Several PSEG Long Island facilities will be utilized to assist Island Harvest with upcoming donation drop-off days. The community is invited to safely donate nonperishable food and essential items to support neighbors facing financial issues and food insecurity. Collection bins will be set up outside five PSEG Long Island offices across Long Island, including: • Melville - 15 Park Dr. Thursday, Oct. 29 • Patchogue - 460 E Main St. - Thursday, Nov. 5 • Seaford - 3524 Merrick Rd. - Tuesday, Nov. 10 • Hewlett - 455 Mill Rd. Thursday, Nov. 12 At all locations, donations will be accepted from 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. and PSEG Long Island employees will be available to help coordinate the drop-offs while following contactless and physical distancing safety guidelines. Northport High School senior Camden Burk has lots to be proud of this year. From being honored as a National Merit Semifinalist earlier this school year to being named the Math Rotary Student of the Month, Camden has been a star student. During the Oct. 15 Board of Education meeting, held via Zoom, the district and board honored Camden and congratulated him on his hard work. Camden’s history of excelling in math began in middle school, when he
entered the school’s double accelerated program and received a third-place score in eighth grade in the American Math Contest. He went on to complete all three Regents exams with an average score of 95 by the time he finished his freshman year at Northport High School. Camden has twice earned silver medals at the Long Island Math Fair for his research on math and climate change and has been on the mathletes team every year since his middle school days.
As recipient of Rotary Student of the Month, Camden and his family were able to attend the Rotary luncheon. While he is still determining his next steps, Camden hopes to join the conservation field and major in environmental or geological science. “Camden is brilliant and confident, yet he is quite humble and affable,” shared Chairperson of Mathematics Robin Rann, who awarded Camden with the recognition. “We are very happy that he is receiving this recognition.”

How To Prepare For A Unique Election Day
Like many days that came before it in 2020, Election Day figures to be unique this year. The global COVID-19 pandemic has changed many aspects of life as people know it, and it figures to change how they vote this fall as well. The right to vote and participate in a representative government should never be taken for granted. Many people across the globe have no such right, so citizens of the United States should be grateful they can vote and express that gratitude by doing their part and voting each year on Election Day. State and local governments may be approaching Election Day differently as they try to juggle their responsibilities to make voting accessible to all while simultaneously keeping voters safe during the pandemic. Voters can do their part by taking the following steps prior to Election Day, which is November 3, 2020. • Confirm you are registered to vote. Voter registration deadlines
differ by state. According to Vote.org, some states, including Colorado and Connecticut, allow eligible voters to register on Election Day and cast their ballots that very same day, but many states, such as Alaska, Hawaii and Louisiana, require voters to be registered 30 days prior to Election Day. A list of state-by-state voter registration requirements can be found at www.vote. org/voter-registrationdeadlines/. • Learn the mail-in ballot policy in your state. Many voters may not vote via mail-in ballots on a typical Election Day, but 2020 is not a typical year. The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. notes that all states offer some form of mailin ballots. Many states are asking voters to vote via mail-in ballots in 2020 in an effort to reduce voters’ risk of getting and spreading the COVID-19 virus. Confirm the mail-in ballot policy and procedure in your state as early as possible to make sure your vote is counted.
• Return your completed mail-in ballot as soon as possible. Many states are urging voters who plan to vote using mail-in ballots to return their ballots as early as possible. In a mailer sent to all registered voters, the Superintendent of Elections and the Board of Elections in New Jersey noted it is critical that voters return their mailin ballots early in the upcoming election season. Mail-in ballots can be returned via the United States Postal Service (all ballots include postage paid return envelopes), and voters also may be able to return their ballots in person at their designated polling locations or by placing the ballots in secure ballot drop boxes. Confirm your mail-in ballot return options with your local County Clerk of Elections well before Election Day. Election Day 2020 will be unique. Voters should not hesitate to take all necessary steps in advance of November 3 to ensure their votes are counted this fall.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued new guidelines on how to celebrate Halloween safely. The agency grouped Halloween activities into low, moderate and high-risk buckets with traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating making the top of the higher-risk activities for spreading COVID-19. The guidelines come one week after Governor Andrew Cuomo said he wouldn’t formally
ban trick-or-treating this year, but said he won’t necessarily encourage parents to take kids doorto-door either. For those who do plan to head out this October, Sharon Nachman, MD, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital has some tips for families on how to safely trick-or-treat on Halloween during the pandemic.
1. Staying 6 feet away while walking and going from home to home. 2. Go trick-or-treating in small groups. 3. Parents and kids should always wear their masks while walking in the neighborhood, as well as when you open the door to hand out candy. 4. Not allowing (older) kids to go out unsupervised. 5. Consider organizing your route. Talk to friends and neighbors and have a
preset signal. For example, outside lights means kids know this is a home you can stop at for trick-ortreating. 6. Only wrapped candies or treats. 7. Some families may elect to leave a few treats on their outside stoop of their home. If that is the case, then remind kids to only take one! 8. No parties! 9. You can leave a bucket or wear a mask and use
hand sanitizer when handing out treats. No crowding at the door is important. 10. Pre-organize the route. “Parents can work to make trick-or-treating safe. It will take some extra preparation and thinking,” said Dr. Nachman. “Kids can have a good time. It will just look different from past years but that’s fine.”

Following the settlement of the district’s outstanding LIPA litigation, Moody’s Investment Service has upgraded the NorthportEast Northport School District’s rating to an Aa1. According to the Moody’s press release, the upgrade “reflects a suitable and stable financial position, modest long-term liability profile and sizeable tax
base, that will see some near-term decline.” Despite external factors that often inhibit such an upgrade such as the coronavirus pandemic, the district’s strong decision making, push to settle the LIPA settlement, and resolution of environmental concerns at a district building have proven to be for the benefit,
per Moody’s analysis and upgraded rating. “The district is pleased to hear of the improved score and feels it is reflective of the our actions to provide financial stability to the school community,” said Robert Banzer, superintendent of schools. The LIPA suit settlement, agreed upon by the Town of Huntington Board in
September 2020, will result in a reduction of LIPA’s tax payments to the District from $86 million to $46 million over the next seven years. This settlement will result in an increase in property tax payments for community home and business owners; however the district is exploring ways to mitigate this increase. a
