The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund held its 3rd Annual Rock & Bowl event last week in an effort to provide three scholarshi ps for students looking to continue their education and promote aware ness among young people not to drink and drive. Over the past three years, the fund has offere d close to $10,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors at the Copia gue Memorial High School. This year, we hope to expand by offering the awards to other districts. Before Brittney was killed by a drunk driver only two days after high school graduation, she was always found helping some body, and even after she’s gone, she still is. The Fund and the scholarships are simple; being a 501c3 not-for-profit, all the money raised goes into a managed fund similar to your retirement 401k. This money earns interest and dividends. This earned money then goes to the awards, leaving the principal amou nt there for many years to come.

The Walsh’s lost a big piece of their family back in June three years ago, and feel it every day. Brittney’s mom, Cheryl said, “At times, it’s hard to smile and laugh, and the scholarship writing component helps us do it again.” What makes these three scholarships unique is they all require the scholar to write a 250-word essay detailing “The Funniest Thing You Ever Did” or “The Funniest Thing You Ever Saw.” Chery l continued to say, “You’d be surprised what these kids come up with.”

Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and Councilwomen Susan A. Berland and Tracey A. Edwards dropped by the first-ever Gateway Nights at the Gateway Plaza on October 30th, taking part in the pumpkin painting and listening to the live music that were part of the event the Town cosponsored with the master developer for Huntington Station, Renaissance Downtowns. More than 250 people attended the event, which ran for three hours on the evening of the 30th at the pedestrian plaza the Town
built at the intersection of New York Avenue and Olive Street. Supervisor Petrone and Councilwomen Berland and Edwards thanked Renaissance Downtowns for organizing the event, and the businesses that participated: the Shops at Suite Pieces, which helped with the pumpkin decorating; Quality Island Landscaping, which helped in acquiring the pumpkins; and Jonny D’s Pizza, the food vendor. Suite Pieces, Quality Island, Deck & Patio Company and Flowerdale all participated in creating a fall-themed
décor piece. The bands Zofolk and Cautionary performed. The goals of the event were introduce residents to the plaza, to make people aware of its features and to encourage their participation in the Huntington Station revitalization efforts the town is undertaking with Renaissance Downtowns, including a proposed mixed use building adjacent to the plaza and artists residences and exhibition space across the street.

For months, I’ve been agonizing over what will be one of the biggest choices of my life. During the fall, high school seniors from all over the world fill out their applications and make their college decisions. For me, it turned out to be an easy choice. I have decided to apply early decision to the University of Miami. Only time will tell if my dream of attending “The U” will become a reality. I am looking forward to potentially spending the next four years alongside my brother, who is currently a sophomore at the University of Miami. Although he transferred there - and I’m applying straight out of high school -
we both realize that Miami will provide opportunities for us that cannot be found anywhere else. The vast challenges and possibilities that can potentially be afforded to me by the University of Miami are enticing. I am excited to undertake the next chapter of my life, and I can only hope that chapter takes places in Coral Gables. When I attended the Manhattan Information Session on October 22nd, I was amazed by the presentation. The speakers detailed the financial aid process, the historic football dynasty and the stellar academic reputation associated with the University of Miami.
After the event, I had a chance to speak to Zachary Goldman, the Assistant Director of Admissions. He was happy to answer all the questions that I had regarding the admissions process and left me feeling comfortable about my choice to apply early decision. I was impressed with how knowledgeable and professional he was. I would recommend attending an information session like this to anyone interested in applying to institutions of higher education, and more specifically, The U. That evening truly sealed the deal; I want to be a Miami Hurricane in the fall of 2016.

Hooray for Halloween United by the holiday spirit, parents, family members and friends gathered at Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District to cheer on kindergartners as they participated in the school’s annual Halloween parade on October 30th. To begin the festivities, students filed out of the school building smiling
and waving as they paraded around the parking lot behind the school building. Kindergarten faculty, dressed in colorful superhero costumes, led students in the parade then helped them prepare for their holiday performance. During the performance, students used hand motions and sang Halloween classics including, “Jack o’ Lantern,” “5 Little
Pumpkins,” and “Pumpkin on the Vine.” After the audience applause, parents had the opportunity congratulate the students on a terrific performance and take class photos. Students then made their way back into their classrooms to partake in special Halloween-themed activities.

Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern Chairman of the Veterans and Seniors Committee, honored Dr. Alfred Huberman as the 16th Legislative District “Senior Citizen of the Year” for his tireless volunteer efforts during SeniorNet’s 16th Annual Meeting, held at the Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington on October 26th. Dr. Huberman has been a volunteer with SeniorNet
at the Family Service League – Don Weidman Learning Center since 2009, leading computer classes for older residents to empower seniors with technology. He also coaches classes with the SeniorNet Mobile Learning Center, teaching computer skills to our veterans at the Northport VA Medical Center. In addition to his work with SeniorNet, Dr. Huberman, a dentist,
has donated orthodontic services to needy children through the Brownsville Boys and Girls Club. Perplexity of Perception I find it truly fascinating how individuals can come away with such varying perspectives on the same topic, time and time again. Whether it be politics, societal issues or even something so lighthearted as this very column, everyone is entitled to their opinion – it’s just interesting how that view is arrived upon. Intelligent argument is one thing; shameless bullying quite another. For some, there doesn’t seem to be a middle ground. I suppose these polarizing issues are what make our world go ‘round. Discussion is the basis of everything, from school classrooms to kitchen tables to podiums
and soapboxes. Especially in this day and age of instant feedback, rarely can an opinion be expressed without an opposing argument cropping up almost immediately. Written forums are the best – or worst, as the case may be – since they afford people the anonymity of expressing often insulting, uneducated retorts. There is something about faceto-face conversation that affords a measure of respect, begrudging though it may be. Personally, I feel this world is full of enough tragedy and conflict without the need to touch on it in this column. South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers has always been a forum for celebrating our local school and community
happenings, of offering parents, teachers and coaches the opportunity to spotlight their children – the next generation of up-and-coming debaters. If you’re searching for controversy, there are plenty of mediums to find it. This need not be one of them. It seems to me that, whatever your lot in life, the best approach is always an objective one. Listen before you speak; think before you write; and respect before you reproach. Children learn what they see, and live what they learn; and there is more than enough hatred to go around without bringing it into the home or classroom, onto the field or stage. We, the adults, are the example. Let’s create one we can be proud to pass on.

Kids Treat Kids Students in Liz Held’s and Beth Noon’s thirdgrade classes at James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District assembled Halloween-themed goodie bags for children at North Shore LIJ’s Cohen
Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park on October 23rd. Each third-grader decorated two bags with festive stickers and drawings. Students filled the bags with holiday items including pencils, erasers,
note pads and a friendly letter the students’ wrote. The teachers and students collectively made more than 100 goodie bags for children at the medical center.
Love of Reading To foster a love of reading, Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District invited parents to share in some quality reading time with their child during the school’s annual Read-In
event on October 23rd. In the allotted half hour, parents and students scattered around the TJL campus and selected a comfortable location to read together. Parents brought along some of their child’s favorite
storybooks and a blanket to sit on while they enjoyed the fall weather outside or chose to read in-doors. While in groups, students and parents took turns reading aloud and showcasing the colorful illustrations in the book.

Lighting the Way In accordance with New York State and historic monuments curriculum, students in Jennifer Thompson’s fourth-grade class at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District participated in an educational field trip to the Fire Island Lighthouse.
Prior to climbing the 182 steps to the top of the lighthouse, students learned about the history of the lighthouse and its role in maritime history. Through interactive demonstrations and a lecture led by the United States Life-Saving Service (USLSS), students experienced the history
and authentic artifacts that represent the early U.S. Coast Guard. While at the historic landmark, students explored the natural environment and learned the importance of preserving the fragile area surrounding the lighthouse.
Kid-Friendly Coding As part of the instructional technology program offered at James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District, students participated in the first of three coding lessons they will receive during the school year. For the first time last year, fourth- and fifthgrade students participated in the Hour of Code global initiative, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics. In an effort
expand the program this year, students in grades 3 through 5 will participate in interactive computer activities that help them learn computer science while nurturing problemsolving skills, logic and creativity. Led by the district technology specialist Krista Albrecht, students used Google Chromebooks to code their first computer program. At the beginner level, students explored different patterns of code through an “Angry
Birds” theme computer game on Code.org. While instructing the Angry Bird to move and complete tasks, students were exposed to the advance computer language Java script. Code.org, a public nonprofit organization, is dedicated to expanding participation in computer science by making it available in more schools and sparking students’ interest in a fun and interactive way.

In preparation for their study unit on immigration, students in level four and five foreign language classes as well as ENL learners at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School in the Elwood Union Free School District participated in a field trip to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island on October 22nd. To begin the day, more than 50 Elwood students boarded the ferry at Battery Park and traveled to the Statue of Liberty. On Liberty Island, students enjoyed a picnic lunch as well as a view of the NYC skyline and Freedom Tower. At Ellis Island, students explored
the historic building and observed many artifacts dating back to the 19th and 20th centuries. While visiting the Ellis Island museum, students followed in the same footsteps as many of their ancestors through the immigration process, which included questioning in the registry room, medical inspections, legal exams, hearings and the small dormitories people were accommodated in during the process. As a highlight of the day, students admired the American Immigrant Wall of Honor, which commemorates immigrants to America.
In addition, they participated in a scavenger hunt in French, Spanish or Italian based on the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and their exhibits. In the weeks following the trip, students will apply the new information and research they acquired from the field trip into their family ancestry projects and unit on immigration. “The purpose of this trip was to give students a firsthand experience with immigration in the United State since it is a unit studied in each foreign language class and a topic covered on the AP exam,” said Spanish teacher Nicole Gendjoian.
Cultural Cuisines The Oldfield Middle School cafeteria in the Harborfields Central School District was a melting pot of cultures with students, their families and staff gathered to share their favorite cultural dishes, customs and performances during the annual Multicultural Food Festival. Guests at the event
sampled traditional dishes that represented various countries such as Italian, Greece, Ireland, and Latin American. While satisfying their taste buds, attendees had the opportunity to purchase raffles tickets and were entertained with musical performance by OMS students. To kick off the event, sixth-grade students Lily

Cereal Challenge In conjunction with the MLB World Series, students at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District donated boxes of cereal while voting for the team they wanted
to win the World Series. From October 28th through November 3rd, students were directed to place their cereal boxes in shopping carts labeled with the New York Mets and Kansas Royals team logos.
Through their collective efforts, students and faculty collected 120 boxes of cereal, which were donated to the Harborfields Alliance for Community Outreach (HACO) organization.

Uniting for Knights A wave of Knights pride swept over Elwood-John H. Glenn High School during its annual spirit week, leading up to the homecoming parade and game on Saturday, October 31st. The weekend kicked off with a spirited high school pep rally on Friday afternoon, followed by the high school homecoming dance, where seniors Dareus Smith and Morgan Goldstein were crowned homecoming king and queen. The next morning, spirits remained high as students from across the District marched in the parade. United for the district’s homecoming celebration, parents, fellow classmates and members of the community gathered
to cheer and admire the colorful floats, musical performances and student clubs and organizations in the procession. Every graduating class from the high school proudly displayed their float, design around the theme of classic movies. The seniors’ float depicted “The Wizard of Oz,” while the juniors’ float represented “High School Musical,” the sophomores’ float showcased “Beauty and the Beast,” and the freshmen, “Finding Nemo.” The contagious energy radiating from the parade transferred to the bleachers as Knights fans cheered on the Elwood-John H. Glenn High School varsity football team during their battle against the Mount Sinai Mustangs
for a football victory. At halftime, the winner of the float competition was announced with the seniors’ and sophomores’ floats tied for first place, the freshmen came in third place and juniors finished in fourth place. Additionally, fans were entertained with performances by the high school marching band, kickline, cheerleading and dance teams. In memory of Sean Urda, an Elwood student who lost his life last year, a white bench with an engraved message was presented and will be placed in an area near the high school. Thanks to the support of the energetic crowd, the Knights claimed a homecoming victory with a score of 21-14.

Friends of Karen presents its third annual Long Island Gala which will take place on Friday, December 4th at Stonebridge Country Club in Smithtown. The event will honor Rich Panico, President of Symbio, John and Janet Kornreich with Friends of Karen’s Humanitarian Award and Debbie Peck with Friends of Karen’s Shelia Petersen Award. Friends of Karen provides vital, practical and comprehensive support, at no cost, to families in the tri-state region who are caring for a child with a life-threatening illness. Scholarship Opportunities Suffolk Federal is now offering local highschool seniors a chance to win scholarships for college. Suffolk Federal will award scholarships of $1,500 each to ten young deserving members. One scholarship winner will also receive an additional $2,500 scholarship provided by the LT Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship
Foundation which Suffolk Federal will match for a total of $5,000. To be eligible, students must be high-school seniors attending twoor four-year accredited educational institutions for the first time in the fall of 2016. They must also be a member of Suffolk Federal. Applicants will be judged based upon their
academic achievements, extracurricular and community activities as well as the quality of written essays. Last year, Suffolk Federal awarded $20,000 in scholarships. “Each year, we welcome the opportunity to provide financial support to ten deserving local high school seniors as they begin their college experience and future
career endeavors,” said William J. O’Brien, President & CEO of Suffolk Federal. “The Navy SEAL LT Michael Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation is honored to partner with Suffolk Federal in awarding a scholarship to a deserving high school graduate who is a member of this wonderful banking

The day’s activities kicked off at 8:30 a.m., when members of the community gathered to watch students at James H. Boyd Intermediate School parade outside on the field in their Halloween

costumes. Led by the Boyd student band, parents and friends waved as students, faculty and staff members made their way around the assembled circle of onlookers. Students at Harley Avenue also demonstrated their holiday spirit with a costume parade followed by a morning of fun fall activities at the PTAsponsored Harley Harvest Festival. Among the
holiday activities, Harley students tried their hand at stuffing a scarecrow, a beanbag toss, fishing for apples, bowling with candy corn pins and a hula-hoop ring toss. At the end of the festival, students brought home personally decorated pumpkins they selected from the Harley pumpkin patch and other crafts they made during the day.
