Honoring Cancer Survivors On Sunday, November 3rd, more than 600 cancer survivors and family members were honored for their strength and courage at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center’s 9th Annual Cancer Survivors’ Day held at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. Attendees were motivated by award winning vocalist, entertainer and cancer survivor, Kevin Sharp. In remission since 1991, he is the only Make-AWish “wish” child to

become the wish request of other kids, bringing his experience with a rare form of cancer full circle. Like many patients diagnosed with cancer, Mr. Sharp is a survivor whose challenging experience has been an inspiration to others. “Cancer Survivors’ Day is a great opportunity to bring together a group of people whose lives have been touched by cancer and to affirm the possibility of a quality life after a diagnosis of cancer,” said Chief of

Hematology/Oncology Kenneth Gold, MD. “Our expanding community of cancer survivors stands as a shining testament to the advances in cancer treatment at Good Sam. Champions Of Children The Child Care Council of Suffolk, Inc. (CCCS) held its Champions of Children luncheon at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, New York on October 18th. The event paid tribute to two Long Island champions: Ken Rosenblum, associate dean for administration and director of the Veterans’ and Service Members’ Rights Clinic at Touro Law Center, and Dr. Shaun L. McKay, president of Suffolk County Community College (SCCC). “We are grateful to all our luncheon attendees. The proceeds from this event help support our

vital programs and services for children, child care providers and the community,” stated Janet Walerstein, CCCS executive director. The honorees spoke about the importance of the Child Care Council of Suffolk’s mission as the guardians of the future – our children. Associate Dean Rosenblum paralleled the Soldier’s Creed – no one is ever left behind – to the work that CCCS does for the children of Suffolk County. Dr. McKay echoed this sentiment by emphasizing the importance of making the investment to ensure

that safe, high-quality child care is available to everyone who needs it. This commitment is evidenced by the availability of child care to employees and students at SCCC College. He also spoke about how high-quality child care and early childhood education offer myriad benefits to educational institutions and to society. The CCCS luncheon attendees also enjoyed an inspiring musical performance by the Commack High School Independent Creative Arts Jazz Ensemble.

On October 24th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) held its 30th Anniversary Gala at JEWEL by Tom Schaudel in Melville. The event raised over $50,000 for ADRC. This year’s honorees were Mark Ordan, chief executive officer of Sunrise Senior Living, and Dignity Home Care. Mr. Ordan was recognized for his work and commitment for caring for those with Alzheimer’s Disease. He joined Sunrise Senior Living in 2008 as the company’s chief administrative and investment officer. He was later named CEO in November 2008. Prior to working at Sunrise Senior Living, he was the CEO of the Mills Corporation, Fresh Fields Markets, and Balducci’s. He also serves as the Director of the Greater Washington Board of Trade, and is a founding member of the Young Presidents’ Organization’s National Capital Area Chapter. Sunrise Senior Living offers many programs for the elderly including assisted living services, independent living, short-term rehabilitation services and care for those with memory loss or Alzheimer’s Disease. Dignity Home Care is an agency that assists senior citizens with care services that they would need at home, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The staff consists of nurses and caregivers that provide the utmost support for the elderly in Nassau, Suffolk. Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island, New York City and Westchester. Those in attendance enjoyed a VIP reception, raffles, a silent auction, Viennese hour and live music by Playground, which is ranked as the No. 1 Four Seasons tribute band. Christmas Toy Drive Mangano Funeral Home, announced today that it is kicking off a toy drive aimed at collecting toys for Long Island’s children. Toys collected in conjunction with City on a Hill Community Church will directly benefit underprivileged children on Long Island this holiday season. As you are aware, some children will feel left out and wonder if they too will experience the joy of Christmas. The faces of all children should light up on Christmas morning. The purpose of this project is to open our hearts to those children in our community

who could not otherwise have a special Christmas celebration. “There is nothing better than watching children open their gifts on Christmas morning,” states Sal F. Mangano, President of Mangano Funeral Home. The Mangano Family has been an integral part of Suffolk County for many years. Outreach programs such as the toy drive allow the Mangano’s a chance to give back by helping brighten the holidays for the less fortunate. The Mangano Family invites everyone to share in the holiday season by

donating new, unwrapped toys from Monday November 11th to Friday December 13th. Anxiously Awaiting A Decision Waiting to hear back from a college is stressful! After applying “early decision” to a toptier college last month, I have begun the nervewracking time period that can only be likened to purgatory. Waiting for that admissions packet to land in my mailbox is truly the most anxiety provoking task that I have ever been subjected to. As tortuous as it was to apply to college, the wait is so much more stressful. Now that I have applied, I am starting to realize that my whole life has been a road leading up to this point. Every decision, every action

I have ever taken, will boil down to one letter. One decision. Whether I get accepted, rejected or even waitlisted, the decision from that university will shape the rest of my life. Some say it is all luck. Even if you are a stellar candidate, you still have a shot at rejection. I like to think that I am what many would call a “wellrounded student.” I am good in school, I have decent test scores, I am on a sport, I am involved in many clubs and I wrote a decent essay. Sadly, if I get rejected, none of these factors will matter. They wouldn’t carry any weight.

Even if you were to try your whole life to be exactly what a college would desire, you could still get turned down. There is no guarantee of admission. The entire college admissions process is one big gamble. If you don’t get in, it was not meant to be. If that particular college does not want you, another college will. The point that I am trying to make is that if you don’t get in, don’t sweat it. The place you spend your four years does not define you. Everything always works out for the best.

Tammy CampagnolaLevinsky of the Bobwhite Patrol and Kurt Rosenhagen of the Owl Patrol were presented with their Wood Badge Beads, neckerchief, woggle and certificate in special ceremonies at the 14th annual Matinecock District’s Webelos Woods, during the campfire program which was held at Cathedral Pines in Middle Island on October 26th. This recognition was the culmination of a combination “learning/ hands-on applications” time management and training course that is available to its adult scouting volunteer leaders

by the Boy Scouts of America. Huntington Station resident Tammy Campagnola-Levinsky serves as Assistant Scoutmaster in Boy Scout Troop 218 (Huntington Station), and as a member of the Executive Board of Suffolk County Council BSA. Huntington resident Kurt Rosenhagen is the Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 218 (Huntington) They participated in two weekend-long outdoors sessions in the Wood Badge Course N7-386-12. The course was conducted in September and October of 2012, and for the first time, the group-participation

instructional section was shared between Schiff Scout Reservation of Nassau’s Theodore Roosevelt Council and Baiting Hollow Scout Camp of the Suffolk County Council. In order to complete the training, the scouting volunteer leaders had to apply what had been learned in a variety of self-directed goals (the practical part of the course) within 18 months, which was accomplished in the summer of 2013. The refuge has just begun project planning and will update the community as contracts are awarded and work moves forward. Long Island refuges include 6,500 acres of important nesting, wintering and migratory stop-over locations for hundreds of species of birds, and hosts 465,000 visitors annually. The refuges also protect threatened and endangered species, fish and other wildlife, and serve as natural extreme weather buffer zones for many of the island’s populated areas. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) has received almost $15 million in Hurricane Sandy recovery appropriations for coastal cleanup and marsh restoration at national wildlife refuges on Long Island. Contracts have been awarded to fund debris and downed tree removal. The Service will use the majority of the funding - $11 million - to restore marshes at three national wildlife refuges, improving the resiliency of the Long Island coast against future storms. An additional $1 million will be invested in projects to repair visitor facilities and Service assets damaged during the super storm. “The marshes at Long Island refuges helped to protect inland areas from the full brunt of Hurricane Sandy,” said refuge manager Michelle Potter. “We will focus our restoration efforts on returning the ecological functions of these marshes by removing invasive plants, allowing native plants to return and restoring

natural tidal flows. The restoration efforts will provide important wildlife habitat and enhance the refuges’ value for coastal protection.” The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has awarded contracts to two New York companies to begin cleanup and tree removal efforts at eight national wildlife refuges on Long Island. Coastal Environment Group, Inc. received a $2.5 million contract for the debris removal. The company is a small, minorityowned business based in Edgewood, NY. It has worked with the federal government on major environmental projects including Hurricane Katrina response and remediation at Superfund sites, and has committed to hiring local workers and supporting local businesses. Coastal Environment Group will begin with aerial and ground damage assessments to develop a project plan. Debris removal should begin in the next few weeks.

SavATree, a tree removal company with offices in Brookville and Southampton, NY, will remove downed trees that are causing public safety hazards at several refuges. Tree removal will begin in the next few days. Both companies will take precautions to minimize environmental damages during the project. Service biologists and independent project inspectors will advise crews and monitor progress. For safety considerations, it may be necessary to close national wildlife refuge areas during periods of heavy work. The public will be notified of any closures in advance. The $11 million marsh restoration project will restore and enhance 432 acres of salt marsh at the Wertheim and Seatuck National Wildlife Refuges and the Lido Beach Wildlife Management Area, in the Long Island towns of Shirley, Islip and Hempstead in Suffolk and Nassau Counties. To be a child once again, that carefree spirit, unconcerned by the world outside of our miniature universe – one of Barbie dolls and tea parties and recess and school friends – shielded from the stress of reality for as long as our parents can protect us. Back to that sense of innocence when we assumed that all those “best” friendships from elementary school would never fade… when we never anticipated a day that those relatives we loved so dearly would ever leave us… when all was right with the world – our world – and

we had no need or desire to look beyond the immediate. Some would say this sense of idealism was misplaced and only served to make the subsequent realities that much harsher; in fact, just a quick look at the children of today would suggest a great loss of that innocence I reminisce over now. And which is better? To grow up jaded, or to develop that cynicism over time? Or, better yet, to not let outside forces beyond our control shape our being to the point of losing our sense of self in the process? If only the right answer was always the simplest. So we grow up, and we

grow. And we realize that each day brings with it new obstacles and reality checks that we may have never anticipated. But this is life, as childhood becomes adulthood, and ultimately, this growth is all part of that process. We can’t have it any other way – and we shouldn’t want to. People come into our lives for a reason, this much is true. Sometimes they stay, other times they go; but either way, we are never meant to be the same. Although, there are definitely days when we could all use a little time on the swings at recess with our friends.

Parade & Street Festival Set The Fourth Annual Holiday Parade and Street Festival in Huntington Village will kick off at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, November 30th, bringing a rousing end to Small Business Saturday with Long Island’s biggest electric light holiday parade and float contest. The parade drew more than 10,000 people last year. The festivities will include a brief ceremony following the parade to light the holiday tree; the trees on the Village Green and at Town Hall will be lit simultaneously. The parade will include competitions for the best floats in three categories – fire department, commercial and not-forprofit – with judging based on how well they follow the theme of the parade, which this year is Holiday Toys. A competition for the bestdecorated business will be held at a later date. Numerous fire departments, scouts, and veterans and civic groups are scheduled to participate in the parade, which will begin at the Big H Shopping Center and proceed north on New York Avenue to Main Street, then

west along Main Street past the reviewing stand at Wall Street to West Neck Road. Wall Street will be closed to traffic from Main Street to Gerard Street until 9 p.m. for the festival, which will include performances from many local groups and promotions from local merchants. In addition, the wildly popular Gamin ride truck will return, as will the horse and buggy rides. Parents are invited to bring their children to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus and some of their favorite characters, including Snoopy, The Grinch, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Sesame Street’s Elmo and Toy Story’s Woody. The Halesite Fire Department will have Buddy the Elf on board the actual sled used in filming the movie “Elf.” Free hot chocolate and cookies will be served. “This is a special parade in a special place – Huntington Village,” Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said. “I invite everyone start the day at the village’s unique shops, visit the many restaurants and then to join us to see the fantastic floats the fire departments and

other groups put together, followed by an evening of family holiday fun.” The parade and festival’s sponsors include the Town, the Huntington Village and Huntington Station Business Improvement Districts, the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce, the Huntington Manor and Huntington Fire Departments and the Huntington Chiefs’ Council. Free parking is available at the Huntington train station, with a convenient free shuttle from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., so people can enjoy Small Business Saturday and the parade and festival. Groups wishing to participate in the parade must submit an application form to the Huntington Manor Fire Department, 1650 New York Ave., Huntington Station, by November 15th. Multicultural Food Festival The Oldfield Middle School cafeteria was a melting pot of cultures during the annual Multicultural Food Festival, with students, their families and staff flooding the school to share their favorite

Submarine Vets Visit Kids In honor of submariners who gave their lives for their country, the United States Submarine Veterans Inc. celebrates Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Week. (The (SS) is a military specialty designator, signifying a sailor is “Qualified In Submarines”). Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Week is celebrated annually during the week that includes Veterans Day, and provides a special period where Submarine Veterans from USSVI Bases (chapters) bring comfort and joy to sick children. The USSVI has over 13,000 members in 164 Bases in the U.S. Year round, U.S. Submarine Veterans visit children

in Children’s Hospitals, Cancer Hospitals, Hospices, Child Psychiatric Facilities, Ronald McDonald Houses, and Camps for Children with medical challenges; in essence, any place where a child is medically challenged. During the visits, they make the children Honorary Submariners. Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) is a USSVI Community Outreach Program whose goal is to bring smiles to children battling challenging medical conditions, anywhere they are being treated. U.S. Submarine Veterans voluntarily do this by giving these children caring attention,

Honorary Submariner caps, certificates, photos of submarines and submarine-related items during visits. The Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Program is part of the United States Submarine Veterans Charitable Foundation (USSVCF). The USSVCF is the charitable arm of USSVI. It was formed to further the purpose of the USSVI by assuming the responsibility of some USSVI activities which are charitable in nature. The USSVI purpose, in part, is to “Perpetuate the memory of our shipmates who gave their lives in the pursuit of their duties while serving their country.”
