orthport Fire Department officials visited Norwood Avenue School students on October 15th as part of Fire Safety Month, which has been observed throughout the district during October. Firefighters held an assembly for each grade level to discuss fire safety with students. They also parked on the playground and displayed heavy equipment, which students were able to explore. A great time was had by all who participated.

Oldfield Middle School welcomed Harborfields’ families to explore diverse international cultures during an evening of food and entertainment at their Annual Multicultural Dinner on Friday, October 17th. During the community event, families and friends gathered together to enjoy a potluck dinner, filled with a wide spread of traditional international foods. Cultures from all over the world were represented through delicious plates served that evening, including couscous, lasagna, Swedish meatballs, rice and beans and more. Holiday Parade & Street Fest The Fifth Annual Holiday Parade and Street Festival in Huntington Village will kick off at 7 p.m. Saturday, November 29th, as Huntington segues from Small Business Saturday to Long Island’s biggest electric light holiday parade and float contest, which this year centers on the theme “ ’Tis the Season Across America.” The parade drew more than 10,000 people last year. The festivities will include a brief ceremony following the parade to light the holiday tree; the trees on the Village Green and at Town Hall will be lit simultaneously. The tree will be on Wall Street, at the site of a recently demolished building, and will remain there for the entire holiday season, thanks to the generosity of the property owner. Musical performances are planned for the area around the tree after it is lit. The parade will include competitions for the best floats in several categories, with judging based on how well they follow the theme of the parade. Competitors are required to pick a state and create a float that represents the holiday in that state. A competition for the best-decorated business will be held at a later date.
The friendly competition among fire departments is particularly fierce, because the winning department gets to choose who gets to play Santa Claus in the 2015 parade. Numerous fire departments, scouts, and veterans and civic groups are scheduled to participate in the parade, which will begin at the Big H Shopping Center and proceed north on New York Avenue to Main Street, then west along Main Street past the reviewing stand at Wall Street to West Neck Road. Wall Street will be closed to traffic from Main Street to Gerard Street until 9 p.m. for the festival, which will include performances from many local groups and promotions from local merchants. Parents are invited to bring their children to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus and some of their favorite characters, including Snoopy, The Grinch, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Sesame Street’s Elmo and Toy Story’s Woody. The Halesite Fire Department will have Buddy the Elf on board the actual sled used in filming the movie “Elf.” Free hot chocolate and cookies will be served. “This is a special parade in a special place – Huntington Village,”
Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said. “I invite everyone start the day at the village’s unique shops, visit the many restaurants and then to join us to see the fantastic floats the fire departments and other groups put together, followed by an evening of family holiday fun.” The parade and festival’s sponsors include the Town, the Huntington Village and Huntington Station Business Improvement Districts, the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce, the Huntington Manor and Huntington Fire Departments and the Huntington Fire Chiefs’ Council. Free parking is available at the Huntington train station, with a convenient free shuttle from 5 to 10 p.m. Groups wishing to participate in the parade must submit an application form to the Huntington Manor Fire Department, 1650 New York Avenue in Huntington Station, by November 15th. Vets Day Commemoration To mark Veterans Day 2014, American Legion Greenlawn Post 1244 will conduct its annual Veterans Day Observance at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 11th, at the Greenlawn Memorial Park Monument at Pulaski Road and Broadway in Greenlawn. The ceremony, which has been conducted annually for many years by the Greenlawn Post, is attended by many veterans, elected officials and members of the public. “What we now call ‘Veterans Day’ began as ‘Armistice Day.’ It is historically significant that this day continues to
be observed on the 11th day of the 11th month, and at 11:00 a.m., the very hour, in 1918, that the guns of World War I fell silent.” said Bob Santo, Commander of American Legion Greenlawn Post 1244. “Veterans Day is a time to honor not just those who have fought for us in battle, but, in fact, all of the outstanding men and women who served in our nation’s Armed Forces since our founding more than 238 years ago. Not all veterans have seen war, but a common bond that they share is an oath in which they expressed their willingness to die
defending this nation. Today, thousands of Americans are serving in uniform. They sacrifice in the war on terror and in hundreds of locations around the globe so we may remain free. They, too, are veterans, Santo said. The American Legion is the nation’s largest wartime veteran’s organization. Founded early in 1919, the delegates to the first National Convention in Minneapolis broke from business sessions to parade down a main street in a heavy snowstorm at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11th to mark the first anniversary of the armistice.

The Perfect Dress By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The perfect dress. Is there even such a thing? Perhaps. It’s just that, when pressed for time, the search becomes seemingly more futile by the day. Store after store, scanning the racks for something – anything – that stands out and screams you... I suppose I’m atypical in the sense that I’m part of a rare breed of girl that doesn’t enjoy shopping; that is, not when I need something specific, anyway. Send me on a random shopping spree with all the time in the world, and I have no problem dropping several hundred dollars in a matter of hours. But give me an occasion, a short window of time to find something appropriate and,
well, let’s just say that window closes most of the way before I can motivate myself to venture out. Couple that with my deep aversion to being forced to navigate an entire mall, that endless, sprawling layout of department stores and dress shops, and my options become increasingly limited. More often than not, I find myself on the complete opposite side from where I need to be, standing in front of one of the gigantic maps, vainly trying to ascertain the quickest route to my destination. Once in the store, there’s the matter of locating which floor the department you’re seeking is on, which, oddly enough, some employees don’t even seem to have a handle on. So
after riding the escalator up and down and making the rounds of each level, I can then get down to the purpose of my mission – actually pinpointing something I like, finding it in my size and then, assuming steps 1 & 2 go as planned, crossing my fingers that said “perfect” dress is somewhat affordable. Sound simple? Let’s just say my last dress shopping mission, which I began precisely two weeks before the date I needed it, has so far encompassed two different malls, several department stores and random dress shops and resulted in my purchasing two different selections, neither of which I am completely sold on. Crab Meadow Beach Garden Dedication With family and friends looking on, Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and members of the Town Council unveiled a plaque formally dedicating a garden at Crab Meadow Beach in memory of longtime community leader Arthur Goldstein, who passed away in 2012 at the age of 79. Over a distinguished career in both the public and private sectors, Mr. Goldstein served as Huntington Town attorney and counsel for the South Huntington Public Library. He founded the Huntington Narcotics Guidance Council, the Townwide Fund and Leadership Huntington; served in leadership positions at the Huntington Chamber Foundation, the Heckscher Museum and the Huntington YMCA; and was instrumental in creating the Gurwin Jewish Geriatric Center, Touro Law School and the Dolan Family Health Center. “He dealt from his heart in every situation,” Supervisor Petrone said during his remarks to the approximately 75 people who attended the October 24 event. “He was a person who never felt something was a crisis. He always made it work, and for all of us here assembled, he was

The Community Service Award was presented to Daniel Cajigas, a longtime member of the Hispanic Task Force. Mr. Cajigas, a beverage industry executive, is president of The 50 Club, a forum for members in the liquor industry that has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars
for local charities. Mr. Cajigas, who was born in Puerto Rico and raised in the Bronx, is an active member of the Perry Como Lodge of the Sons of Italy in Northport, a past president of the Queensboro Rotary Club and has worked on fundraising for the New York City Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and on golf outings for the Northport American Legion and the Northport Veterans Administration Hospital. He is married and has one son and a granddaughter. Huntington High School principal Carmela Leonardi delivered the keynote address. Dr. Leonardi has served as the high school’s principal since September 2001. Prior to that, she was a principal at two other buildings in the district. Under her leadership, Huntington Intermediate School earned a New York Excellence Award; during her tenure at the high school, the number of Advanced Placement offerings has increased and ESL bilingual courses and programs were refined and increased. She has kept an active role in organizations such as 100 Hispanic Women and Long Island Somos el Futuro. She believes strongly that all students, and especially English language learners, can and should realize their dream of a better future by taking advantage of a strong educational system. Musical selections were performed by the Walt Whitman High School Whitman Quartet and the Triple M Fiesta Band.

It’s an Honor to Serve, Those who Served. Peter Cerreta was an Army pilot who guided his C46 transport plane from Georgia to China over the Himalayas in WWII. He never questioned his duty and completed many dangerous missions. He returned to college after the war and earned his degree as an aeronautical engineer. He continued serving our country in Washington DC, working at NASA, and retired after 40 years in 1982. Each year on Veteran’s Day our communities pay special tribute to those who experiences inspiring. Elwood-John H. Glenn High School students took strides to support Breast Cancer Awareness on October 19th at the Annual American Cancer Society Jones Beach Breast Cancer Walk. Members of the National Honor Society, advised by Diane Locascio, and

On October 20th, the Northport-East Northport Public Library welcomed author and National Book Award finalist Steve Sheinkin to their Annual Speaking of Writing Distinguished Author event. Celebrating the event’s 23rd year, the Library hosted over 200 middle school students from Northport and East
Northport Middle School, where they learned about Sheinkin’s research and writing process for his acclaimed narrative nonfiction titles including The Port Chicago 50, Bomb and Lincoln’s Grave Robbers. An autographed collection of books written by authors who have participated in this program has been created and is part of a
permanent display in the Northport Library Teen Center. This collection was established in memory of Fran Romer, the Young Adult Librarian at the Northport-East Northport Public Library from 19892000. Hundreds of middle school students have been inspired by these authors as a result of her expansion of this program.
