In commemoration of Veterans Day 2019, American Legion Greenlawn Post 1244 will conduct its annual Veterans Day Observance at 11:00 am on Monday, November 11th, at Greenlawn Memorial Park, at the corner of Pulaski Rd. and Broadway in Greenlawn. The ceremony, which has been conducted annually for many years by the Greenlawn Post, will be attended by many veterans, government officials and members of the public. This is the only Veterans Day ceremony in the Town of Huntington to take place on the actual date of Veterans Day.
Veterans Day is intended to honor all our military veterans, including the over 18 million living men and women veterans that are still among us. “Historians have said that Dwight Eisenhower was prouder of being a soldier than he was of being the president. And while relatively few veterans ever reach the rank of general, pride in ones’ military service is a bond shared by nearly all who have served,” said Post Commander Donna Boyle. “Fewer than 10 percent of Americans can claim the title “veteran.” Far less than 1 percent of our population is currently defending us in the
Global War on Terrorism. Veterans have given us freedom, security and the greatest nation on earth. We must remember and appreciate them,” Boyle said. The American Legion is the nation’s largest wartime veteran’s organization. Students Learn Kindness And Respect Students at Washington Drive Primary School learned the importance of kindness and respect at the school’s Character Counts assembly. Assistant Principal Kerry Neira led the kindergarten, first and second grade classes through a presentation,
reminding them to extend kindness and respect to the entire school community, including not just teachers but also parents, security guards, custodians, nurses and others. Ms. Neira also reminded them of proper bus and cafeteria behavior, which includes sitting down,
wearing a seatbelt and keeping their hands to themselves. Students who behave well on the bus or in the cafeteria will be celebrated and named either a bus or lunch room superstar. Their photos will be hung on the wall in recognition of their hard work!

New York’s blood supply has never been lower, and New York Blood Center (NYBC) is urgently calling for donors. There has been a significant decline in regular blood donors, and the region’s supply has reached critically low levels. In order to maintain a safe blood supply, a seven-day inventory of all blood types must be continually replenished. Right now, reserves are
below that minimum. October has always been the month to recover, to take a breath and know our blood supply will rebound after the tough summer months. Unfortunately, this year, that is not the case. Our region’s blood supply has never been lower. This critical blood shortage stems from decline in donor base and increased demand for blood. Congratulations to Northport High School senior Marcos Guerrero for being selected as a 2019-20 National Hispanic Scholar by College Board and Scholarship America. Only 4,000 students out of 400,000 students who take the PSAT/ NMSQT are selected for the program each year. Marcos earned a score of 1470 as a junior and was notified of his accomplishment upon entering his senior year in September. After graduation, he plans to major in computer science – a passion that he has developed through the years as a member of the school’s Academy of Information Technology.

Kindergartners at Washington Drive Primary School had an opportunity to explore the Centerport Fire Department’s firetruck and equipment during a fire prevention assembly on Oct. 15. Emergency responders taught the students important fire safety measures, such as stop, drop and roll, and stressed the importance of closing doors to prevent a potential fire from spreading. The children also learned to stay low, visible and near a window
if they ever find themselves trapped in the house in the event of a fire. Additionally, students were encouraged to go home and
ask their parents to check the batteries in their smoke detectors and to review their households’ safety plan in case of an emergency.

Ketewamoke Chapter in Huntington spent their Day of Service restoring gravestones in the historic Old Burying Ground in Huntington. The cemetery, once the site of the Revolutionary War-era fort, known as Fort Golgotha, is located directly across the street from their chapter house. The chapter, founded in 1907, has been intimately involved with this cemetery since it was organized - there are both former chapter members as well as Revolutionary War patriots buried there. With permission from Huntington Town Historian, Robert Hughes, DAR members, trained in proper conservation techniques, gently removed the mold, mildew and lichen that obscured the inscriptions
on these ancient stones. Cleaning these stones not only improves their readability, it also helps prevent the damage that biological growth can cause over time. Chapter members enjoyed helping to preserve the important history of the area by caring for these extraordinary historic graves. This special anniversary also marks another milestone for the Daughters of the American Revolution, who are celebrating their one millionth member, a New Yorker whose membership was approved this month.
