Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, working in conjunction with County Executive Steve Bellone unveiled a new mobile app today that will provide access to drug addiction services for those needing assistance. The app, Stay Alive L.I. is currently available in Android format and will soon be available in Apple format. It provides information on how to recognize and prevent opioid overdoses, where to get help with drug addiction services, the locations of hospitals and treatment centers, links to organizations and hotlines, and information on training to administer Narcan medication for overdoses. “With a growing number of overdoses in Suffolk County we have been vigilant with instituting creative solutions for dealing with this epidemic. This app is just one weapon in the fight,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “Too many lives have been lost and as new, deadlier drugs infiltrate our communities, the number of deaths will continue to rise unless we have the resources to provide assistance. This app will put vital information for treatment and recovery into the hands of those suffering drug addiction as well as their family members and will hopefully result in more lives saved.” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said, “We are fighting back against the opioid epidemic with more enforcement, better treatment, and new technology in the palm of your hand. This mobile app developed by Suffolk County will inform more residents through a new medium of vital treatment and information available for those suffering with addiction. Turkey Drive Benefit Long Island’s largest food drive event, the 9th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank, will take place on Friday, November 17th, from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Donations can be dropped off at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage. Long Islanders are asked to drop off frozen turkeys, nonperishable food items (except those in glass containers), supermarket gift cards,

or cash donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest Food Bank, which will then help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than 300,000 foodinsecure Long Islanders through its distribution network of over 550 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other feeding programs on Long Island. “Over the past month, we have seen the great generosity of Long Islanders as thousands helped support people in need across our country and

To help you, the three proposals are summarized below: The first proposal: “Shall there be a convention to revise the Constitution and amend the same?” is offered by law every 20 years to the electorate. If the vote is negative, there will be no convention. If the majority vote yes, there will be a convention in 2019 to consider amendments to the New York State Constitution. In November 2018, delegates will be elected by the voters - three from each state senatorial district and 15 at large. The amendments that are adopted by a majority of the delegates will be submitted to the voters for their approval at least six weeks after the convention adjourns. Proponents of the convention hope that it will affect election voting and ethics reform, changes that have been proposed to the legislature but never passed. Other areas for improvement are judicial reform, environmental issues, and health care and women’s issues. Opponents of the proposal are concerned that it may lead to a complete overhaul of the state constitution, removing or revising protections of state pensions and collective bargaining, the Adirondack Forest Preserve and school funding. The second proposal: “Allowing the complete or partial forfeiture of a public officer’s pension if he or she is convicted of a certain type of felony” would allow a court to reduce or revoke the pension of a public officer who is convicted of a felony that has a direct and actual relationship to the performance of the officer’s duties. In reaching this determination, the court must consider

the seriousness of the crime and whether the forfeiture would result in undue hardship to dependent children. If approved, the amendment will apply only to crimes committed on or after January 1st, 2018, because the New York Constitution now provides that the benefits of a public pension or retirement system cannot be reduced or impaired. The third proposal: “Authorizing the use of forest preserve land for specific purposes” would create a land account with up to 250 acres for use by towns, villages and counties that have no viable alternative to using forest preserve land to address specific public health and safety concerns. Another 250 acres will be added to the forest preserve as a substitute for the land removed. The proposed article would allow counties and townships of certain regions to conduct repairs on road and bridges and allow for the installation of new bike paths, broadband internet and water well infrastructure. Although the Adirondack Forest Preserve is protected by the “Forever Wild” clause of the constitution, local governments, elected officials and the NYS DEC all support this amendment, feeling it is necessary for the safety of residents and to ensure that quality of life is maintained. Polls in Suffolk County are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Election Day, November 7th. Many voters are unprepared when they arrive at the polls, unaware of what offices are on the ballot, what each candidate stands for, and unfamiliar with state or local propositions on the back of the ballot. Yes, the ballot is frequently confusing and the print can be quite small (NYS election law requires a one-page ballot; lobby your state Senator and Assembly member if you think this merits review). The old lever machines are gone - there was no way to verify whether they were accurately recording each vote - and, for the past few years, voters have been using optical scanners, which are verifiable via a paper trail. The Suffolk County ballot will include candidates for judges, district attorney and sheriff. All 18 Suffolk County Legislature seats are on the ballot as well. Locally, there are elections for various town offices. Do your research and come to the polls prepared. Watch for news of candidate forums in your community and articles in your local newspaper or visit www.Vote411.org. This fall, Spirit Week at Elwood Middle School was coupled with daily kindness challenges. To encourage true spirit amongst students, the daily themes, such as pajama day, hero day or Elwood day, were paired with acts of kindness, including lending a helping hand or telling someone why they’re important. Students enjoyed the combination of these two

ideas, feeling a renewed sense of unity with the friends they’ve been attending school with since kindergarten. “All week, people have been complimenting each other, and it’s really nice to hear,” said eighth grader Grace Porter. “Everyone’s been saying ‘I like your spirit,’ and it’s just a nice reminder that going to Elwood is like being a part of a family.”

In the halls, students passed each other, waving and complimenting others on their attire of the day. In the cafeteria, students stuck positive post-it comments onto posters and hung them on the walls. “Solidifying the idea that we should treat everyone with kindness is definitely an important life lesson,” said Principal Christina Sapienza.

Knights Unite After kicking off the weekend with a spirited pep rally, Elwood-John H. Glenn High School students and the greater Elwood community came together on October 21st for homecoming festivities. This year, parade floats were video game themed, and each class designed their own floats. The freshman class showcased Angry Birds, the sophomores chose Yoshi, the juniors were Poké-masters, and the senior class depicted an old-school Pac-Man machine, complete with

suspended ghosts. Homecoming king and queen Brandon Schindlar and Jazmine Bush led the parade in a convertible, waving regally to the people lining the streets. Organizations from the community, including the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, participated with the high school cheerleaders and marching band, as well as the middle school band and kickline. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert, along with board of education members, administrators and district

staff, also participated in the spirited parade. At the football game against Amityville, the team burst onto the field to thunderous applause from the crowd, while the cheerleaders provided added spirit. During halftime, the marching band and the kickline performed popular songs that had the audience dancing. The exciting game ended with the Knights defeating Amityville, 4113.

MAUREEN’S HAVEN!

Maureen’s Haven is a local organization that helps homeless men and women around Long Island. This program brings a variety of organizations and houses of worship together to help meet the needs of the homeless during the cold winter months, which is known as their Emergency Shelter Program, starting on November 1st and running through March 1st.

The host facilities and supporting organizations provide not just a place for the homeless to sleep, but a nutritious dinner, breakfast and a packed meal to go. They provide support by embracing the values of human dignity, respect, service, compassion, teamwork, diversity and love.

In addition to meeting their immediate needs, Maureen’s Haven strives to place individuals in supportive housing, which provides consistent shelter and case management. Over the past three years, Maureen’s Haven has placed over 30 individuals in housing, provided counseling and assistance with job search and placement, and offered

After meeting recently with Maryann, the Executive Director of this wonderfully compassionate organization, and taking a tour of their day center, I came away with a much better understanding of who they are and what they do. The warm sincerity I felt while hearing her speak about the heart of this organization and experiencing what it’s like to be at their day center was quite emotional and aweinspiring. Maureen’s Haven is currently in need of various donations and volunteers. The Simple Things As we usher in November, we tend to take stock of the year as a whole - where it stands, those goals we had intended to achieve along the way, and how the two correlate. Life is a constant evaluation in that way. While the month may be centered around the beginning of the holiday season, the concept of Thanksgiving is one that can be applied throughout the year. Perhaps this is why it is one of my least favorite holidays, simply for the fact that it seems short-sighted to designate one particular day to “be thankful.” What about the other 364? It shouldn’t take a turkey dinner and wallto-wall football games to gain that needed perspective. Before the commercialism of the “season of giving” took over, it was simply an opportunity to spend time

with family and friends, to gather over food and reminisce, and to make new memories along the way. Looking through old photo albums, the one thing that resonates through the years is the sense of togetherness that always existed; so strong you can practically see it reverberating off the pages. This is a feeling that one can only hope to recapture with each passing year. All the shopping, the cooking, the cleaning, the decorating, the wrapping… what is it for, if not that moment when everyone comes together to enjoy one another’s company. It’s the little things that matter - a special greeting card with a thoughtful inscription, remembering someone’s favorite type of dessert, a lovingly wrapped gift topped with a beautiful bow. The rest, as they say, is

merely window dressing. While the year may be drawing to a close, there is still plenty of time to refocus on those goals we may have allowed to slip through the cracks. Days and months and years are but markers of time; the moment itself is what matters. The only deadlines we should pay mind to are those we set for ourselves. The plan is always evolving, and so, too, must we. Don’t think of it as two months left to achieve a particular task; or two months left until the clock resets and we can put 2017 behind us for good - neither approach serves us today, now. Math Educator a Master

Northport High School math teacher Kristen Rozell was recently named a New York State Master Teacher. The Master Teacher Program is composed of the highest performing teachers and educators in the subjects of science, technology, engineering and math. Once accepted into the program, through letters of recommendation and a rigorous interview process, teachers enter a four-year commitment. This commitment includes

peer mentoring and professional development opportunities, as well as monthly regional meetings with other Master Teachers. “Kristen embraces professional growth,” said Chairperson of Mathematics Robin Rann, “so this is a well-earned accomplishment. We’re extremely proud of her.” Rozell, a graduate of Northport High School, started her teaching career in 1999. She attributes her inspiration to pursue math in college to the

great teachers she had throughout her high school career at Northport. She truly loves being a math teacher and is honored to have been one of the selected Master Teachers. “I’m really looking forward to jumping into this program,” said Rozell. “It’s exciting. Halfway through my career, I get to try something different. I have the opportunity to learn more and bring new ways of teaching to my classroom.”

Favorite Poem Project Walt Whitman Birthplace Association (WWBA) is excited to announce the continuation of its Favorite Poem Project event as part of its Salut au Monde series. The event will take place Sunday, November 12th, from 2 to 4 p.m. and is designed to encourage participants of all ages and from all walks of life to send in their favorite classic published poem (not self-written) with a brief explanation of its personal significance, and to attend the celebratory reading event at the Birthplace.

Select entrants will be asked to read their submissions, followed by an open mic available to walk-ins. Danielle Campbell, news anchor from Cablevision News 12 Long Island, will emcee the event. Poems submitted by deadline will be included in event program. The Favorite Poem Project was founded by former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky shortly after the Library of Congress appointed him to the post in 1997. Pinsky created the project to celebrate,

document, and encourage poetry’s role in American lives. When Pinsky put out a nationwide call for Americans from all walks of life to send in their favorite poems, he received over 18,000 responses. Pinsky’s project ignited a fire that spread across the country with communities holding their own Favorite Poem poetry readings. The Library of Congress videotaped for its archives 50 individuals from these communities reading their favorite poems. See www. favoritepoem.org for more details.

Thanks to hard work, research and a passion for science, Northport High School junior Katie Sierra was named a semifinalist in the 2017 Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology. Every year, students from around the country submit research projects to compete on a regional and national level for college scholarships. There were 491 semifinalists

a published study that she completed with research partner Brian Torres from Brentwood High School. The goal of the project was to examine the effect of plastic surfactants, or the chemicals that coat most plastics, on marine environments and the creatures that inhabit them - specifically the Blue and Ribbed Mussels. Overall, their findings showed that plastic toxins negatively affected the filtration systems and capture efficiency of both types of mussels, which can upset entire ecosystems. “It was amazing to be honored in such a prestigious competition,” said Sierra. “I put so much work into this submission, and it was incredible to see my summer at Stony Brook pay off.”

The Harborfields Board of Education recognized both staff and students at its October 18th business meeting. Senior Emma Johnston, who was named a National Merit Semifinalist, was recognized for her academic excellence and receiving a PSAT score that placed her within the top 1 percent in the nation. In addition, music students selected for NYSCAME All-County and NYSSMA All-State were recognized by the board

marching band for their performance at the Newsday Marching Band Festival. He marveled at the amount of support the Harborfields community members give one another. “The entire varsity and JV football teams were outside, cheering for the band as they left for the competition,” said Dr. Ianni. “That is a testament to the genuine care for others that runs deeply within our students.”

Raising Money for Relief In an effort to raise money for Hurricane Harvey relief, the Oldfield Middle School Student Government in the Harborfields Central School District recently screened an outdoor movie

and sold tickets for $6. The chosen film, Jumanji, was shown on a large screen behind the school. Students came out with their families, bringing blankets and chairs to watch the movie

and support the cause. The $1,000 raised will be donated to hurricane relief through Adopt a Classroom, which assists schools impacted by the recent hurricanes.

their own Halloween parade, like we’re used to having,” fifth-grader Fallon said. “It feels good to help people who are less fortunate.” Many even gave up their recess period to help empty the boxes of costumes. The school collected 10 large garbage bags of costumes for the 350 children living at the shelter. “Now these children can have a super cool costume on Halloween and have fun,” said fifth-grader Elliote. “All because of the kids here at Dickinson.”

Art Scholarship The Art League of Long Island is pleased to announce an art scholarship sponsored by Woodbury-based law firm Salenger, Sack, Kimmel & Bavaro, LLP. The Joseph J. Fenty, Jr. Memorial Scholarship will award two returning combat veterans, currently residing or originally from Long Island, with a formal art education at the Art League’s visual arts center in Dix Hills. As supporters of the men and women serving in the

armed forces, Salenger, Sack, Kimmel & Bavaro partners were touched by Art League of Long Island Executive Director - and Gold Star Mom Charlee Miller’s loving remembrance of her son Joe Fenty. As an Airborne Ranger & Commander of 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, Lt. Colonel Fenty was a brother and mentor to the soldiers he commanded. On May 5th, 2006, he and nine soldiers were killed

while serving in the Kunar province in Afghanistan when a CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed during combat operations. “I am grateful for Salenger, Sack, Kimmel & Bavaro’s gift to our heroes returning from combat, and for honoring the memory of my dear son Joe,” said Miller. In life he was a loving husband of Kristin, his wife of 20 years. Joe became a dad for the first time in April 2006, never having had the opportunity to hold little

After earning a degree in business management he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant from UNCC Charlotte, and in the ensuing years he earned his masters in education from Troy State University. An elite athlete, he was a marathon-runner, an ultramarathon runner, a crosscountry skier, mountain biker, and kayaker. He also was a proud supporter of the arts and recognized how it nurtured the mind and the soul.

Gang Conference a Success Hundreds of law enforcement experts gathered at the Radisson Hotel in Hauppauge on Thursday, October 19th for the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office’s Annual Gang Intelligence Seminar. The event, which is in its 11th year, was started by Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco in 2006, and is recognized as one of the nation’s foremost events

for gang-related information sharing and education. It is co-sponsored in conjunction with the Middle AtlanticGreat Lakes Organized Crime Law Enforcement Network. Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco, who is also the Chair of Suffolk County’s Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, has made partnering with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to

eradicate criminal gangs a priority of his work in public office. Among the presenters at the 2017 forum were Al Valdez, Ph.D. and Joseph Kolb. Dr. Valdez is a nationally recognized trainer and consultant in the areas of youth violence, gang sociology, behaviors, investigations and prosecutions. During Sheriff DeMarco’s opening remarks,

he recognized Dr. Valdez for kicking off the first Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office’s Annual Gang Intelligence Seminar more than a decade ago, and for his expertise in the field. Joseph Kolb, the Acting Executive Director for the International Association for the Study of Organized Crime and the Executive Director of the Southwest Gang

Information Center, provided the attendees with a detailed overview of the impact of the federal Unaccompanied Alien Children program in local communities, how it must be reformed, and how it has correlated with an increase in MS-13 gang activity. Sheriff DeMarco called the ongoing success of the annual seminar an important achievement of his

Administration. He stated, “For the past 11 years, we have seen this annual event grow from a small group of law enforcement professionals to a diverse cross-section of federal, state and local police and community partners working together to share intelligence and information in our fight against gang proliferation in the United States and worldwide.”
