Make the Most of Gameday Entertaining Few things are more exciting and festive for sports fans than gathering with close friends to cheer on a favorite team. Although a large part of the fun involves watching the game, food and other festivities often round out the day especially when fans gather in the comforts of private homes rather than big stadiums.

Having good food nearby is essential when hosting sports fans for a big game, and there are many additional ways to make gameday that much more fun and memorable: Establish the Atmosphere Make the party area more festive by incorporating team colors. Feature these colors on serving bowls, plates, pennants, balloons and more. Remember to ask guests to wear the apparel of their favorite teams, hang photos of key

players and keep a ball on hand so guests can toss or kick it around between plays. Choose Fan-Favorite Foods Game day menu options can include anything from ﬁnger foods to more elaborate appetizers to main courses. Games can take several hours from start to ﬁnish, so make sure you have enough food to cover the duration of the event. Consider favorites like chicken wings, sliders, mozzarella sticks and deli sandwiches. Use a slow cooker to prepare chili or stew. A slow cooker also can be used to cook ribs or hot dogs in bulk. It’s also a handy tool to prepare pork loin for pulled pork sandwiches. Don’t Forget Desserts Desserts are an item you can delegate to guests. If you want to prepare your own desserts, small

and portable items are easier to manage and cut down on the mess while fans are cheering. In addition to the requisite potato chips and pretzels, cookies, brownies/blondies, cupcakes and fruit tarts are all small desserts to consider adding to the menu. Many items can be purchased ready-made if you want to avoid spending hours baking. Create a Viewing Location Guests will want an unobscured view of the game, and this may require moving around some furniture. The television should be located high enough so that all guests have a clear view. Think about moving a sofa to the perimeter of the room and bringing in folding chairs, which will allow a greater number of guests to sit. Tune several televisions to the same channel so guests moving around for food

or to use the restroom won’t miss any big plays. Game Day Beverages Beer and soft drinks are staples of sports-related entertaining and may be all you need to have on hand. You can create a gamethemed cocktail for guests who are not fans of beer. In addition, have water and other nonalcoholic options at the ready. An easy way to ensure drinks are cold is to plug the kitchen sink and ﬁll it with water and ice. Place beverages inside and keep cups nearby. This eliminates the need to drag a cooler inside. When the party ends, simply pull the plug and let the water drain out. Gameday entertaining is very popular. Sports fans can’t wait to gather, root for their teams and socialize with friends.

Cold Weather Outdoor Entertaining Outdoor entertaining has never been more popular. As more and more homeowners turn their homes into their own personal oases, extending the party outdoors has become a bigger priority. According to the American Home Furnishings Alliance’s 2015 Outdoor Furniture Trend Report, out-of-doors areas on a property are the favored venues for celebrations with family and friends. While outdoor entertaining was once relegated to the warm weather seasons, advancements in technology have now made it more comfortable and enjoyable to entertain outdoors for much of the year. But hosts who want to extend the outdoor party after summer has come and gone should consider a

few important entertaining tips: Start the Party Early Summertime backyard barbecues and pool parties beneﬁt from lateevening sunsets that illuminate patios and pool areas well into the evening. In addition, many hosts prefer to start such parties later in the day to avoid the sun during the early afternoon when it is at its most blazing. However, start the party earlier in the day when hosting in fall or early winter. Temperatures can drop considerably once the sun begins to set, so starting early can save hosts and their guests from cold air. Heat Things Up Summertime hosts might employ canopies to protect themselves and their guests from the heat,

and it’s important for hosts to take similar steps when the weather is chillier. The AHFA report found that 38 percent of homeowners intended to purchase fire pits for their outdoor entertaining areas, and such fire pits can keep guests warm as the sun goes down and the night air gets chilly. Fire pits have become must-have items for outdoor entertaining areas, and hosts can surely find one that suits their needs. Change the Menu Grilling hot dogs and hamburgers might still work when entertaining outdoors in fall and winter, but hosts may want to stray from other summertime fare like watermelon or pasta salad. Embrace the cold weather by roasting some nuts and making

s’mores over an open ﬁre. In lieu of summertime beverages like lemonade and beer, serve hot chocolate or wine to keep guests warm. Ensure There is Adequate Lighting Mother Nature won’t offer much lighting when you host a party outdoors in late fall and early winter, so make sure your patios and sidewalks are well lit. This year, I gingerly decided to throw my tap shoes back into the ring by enrolling in my old dance studio’s Adult Tap class, after five years of “retirement.” There is something about the camaraderie of dancing with old friends – alumni, as we are referred to – that brings back a flood of happy memories of days gone by… days spent on stage in tutus and tiaras, sequins and sparkles, smiling for the audience in the dimly lit auditorium as we performed the routines we had perfected over the last six months. So, when the opportunity presented itself this September, I decided to give it a go. I have to admit, I wasn’t

sure what to expect after such a long absence. But, to my pleasant surprise, not much has changed. The old tap shoes still fit, the hardwood floor of the studio shines just as I remembered it, and the steps… well, they’re a work in progress, week by week, as my muscle memory slowly but surely recalls the footwork that at one point had been second nature. They say that those you spend years enjoying extracurricular activities with become like a second family of sorts over time, and the dance studio is no exception – especially after 20 years of essentially growing up with the same core group of girls. Fast forward a couple of decades, and some of these

same “girls” are now married with children of their own – a few dancing at the studio as well – or pursuing careers in various fields. To say “I feel old” would be an understatement; and yet, somehow, once we all enter the studio, those “grown up” problems seem to melt away. Flash back to the little girl in the pale yellow tutu, arms ﬂailing, feet scurrying in a mad dash to join her class onstage for her very ﬁrst dance recital… Where ever did the years go indeed? It’s nice to know that, as our lives continue to move at a frenzied pace day after day, there is still time to step into another mode, lace up the old tap shoes and shuffle our problems away. At least for an hour, anyway.

These activities will be executed by a variety of prominent stakeholders who have come together to form the Project Access Planning Committee. Together with researchers from the LIU-C.W. Post School of Social Work, the Committee will identify the target population for the study and then create two surveys: one for families and one for service providers. The Committee will develop a plan for disseminating the results to the public to increase knowledge as well as to inform advocacy efforts around mental health parity and network adequacy.

Northport High School students engaged in hands-on citizen science with natural resource experts on October 7th to gather physical and biological data along the Nissequogue River to celebrate the second of four “A Day in the Life” events taking place this fall. “A Day in the Life” features students exploring and collecting firsthand information to learn about how the river and estuary fits into the larger ecosystem. Students examine the physical and chemical aspects of the aquatic ecosystem. The goal of the program is to gather as much information about water quality and species

diversity and be able to compare it from one year to the next to determine the impact that Long Islanders are having on our river systems. Teachers Kim Collins, Jim Kubik, Tom Franco and Brittany Klein facilitated the 20 students from three different classes as they began their research in Caleb Smith State Park and later to Willow Pond. Two independent study research students collected more than 20 invertebrates as part of their DNA Barcoding biodiversity study. A highlight of the trip was the discovery of the Mosquito Fish. This was the first time the species was identified in Williow Pond at Caleb Smith State Park.

“One of the things I love most about the ‘The Day In the Life’ program is that it gets students out of the classroom, working in the environment and making them aware of their natural surroundings,” said Kubik. “We are raising the future generation and it is important for them to develop a sense of connection to the environment in which they live.” “A Day in the Life” events will be held on the Connetquot River and locations within the Peconic Estuary, including the North and South Forks and Shelter Island. More than 2,000 students will participate, guided by 38 partner agencies and 40 schools.

JFC, a non-profit organization founded by the jewelry industry in 1999, is dedicated to helping children in need. The recently launched Local Grant Program has set aside $50,000 to fund ten $5,000 grants for local children’s charities around the country. Northport High School music teacher Frank Doyle was recently presented with the 2016 Music Educator of Note Award for his outstanding achievement in Long Island music education by the Long Island Music Hall of Fame (LIMHoF). The LIMHoF celebrates individuals who allow young people to explore their talents. The Music Educator of Note Award is presented to those who have gone above and beyond in working with children in public, private or regional programs.

“The Long Island Music Hall of Fame is proud to recognize the distinguished career of music educator Frank Doyle,” said LIMHoF Education Chairman Tom Needham. “He is a remarkable award-winning teacher, performer, writer and lecturer who is loved by his district, colleagues and students.” Doyle has played a significant role as an educator in the NorthportEast Northport School District. He has been teaching for 40 years and currently teaches Music

Theory to his high school students. Doyle has been an advisor for the Tri-M National Honor Society, vocal director and music arranger for the 10 High School musicals, served as Jazz Band director and has had students selected for NYSSMA AllState in Composition and Electronic Music Composition every year since 2005. Doyle is the second faculty member from Northport-East Northport’s music department to be recognized for this honor. Former Director of Music Education Robert W. Commemorating Veterans Day In commemoration of Veterans Day 2016, American Legion Greenlawn Post 1244 will conduct its annual Veterans Day Observance at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 11th, at the Greenlawn Memorial Park Monument, Pulaski Rd. and Broadway in Greenlawn. The ceremony, which has been conducted annually for many years by the Greenlawn Post, is attended by many veterans, elected officials and members of the public. “What we now call ‘Veterans Day’ began as ‘Armistice Day.’ It is historically significant that this day continues to be

observed on the 11th day of the 11th month, and at 11:00 a.m., the very hour, in 1918, that the guns of World War I fell silent.” said Dennis Madden, Post Commander of American Legion Greenlawn Post 1244. “Veterans Day is a time to honor not just those who have fought for us in battle, but, in fact, all of the outstanding men and women who served in our nation’s Armed Forces since our founding 240 years ago. Not all veterans have seen war, but a common bond they share is an oath in which they expressed their willingness to die defending this

nation.” “Today, thousands of Americans are serving in uniform. They sacrifice in the war on terror and in hundreds of locations around the globe so we may remain free. They, too, are veterans,” Madden said. The American Legion is the nation’s largest wartime veteran’s organization. Founded in 1919 in the aftermath of World War I, the delegates to the first National Convention in Minneapolis broke from business sessions to parade down a main street in a heavy snowstorm at 11 a.m. on November 11th to mark the first anniversary of the armistice.

Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and the Town Council marked the Town’s 15th annual Women’s Networking Day by recognizing five distinguished women for their contributions to the Town. A record crowd of more than 600 people attended the October 20th event, run under the auspices of the Town’s Division of Women’s Services and carrying the theme, “Reflect, Relax, Revitalize.” The event, at The Larkfield, was sponsored by GEICO, A Gentle Touch Senior Home & Healthcare, Island Better Hearing and AgeWell New York. The day was highlighted by presentations to the honorees, each chosen by a member of the Town Board for her achievements in making Huntington a better place to live. The honorees were: Vita Scaturro, a financial industry banker with thirty-eight-years of proven contributions to the areas of new business development, sales management and staff development. Currently, she holds the position of business relationship manager, VP at JP Morgan Chase. She dedicates and spends most of her free time volunteering with several non-for-profit organizations in the Town, including the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce, the Townwide Fund of Huntington, Moonjumpers Charitable Foundation, the Leadership Huntington Foundation and the Lt. Det. Joseph Petrosino Association in America Inc. She was recognized by Supervisor Frank P. Petrone. Annie McClintock, a one-on-one special education teaching assistant in the Harborfields School District who

has been named New York State United Teachers School Related Professional of the Year. She was honored at the White House as part of the CHAMPIONS OF CHANGE Program for her achievements in the classroom. She is also a dedicated homeless services volunteer with the Huntington Interfaith Homeless Initiative, which provides services for low-income and homeless families. She was recognized by Councilman Mark Cuthbertson.

Jamie Wendt, Suffolk County police officer assigned to the Second Precinct who has also served as a Dix Hills Fire Department firefighter and rescue squad emergency medical technician. She has also worked as a figure skating instructor at the Town’s Dix Hills Ice Rink and created a camp activity for the children participating with the the Tri-Community Youth Agency to skate weekly at the rink. She was recognized by Councilwoman Susan

Evening of Recognitions into enlightened and intelligent citizens. Following, Harborfields High School was recognized as an “Exemplary High Performing School” for the 2016 school year in the Blue Ribbon Schools Program by the New York State Education Department. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program celebrates the most skilled and effective educators in public and non-public schools. During the Dec. 14 board of education meeting, Regent Tilles will formally recognize Harborfields High School for this distinction and student

achievement. Continuing the evening of recognition, the board of education honored multiple staff members and students for their devotion and dedication to education, including staff members of the District Advisory Committee, students who were selected to perform in the NYSCAME All-County and NYSSMA All-State concerts, senior semifinalists and commended students of the National Merit Scholarship Program, as well as student and staff volunteers who record the district’s board of education meetings.

A. Berland. Carolyn Licata, a social worker at the Dolan Family Health Center who also organizes job fairs at St. Hugh of Lincoln R.C. Church and, through the Suffolk County Department of Health, baby showers for mothers and babies in need. She also organizes clothing drives and toy giveaways. She also works with the K9 Center, an organization dedicated to humane treatment of large breed dogs that also promotes their safe breeding and training. She was recognized by Councilman Eugene Cook. The Rev. Bernadette Watkins, a Christian leader, community activist, and an adult and teen mentor. She has hosted summer camps, back to school fun days, family and friends’ days and drive in movie nights. She has also been involved in numerous community projects. In 1994 she was appointed to the Town of Huntington African American Task Force. The Rev. Watkins is also an avid member of the PTA. In 2012, she started a summer reading program to encourage and teach children the joy of reading and to help maintain their reading skills during the summer. She is the mother of 4 biological children, 12 adopted children, and 6 children from family members that she raised as her own and many grandchildren. She is also a foster mother, taking children into her home, giving them love and a much needed sense of family. She was recognized by Councilwoman Tracey A. Edwards.

Coming Together

Students and faculty members at Northport Middle School acknowledged National Bullying Prevention Month on October 19th by participating in Unity Day. The schoolwide initiative focused on putting an end to bullying and embracing kindness. The school community was encouraged to wear the color orange to show support. Throughout the week, students and faculty were invited to join the “Pay It Forward with Kindness Campaign,” which allowed to give a Kindness Card

to someone exhibiting a random act of kindness. The goal of the activity was to spread kindness around the school as the cards got passed along from one person to the next. During the day, a kindness keeper box was placed in the cafeteria and students and staff were welcomed to fill out a card with a random act of kindness that they completed or witnessed. Sixth-grader Ella Piscatello did a special act of kindness for her friend and placed her card in the box.

“It was my friends birthday so I got her a balloon and card,” she said. The cards were later displayed on a Unity Board in the cafeteria to allow students and faculty to read all good deeds going around the building. “We are looking to create a really loving and caring sense of community,” said Assistant Principal Dr. Chelsea Brown. “Unity is within the word community and we want to continue to make Northport Middle School a great place to be.”

• Gabriela Velasco, a Harborfields High School junior The Community Service Award was presented the Rev. Rose Marie Meringola Gaines. A lifelong Huntington resident, the Rev. Gaines and her husband, the late Rev. Jimmie Gaines, founded the Helping Hand Rescue Mission in Huntington Station in 1965. For the past 51 years, the mission has provided thousands of persons with a kind word, prayer, bible study, food, clothing, household items, school supplies, Easter and Thanksgiving baskets and community programs. In the aftermath of Super Storm Sandy, the Helping Hand Mission provided food for displaced Huntington residents at Town shelters and warming centers. She founded the Happy Day

Express children’s program, which spawned the Light of Salvation Church on New York Avenue. Currently, she also co-pastors the Half Hollow Community Church in Dix Hills with her daughter, the Rev. Kimberly Marie Gambino. Dr. Javier R. Vieytez, a pediatrician who has practiced in Huntington Station since 2003, delivered the keynote address. Dr. Vieytez’ mother is Colombian and his father is Salvadoran. In his remarks, he spoke of growing up in El Salvador, being sent to high school in the United States because of civil strife in El Salvador and of returning there to attend college and medical school. He related the challenges of learning to practice medicine against the backdrop of the civil war there and spoke of how he completed his medical training at Nassau University Medical Center before opening practice on Long Island. “As I stand with the members, children and young people in this community, as I talk to them every day and see the great potential that each one of them has, their challenges become mine. As I try to find ways to help them overcome them, first in their own spirits and minds, and help them believe in themselves that they are great and can realize their potential and dreams, but that they have to believe that first,” Dr. Vieytez said in concluding his remarks. “Finding our way in life is easier if we make the most of every blessing and opportunity that is available to us, and if we are willing to listen to the voices of life itself, which many times speak to us through our own hearts.” Musical selections were performed by the Huntington High School Chamber Choir and the South Huntington School District’s Dual Language Super Stars.
