Students at Fifth Avenue Elementary School in the Northport-East Northport School District experienced a unique mix of literature, Halloween and Election Day during the week of October 29th. Children were encouraged by school librarian Mrs. Rosemary Becker to, at home with their families, decorate a pumpkin in the likeness of one of their favorite literary characters. More than 100 students brought in their masterfully decorated designs — iconic characters like the Grinch, Junie B. Jones and the Headless Horseman were painted with incredible accuracy on each pumpkin. Mrs. Becker, along with the help of first grade teacher Mrs. Chrissy Ramos, spread the pumpkins throughout the library to resemble a real pumpkin patch. In the spirit of Election Day, students voted on their favorite pumpkin via a single ballot they were given during library period. Students were proud of the way they brought their favorite characters to life, and discussed with one another the inspiration for their pumpkins. Fourth-grader Tyler said he thought hard about which character he would choose, but finally settled on Captain Underpants, the main character from the popular comic booklike series. “Captain Underpants is all about an adventurous super hero, but is also about these two boys who are really relatable.” he said. “I love reading about all the messes they get into…and it was so fun to turn him into a pumpkin!”

Mind Where Your Music Comes From Over the past few months I have received numerous letters of appreciation from you that have filled my heart with humility and love. I am grateful to hear that my writing is impacting lives. I am also the first to admit that my writing is stream of consciousness and many times I do not know where the information I share comes from. What I do know for sure is that it does not come from me, but through me. Many times I will awaken in the morning bursting with information that I must write down immediately, for fear that it will disappear before I’ve had the chance to rub my eyes and stumble into the kitchen for a morning dose of caffeine. I call it my “morning download.” I have always believed that each of us is bestowed with gifts to share, which are infused into us by a higher source. I am just as much the student as I am the teacher. Last week I was having a conversation with an old friend about the heroes and mentors we all put up on pedestals, and whom we admire for their courage and
their clarity. The late Dr. Maya Angelou was one of those people for me. I joked with my friend and said, “I don’t know what I would have done if I ever witnessed Dr. Angelou losing her temper and throwing a tantrum.” We laughed, and then my friend said, “It would have made her human.” Indeed, at my best I live in the space of what I write, and yet, at my worst I am only human. I have the occasional bad day, but I would like to think my best days far outweigh my worst days. That is all any of us can hope for while in the flesh. We must forgive ourselves and forgive others as we navigate the human condition, and be kind to yourself when you stumble. Celebrate the victories and learn from the mistakes. Acknowledge that you are a co-creator, and remember to give thanks to the universe for the blessings and gifts you have been granted. I love this radio analogy: A radio in a man’s home bellowed out a beautiful piece of music, and as the man swayed hypnotically to the song being
played, he declared aloud, “What a beautiful song!” Suddenly, he heard the radio respond, “Why, thank you!” The man took a surprised beat and replied back, “Pardon me?” The radio then replied back to the man, “You said you like my song, and so I am thanking you.” The man, incredulous and confused, retorted, “What do you mean, your song?” The radio, proud as a peacock, said, “Well, the song is coming from me.” That is when the man turned to the radio and explained, “The song may be coming through you, but it is certainly not coming from you. Don’t you know that the song you play had to be written, composed, vocalized and instrumentally accompanied by others? And let us not forget the sound engineers, producers, and the technology that allows the radio waves to bring this song into my home. You, sir, are merely an instrument that allows this beautiful music to play. But do not think for a moment that you are the song’s sole creator.”

Elwood Middle School’s library was transformed into a miniature Hogwarts during the week of Oct. 22. The entrance, covered in brick-wall paper and dubbed “Platform 9 ¾”, welcomed students during their lunch periods to come in and take part in activities that are found in the ever-popular Harry Potter series. On Monday, students were sorted into one the four different “houses” of Hogwarts — Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slythern. Throughout the week, students had the opportunity to create their own wands, chanting spells such as the famous Hermione Granger’s “Wingardium Leviosa”,

Nature with a Story to Tell Bellerose Avenue Elementary School in the Northport-East Northport School District wrapped up October, a month spent focused on health and wellness, with a day of exploring and interacting with nature on Nov. 1. Volunteers from the Town of Huntington and the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) visited the school to guide classes through trails behind the school grounds, explaining the significance behind
elements of nature they’re accustomed to seeing. This hike was meant to be held in honor of National Public Lands Day, but had been postponed due to previous weather conditions. Prior to the hike, students were taught to create and use science field guides, which they carried with them throughout the day. “Beyond the experience of hiking, we’re trying to teach students who nature changes over time — that every living thing affects
the other things around it,” said DEC representative Ron Galardi, “and how things that die create a better future for the things to come. We’re trying to show them the bigger picture, that everything around them has a story to tell.” Students learned about the significance of certain elements of an ecosystem like shelf fungus on decaying trees, glacial erratics, sassafras trees and more. Serving the Community Seven current and past members of Norwood Avenue Elementary School’s service club, the “O Ambassadors,” volunteered at Project HOPE on October 28th. Project HOPE is a community ministry founded by the youth of St. Hugh’s Parish to help those in need in the surrounding Huntington area. This free meal center offers food to anyone in need, with no questions asked. “We look to motivate
and educate our students on becoming active global citizens,” said club adviser Nicole Barbier. “We want our students to recognize that, in order to make the world a better place, taking action is necessary!” Norwood students Madeline Mandel, Reidyn Vincent, Gabriela Scalia, Northport Middle School students Lily Nye, Ayesha Molano, Mary Breckling, and Anna Mandel, and club supervisors Mrs. Barbier and Mrs. Huebsh freely
gave up their Sunday night to help those in need. In addition to setting tables and cleaning up after the meal, students prepared and served food to the 138 guests in attendance, and spent time chatting with them. “We are so very proud of our students for their community service and level of maturity,” said Principal Michael Genovese.

Chabad of Mid-Suffolk Chabad of Mid Suffolk is joining together in a 48-hour, digital campaign to raise $1,000,000 for security for over 20 of Long Island’s Chabad Centers. Today, over twenty of Long Island’s Chabad institutions have joined forces to implement immediate security upgrades, suggested by law enforcement and counterterrorism professionals, at synagogues, preschools, Hebrew schools and camps.
Many of these upgrades are currently not covered by Homeland Security grants or by local law enforcement personnel. To continue these upgrades, Chabad on Long Island has launched a one million dollar emergency campaign that will be allocated amongst Long Island Chabad institutions, with safety being the number one priority. Chabad of Mid-Suffolk is in need of support to help

Dr. Drew Pinsky Talks Mental Health and Gun Violence in America By Allison Kugel
Dr. Drew Pinsky’s long running call-in show Loveline, with Adam Carolla, aired on MTV for 32 years and pioneered a pop culture adaptation of relationship and safe sex education. The show, featuring an assortment of celebrity guest hosts, served as a lifeline to multiple generations. Dr. Drew’s Teen Mom franchise, also an MTV staple, opened the eyes of television viewers to the trials of teen pregnancy and teen parenthood where previous methods had fallen short. Dr. Drew’s critically acclaimed VH1 docu-series Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew and it spinoffs Sex Rehab with Dr. Drew and Sober House, allowed viewers an intimate look inside the causes of addiction and the arduous road to recovery. With his HLN show, Dr. Drew On Call, which aired from 2011 to 2016, he broadened his television audience, delving into the behavioral components behind the headlines of the day. Dr. Drew’s New York Times bestselling book, The Mirror Effect: How Celebrity Narcissism is Seducing America (Harper Collins), examines the widespread adoption of celebrity narcissism within our culture.
Allison Kugel: Why are school shootings a recent phenomenon over the last 19/20 years? Dr. Drew Pinsky: There’s a multiplicity of factors and no simple answer. Obviously, it’s guns and the type of guns. But in addition, it’s the access that people have; people who have a proclivity towards self-harm or
Allison Kugel: When I am speaking with a physician, like yourself, I wonder how you feel about the intangible factors, like a spiritual component. Dr. Drew Pinsky: I am always challenged by my patients in that regard. They will tell me that their recovery from drug and alcohol addiction, that I turned them towards it, but really it’s the spiritual connection they make that leads them into a full recovery. I’m okay with that. Whatever gets them there! I think there can be a stigma with words like “soul” or “spiritual” because people tend to equate them with religion. But I think [spiritual] is a word people can understand without indoctrinating religion into it. Allison Kugel: Do you think a focus on social media, instead of being more community oriented like in generations past, is leading to a spiritual breakdown? Dr. Drew Pinsky: I think it has accelerated the mob, and mob-like behavior. It gives people a sense of pseudo-intimacy, which is quasipathological. It’s not real. There is a sense of connection, with no real connection. It gratifies only the most basest of emotions – envy, aggression, arousal, and all of these addictive emotions. It doesn’t do anything for empathy, nurturing, service, making a difference. I don’t
see it as the cause, but as an amplifier of these problems. Allison Kugel: What are your thoughts about how media chooses to cover mass shootings and other large scale violent crimes? Dr. Drew Pinsky: There’s contagion, not doubt about it. There’s contagion with things like suicide, all sorts of violent acts, and with pathological behaviors like cutting. All these things have contagion associated with them. I almost feel like it’s a double-edged sword. Yes, there’s contagion, but we also have to take a good hard look at the realities we face. Allison Kugel: Let’s talk about you. When you were in high school and college, what coping skills did you cultivate to deal with things like anxiety, depression, stress and peer pressure? Dr. Drew Pinsky: I had a problem with that. I had panic attacks. I’m still formally diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I was depressed when I was nineteen and there were no services for adolescents at that time. I think that’s what got me interested in helping that population with mental health, in general. I was so mishandled, it was egregious. I thought maybe I was having a seizure when I was having a panic attack; I wasn’t sure what it was. But I understood there was a mental health issue. I went for help and I was told that I needed to get my act together, and I should take long walks in the woods. I would have happily gotten my act together (laughs)! Allison Kugel: We’re seeing a disturbing trend of young males and gun violence. What are we missing when it comes to male adolescent mental health? Dr. Drew Pinsky: Adolescent males, when they have spiritual and psychological problems, become aggressive. And when they don’t have some sort of outlet that they are engaged in, any time there’s social unrest, there’s young males. That’s just the way we’re wired. Males need to be challenged. This sort of co-dependent helicopter parenting over the last twenty years has been about preventing children from experiencing discomfort. I think there is a major deficiency right now. In addition to our spiritual emptiness, we have lost the ability to tolerate ordinary misery. Our children need to experience ordinary misery to learn how to regulate their emotions and overcome. Unless we are challenged, we feel deficient. Because of our
narcissism as parents, we can’t tolerate seeing the child’s discomfort and disappointment, because it mobilizes our own internal misery, which we avoid. We use drugs and alcohol, and extreme sports, and all kinds of ways of avoiding. But when we include our children in making sure they don’t have those feelings as well, there’s a problem. I think that in some way, it is affecting the young male. It’s probably experienced differently from the young female. Allison Kugel: Yes, internalize emotions.

Dr. Drew Pinsky: Women go in, men go out. Allison Kugel: I’m going to throw a scenario at you, and tell me what you think could be a viable solution: A single parent home with limited financial resources, and an undersupervised child who’s beginning to show signs of deteriorating mental health… Dr. Drew Pinsky: I feel unworthy of the question you’re asking me, except to say, make sure there is access to mental health services and that there is no stigma associated with that. But there are other solutions which goes under the heading of Mutual Aid, whether it’s a church or a community. I’m thinking about the book, Bowling Alone (Simon & Schuster). It’s about the decline of club membership in the United States. I think we’re all bowling alone (laughs). And you can’t do it; you can’t do it by yourself! But you also can’t do it with perfunctory supervision. There has to be real, intimate contact. I’m not sure we know how to do that. That’s why where there are resources out there. We need to deploy it and amplify it, and build community around it. Many people are not good at it and don’t even tolerate closeness anymore, mostly because many people have been neglected or abused. When you’ve been hurt as a result of close
relation, guess what you want to avoid in the future. We must overcome that. Allison Kugel: What kind of impact do you feel you’ve had on young people? Dr. Drew Pinsky: I hope I make them think. I’ve broadened the scope of who I want to influence. I’m not just trying to influence young people. I would like to influence all different age groups. Ultimately, particularly with young people, I’ve noticed that the most efficient way to affect their behavior is to give them a relatable source. If you remember, Loveline was about taking phone calls and then we would analyze the cases. With Teen Mom, it’s about looking at the consequences of teen pregnancy. When they approached me about Teen Mom, I knew it would have a positive effect on teen pregnancy. Lo and behold, there is ample research now to show that it did (according to the CDC, teenage births have steadily declined, across all ethnicities, over the last ten years). For young people, I always like looking at the behavior, and then saying, “Here’s how to analyze that, here’s what this means.”

The Book Fairies is an organization located in Freeport, NY. Six years ago, founder Amy Zaslansky heard about a classroom that had no books to offer to its students. Amy decided to start a book drive for used children’s books so she could hopefully be able to donate books to this classroom. By word of mouth and hard work, this drive took off and resulted in a final donation of about 3,500 books! Driven by her desire to make a difference in her community, Amy later created The Book Fairies, a 501(c)3 non-profit. The Book Fairies accepts donations of new and gently used books, and connects them with libraries, schools, veteran organizations, soup kitchens and more organizations throughout all five boroughs and on Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading. Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. With only 2 staff members, The Book Fairies heavily relies on the work of selfless volunteers.
If you would like to get involved with The Book Fairies, you can! They are in need of sorting volunteers to come to their Freeport location on one of their sorting days (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and help sort through all their current book donations. If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. If you’re interested in volunteering as a sorter, there is no need to reserve your space. Simply show up at their Freeport location (70 North Main St. - Back Entrance) on one of their sorting days between 10AM and 3PM! The students in Salvatore Guastella’s class at Westhampton Beach Learning Center recently participated in a fun, twopart activity that involved art and writing. Using leaves, twigs, flowers, berries, glue, and paper, each student manipulated the leaves into different animals to create a picture before writing a story about that animal as if it were alive. Westhampton Beach Learning Center is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides special education services to students with special needs. Mr. Guastella showed students several examples of leaf art to inspire their creativity and, providing assistance when needed, let his students use their artistic interpretation to produce an animal and write a short story about it. Said Mr. Guastella, “This assignment reinforces independent thinking.”

Global Maker Day PTA. Instructional Technology Specialist Krista Albrecht took the stage to help the students understand what the Makerspace was all about. “The Makerspace is place where you can let your imagination run wild,” Mrs. Albrecht said to the sea of students. “You can explore science, engineering, art and so much more all in one room! Does that sound like something you’d like to do?” Along with a resounding yes, the children applauded and cheered emphatically. After a short video showcasing the exciting features of the Makerspace, the Harley Knight appeared to cut the ribbon to the room himself, and the room was officially open for educational exploration.
“Through maker education, the space encourages students’ curiosity, tinkering and iterative learning,” said Mrs. Albrecht. “Students are inspired to continually question how processes happen, inventions can be improved and look to take ownership of their learning.” Within the school’s Makerspace, students will have access to a wide variety of items. From low-tech items like LEGOs and art materials to hightech tools such as Snap Circuits and Code and Go sets, students will have the opportunity to build knowledge through creating, problem solving and hands-on experience in a whole new way.

Top Math Students Island-wide The Northport-East Northport School District was recently informed that four students have been accepted into the Institute of Creative Problem Solving (ICPS) for Gifted and Talented Students. Northport Middle School students Ty D’Amico and James Posillico, and Northport High School students Isabella Vozza and Camden Burkare are four of the 87 students who received this honor. Six hundred students across Long Island were nominated for the program, and those
selected are in the top one percent of skilled math students Island-wide. Those selected will spend 50 hours over 20 Saturday mornings studying an extensive mathematics curriculum. The institute’s mission is to grow problem-solving skills in students using intense mathematics and creative thinking. Additionally, Danielle Levanti, a NHS student who previously completed ICPS, was accepted into program’s Math Research and Technology class. This research program
allows graduates of ICPS to hone skills of writing mathematical papers and how to deliver presentations on their work — skills necessary for future success in the world of mathematics. This tuition-free institute is supported by SUNY College at Old Westbury, the Suffolk and Nassau County Mathematics Teachers Associations, the Nassau Interscholastic Mathematics League and others.
