several things, but excel in one thing. As decades have passed, colleges no longer look for the wellrounded student, but for the well-rounded class. This means that every college needs a class full of athletes, academic giants and leaders, among various other classifications. Gone are the days where the jack-of-all-trades student could virtually assure him/herself of acceptance anywhere. Now, the student that is well versed in one particular trade is arguably more appealing to an admissions officer. In addition to excelling in a particular field, a student can benefit from a “legacy situation.” This jargon
is another way of saying that, if a parent attended a specific college, you have a hook. My parents went to SUNY Oneonta, so if I applied there, theoretically, I would have the edge over an identical candidate with parental ties to SUNY Oswego. This link is beneficial to a college in an unexpected way. A long line of graduates with your last name opens up the door for big donations. Although I am just a senior with very basic knowledge of the college admissions process, I should be able to guide my little brother through what was arguably the most stressful segment of my life thus far.

The grant will allow Stony Brook researchers such as Dr. Nehm to expand the development of innovative assessment tools for large undergraduate STEM classes. Also on the research team is Dr. Minsu Ha, Stony Brook’s first science education postdoctoral researcher and an expert in machinelearning methods in educational assessment and assessment design and evaluation. “Drs. Nehm and Ha are exactly the individuals we want to bring to Stony Brook in our quest for international leadership in science education,” stated David Bynum, founder of CESAME. “The NSF grant is one that will propel Stony Brook to the top of the mountain as a powerhouse of STEM education.” Along with Stony Brook, five other universities were recipients of the grant: Michigan State University, University of Colorado, University of Georgia, Western Michigan University and the University of Maine. The grant builds on an earlier partnership between these institutions to develop automated scoring systems that allow students to practice their written explanations, arguments and communicative skills. “This is the first time that research on such a large scale has been brought into undergraduate science, technology and math education,” said Dr. Nehm, who is PI on two additional NSF projects focusing on science education research.

In collaboration with the Lions Club International Foundation, the Long Island Lions Quest Initiative recently announced the awarding of a Core 4 grant of $133,000 to help Long Island schools train teachers and provide materials for the K-12 Lions Quest program, a proactive initiative to create safe, supportive and successful schools on Long Island. Through this grant, proactive schools in Nassau and Suffolk counties are set to create safer and more supportive schools through Lions Quest, which meets the new Dignity for All Students Act curriculum requirement. Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci hosted an information meeting at Farmingdale State College on October 9th during which legislators and school officials learned about the program. Lions Quest, an evidence-based program, focuses on social and emotional skill building, bullying, substance abuse and dropout prevention, and service learning. The Lions Quest program is designed to create a positive and safe school climate for students and teachers, and unite the home, school and community. Highly effective programs like Lions Quest have been proven to decrease problem behaviors while increasing academic achievement, pro-social behaviors and connectedness to family and school. The program includes a carefully sequenced elementary, middle school and high school curriculum and helpful guidelines for parent meetings, service learning strategies and a school climate committee. The grant will be used to subsidize the cost of training Long Island teachers and administrators in the implementation of this program, which helps reduce the cost to school
districts and taxpayers. The implementation of Lions Quest across Nassau and Suffolk counties is in collaboration with the Lions clubs of both counties, and Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), the official charitable organization of Lions Clubs International. Western Suffolk BOCES will be providing the one-day professional development workshops to train educators. Districts that participated in training last spring and who have already received grant awards are Commack, Freeport and Merrick Schools. Other districts in the process of submitting grant proposals include Eastport-South Manor, Huntington, Long Beach, West Babylon and Woodward Children’s Center. Several other districts attended information sessions and are considering the program. “As a career law enforcement officer, I’ve seen the consequences of drug use and the need for quality prevention education. But I’ve also seen firsthand the impact that high-quality programs like Lions Quest have on our communities,” said Al Brandel, Past
International President of Lions Clubs International and a member of the West Hempstead Lions Club. “It is vital that schools, families and communities come together and insist on bringing social and emotional education to our schools, and I’m proud to join with my fellow Lions members to expand this initiative on Long Island.” The implementation of Lions Quest will help schools in Nassau and Suffolk counties meet the requirements of the Dignity for All Students Act. This legislation requires all New York schools to provide learning environments free of discrimination, bullying and harassment. A key component of the law is providing Kindergarten through twelfth grade instruction in civility, citizenship and character education. “Teachers who implement the program discover that strong bonds and positive relationships develop in their classrooms, while students develop important skills such as working collaboratively, making informed decisions, solving problems, and achieving their goals,” explains Joan Fretz, co-founder of the LI Social Emotional
Literacy Forum. “Students then choose to contribute positively and that maximizes instructional time. Lions Quest lessons include highly effective teaching strategies and are well-correlated with the Common Core Learning Standards, teacher evaluation competencies, d i f f e r e n t i a t e d instruction, and the Dignity Act curriculum requirements.” As part of the long-term vision for the initiative, LCIF will prepare two affiliate trainers for Nassau and Suffolk counties to help the Lions districts meet their future training needs and create sustainability for the program. Data collection and evaluation will be conducted over the span of the next two years to determine the effectiveness of Lions Quest with a specific focus on the goals of the Dignity for All Students Act. Lions Quest has trained more than 500,000 educators and positively impacted more than 12 million students in 80 countries, making it one of the most widely-used social and emotional learning programs in the world.
RAISING FUNDS - On October 15th, the residents of St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center held a fundraiser for Breast Cancer Month. The residents hand crafted bracelets and donated all their proceeds to the Breast Health Services Department of St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center. All the bracelets contained the color pink and/or breast cancer ribbon symbol in honor of Breast Cancer Month. In total, funds raised were $715 for this great cause. The unsold bracelets are also being donated to patients of the Breast Health Center.

Photographs & Still Frames By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I am what I suppose you would classify as “slightly” obsessed with photography. Everywhere I travel, whether for the first time or the fiftieth, I am constantly on the lookout for interesting angles, landscapes, candid shots… anything that happens to catch my eye. There is something about preserving the moment that has always appealed to my sense of historical appreciation – because, after all, the second a moment has passed, it is, theoretically, history. This is not to say that every one of the thousands of photos in my digital archive would necessarily qualify as “art” or even as particularly significant to anyone but me. They are just part of the vast collection of snippets from my life, of those close to me, of the places I have been, the
events I have attended – all easily accessible whenever I, or anyone else, is in the mood for a little trip down memory lane. One would think, with such an interest in the art of photography, that I might invest in a “real” camera at some point, rather than relying solely on the somewhat questionable quality of my digital smartphone, portable and convenient as it is. And while, yes, an assortment of lenses and tools would certainly improve the technical quality, there is definitely something to be said for being able to instantly capture the scene before you. With the recent influx of social media outlets such as Facebook and Instagram, there seems to be a newfound obsession with instantly sharing every photo taken, especially among those of the younger generation. While I can appreciate a good photo as much as the next person, there is
such a thing as overkill. Case in point: I recently traveled to Ireland over the summer on what was my first “real” trip – on a plane, overseas, to a land full of countless photo ops. I took what amounted (after many retakes and deletions) to about 800 photos over the course of eight days. Had I taken a cue from the masses out on Facebook, all 800 of those pictures would have been instantly uploaded the second my feet touched American soil. Instead, I managed to narrow it down to maybe a dozen of my favorites. I’m sure all my social media “friends” and “followers” thank me for that. Photography will always be something of a passion for me. And why not? Someday, all those seemingly meaningless photos will be quite significant. Better to capture those moments now.

Historically viewed as an adult-onset disease and difficult to diagnose in children, MS is now understood by scientists to be a pediatric disease as well. Distinguished Citizens The Boy Scouts of America, Suffolk County Council is proud to announce the recipients of the 2013 Distinguished Citizen Award. The Distinguished Citizens Award recognizes noteworthy and extraordinary leadership of citizens in our communities. Since 1965, the Suffolk County
Council has honored a list of truly outstanding Long Islanders, such as Ward Melville, Robert Moses, H. Lee Dennison, and Dr. Shirley Strumm Kenny. This year’s honorees are Cathleen Hansen (East Setauket), David Hunt (Fort Salonga) and Floyd Sarisohn (Commack). All three know the value of Scouting first hand.
Two of Cathleen’s sons have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Floyd Sarisohn, Senior Partner in the law firms of both Sarisohn Law Partners LLP and Sarisohn, Carner LeBow and DeVita, is an Eagle Scout and has been a member of the Order of the Arrow since 1942. David Hunt, President of Hunt Corporate Services,
Inc., is an Eagle Scout and is currently an Eagle Scout Counselor. For over a century the Boy Scouts of America has been the nation’s foremost youth program of character development and values based leadership training. This “youth” program has long-lasting benefits, to members once they

Students at Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District ignited their love of reading with a special reading pep rally in midOctober. During the event, author/illustrator Joe Shandrowski spoke with students and encouraged them to always use their imagination. “You must
have a big imagination to be a writer or illustrator,” Mr. Shandrowski said. “Every day, you should read in order to make your imagination bigger and stronger.” He then shared one of his books, “Huga Tuga and the Seashell Mystery” with students. During the story, the children followed the tale of friendly sea monster
Huga Tuga who guides his friend Sarah on a journey into the sea to find out where seashells come from. Harley students listened intently and helped Mr. Shandrowski act out portions of the book, all while stretching their imaginations and strengthening their love of reading.

Assisting Small Business times. Last year, over 1 million people around the world were involved with Small Business Saturday, a day that recognizes the importance of small businesses in the overall economy and to local communities. The Councilman is working with all local businesses to make this year’s Small Business Saturday a financial success. He is currently reaching out to small businesses in Centerport, Cold Spring Harbor, Commack, East Northport, Greenlawn, Halesite, Huntington Village, Huntington Station, Northport, East Northport and Melville to create a list
of all local businesses. He is also asking owner’s if they would like to participate and how they would like to promote themselves. The town recently updated their webpage and Councilman Mayoka has taken advantage of this by compiling a list of many small businesses throughout the Town of Huntington. Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce will honor Robert M. Scheiner as the 2013 recipient of The John Klaber Memorial Award. Mr. Scheiner is the Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for H2M Architects & Engineers in Melville. The award recognizes a record of service and devotion to the community. Mr. Scheiner, a Commack resident, joined H2M in 1986 with a primary role of starting an architectural division for the firm. That group now exceeds 50 employees. Previously he was Director of Community Development & Planning for the Town of Riverhead where, after nine years he was appointed Deputy Supervisor with responsibilities for all construction, and oversight of the Building and Recreation departments and the water and sewer Districts. Mr. Scheiner has served his community in diverse ways and in many leadership roles. He is Vice Chairman of the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce and serves on its Executive, Government Relations, Green/Sustainable, and Huntington Village Parking Improvements committees. A former Chair of the Leadership
Huntington Foundation and currently a member of its President’s Advisory Committee, he is also a board member of Vision Long Island and the Community Development Corp. of Long Island. A former chair for that organization, he currently serves on its Corporate Advisory Committee. A former Rotarian in both Riverhead and Huntington Station, he was presented by the Huntington Station Rotary with the Paul Harris Fellowship. He is an active member of several business organizations, including Hauppauge Industrial Association, Long Island Association and Action Long Island. Closer to home, he served as President of the Hamlet Home Owner’s Association from 1993 to 2009. The John Klaber Memorial Award is awarded by the Huntington Chamber in recognition of an individual’s devotion to the community. It is given to a citizen, at least 60 years of age, who has a record of distinguished and exceptional voluntary service to the community for 15 years or more and has held key leadership positions with diversified town-wide organizations. A well known local architect, Mr. Klaber came to Huntington in 1945 when he was 67 years-old. During his 26 years as a Town resident, he sought to improve the quality of life and preserve the beauty and charm of the place he had come to call home. He was involved in countless community activities, serving as vice president of the Old Village Green Association and vice president of the local chapter of the NAACP. He was a member of the
Huntington Historical Society, Historical Sites Preservation Committee, Huntington Lions Club and the American Legion. Mr. Klaber was active in the community until his death in 1971, at the age of 87. At that time he was serving on the Chamber’s Planning and Zoning, Human Resources, and Town and County Affairs Committees. The Klaber Award was established by the Chamber on 1973 to recognize those who exemplify Mr. Klaber’s community involvement. Previous recipients include: Clayton F. Mugridge (1973), Bryon Sammis (1974), John Ficker (1975), Richard E. Allen (1976), Hon. Fred Munder (1977), Jack Lee (1979), Jane M. Sullivan (1981), Robert Mitchell (1984), Ruth F. Concoran (1986), John Jazombek (1988), John Staib (1989), Quentin Sammis (1991), Anthony Mastroianni (1992), Walter Spilsbury (1997), Arthur Goldstein (1998), Vaughan Spilsbury (1999), Mary C. Cary (2000), Libby Hubbard (2001), Clifford Starkins & Joy Squires (2002), Duncan Elder (2003), Kenneth Christensen & Eleanor Casey (2004) and Delores “Dee” Thompson (2010). The award is not given every year and has not been awarded since 2010. The Klaber Award will be presented at a reception to be held Wednesday, November 13th, at the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum. At that time John Klaber’s scrapbook will be presented to the Town of Huntington for preservation in its archives.

Huntington Supervisor Petrone was joined by colleagues on the Town Council and members of the Town’s Hispanic Task Force in honoring 13 outstanding high school students as part of the 19th Annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration Program held at Town Hall on Friday, October 18th. The Town and the Task Force presented Student Achievement Awards to Juliana Bedoya, a Harborfields High School junior; Paola Cespedes, Walt Whitman High School junior; Nicholas DelGuadio, a Northport High School senior; Andrew Gonzalez, a Walt Whitman High School senior; Matias Lacroze, a Cold Spring Harbor High School junior; Sebastian Morales, a John Glenn High School senior; Jason Moreira, a Huntington High School junior; Daniela Ramos, a John Glenn High School junior; Nina Riffaud, a Cold Spring Harbor High School senior; Tracey Rosenlicht, a Commack High School

The community service award was presented to Juan Leon, an Afghanistan War Veteran who serves as Rep. Steve Israel’s liaison between the federal government and veterans on Long Island. Mr. Leon, who is of Dominican and Colombian heritage, joined the New York Army National Guard in 2003 at the age of 19, following the footsteps of his parents, both of whom served in the U.S. military. He was called to active duty in 2008, while he was pursuing his studies at Farmingdale State University, and spent 2008 and 2009 in Kabul, where he was awarded the combat infantryman’s badge for his direct involvement in ground combat. Upon his return, Mr. Leon completed his studies at Farmingdale and began working for Rep. Israel. He is married and

Dr. Genao, who is of Dominican heritage, spoke about her life, and how she went from growing up in a lowincome neighborhood in Manhattan, where obtaining a college degree was a rarity, to her current position as an assistant professor in Queens College’s Educational Leadership Program. Dr. Genao holds a bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University, a master’s degree in urban affairs from Hunter College and a doctorate in public administration from Rutgers University. Among her accomplishments is developing a plan for the Newark Public Schools’ Office of Alternative Education to boost academic opportunities for at-risk youth. Musical selections were performed by the Huntington High School Chamber choir, the Huntington High School String Quartet and the Orlando Marin Orchestra.

Yesterday, Legislator John “Bulldog” Kennedy, Minority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature, honored “RSVP” or the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, who have been serving the needs of Suffolk County residents for over 41 years. RSVP has over 900 senior volunteers whom are committed to community service and has provided aid to those in need. On this day honoring RSVP and its senior volunteers, certain
volunteers received special recognition for their efforts. Fred Louka, Christian Specht and Mike Trotta received the Spirit of Service Award for their work in the year following Super Storm Sandy. Fred Loucka, who has been volunteering since 1999, has given time at the VA Hospital in Northport, but went the extra yard by reaching out to those hit hard and in Red Cross shelters due to Sandy. Christian, a volunteer since 2002, a former
aviation electrician, has helped maintain the Fire Island Lighthouse. Mike Trotta, has volunteered over 3,000 hours for the Fire Island National Seashore, was an indispensible presence at the National Seashore. Legislator Kennedy would like to thank all those who helped in making this event the wonderful celebration it was. “RSVP is a wonderful grass roots community based volunteer operation helping all aspects of our society from children to seniors. Their volunteers have tons of experience in a multitude of areas and we are lucky to have them as part of our community,” said Legislator Kennedy.
