Members of the public and the Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC) walked the Sunken Meadow State Park boardwalk on Thursday, October 6th to raise awareness about the importance of physical activity in maintaining physical and mental health. The walk coincided with Mental Health Awareness Week. With the regional theme of being able to “Shine a Light” on mental health/substance abuse treatment and prevention, the LIHC called the event the Light the Path Walk. There is compelling research that physical activity improves mood and it has been shown to decrease symptoms of depression and anxiety. “We know that one in every five individuals will experience a mental health issue during their lifetimes,” said Janine Logan, Director of the Long Island Health Collaborative. “The simple act of walking is one way to manage stress, while losing weight and getting in shape at the same time.”

Distinguished Honor Four students from Elwood-John H. Glenn High School in the Elwood Union Free School District have earned the title of Commended Student in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. Justin Yoskowitz, Kristopher Kwan, Katherine McPherson and Derek Lee have been placed among the top five percent of more than 1.6 million students who entered the competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last October. The students are four of 34,000 Commended Students being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Upon hearing the news, Principal Carisa Burzynski brought the students down to her office to congratulate them. “I was a bit shocked,” Lee said. “Once I heard that David and Michael Hermanns qualified as Semifinalists in the competition, I thought I didn’t place at any level.” “It was great finding out,” McPherson added. “I was so excited to tell my dad the news.”

The Elwood Union Free School District gathered on the Elwood-John H. Glenn High School varsity soccer field on October 14th for a special scoreboard dedication ceremony in remembrance of student Sean Urda. Sean passed away in January 2015 in a snow tubing accident; a tragedy that deeply impacted the Elwood community. The Urda family donated a new soccer scoreboard in Sean’s name to give back to the school for their support and honor their son’s life as a passionate soccer player and Elwood Knight. The ceremony date provided a significant meaning, as number 14 was Sean’s soccer number.

Giving Attention Administrators in the Northport-East Northport School District gathered for a meeting with Superintendent of Schools Robert Banzer on October 13th where they surprised him with matching “Give Attention” t-shirts. The two words are significant for the district as Banzer stated them in his opening day speech in front of all of the district employees. Instead of using the term “pay” which is often obligatory, “give” is to doing something at your own will and is more genuine. The word

“attention” was inspired by a poem written by Marge Piercy titled “The Art of Blessing the Day.” According to Banzer, the most significant line reads “Attention is love, what we must give children, mothers, fathers, pets, our friends, the news, the woes of others…” During his opening day speech, Banzer used the slogan to stress the importance of making connections with students, families and staff and cultivating trusting relationships throughout the school

year. Chairperson of Special Education Karrie Kruger was so impacted by the caring nature of the slogan for all the members of our school community, she decided to create the shirts and surprise Banzer as a way to celebrate his leadership. “I was blown away,” said Banzer. “I’m so fortunate to work with such a talented and dedicated team of administrators who are committed to supporting our faculty and staff in helping meet the needs of our students and set them up for success.”

The Melville Fire Department recently dedicated a new heavy rescue truck and ambulance at a wet down ceremony held a fire headquarters. Dix Hills, Huntington Manor and Wyandanch FD’s helped Melville christen the new rigs, and got a tour of the new apparatus. their time and effort in approving, developing and building these two emergency vehicles which will serve the residents of Melville for many years. Holiday Parade & Tree Lighting An updated interactive map, a new Holiday Parade Facebook page, an expanded gingerbread house competition, and a scavenger hunt are among the additions to the festivities for the 7th annual Holiday Parade and Street Festival in Huntington Village November 26th. The days’ worth of entertainment and activities starts with Small Business Saturday, continues with Long Island’s Largest Electric Light Parade and features Santa’s arrival at the end of the parade. The interactive map, which people can access online through their smart phones and tablets, will provide information about participating merchants and any offers they might have related to Small Business Saturday or the Holiday Parade. Last year, 25 merchants signed up to be a part of the map and offer deals for the Holiday Season. Any merchant wishing to participate this year can download an application on the Town’s website or on the new, soon to go live, Huntington Holiday Facebook page. The map site received a total of 2,789 “hits” last year, including 1,239 on the day of the parade and festival. The new dedicated Facebook page will help the Festival expand its social media presence and give those who are coming to the parade a new avenue to obtain information. A coupon sheet will be on the page, with deals from around the village for people to print out before the parade and festival; as well as any applications will be up there as pictures for people to download. Bakeries throughout the town will be invited to take part in the 2nd annual Gingerbread House competition. Last year, five bakeries participated; the entries were displayed in a store window on Wall Street for a public vote. With more than 400 ballots cast, Greenlawn’s Fanny Cakes was declared the winner. After the festival,

all of the entries were displayed in the lobby of Town Hall through December and January. The display was a popular attraction for Town Hall visitors. The bakery competition was so popular that this year, there will be a second category, for home bakers. The finalists in both categories will be displayed in storefronts on New York Avenue, again for a public vote on the 26th and the finalists in both categories will be placed on display in the Town Hall lobby. Applications for both categories can be downloaded from the website or the Facebook page. “Each year, new events and features get added to make the day even more special, and this year is no exception, with the expanded gingerbread house competition and additional activities for children,” Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said. “That’s why people from all across Long Island come early and stay late for an entire day of family fun.” The parade, which draws between 5,000 and 10,000 people to the Village, will kick off at 6 p.m. from the Big H Shopping Center on New York Avenue and will proceed north to Main Street and then west on Main Street to West Neck Road. The parade will include competitions for the best floats in several categories, with judging based on how well they follow the theme of the parade, “Cartoon Holiday.” The friendly competition among fire departments is particularly fierce, because the winning department gets to choose who gets to play Santa Claus in the 2017 parade. Businesses and organizations are also encouraged to participate. By popular demand, The North Shore Pops, which calls itself Long Island’s favorite concert band, will again

perform immediately after the parade, playing in front of the holiday tree, which has become a popular picture and gathering spot throughout the holiday season. The Pops’ performance will be one of many throughout the day, with carolers strolling through the village. There also will be musical performances on and in front of the reviewing stand before the parade. After the tree lighting ceremony, the festival will continue on Wall Street. A DJ will take over to maintain the festive mood, as children pay a visit to Santa Claus, get their faces painted, play in the bounce houses, or enjoy a free cup of hot chocolate, compliments of Christopher’s Restaurant, Almarco and Huntington Panini. There will also be holiday crafts and activities at both the Huntington Public Library and Panera Bread, starting at noon. Councilwoman Susan A. Berland and the Huntington Youth Council (HYC) hosted their annual fall Sports Swap at the Dix Hills Ice Rink on Saturday, October 15th and it was a great success! Hundreds of young athletes and their families brought their

gently used hockey, figure skating, baseball, lacrosse and soccer equipment to the official drop-off box at the Dix Hills Ice Rink from October 1st to October 14th, to receive a voucher. On October 15th, they brought their voucher back to the Ice Rink to shop, swap and socialize.

Those unable to donate equipment were still able to shop by donating $5.00 for each item purchased. Hundreds of dollars were raised and all proceeds will be donated to four different Town of Huntington charities to be chosen by the HYC. “Once again the Sports Swap was a huge success,”

said Councilwoman Susan A. Berland. “For many families, shopping for sports equipment can be very expensive. It’s a win-win if we can save families some money, provide this ‘swap’ opportunity and also raise money for charity.”

Character Education Teachers, administrators and students at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District recently held an assembly to kick off their schoolwide Character Education Program. The program was initiated last year by Principal Marguerite Greene and Assistant Principal Mary Williams to foster a school-wide environment of respect, responsibility and compassion through awareness of individual actions, thoughts and behaviors. The physical education department led the event

and presented a video that they produced for the students. The video provided examples of individuals reflecting good character and even included current TJL students. “We wanted something different for the kick off assembly,” said physical education teacher Christine Collins. “The students and staff really took the video to heart because it not only had catchy songs, inspirational words and video clips, but it also had current students from our building acting out the character words.” The kick off assembly is just the start for the

program. Each month will be designated a character trait and have a corresponding color. Students will be encouraged to wear that color shirt to school to show awareness of that month’s trait and teachers will incorporate the trait into lessons and discussions. At the end of each month, two students from every classroom will receive a Character Education Award for exemplifying the character trait throughout the month and their photos will appear on the “Treemendous Character” tree at the school.

Tech Creations Elwood Middle School students in Mr. Matthew McGuire’s technology class recently participated in an engaging lesson about energy sources and created their own wind turbines. The project was made possible due to an Elwood Education Endowment grant that the technology department received last year. The seventh-grade students formed groups and researched wind turbines before designing their own KidWind wind turbine blades. They then constructed, tested, evaluated and redesigned blades that they believed would generate the most

electrical power. The class tested their designs with Vernier power sensors that connected with their Chromebooks. The Vernier power equipment allowed the students to get instantaneous results about the designs that they created. Each group then picked a variable with their design; the number of blades, angle of blades, material and more. They recorded and graphed their results and presented their findings to the rest of the class. The class discussion allowed for students to redesign their wind turbines to become more efficient based on their classmates’ data.

This lesson is one of many in the Technology Education curriculum at the middle school. The next project that the students will take on allows them to become automotive designers and create a solar powered car. The goal of the class is for students to learn 21st century skills of problem solving, critical thinking and design. “We hope for students to become more technically literate and have a better understanding of how and why technology is not just what it is,” said technology and engineering teacher Mr. McGuire.

The panel includes: Assistant Professor Richard Amster from the Suffolk County Community College Culinary Institute; Chef Franco Sampogna from Jema Restaurant; Executive Chef Alexander Chernikov from IMC Restaurant & Bar; pastry chef Joe Baldanza, one of the owners Mr. Sausage; and Northport teenager William Connor, who will be featured this month on Food Network’s “Chopped Junior.” After the parade and festival, the finalist entries will be moved to Town Hall, where they will be put on display through January, providing significant exposure not only for the winner but to all of finalists. Last year, thousands of visitors marveled at the six bakery entries as they passed through the Town Hall lobby.

Golf Classic a Success Bright sunshine matched the spirit and generosity of golf enthusiasts and sponsors, enabling the Friends of Mercy Medical Center to raise $125,000 at their 35th annual Golf Classic. The September 15th event included a morning and afternoon shotgun, with 250 golfers coming together at the Garden City Country Club and Hempstead Golf and Country Club to support the Rockville Centre hospital. Due to the initial successful response, the first course was completely

reserved within just nine days, and so the second course was added. Many thanks to all who participated! The post-outing dinner honored William Armstrong, CPA, senior vice president of finance for Catholic Health Services, and the presenting sponsors were Sentosa Care LLC and Medtronic. This morning, I was hoping to see the sunrise. Not because I have never had the privilege of experiencing one, but because I thought it would be a fitting way to mark what would have been my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, an occasion we, as a family, are forced to bittersweetly celebrate in his absence. Somehow, I thought the golden rays welcoming a brand new day might make the sadness simply melt away. Unfortunately, when I awoke, it was not to the promising haze of dawn, but to an overcast sky brimming with rain clouds, seemingly ready to shower the land at any given moment. I suppose that was fitting in its own way. Realistically, the prospect

of “celebrating” any occasion following the passing of someone special is a fairly impossible task. Absent is the guest of honor, replaced by memories of days gone by and happier times. They say these things grow easier with time, but I’m not sure that is truly the case. Perhaps we just learn to adapt and deal with them differently... but the pain remains all the same. First holidays, especially, seem to take the biggest emotional toll on those loved ones left behind, as they attempt to pick up the pieces and carry on as usual. The problem is, there is no “norm,” so to speak. Traditions seem empty, and those things that once brought us joy are tinged with melancholy. Life goes on, of course, and happiness is found in

other outlets as new customs are established and flourish over time. The memories we treasure become the backbone, the foundation, of our existence, as we build upon them and incorporate new generations and settings. It can be a painful process, to be sure, but those memories, and the prospect of making new ones, provide the motivation to forge ahead. And so, on this, my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, I remember the loving man at the center of so many of my happiest memories. I find solace in knowing that he is always with me, in one form or another, along with all of my loved ones who have passed on through the years. And I take comfort in the fact that so many special people have touched my life.

The Town of Huntington held a ceremony October 15th to officially name the turf field at Manor Field Park after Emerson Boozer, the former New York Jets star running back who went on to spend almost 20 years as the Town’s parks and recreation director and who continues to serve as a member of the Town’s open space committee. “In the Town, he was truly loved, and he did many more things than being parks director,” Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said in his remarks at the ceremony. “He was there for every kid who came forward, because he really believed in kids. He believed in what images are important for our young people. And the parks department through his leadership became an image for our youth. It became a place where opportunity can happen.” Councilman Mark Cuthbertson, who led the effort to rename the field, said in his remarks, “How proud we were to have him as our parks director for all those years. We have a cutting edge parks program due in no small part to the efforts of Emerson.” Added Councilwoman Susan A. Berland, “The thing I love the most about Emerson is his smile. He always has a smile for everyone, he makes you feel like you’re the only person in the room, and that smile brings such happiness to you. There is nobody I can think of in the Town of Huntington more deserving of this honor.” Councilwoman Tracey A. Edwards said, “This is a wonderful day for us because not only is Emerson Boozer a legacy in the Town of Huntington and because he is the ultimate Jet, but because you can still walk up to him in any place within the town of Huntington and he is still

After retiring from football, Boozer went into broadcasting, invested in a tool-and-dye machine shop, and owned a bar, Em Boozer’s Pub 32 (after his uniform number) in the building that is now the Town’s Business Incubator on New York Avenue in Huntington Station. In 1986, he took a job as deputy parks and recreation director with the Town as was appointed director a year later. He served as executive assistant to the Supervisor in 1998 and returned to the post as parks director in January 2001. He retired in 2005. In 2010, he was appointed to the Town’s Environmental Open Space and Parks Improvement (EOSPA) Committee. He still serves on that committee. In his remarks, Boozer noted that Manor Field Park had particular significance to him. “It is not Shea Stadium, Giants Stadium or Yankee Stadium, it is Manor Park – a great location, one that I have known for quite a long time. I have also trained here myself when I was playing ball. I would come and jog the perimeter…Manor Park has always been the first park that I would look to attend because I felt at home in Manor Park,” he said. “It is a place that is dear to me and to many youngsters who come and play the various sports here.”

The American Heart Association’s 8th annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk will be held on Sunday, November 20th, on the property of the beautiful Pugliese Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Cutchogue. Hundreds of runners are expected on this new course through the Vineyard. Day of event registration begins at 8:00 a.m., with the fun run for children 10 and under beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the 3.1 mile off road race beginning at 10:15 a.m. Following the race, the awards ceremony will take place at 11:15 a.m. with awards being given to the top male and female runners along with the top runners in various age categories. A health expo will also be available during the event open to all participants. The Healing Heart 5K hopes to raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of men and women across the country and here on Long Island. The event creates a culture of health and physical activity, giving families the opportunity to participate in heart healthy activities together.
