Lauren LaMena Named A National Merit Semifinalist Elwood-John H. Glenn recently named a National Scholarship Program. She performances on the High School senior Merit Semifinalist in was recognized for their 2022 Preliminary SAT/ Lauren LaMena was the 2024 National Merit exceptional academic National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test during the last school year. Now in its 69th year, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation annually announces the names of approximately 16,000 semifinalists who go on to compete for 7,140 scholarships, totaling

nearly $28 million. “Lauren is an outstanding leader and role model both in the classroom and on the athletic field,” Principal Corey McNamara said. “It is always great to see our students get the welldeserved recognition that they have worked so hard for while here at John Glenn. Congratulations to Lauren and her family.”

“I’m really honored to be recognized as a Semifinalist, but I would also like to acknowledge that none of this would be possible without all of the support I have received over the years from my school, my teachers and my family,” LaMena said. “I am also really excited about all of the opportunities this could bring.”

That’s why in 2020, to mark Gabriel’s 10th anniversary in heaven, she formed Gabriel’s Giving Tree (GGT) to help families in need on Long Island pay for funeral and burial services after a loved one dies from an opioid poisoning or substance use disorder. In 2021, GGT joined forces with the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD), together they have raised more than $100,000, assisting nearly 30 families to provide their loved ones one final gift. Says Phillippe, “I know from experience that many families may not have these funds, especially

after using much of their resources to help their loved one with treatment costs, in hopes of helping them become healthy and free from addiction. The grants provided by GGT only cover a portion of the expenses. Fortunately, several Long Island funeral homes, including Fives Funeral Homes in Smithtown and Patchogue work with the organization to help families struggling to pay for funeral costs stay within a budget.” On October 29, 2023, GGT and LICADD will be hosting its annual fundraiser, “The Peter Sweisgood and Gabriel’s Giving Tree Healing and Recovery Breakfast” in memory of former LICADD Executive Director, Peter Sweisgood. The breakfast will honor Richard Buckman, Founder of the Long Island Recovery Association and Ed Olsen

(posthumously) for their contributions to the field of recovery. The Breakfast is an opportunity for families to share their experience in grief and healing during a casual, come as you are event. To be as inclusive as possible, tickets are priced at $55. The Breakfast will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Heritage Club at Bethpage.
