In a conference game against Newfield High School of Selden on Friday night October 29, 2021, senior running back Dakim Griffin scored four touchdowns that helped lead Half Hollow Hills East High School to its sixth win of the season against only two losses. The Thunderbirds won 44-14 and Griffin set a Hills East touchdown record. Griffin scored his first touchdown early in the game and then added another rushing touchdown midway through the second quarter for a 21-7 Thunderbirds lead. The run tied the mid1970s touchdown record of James C. Metzger. touchdown later in the game, giving him 29 for the season. He rushed for 275 yards during the game. Metzger’s #21 football jersey was retired by Hills East only two weeks earlier. His school lacrosse jersey, also #21, was retired two years ago. Metzger is the founder and chairman of The Whitmore Agency in Garden City, a leading financial services firm. He also is a Long Island benefactor, supporting nonprofit organizations along with youth athletic and education programs from grade school to college. “I traveled from Manhattan to watch Dakim play [Friday] night,” said Metzger. “Neither I nor anyone else was disappointed in his performance, except maybe Newfield High School. We

all held our breath when he limped off the field soon after the start of the game, but he got back out there and helped lead the Thunderbirds to another win.” Top High School Running Back On the gridiron, 1977 graduate Metzger had been the school’s all-time leading scorer and rusher. He was a Suffolk County All-Star Running Back, starting 25 consecutive games, rushing for 2,155 yards, scoring 27 touchdowns and totaling 170 points. Metzger’s career total offense, including receptions and returns, was 2,777 yards. He led the team in scoring for 1974, 1975 and 1976, and rushing for 1975 and 1976.

Project 9 Line is a non-proﬁt organization that was formed in 2014 by Patrick Donohue Their focus is to bridge the communication gap between veterans and civilians. Through outreach, communication and purpose, they enable veterans to express themselves uniquely through forms of art.

After combat, Patrick got hit right away with some less-than-ideal feelings, such as anxiety and depression. “I was totally lost and alone and I had pushed away everybody I loved and fear ruled my life. Anxiety and depression filled my day and I never thought that I would be able to be a regular person again,” said Donohue. “I avoided everything and everybody to best protect myself from the unknown. Finally when the pain became so great I had a moment of clarity and I asked for help. I checked into the VA hospital in Northport and began the process of what ultimately turned my life around.” Slowly but surely, things started to turn around for him. While he was in the VA hospital, he was exposed to some art and wellness programs that completely transformed the way he viewed himself. “I started writing poetry, meditating, and doing yoga and these activities had a profound impact on me.” He was looking to see if any veteran organization offered those programs and services outside of the VA and he didn’t find any, so at that time he decided that he would build it himself. Probably not even realizing how courageous and strong he really was, Patrick then wrote a business plan for what became this organization (Project 9 Line), so that he could bring art and wellness programs to other veterans on Long Island who might also be struggling. Little did he know that participating in those wellness programs and helping other veterans would become his calling and passion in life. In late 2020, Donohue was sworn in as an attorney and started his own law firm focused on veterans law, specifically VA disability and discharge upgrades. To this day he still runs that firm, and he also is an

“Just a few years ago I had a tough time integrating and now I’m a productive and happy father, husband and attorney. I currently practice meditation, BJJ , yoga, play ice hockey, and I ﬂoat in a ﬂoat tank as often as I can. All of these practices are best for me as they bring me into the moment. I believe the best way to overcome trauma is to be in the moment as much as possible. In the past I have participated in many of Project 9 Line’s programs, including stand up comedy, which also helped me immensely on my journey.” Patrick still works on himself day to day, but knows that even if you face hard times, you can eventually get through them. Covid Continues To Impact Long Islanders Many Won’t Be Able To Pay For A Thanksgiving Meal The Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit the Island Harvest Food Bank will take place on Friday, November 19, 2021, from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The 13th annual food drive will include a no-contact donation car drive-through which will enable community residents to remain in their cars while volunteers remove donations from the vehicles. Long Islanders are asked to donate frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items or cash donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest Food Bank, which will help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than

300,000 food-insecure Long Islanders through its distribution network of over 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other feeding programs on Long Island. Non-perishable food items needed include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices, and shelf-stable milk (please, no glass containers). The Bethpage Turkey Drive will take place at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage. For those unable to make a donation on November 19th, or would rather show their support online, Bethpage is

accepting online monetary donations at http:// www.lovebethpage.com/ turkeydrive, beginning in November, through Friday, December 31st.
