Glenn High School created a float based on a children’s book for the parade. Organizations also participated in the big event. Students and faculty members at Pulaski Road Elementary School welcomed former student and Paralympic gold medalist Mikey Brannigan to the school on October 27th. Brannigan attended Pulaski Road Elementary School from first through third grade. The day consisted of two assemblies with kindergarten through third grade students in the morning, followed by an assembly with third through fifth grade students. Before seeing Brannigan, students heard from Principal Jeffrey Haubrich, school counselor James Durand and psychologist Dr. Veronique Hayek. Durand and Hayek spoke about the meaning of perseverance and how Brannigan was a student who grew into his

where approximately 800 teachers, administrators, technology leaders and vendors shared ideas and learned about the latest technology advancements. Northport High School business teacher Kristen Cogan was recently presented with the 2016 Fred Podolski Leadership and Innovation Technology, Teacher of the Year Award during the Long Island Technology Summit on October 20th. Giving Back Third-grade students in Nicole Taylor’s class at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School recently showed their community support during the Halloween season by collecting gently used Halloween costumes to be donated to a local shelter. The class wanted to give other children the opportunity to have costumes to choose from for Halloween. Taylor created a class rule about five years ago that for every party her class has throughout the year, they must give back in some way to

the community. The class had a Halloween party on October 31st, so their way of giving back was to donate costumes. The class created a donation box which they decorated themselves. The box was then sent to the Family Service League to be given to a shelter. Students enjoyed being able to give back and donated about 15 to 20 costumes. “They come up to me with their own ideas for helping out in the community,” said Taylor. “I have heard from parents that students now look at toys that they don’t

Hometown Hero play with anymore and ask their parents if they can donate them to children in need.” The class will continue giving back to the community throughout the school year by bringing a charitable component to the classroom for every holiday. The next service that they will be participating in is a Thanksgiving food drive. “I think philanthropy is just as important as academics,” said Taylor.

and Maher ran with it. She created her own fox design and the zoo loved it. Maher founded KMaher Designs, created an LLC and found a T-shirt distributor and a printing warehouse. She even delivered the shirts herself to the New York Wildlife Conservation. The shirts were available

for purchase this past June and when it was time to view the final product in the store, Maher was thrilled. The shirts were showcased in a window display at the Bronx Zoo and had their own set up in the zoo store. “It was cool walking in and seeing someone buy

my shirt,” she said. “It was a very surreal feeling.” Maher is no stranger to designing. She created the sophomore and senior class shirts for this year’s homecoming day and plans to take her passion further by majoring in graphic design in college.

November. No sooner has the last of the Halloween candy been given out to the neighborhood trick-ortreaters, than we are faced with the prospect of preparing for the next festive occasion on the calendar… Christmas, apparently. Year after year, the interval of time between the two seems to evaporate into a void of shopping, decorating, cooking and caroling, forgetting the small fact that there exists another holiday in between. I understand that, for some, Thanksgiving doesn’t have the same “fun” appeal to children and adults alike. There are no costumes, no Santa Claus, no presents to speak of… and yet, that is precisely what makes the day so uniquely special.

The entire point, in fact, is to be grateful for that which we have – family, friends, health, happiness – and not be caught up in the materialism that tends to overtake every other occasion. It’s not about the meal, or the football, or the Black Friday shopping deals that continue to creep into Thursday; it’s about the company you spend the day celebrating with. This is the case no matter the holiday, of course; but on Thanksgiving, we tend to step back and appreciate it just a bit more. Or we should. So to all those who enjoy shopping at the mall while being serenaded by Christmas carols over the stores’ PA systems… there will be plenty of time for that beginning on November 25th. Until

then, let’s try to enjoy the remainder of Autumn, the harvest season. Let’s work on planning our Thanksgiving menus and football-watching marathons if we must; but mostly, let us all work on finding things to be thankful for in our lives. Trust me, the Christmas sales and songs will still be there at the end of the month. The spirit of giving doesn’t need to coincide with actual, tangible gifts, nor does it need to wait for any particular occasion. It’s a feeling, an attitude, a sense of appreciation which should be embraced no matter the time. Sure, things can always be better; but they can also always be worse. Thanksgiving is as good a time as any to remember this.

A Harborfields High School student recently transformed her art idea into a business. Senior Katelyn Maher landed a unique opportunity to design a children’s T-shirt for the New York Wild Life Conservation, with her shirts being sold at both the Bronx Zoo and Central Park Zoo. When Maher was only a sophomore, she enrolled in a computer art class with teacher Elizabeth DeVaney and was assigned a final project in which she created her own T-shirt design. She made a geometric animal themed shirt and wore it to school the next day. Not only did her classmates compliment her design, but DeVaney was so impressed that she told Maher that the shirt could be sold in zoos. Maher decided to give the idea a chance and reached out to the Bronx Zoo a few weeks later. She was invited to a meeting to discuss the possibility of having the T-shirt sold at the zoo. The zoo was particularly looking for a design of a fennec fox

The Town of Huntington’s African American Historic Designation Council marked its 10th anniversary October 27th with a program that honored 11 persons central to its creation and to its success over the years. Established with a mission to preserve the unique cultural history of African Americans in the Town, the Council has worked closely with the Town’s Historic Preservation Commission and the Town Historian to create a more thorough narrative of the legacy of African Americans in Huntington. Over the past decade, the Council has published booklets that helped chronicle that rich history, highlighting the development of African American neighborhoods, churches that remain vibrant even today and notable residents, including: Booker T. Washington, who had a house in Ft. Salonga; jazz legend John Coltrane, who lived for a time in Dix Hills; Jupiter Hammon,

during the conference. Stage the Change is a social activist organization that was formed as a way to use the arts to inspire students in communities across New York State and create social change. Originally called the “AntiBullying Project,” this program toured the state and allowed students to

write and share personal perspectives through their creation of thoughtful and conversation-provoking theatre. It has now evolved into a one-day annual conference filled with panel discussions, interactive workshops, keynote speakers and student performances. New York State high school students who wished to participate in the conference submitted originally choreographed and thought-provoking dance pieces aimed at promoting social awareness. the following weeks and answer any questions that the students may have. Presentations throughout Northport High School also took place during RAP week. Guest speakers from various institutions and organizations visited the school and spoke about the impact of drugs and addiction. Students even heard from recovering addicts from the Phoenix House on Long Island. On October 28th, all grade levels attended an assembly where the students heard from Larry Glenz, author of “Forgiving Kevin: A Son’s Addiction Becomes a Father’s Greatest Teacher.” Glenz shared his personal story of his son Kevin’s seven year battle with addiction. Kevin tragically died of a heroin overdose in 2010. Glenz discussed the everyday challenges that one has when hooked on a drug and his son’s highs and lows from rehab to recovery to relapsing. He also provided details on how he handled Kevin’s addiction and the resources that helped him through his son’s battle. At the end of the presentation, students asked questions. Drug and alcohol counselor Anthony Ferrandino helped bring RAP week 2016 to fruition with the intention of helping students get a better perpective of what drugs can do. “I hope it raises the awareness towards the many facets that addiction can play in their lives,” he said.

Students throughout the Northport-East Northport School District recognized RAP (Recovery Awareness Prevention) week from October 24th-28th. The week featured special guest speakers, activities and assemblies dedicated to raising awareness of prescription drugs, alcohol and other unhealthy habits in an effort to highlight the dangerous impact they can have on a person’s life. On October 26th, seventh-grade students at Northport Middle School attended an assembly titled “Beyond the Gateway Drugs,” which showcased the significant effects of drugs on an individual. Officer McVeigh from the Suffolk County Police Department shared personal stories about tragic drug incidents that she encountered while on the job and explained various types of drugs to the students. McVeigh stressed the importance of not sharing prescription drugs with anyone and provided videos of drug commericals to set examples for the students. Seventh-graders also learned about how drugs impact ones body and received a lesson on peer pressure. “I think Officer McVeigh’s presentation was extremely powerful,” said guidance counselor Stacey Chertock. “She kept it real with the students and spoke to them on a level that they could understand. They received some great information.” The school plans to further the discussion about drugs throughout

Students, families and teachers in the NorthportEast Northport School District gathered for an evening of fun during Ocean Avenue Elementary School’s annual fall harvest festival on October 21st. Sponsored by the PTA, students and their families enjoyed a number of games, treats, music and raffles. Different gift baskets

were donated by community members, parents and classes and were raffled off during the event. A number of tables were set up on the field with different activities. Children participated in a variety of activities, including cupcake decorating, pumpkin picking, face painting and dinosaur digging. In addition, many

different games were set up for children to take part in. Teachers and middle school students lended a hand by volunteering at tables and helping run the games. These students gained community service hours for their hard work. “This is such a fun event,” said Principal Sabina Larkin. “I love seeing former students come back to help out.”

Advocates Inspire Eleventh-grade students at Northport High School had the unique opportunity to hear from students’ rights advocate Cathy Kuhlmeier-Frey on October 24th. Project PATCH, the Northport-East Northport School Districts Law-Related Education Program, hosted the event in the high school’s Little Theater. Kuhlmeier shared her personal story about being a high school student in Missouri in 1983 and editing for the school newspaper, The Spectrum. During her time at the newspaper, Kulmeier sought to publish articles on controversial topics such as teen pregnancy and divorce. Although she followed proper protocol to protect student privacy, the principal removed the stories from the

paper. Believing this was a violation of students’ rights to free speech and free press under the First Amendment, Kuhlmeier met with the American Civil Liberties Union. The American Civil Liberties Union represented Kuhlmeier and filed a lawsuit, which eventually made its way to the Supreme Court of the United States. During the presentation, students learned about the highs and lows of the case. The Supreme Court ultimately ruled against Kuhlmeier, finding schools have the power to censor “school sponsored” school expression if it relates to legitimate pedagogical concern. Since the case, Kuhlmeier has been involved in a movement called “Cure Hazelwood,”

to give student journalists more rights. Laws have already been passed in 11 states and the District of Columbia. “One individual can make a difference,” said Kuhlmeier. “Don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself.” Project PATCH Coordinator David Scott was glad that students could hear from Kuhlmeier in person and not just read about the case in their textbook. “We need our young people to be active, informed, engaged participants in our democracy,” he said. “I am hopeful that our students will be inspired by Cathy’s story and that they will think about the issues they are passionate about and how they can use their voices to make the world a better place.”

Young Readers Students and family members participated in Read-In Day at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School on October 21st. The annual event allowed family members to visit the school for a 45-minute reading session with their children or grandchildren in an effort to encourage

reading. Students and staff dressed in comfortable pajamas in honor of the day and family members brought blankets and a number of books to choose from. Students picked a safe spot outside or inside of the building to get comfortable and read.
