There are many ways that individuals just like you can get involved with Long Island Cares. You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. They ask that you provide the following specific items in order to provide a Long Island family with a full Thanksgiving meal: - 4 cans of vegetables - 4 cans of fruit - 1 can of pumpkin or pie filling - 1 box/bag of stuffing - 1 box of mashed potato mix - 1 jar/can/packet of gravy - 1 can of cranberry sauce - 1 box of dessert mix (cake/cookie/ muffin) - OPTIONAL: Turkey (please put in a separate bag if you wish to donate this) Donations should be double bagged or in a reusable bag and delivered to their office located at 10 Davids Drive Hauppauge, NY 11788. All donations must be delivered no later than November 20th and must be dropped off between the hours of 8:30AM and 3:30PM Monday - Friday. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations. James H. Boyd Intermediate School was recently awarded a $1,000 Staples gift card from Huntington Subaru as part of the Subaru Loves learning initiative. Additionally, the school was selected to receive 150 STEAM related books to help Boyd’s students foster a love of reading and science. Subaru of America Inc. and other retailers have partnered with Staples and the American Association for the Advancement of Science to show their appreciation to teachers across the country. “We are excited that Boyd has been selected for this program by Huntington Subaru,” Principal Denise Toscano said. “The students are so excited to learn about all the topics.”

Spent grains are a valuable by-product from the beer making process. When making beer, brewers steep super high-quality grains, like barley, in water. They then strain this mixture, keeping the liquid to make beer and discard
the “spent” grains. Turns out, these grains are still incredibly flavorful and the steeping process actually unlocks valuable nutrients. We recycle these grains into our crackers and combine them with 100% whole wheat flour. Our goal is to rise above other cracker companies by providing our customers with an honest, healthy, sustainable, and delicious product. Brewer’s Crackers is owned by Commack, NY natives and brothers Kyle and Matthew Fiasconaro. Kyle founded the company by discovering the discarded spent grains while riding his bike past Greenport Harbor Brewery on the North Fork of Long Island. Using his culinary background from the French Culinary Institute and his time working in some of the nation’s top restaurants such as Blue Hill Farm at Stone Creek, Kyle began playing with recipes until he discovered what has become Brewer’s Crackers. Matthew has an M.B.A. from Dowling College and handles the accounting and marketing side of the business. CELEBRATING OUR WAR HEROES - Honor Flight Long Island will hold a reunion November 23rd at the American Airpower Museum, at Hangar 3, 1230 New Highway, Farmingdale, to celebrate our WWII and Korean War Heroes who took a free flight to Washington, D.C. for a one-day guided tour of their military memorials. They returned that evening at Islip MacArthur Airport to a raucous welcome by Nassau County Firefighter’s Pipes & Drums Band and to thunderous applause from hundreds of family and friends! Honor Flight Long Island (HFLI) is our local, nonprofit chapter of the national Honor Flight Network. HFLI organizes, hosts and pays for the flights to Washington, D.C. each spring and fall. As part of the day’s
events, Veterans and their Guardians fly to BaltimoreWashington International Airport, where a motor coach takes them to D.C. for the guided tour of WWII, Korean War and other military memorials. Each trip includes 50 Veterans who go for free, thanks to donations from across Long Island. They are accompanied by 50 Guardians, next generation, able-bodied volunteers who donate $400 (tax deductible) to offset the day’s costs. If there is no family member to act as a Guardian, HFLI has a roster of volunteers ready to step up for the privilege and donate the suggested fee. Urgent Call For Donors New York’s blood supply has never been lower, and New York Blood Center (NYBC) is urgently calling for donors. There has been a significant decline in regular blood donors, and the region’s supply has reached critically low levels. In order to maintain a safe blood supply, a sevenday inventory of all blood types must be continually replenished. Right now,
reserves are below that minimum. October has always been the month to recover, to take a breath and know our blood supply will rebound after the tough summer months. Unfortunately, this year, that is not the case. Our region’s blood supply has never been lower. This critical blood shortage stems from decline in donor base and increased demand
for blood. We’re hoping that you will share this urgent message to encourage folks to come out to donate. That little extra action can make the difference in the lives of the patients we fight for together. Walt Whitman Birthplace Association (WWBA) is proud to host former United States Congressmanturned-novelist Steve Israel as he presents “Long Island’s Literary Heritage: From Walt Whitman to Steve Israel,” Thursday, November 21, 7:00-8:30PM at 246 Old Walt Whitman Road, Huntington Station. He will discuss Whitman’s views on democracy as expressed in Whitman’s 1871 book “Democratic Vistas,” as

STUDENTS GET CREATIVE WITH WORDS - Second graders at Harley Avenue Primary School had an opportunity to share their narrative writing skills with their classmates during an Authors’ Gala on Oct. 24. Students in Cindy Miller’s and Amy Schombs’ class, also known as “The Schmillers,” spent time writing their own creative stories, including “Dipper Dunk,” “Best Day at Tutor Time Ever” and “The Family Fun Dance.” Each student had an opportunity to walk the red carpet and have their photo taken with their stories. Hundreds walked to support the fight against Alzheimer’s and raise funds for the 50,000 Long Islanders living with the disease at the second annual “Alzheimer’s Walk in the Park” hosted by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) and the Town of Babylon. The walk took place at the AFA-Town of Babylon Respite Care Relief Park at Babylon Town Hall. The walk raised more than $30,000 to support services for Long Island families impacted by Alzheimer’s disease, as well as research toward better treatment and a cure. AFA is currently funding Long Island-based research projects at Stony Brook University, NYU Winthrop Hospital and the Feinstein Institutes for Medical
Research. “We’re extraordinarily grateful to everyone who took part in this event,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., President and CEO of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. “Seeing the enthusiasm and eagerness of all those involved in the walk was inspiring. A very heartfelt ‘thank you’ to our great partners at the Town of Babylon, the volunteers, sponsors and walkers for making a difference!” Students from Lindenhurst, West Babylon, Amityville and Half Hollow Hills School Districts served as volunteers at the walk. Trick-Or-Treaters Welcomed spiderwebs, caution tape, pumpkins and more for the annual Safe Halloween event. The volunteers even constructed a spooky walk, complete with strobe lights and jump scares for the older children. Parents walked the decorated hallways with
their children, who dressed up as witches, ghouls and ghosts. The high school volunteers put on a successful event for the community and kids left happy, toting bags full of candy as they left.

Sewell Inducted Into Lambda Pi Eta Sarah Sewell of Northport, NY, was inducted into the Tau Delta chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, the National Communication Association’s official honor society, during a campus ceremony on Nov. 3. To be eligible for induction into the honor society, students must have completed 60 semester credit-hours,
have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0, complete the equivalent of 12 semester credit-hours in communication studies, have a minimum GPA of 3.25 for all communication studies courses and currently be enrolled as a student in good standing. Lambda Pi Eta became part of the National Communication Associa-
tion in 1988 and was made the association’s official honor society in 1995. Its main purpose is to recognize, foster and reward students who have outstanding scholastic achievement in communication studies. It also aims to promote professional development and create a closer bond between professors and students.
