathering. For those unfamiliar with this sister publication,

Seasons Magazine is published five times a year – Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn and (you guessed it) our very special Holiday issue. Nutcracker Coming to Staller The Seiskaya Ballet’s Nutcracker has become a perennial holiday favorite on Long Island. This year’s staging of the Nutcracker is again scheduled for six performances: December 18th through 21st at Stony Brook University’s Staller Center for the Arts. By: Frank Fernandez Long ago, I saw a structure, unusual in its shape and size. Imposing. Hulking, I needed a closer look. Then I noticed it.

Inconspicuous. No one had even noticed a small crack had formed. I knew that it was only a matter of Time until it would burst. Full of pride, I thought I could hold it back. Little did I know, the fear. Many have tried, but none have succeeded, holding back the dam of Time.

The crack slowly spread, and I knew not what to do. But the crack still grew. Larger and larger, Hopeless in all proposals, I turned tail and ran. Hell hath no fury stronger than the man who runs. Runs away from Time. Callously spreading, Stuck in its dateless decay. Everything consumed. There was no more choice. In the end, I surrendered, surrendered to Time. When will all men learn, never to stand in the way of the wrath of Time!

Following the approval of the grant, Abbate purchased materials including plywood, plexiglass, nuts, bolts, magnifying glass and flashlights for the project. Through this assignment, students learned the dynamics of an assembly line production and made adjustments, as the project progressed, to ensure a

Dodging Cancer For the sixth consecutive year, students and faculty members at Elwood Middle School rallied together for the school’s “Dodge Cancer” fundraiser event on November 6th, with all the proceeds going to help families in the community struggling with cancer. Coordinated by teachers Darren Szokoli and Patrick Burke, the popular event drew in more than 300 student-participants in grades six through eight. A $10 donation was collected

from every participant, allowing them and their teammates to take to the courts for several rounds of dodgeball. Along with parents and friends who came to show their support, studentathletes from Elwood-John H. Glenn High School volunteered as referees in the friendly competition. Through their collective efforts, the school raised approximately $6,000 that will be given to four families in the community
