The Town of Huntington paid special tribute to World War II veterans at its annual Veterans Day wreath ceremony November 6th, using the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor to recognize those who responded to the call to defend our country in the war that followed that attack. As part of the ceremony, Supervisor Frank P. Petrone read the names of the 22 World War II veterans, all except one in their 90s, who attended the ceremony and who sat in front of the memorial that carries the names of 6,000 Huntington residents who served in the war. Supervisor Petrone joined Morris Koffer, a World War II veteran and past commander of the Jewish War Veterans Post 488, in placing a wreath at the memorial. “We are very, very thrilled that we have so many World War II veterans with us. As we know, each year, it’s less,” Supervisor Petrone said. “But we stand strong with these people who we read today, and we thank you all. We honor you for your service we honor you for being here with us and we honor those great memories.” “Throughout our history, our nation and our town have been so fortunate and blessed to have wonderful and dedicated veterans who have given so much to so many,” Councilwoman Susan A. This is the first year the parade will have a grand marshal, only one of many features added for this year to make November 26th extra special in Huntington Village, seamlessly integrating Small Business Saturday, the parade and the festival, including an updated interactive map, a new Holiday Parade Facebook page, an expanded gingerbread house competition and a scavenger hunt. The updated interactive map, which people can access online through their smart phones and tablets from the home page of the Town of Huntington website, w w w. h u n t i n g t o n n y. gov, will go live later this week and stay live through the holiday season. It provides information about participating merchants and any offers they might have related to Small Business Saturday or the Holiday Parade, as well as the parade route and parking information. The interactive map also contains a printable sheet of coupons. Last year, 25 merchants signed up to be a part of the map and offer deals for the holiday season. Any merchant wishing to participate this year can download an application on the Town’s website or on the new Huntington Holiday Facebook page. The map site received a total of 2,789 “hits” last year, including 1,239 on the day of the parade and festival. The parade, which draws between 5,000 and 10,000 people to the Village, will kick off at 6 p.m. from the Big H Shopping Center on New York Avenue and will proceed north to Main Street and then west on Main Street to West Neck

Road. The parade will include competitions for the best floats in several categories, with judging based on how well they follow the theme of the parade, “Cartoon Holiday.” The friendly competition among fire departments is particularly fierce, because the winning department gets to choose who gets to play Santa Claus in the 2017 parade. Businesses and organizations are also encouraged to participate. By popular demand, The North Shore Pops, which calls itself Long Island’s favorite concert band, will again perform immediately after the parade, playing in front of the holiday tree, which has become a popular picture and gathering spot throughout the holiday season. The Pops’ performance will be one of many throughout the day, with carolers strolling through the village. There also will be musical performances on and in front of the reviewing stand before the parade. After the tree lighting ceremony, the festival will continue on Wall Street. A DJ will take over to maintain the festive mood, as children pay a visit to Santa Claus, get their faces painted, play in the bounce houses, or enjoy a free cup of hot chocolate, compliments of Christopher’s Restaurant, Almarco and Huntington Panini. There will also be holiday crafts and activities at both the Huntington Public Library and Panera Bread, starting at noon. Free parking will be available at the Huntington train station, with a convenient free shuttle from 5 to 10 p.m.

Students and their loved ones recently gathered for the second Parent Orchestra Night at James H. Boyd Intermediate School. The event, hosted by music teachers Diana GotzenBerg and Karen Gellert, taught the audience basic skills and helped them develop an appreciation for what students have learned in the Elwood String program.

Visitors were instructed on how to hold the instrument and were taught the proper left and right hand bow positions. Students participated by instructing and correcting their family members techniques. By the end of the evening, the group could play three pieces. Three ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School string students, Elizabeth

Choi, Emma Mayette and Mina Ban, assisted throughout the event. “Family members now have a better understanding of what the process is in beginning to play a string instrument and what it’s like as time progresses,” said Ms. Gellert. “This experience can help their student succeed.”

Kindergartners at Washington Drive Primary School celebrated Halloween on October 31st with a costume parade. Families and friends showed up to the event to take photos and watch their loved ones walk with

their class. Students and teachers dressed in an array of creative costumes and waved to onlookers as they passed. Once the classes reached the back entrance of the building, a special Halloween performance

by the students took place. Kindergartners lined up with their classes and, with the help of their teachers, sang a variety of Halloween inspired songs for families and friends to enjoy.

Elwood Celebrates The community gathered together to showchase their Elwood pride during the Elwood Union Free School District’s homecoming parade and football game on October 29th. Each grade level from ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School created a float based on a children’s book for the parade. Organizations also participated in the big event. These included the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, who marched along the streets with the cheerleaders and the marching band. Administrators, teachers and Board members also joined in the fun, including Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert, by walking in the parade and waving to onlookers as they passed. Before the football game

began against Bishop McGann-Mercy High School, residents enjoyed an array of delicious food including pizza and burgers. Attention was called to the field where the senior football players and cheerleaders participated in a special Senior Day ceremony with their parents. Each senior was announced with their parents as they walked across the track. The bleachers were filled with students, teachers and families as the football game went underway. During halftime, the marching band and kickline entertained the crowd with an array of popular songs. The cheerleaders performed a spirited routine and Principal Carisa Burzynski took to the field to announce the winners of

the homecoming floats. The freshmen class took first place with their creative “Very Hungry Caterpillar” float, followed by the sophomore class with their Dr. Seuss inspired “Lorax” float. Burzynski also welcomed the homecoming nominees to the field and announced the Homecoming King and Queen. Brett McNiff was crowned King and Julia Rinaldi was crowned Queen. The game ended in an exciting win for the John Glenn Knights with a final score of 32-3. “It was wonderful to see so many members of the community come out to support the athletic department,” said Dr. Bossert. “The day’s events were a great reflection of Elwood pride!”

Teachers at Elwood Middle School banded together to form a group of minions based on the movie “Despicable Me” and students at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School participated in a Halloween contest.

Jumping Into History Students gathered outside on the field of Northport Middle School and spent about 20 minutes at each of the five stations. They learned a variety of important facts about the significant time period. This included the weapons used at the time, including muskets, pistols, rifles and cannons. They also learned about household items that families used and heard from the “British king” and a “loyalist.” After visiting the stations, the seventhgrade class witnessed a mock battle between the colonists and the British. Boots and Saddles brought a horse to show students what the soldiers used in

warfare and gave the class a show, riding the horse while chopping heads of lettuce with a sword. The students cheered as the reenactment took place. Principal Timothy Hoss found the program to be beneficial because it brought history alive for the students. “It is really meaningful to the students when they are spoken to in the historic present,” he said. “All of the accompanying resources that they have such as the cannons, muskets, rifles and the attire; it’s all really designed to reinforce a rich learning experience. I don’t think the students will ever forget it.”

Seventh-grade students in the Northport-East Northport School District received the unique opportunity to travel back in time to the American Revolutionary War on November 2nd with the help of the reenactment group Boots and Saddles. In an effort to expand the curriculum of the American Revolution, students from both East Northport Middle School and Northport Middle School participated in a Revolutionary War experience where reenactors dressed in time period-themed attire and facilitated stations to teach students about various elements of the war.

Community Forum At its November 17th board of education meeting, the NorthportEast Northport School District Board of Education will continue its discussion on a possible bond referendum to improve buildings and grounds throughout the district. Since May 2015, the district has been researching and discussing facility needs that address basic infrastructure, improved instructional space and renovated athletic facilities. At the November 17th meeting, the district’s architect

will present a revised scope of work for possible improvements. As the board continues its discussion of this topic, community input is welcomed. The meeting on November 17th will be held at the William J. Brosnan School building, located at 158 Laurel Avenue in Northport and will begin at 7 p.m. In addition to this meeting, the district will host two community forums about the proposed improvements on November 30th and December 6th. sessions will also begin at 7 p.m. and will be held at the William J. Brosnan School building. “We anticipate that the board of education will adopt a resolution in January to present a bond referendum to the community for vote in late February,” said Superintendent of Schools Robert Banzer. “Before the Board finalizes the scope of work, we invite all residents to attend the meetings to learn about the project and offer valuable feedback.”

More than 300 longtime Huntington seniors took part October 28th in the Second Annual Senior Reunion Luncheon, at which the Town of Huntington brought together residents who were 75 years of age or older and who had lived in the Town for at least a half century. Organized by Councilwoman Tracey A.

Edwards, the luncheon was aimed at bringing people together without some triggering event such as a family function, so they could meet old acquaintances and share reminiscences. The luncheon carried the theme “Memories of Huntington,” and featured large photos of scenes of Huntington from the 1950s and 1960s.

“I hope all of you look at the pictures,” Councilwoman Edwards told the crowd. “They really tell much of the contributions you have made over the years in the Town of Huntington.” In her remarks, she mentioned one person who had signed up to attend, but who had

Now that the election has come and gone, and we’ve all spent the better part of the last year weighing in with our thoughts and opinions on matters political, societal and purely personal, perhaps now is the time to take a step back and reset. Votes have been cast, ballots counted, and the country has spoken. Whether or not the outcome was to your particular liking, at this point, is, quite frankly, beside the point. The beauty of this country is that we do welcome the discourse, the open discussion of all topics, both mainstream and taboo. That said, yet another benefit to living in this nation is the

fact that democracy has sustained for nearly 250 years, in spite of those very polarizing viewpoints which have consumed our nation over the course of time. In that, there is a measure of victory, even in defeat. The debates which have been waged over the social media channels these last several months have been intense, to say the least. Families have been divided, friendships pushed to their limits, neighborhoods torn apart by protests, rallies and the like. Months of hatred and rage have been built up to the point of no return, in some cases. This is truly a shame. At no point should honest, open discussion be a negative to be avoided at all costs.

Never should disagreement dissolve into petty namecalling and insults, nor should anyone be written off for a mere difference of opinion. Uninformed ignorance? Perhaps. But not an educated analysis of the facts. And with that, we head into the next phase, the great unknown. Better that we should do this with the compassion and understanding that has made this country what it is, with a measure of respect for others, and with a sense of unity toward a common cause – the betterment of life for all those who reside here, as well as future generations to come. That, I believe, is a point we can all agree upon.

A long and healthy life is the ultimate goal for many people. While a host of factors beyond a person’s control, such as genetics, impact how long that person lives and how susceptible to certain medical conditions he or she may be, there are many things men and women can do to improve their chances of living long, healthy lives: Keep working. While many working men and women dream of the day when they can leave the daily grind behind once and for all, they might want to think more about a second career than a long, carefree retirement. A study from British researchers published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry found that each extra year that men and women work was associated with a six-week delay in the onset of dementia.

While men and women may want to retire from their professions, finding second careers or volunteering close to full-time hours may improve their long-term health and quality of life. Stay on your toes. A healthy diet is a key component of a healthy lifestyle, but diet alone is not enough to promote a long and healthy life. According to the Johns Hopkins Medicine Health Library, the risks associated with a physically inactive lifestyle are considerable. Such risks include a greater risk of developing high blood pressure and coronary heart disease and even a greater risk for certain cancers. In addition, physical inactivity can add to feelings of anxiety and depression. Inactivity tends to increase with age, so men and women aiming for

long and healthy lives should make physical activity a vital part of their daily lives. Get your whole grains. Whole grains may be another key ingredient to a long and healthy life. Numerous studies have shown that increasing whole grain consumption can help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. Researchers who conducted a systematic review of studies examining the link between whole grains and type 2 diabetes prevention in 2007 found that eating an extra two servings of whole grains per day decreased a person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 21 percent. That’s an important finding, as additional research has found that people with diabetes have an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, a neurodegenerative

condition that can dramatically reduce quality of life. Visit your physician annually, if not more frequently. While many people, especially those who feel healthy, are hesitant to visit their physicians, doing so may just save your life. Several diseases,

including cancer and heart disease, are more effectively treated when detected early. Annual physicals and discussions with your physician may uncover a disease in its early stages when it is most treatable. Waiting until symptoms appear may not be too late to treat a condition or disease, but taking a proactive approach increases the likelihood of early detection, which increases your chances of living a long and healthy life. Healthy habits improve peoples’ quality of life while also increasing the likelihood that men and women live long, healthy and productive lives.

Be Smart About Antibiotic Use When used correctly, antibiotics and similar drugs known as antimicrobial agents can alleviate infections caused by various bacteria and some types of fungi and parasites. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that these drugs have been used successfully for the last 70 years to treat patients with infectious diseases. But antibiotics cannot treat illnesses stemming from viruses, which include most colds and the flu. As effective as antibiotics can be, antibiotic resistance is a growing problem. The CDC reports that at least two million people become infected with bacteria that have become resistant to antibiotics, and roughly 23,000 people die each year as a result of these types of infections. An April 2014 report

strep throat, urinary tract infections or ear infections. Take a wait-and-see approach. Wait for lab results to come back for strep throat or other cultures to see if you need an antibiotic. Many viralbased illnesses will go away within two weeks’ time. Adhere to dosage guidelines. When prescribed antibiotics for an infection, take them as directed, making sure you complete the dosage cycle. Do not stop simply because you feel better. Stopping early may not be enough to effectively kill the bacteria and may contribute to resistance in the future. Antibiotic abuse and resistance are concerns that can be addressed by becoming informed and making smart medication choices.
