Calming the Chaos By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. So they say, anyway. Me, I tend to bottle all the day’s anxiety and frustration inside, carry it over into the next day (or week) and wait for it to eventually, inevitably, explode – usually at someone who has the misfortune to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Seems healthy and productive, no? Enter: Yoga, that deep breathing, spirit cleansing, relaxation technique that so many swear by. Unfortunately, once a week doesn’t quite cut it when the madness engulfs all aspects of life. Best to take
that meditation practice back home with you, to work, sitting in traffic each morning and evening… everywhere. It’s guaranteed to come in handy. It’s amazing how an act so simple that we take for granted can, when given the chance, alleviate much of what ails us during the daily grind. Breathe in… 1-2-3-4-5-6…Breathe out...and repeat as needed. To infinity (and beyond). I would imagine everyone has stress in his/ her life. The difference lies in how each person handles it, or doesn’t, as the case may be. While some thrive on chaos, others shut down at even the slightest roadblock. Any deviation from the agreed-upon plan
is met with panic. There is no going with the flow, only uncertainty, anxiety and, ultimately, aggravation. The best we can all do is focus on the big picture, on those things that are truly important. As another of my favorite quotations states, Frame every socalled disaster with these words: In five years, will this matter? If the answer is no, move on. Treat those obstacles with the level of importance they deserve – minimal. Few things are worth the time and effort we spend stressing over them. Fine advice if you can follow it. I’m still trying. ‘Til then, breath in… 1-2-3-4-5-6…

explore apples through a variety of hands-on activities. At each station, parent volunteers began the activity by reading a fiction or nonfiction short story about apples. While the kindergartners took turns cutting apple slices at the applesauce making station, they created a paint project using their finger prints to represent apples on a
tree, completed an apple life cycle coloring activity, and created an apple graph after taste-testing different apples and identifying their favorite. Following the lesson, students received small containers of the homemade applesauce to take home and share with their family.

Charlotte Koons, a retired school teacher who has spent 17 years on the board of the Northport Arts Coalition coordinating programs at the Northport Public Library. She also volunteers at Hospice House in East Northport and is a founding member
of Huntington N.O.W., CODEPINK L.I., Women for Peace and is the only woman on the board of the Suffolk Chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Union. She was recognized by Councilwoman Susan A. Berland. Marilyn McDermott, a community activist who has volunteered with Long Island Youth Mentoring, Save the Children, the Salvation Army Angel Tree and World Vision. She feeds and donates clothes to homeless and needy people in the community through the Helping Hands Rescue Mission, the Central Presbyterian Church and the Bowery Mission. She was recognized by Councilman Eugene Cook. Janet Kushnick, a longtime Huntington resident and registered nurse who is on the advisory board for the Dolan Family Health Center, volunteers at Huntington Hospital’s emergency department, Meals on Wheels and the Huntington Historical Society. She is also active at the Huntington Jewish Center, where she cochairs the social action committee, runs the library and has coordinated food drives and rummage sales benefitting the Family Service League. She was recognized by Councilwoman Tracey A. Edwards.
An interactive map and a gingerbread house competition are the newest additions to the festivities for the Sixth Annual Holiday Parade and Street Festival in Huntington Village November 28th, adding to a day’s worth of entertainment and activities that starts with Small Business Saturday and features Santa’s arrival at the end of the parade. The interactive map, which people can access online through their smart phones, will provide information about participating merchants and any offers they might have related to Small Business Saturday or the parade. So far, approximately 20 merchants have signed up, with the expectation that more will join by the time the map goes live around November 15th. Details on the link for the map will be on the Town’s website, www.huntingtonny.gov, once it is live. Bakeries throughout the town have been invited to take part in the gingerbread house competition. The entries will be on display in a storefront on Wall Street, and the public will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite on the 28th. The winning house will move to Town Hall and remain on display there
through the first week in January. “We are very excited by the newest additions to this year’s holiday parade and festival that promise to make it the best one ever by increasing the link between the event and Small Business Saturday,” said Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone. “We hope that residents and visitors will use the interactive map to learn what Huntington Village merchants are doing to make the whole day special, and we look forward to local bakeries’ entries in the gingerbread house contest.” The parade, which draws between 5,000 and 10,000 people to the Village, will kick off at 6 p.m., an hour earlier than last year, starting at the Big H Shopping Center on New York Avenue, proceeding north to Main Street and then west on Main Street to West Neck Road. The parade will include competitions for the best floats in several categories, with judging based on how well they follow the theme of the parade, “Candy Land.” The friendly competition among fire departments is particularly fierce, because the winning department gets to choose who gets to play Santa Claus in the 2016 parade. By popular demand,
The North Shore Pops, which calls itself Long Island’s favorite concert band, will again perform immediately after the parade, playing in front of the holiday tree, which for a second consecutive year will take up residence in the (temporarily) vacant lot at 10 Wall Street. Last year, the tree was a popular picture and gathering spot throughout the holiday season. The Pops’ performance will be one of many throughout the day, with carolers strolling through the village. There also will be musical performances on and in front of the reviewing stand before the parade. After the tree lighting ceremony, the festival will continue on Wall Street. A disk jockey will take over to maintain the festive mood, as children pay a visit to Santa Claus, get their faces painted, play in the bounce houses or enjoy a free cup of hot chocolate, compliments of Christopher’s Restaurant. Meanwhile, parents can visit local merchants’ booths or just relax in front of the tree. Free parking is available at the Huntington train station, with a convenient free shuttle from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and the Town Council marked the Town’s 14th Annual Women’s Networking Day by recognizing five distinguished women for their contributions to the Town. More than 400 people attended the October 20th event, run under the auspices of the Town’s Division of Women’s Services and carrying the theme, “La Vie est Belle.” The event, at The Larkfield, was sponsored by The Bristal Assisted Living and Island Better Hearing. The day was highlighted by presentations to the honorees, each chosen by a member of the Town Board for her achievements in making Huntington a better place to live. The honorees were: Gail C. Lamberta, associate dean of community development; and professor and chair, coordinator of experiential learning, recreation and leisure studies at St. Joseph’s College. She has a long and distinguished career in community involvement, including positions at the Huntington YMCA and the YMCA of Long Island. Dr. Lamberta has been a member of the Long Island Leisure Services Association’s board of directors since 1998 and currently serves as its president, as well as being on the

The Northport Fire Department conducted a Mass Casualty Incident Drill at the National Grid Northport Power Station property on Waterside Avenue on Sunday, October 25th. The drill simulated a Plane Crash with 30 passengers aboard and resulting Mass Casualty Incident, with victims on the power plant property and in the water. Two school buses were utilized as the plane fuselage with some of the passengers still trapped within the wreckage. Junior firefighters and EMS volunteers were scattered in and around the wreckage and were outfitted with simulated injuries. Firefighters used heavy rescue tools to
extricate the passengers from the wreck, as emergency medical crews triaged and treated the patients. Several floating mannequins were also placed in the water for search and rescue operations by rescue boats. Eight local fire departments and ambulance squads participated from the Northport, East Northport, Centerport, Greenlawn, Eaton’s Neck, Kings Park, Hicksville fire departments, and the Huntington Community First Aid Squad. Other agencies that took part in the training exercise were the U.S. Coast Guard, Suffolk County Police, Northport Village Police, Huntington Harbormaster, Suffolk County Fire
Rescue, and National Grid personnel. As part of the drill scenario, the simulated patients were transported by ambulances to Huntington Hospital for their required emergency training. Over 100 firefighters, emergency medical and first response personnel were involved with the drill, using about 20 emergency vehicles and five rescue boats. The drill was held under the command of Northport Fire Chief Joe Pansini, and operations of First Assistant Chief Brad Wine who coordinated the drill, and Second Assistant Chief John Jacobsen.

Students at James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District participated in a creative writing workshop led by award-winning children’s author, Brian Heinz from October 21st-23rd. Gathered in the auditorium, students listened to a presentation from Mr. Heinz about his experience as a writer and
the process of publishing a book. With the use of a ‘road map’ style mural board and dozens of visual aids, students learned how a book becomes reality from raw ideas to a finished product, and the many steps and people involved in the procedure. Over the next two days, Mr. Heinz conducted mini writing workshops with each of the third
through fifth-grade classes, focusing on descriptive writing skills and techniques. Through examples, readings, discussion and interactive exercises, students learned to skillfully reveal the critical elements of a story by captivating the reader’s attention from the opening page.

New Director Appointed The newest addition to the faculty of the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) is an accomplished musical talent. Christopher Scher has a masterful understanding of multiple instruments and has been sharing that gift by teaching others to play for nearly 10 years. He joined LIHSA as a music instructor this fall. The Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts has been offering intensive
training in the visual and performing arts for more than 40 years. Students from both Nassau and Suffolk counties are eligible to attend. LIHSA graduates have gone on to a variety of prestigious colleges and conservatories including the Juilliard School, Boston Conservatory, Cooper Union and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts (just to name a few). At LIHSA, Mr. Scher will instruct courses in music theory, ear training, the
history of western music and digital media. To do this, he will draw on his vast knowledge of musical styles, from classical to contemporary. He will also pull from his background as a private applied music instructor. Mr. Scher has taught guitar at the Rock Underground in Commack, saxophone at the Knox School in St. James and general music at Gil Breines Music in Deer Park. Independently, Mr. Scher has taught students from a wide range
of abilities and ages, mentoring and preparing them for seasonal recitals, ensembles and performances with the New York State School Music Association. At LIHSA, he will also direct the classical instrumental ensemble, drawing from his background as Music Director for the Sagamore Children’s Psychiatric Center and Classical Guitar Director for the Tri-Community Youth Agency in Huntington. Mr. Scher holds a bachelor of music
degree from Five Towns College and a master of arts degree from Stony Brook University. He also holds New York State certification in music instruction for grades K-12. “Chris has tremendous potential for success,” said LIHSA Interim Principal Jack Lenson. “His enthusiasm, knowledge and diverse skill set are an ideal combination for an educator. He is a team player who works well with colleagues and he has a strong rapport
with his students; they’re drawn to him. I believe that Chris has the ability to attract additional interest to the music program and to help us build it into the future.”
