Change Your Clocks, Check Your Smoke Alarms As New Yorkers prepare for the end of Daylight Saving Time, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) is reminding all New Yorkers to check the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors and test that they are functioning. Homeowners with alarms that have sealed-in batteries should check that their alarms are still operational. New York State has experienced a particularly tragic year, leading the nation in civilian fire deaths. According to data from the US Fire Administration, 92 civilians in New York have died in fires in 2019. This is particularly troubling given that the winter, typically the busiest time of the year for home fires, is still yet to get underway. Working smoke alarms save lives. According to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) three of every five home fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms or in homes lacking smoke alarms. A quarter of all smoke alarm failures are caused by dead batteries. Recent changes in New York law will help address this. On April 1st of this year, a new State law
went into effect requiring that retailers only sell smoke alarms with 10year non-removable batteries. Smoke alarms equipped with sealed-in, non-removeable batteries are nearly impossible to disable and require little maintenance. This law is intended to reduce the high number of home fire deaths across New York State. “The busiest time of the year for home fires is upon us. All New Yorkers should protect themselves by checking that their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are functioning properly,” said FASNY President Steven Klein. “Smoke alarms provide people with critical time to escape their homes in the event of a fire. We also encourage everyone to install sealedin smoke alarms with non-removeable batteries. In addition, fire sprinkler systems are proven to save lives and these systems should be installed wherever and whenever possible.” Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Tips from FASNY: Test alarms at least once a month by using the test button. If you have a smoke
alarm with a removable battery, be sure to check the batteries every six months and change the batteries every year. If a battery is starting to lose its power, the unit will usually chirp to warn you. Do NOT disable the unit. Vacuum or blow out any dust that might accumulate in the unit. NEVER borrow a battery from an alarm to use somewhere else. NEVER paint a smoke or CO alarm. Install at least one smoke alarm on every floor of your home, including the basement, and in, or near each sleeping area. Smoke alarms should not be installed near a window because drafts could interfere with their operation. Families should also develop and practice a home fire escape plan. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for testing smoke alarms and replacing the batteries. District Recognizes Elwood’s Noble Knights In honor of Board Recognition Week, Elwood Board of Education members were treated to a performance by John H. Glenn High School Chamber Orchestra at their meeting on Oct 18. Under the direction of Karen Gellert, the ensemble kicked off the meeting with a beautiful rendition of the StarSpangled Banner. Immediately following the group’s performance, the board members were gifted black polo shirts with the words “Elwood Knights” embroidered above the pockets. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert extended a bout of gratitude to each of the
district’s board members, thanking them for their continued dedication to the school community. The board then reciprocated those remarks to honor 11 outstanding John H. Glenn High School faculty members as “Noble Knights.” Recipients included Susan Campo, Nicole Correia, Shannon Flores, Ilene Fucci, Nicole Gendjoian, Samantha Heuer, Tracy Ott, Joseph Pushee, Joanna Sepp, Diane Warren and Kristen Wertz. Each were nominated by a fellow colleague and received a certificate on behalf of Principal Carisa Burzynski, Dr. Bossert and the board of education.

The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. Every bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they are bringing the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! Each event has been going great, with up to hundreds of guests each night! The remaining events will run on October 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. On Halloween, their event will be kid-friendly! There will be no actors and walk through tours of their haunted house will be given. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a nonprofit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, nonmedical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. 6 Tricks For Storing Halloween Treats Halloween is a favorite day for many children and even a number of adults. Halloween offers revelers the opportunity to dress up in costume, play tricks on unsuspecting individuals and cap off the day with treasure troves of candy. Approximately 600 million pounds of Halloween candy is sold each year in the United States. Around 90 million pounds of that is chocolate. The National Retail Foundation notes that more than two billion dollars is spent on candy come Halloween. But most of that candy will never be eaten. Many households take in more candy than they know what to do with on Halloween. Couple that with any leftover candy that may not have been grabbed by trick-or-treaters, and that’s quite a bounty of lollipops, chocolate bars, candy corn and taffy to manage. Rather than relegate candy to the trash can, proper storage and some other tips can preserve treats long after Halloween has come and gone. 1. Go nutty first. Nuts and oils will not last as
long as some other candy ingredients. Consume candy that is full of nuts first. You can try freezing candy containing nuts, but there is no guarantee the texture will remain the same upon thawing. 2. Keep an eye on chocolate. Chocolate needs to be kept under cool conditions to prolong its shelf life. The National Confectioners Association says dark chocolate can be kept for one to two years if wrapped in foil and stored in a cool, dark and dry place, such as a pantry. Milk and white chocolate have a more limited storage time of no more than eight to 10 months. Hershey’s does not recommend putting chocolate in the refrigerator, as doing so can affect texture. 3. Candy corn can endure. This symbol of the season is a durable treat. If left in the original and unopened packaging, candy corn can last a few years. The manufacturer of Smarties says that its candy can last up to three years if unopened. The cooler and drier the conditions for storing the candies, the better.
4. Keep original packaging. The wrappers used to house the candy were designed to keep it fresh. Candy that has been exposed to the elements will degrade faster. When original packaging is unavailable, glass or plastic containers with airtight lids can keep Halloween candy fresher, longer. 5. Manage moisture. Candies like mints, caramels and hard candies can absorb moisture. They should not be mixed with other candies that can lose moisture, such as fudge and creamy confections. The NCA notes that hard candies can stay hard if sprinkled with finely ground sugar and stored in airtight containers. 6. Use candy in other ways. If eating chocolate bar after chocolate bar becomes tiresome, repurpose candy in different recipes. Chocolate can replace chips or morsels in cookies. Use hard candies to garnish cakes. Melt down caramels to use for ice cream toppings or chop up nutty candies to make your own sundae toppings.
Huntington DAR Sends Care Packages to Troops On Saturday, October 19th, Ketewamoke Chapter, NSDAR assembled and shipped 24 care packages for service members deployed to the Middle East and military patients being treated at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. The packages, containing personal care and comfort items, food, and notes of support and appreciation from chapter members, is one of many ways that the DAR chapter
supports our military and veterans. The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, a women’s service organization founded in 1890, has sent thousands of care packages, and has a committee, Project Patriot, dedicated to supporting America’s military service members and their families. Members of the DAR share a common connection; all descend from men and
women who supported the cause of American Independence during the Revolutionary War. Over 1 million women have been admitted to membership since the organization’s founding 129 years ago.
