During the first month of the 2017-2018 school year, students at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary in the Harborfields Central School District worked on an art project celebrating individuality, based on the book Only One You by Linda Kranz. During art class, teachers went through the story page by page, applying the lessons to students’ everyday lives — covering topics such as being different
from everyone else, or how to handle adversity. Each student painted a rock as a reflection of themselves and their uniqueness and placed them in front of the school, creating a “Stream of Inspiration.” Students from Ms. Weber’s fifth-grade class were eager to show off their individuality. When asked what they liked most about themselves, or what made them one-of-a-kind, students beamed with
pride while answering. “I like that I’m dependable, especially for my friends and family,” fifth grader Lance said, while another student, Lea, commented, “I’m always honest…no matter what.” This positive self-view was a goal of the project itself — building a healthy confidence in children who will one day make the world a better place.

The Northport-East Northport School District held a day of homecoming festivities full of district pride at the high school on October 14th. Students, faculty, and members of the community all came together at the football game against the Sachem North Flaming Arrows. The Tiger Stadium stands were packed with more than 2,000 students, families, and faculty many clad in district colors, chanting along with the cheerleaders as they watched the team take the lead within the first few minutes. their seats in a tent at the end of the field. The halftime show featured the Northport Tiger Marching Band, whose 60th anniversary is this year, as well as the Tigerettes and the Flagline. They performed a medley of songs, including “Happy Together” and “Play That Funky Music” for the crowd, where many were dancing in their seats. The Northport Hall of Fame inductees were introduced to the community - one of whom was Richard Castellano, the first Northport coach to ever be inducted. Other Hall of Fame inductees included Frank Cavagnaro, Joseph Correia, Craig Dowd, Edward Ettinger,

The homecoming spirit of all in attendance helped propel the Tigers to a dominating win with a final score of 48-7.
Simulation Center Opens care environment. The center simulates real-world situations, using advanced simulation equipment. The participants learn proper interventions, refine interprofessional skills, and increase confidence in their abilities. “What’s different about this center is that this is an Interprofessional Simulation Center where our students work together to learn teamwork and be the best health care professions they can be,” Dr. Gropack said. “This Center provides a safe environment to create simulations so our students are ready for the real-world situations.” LIU Post’s Interprofessional Simulation Center is unique as it supports interdisciplinary and translational research, adding to the body of knowledge on simulation, practice, technology, quality, and safety in a realworld health care setting. It works with the medical imaging lab as well. “What makes this center unique is critical and will make our students better health care providers and that means a better patient outcome,” Dr. Knapp said. The Interprofessional
Simulation Center operates like a real hospital, including equipment, supplies, and eight mannequins that are controlled by faculty and act as simulated patients that model human behavior and respond to medical interventions such as CPR, medication, and treatment. Among the different scenarios the Center is able to replicate is a maternity ward with a mannequin that simulates a live birth, including a “sim baby” which responds to treatment. Students interact with the simulated experience as part of their classroom curricula, participating in roleplay scenarios in a teambased atmosphere. These exercises help students develop comfort in medical settings, in a safe clinical environment. “My undergraduate and graduate degrees from LIU Post prepared me for a vigorous career. I was blessed to have been able to come to this University,” Mack said, noting that this new Center will help prepare the next generation of great health care professionals.

On October 14th, the LIU Post College of Health Professionals and Nursing held a ribbon cutting and demonstration of the University’s new stateof-the-art health care simulation center. The event was held as part of LIU Post’s Homecoming weekend. Among the dignitaries at the event were LIU President Dr. Kimberly R. Cline, Winifred Mack, RN, an LIU Post alumnus (’B.S. 75, M.P.A. ’83) and Senior Vice President of Health System Operations for Northwell Health, Dr. Lori Knapp, Ph.D., Vice President for Academic Affairs, LIU Post, and Dr. Stacy Gropack, Ph.D., Dean of the LIU Post College of Health Professions and Nursing. The state-of-theart center called the Interprofessional Simulation Center - is a critical part of the University’s experiential approach to educating the next generation of health-care professionals. The Center promotes collaboration among future nurses and health professionals, preparing them for roles in an increasingly complex and interdisciplinary health

(SBPLI) are hard at work planning the first ever SBPLI Long Island Regional double header, the Half Hollow Hills High School FIRST® Robotics Competition team is ramping up for its Sixth Annual Half Hollow Hills (HHH) Invitational. the HHH Invitational is designed to showcase the benefits of robotics programs to students, schools, communities and local businesses. During the event, students and coaches from 24 Long Island school districts will participate in an enjoyable and engaging learning environment that enhances problem-solving skills, cooperation and teamwork. Participating teams will compete under the rules and guidelines of the 2017 FIRST Robotics Competition challenge, dubbed FIRST STEAMWORKS™. During the Invitational, which mimics the tournamentstyle competition of the SBPLI Long Island Regional, two 3-team alliances will take to the playing field to complete a variety of tasks to score points and win the
round, with the hopes of eventually advancing to eliminations and finals. Residents, teachers, administrators and business leaders from the surrounding areas are invited to attend and discover first-hand the benefits that FIRST Robotics programs provide to students. This event is also the perfect opportunity for schools and organizations interested in starting a team to meet with SBPLI leaders and speak with participants to gather more information. Long Island’s largest food drive event, the 9th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank, will take place on Friday, November 17th, from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Donations can be dropped off at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage. Long Islanders are asked to drop off frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items (except those in glass containers), supermarket gift cards, or cash donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest Food Bank, which will then help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than 300,000 food-insecure Long Islanders through its distribution network of over 550 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other feeding programs on Long Island. “Over the past month, we have seen the great generosity of Long Islanders as thousands helped support people in
need across our country and the Caribbean,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. “There are also many people right here on Long Island who need our help and we hope Long Islanders’ continued generosity to support one another, both near and far, will continue into the holiday season. My name is Jason Santana. I am the Production Manager here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers® and I want to share my health story with you. One year ago, I embarked on a journey that would change my life forever. I’ve learned how to take control of my health and how to make the right choices to support my goals. I am in the best shape of my life right now; I feel incredible and have abundant energy. I have a few more pounds to achieve my goal, and I know I can get to it. This is my current reality. I’ve struggled with
my weight for almost 20 years. I was very unhealthy one year ago. I had sleep apnea, I was in constant pain and was always fearful that I could suffer a heart attack at any moment. Mahoney and Andrea Vest determined that, controlling for demographic factors and baseline adjustment, extracurricular intensity was a significant predictor of positive outcomes and unrelated to indicators of problematic adjustment (e.g., psychological distress, substance use, antisocial behavior) at young adulthood. Even though extracurricular activities are largely positive - even when schedules are packed - parents need to be aware of the diminishing returns of too many activities. This
is something called the “threshold effect.” Benefits from extracurriculars can level off when too many activities are being juggled. If a child is experiencing anxiety, sleeplessness or depression, or seems overly stressed, it could be time to reduce students’ time spent doing structured activities. It’s essential that families use the cues given by kids to assess what students can handle. And children should be encouraged to be honest with their parents about their extracurricular activities as well.

Of Foliage and Fuzzy Friends as luck would have it, there happens to be one fairly large tree right in front of my apartment, with branches that - until recently - stretched nearly to my second-floor balcony. Every autumn, like clockwork, I would find hordes of acorns - piles, literally - on my deck each morning. Curious how they all happened to “fall” in this one area, I observed one particular squirrel as he made the rounds from branch to branch, fervently shaking each one until he had dislodged each and every nut. Some would fall down below, where he would eagerly gather them and begin digging holes to store them away; the rest, apparently, seemed to settle among my plants upstairs. Each day, I would sweep the acorns off the side of the deck and, peering over the railing, would see my little fuzzy visitor eagerly waiting to collect them. It became something of a routine, and I was only too happy to help him in his pursuit (and clear off my deck in the process). One morning, I awoke to the sound of buzzing and looked outside to see the landscape company trimming many of the trees and shrubs in the area, including “my” tree. Horrified, I looked at the now nearly-barren branches and wondered what had
become of my little fluffy-tailed companion. Was he swept away with the pile of discarded branches? Had he been permanently displaced from his chosen home? What had become of all the acorns he had yet to gather? Mildly concerned, I wondered if I would ever see him again. A few days passed, with still no sign. The next night, when I returned home from work, I decided to dine outside. It was one of those late Autumn evenings when the air was still mild and the sun had yet to set, casting a golden glow over all that the light touched. As I ate, I was startled by the sound of scurrying, and looked up to see my little fuzzy friend scampering up and down the emaciated tree, picking up the acorns that had fallen and galloping down the pathway to bury them in the tiny hole he had dug. I smiled, glad to see he was alright, despite his slightly-mangled home. Not quite a puppy, but a member of the adopted family nonetheless. A few weeks later, it seemed the acorns had all been accounted for. As I watered my mum plants, I saw something wedged between the flowers. Curious, I peered between the stems to find a single peanut shell. I guess this means he’s moving in for the winter.

with Jamie Lynn Ryan For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted a “furry” pet of some kind, be it a puppy, kitten, bunny, even a guinea pig. Of course, once I moved into my own apartment and realized that such fuzzy companions require far more attention than I, as a full-time member of the workforce, can provide, I settled for my beloved little Buddy the Betta - and, following his passing, my new baby Betta, Norton von Spudly. Not exactly furry, but still fairly entertaining and interactive as fish go. Perhaps I should mention that, in the apartment complex where I reside, one tends to come across all sorts of creatures, from stray cats and kittens wandering the property, to turtles and fish by the pond, robins and blue jays and other assorted winged folk, and even the occasional baby fox roaming near the dumpster. And squirrels. We can’t forget our bushy-tailed friends who spend the majority of the seasons scurrying from tree to tree in search of acorns to munch on and, once the weather begins to turn chilly, store away for winter. My particular building is fairly set apart from the trees and shrubbery which line some of the other, more shaded areas of the complex; however,
collecting data on the issue since 2007. In their report “Extracurricular Activity in High-Performing School Contexts: Stress Buster, Booster or Buffer?”, Jerusha Conner and Sarah Miles found that 87 percent of kids who would be considered to have packed schedules were perfectly happy unless they were doing more than four hours a day. The “over-scheduling hypothesis” may be overhyped. This is the concern that too much organized activity participation leads to poor developmental outcomes. This hypothesis also suggests that hectic schedules also undermine family functioning, detract from schoolwork and possibly increase the risk of copycat behaviors and excessive competitiveness. Many high schools, colleges and universities emphasize their goals of producing well-rounded students. Extracurricular activities teach students important life lessons, provide them opportunities to socialize and often stimulate their minds and bodies in ways that differ from the stimulation provided in the classroom. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau states that, in 2014, 57 percent of children between the ages of 6 and 17 participate in at least one after-school extracurricular activity. Children are more likely to participate in sports than clubs or lessons, such as music, dance and language, but each of these activities can be beneficial to students’ development. Students who participate in extracurricular activities may want to limit their participation to 20 hours per week. This is according to a group of professors from Stanford University and Villanova University who have been

driver in the house, it’s understandable if moms and dads are weary about inexperienced children behind the wheel. Such fears are not unfounded, as vehicular fatalities remain the leading cause of death for many teenagers. In the United States, teens are three times more likely to crash per mile driven than adults, according to data from Allstate. To help reduce the propensity for crashes, injury and death, families can work together to focus on safe driving
tips. Take a safe-driving course. Any licensed driver can benefit from a safedriving course. Check with the department of motor vehicles to find an approved list of driving courses available. In addition to providing valuable safety tips, enrollment in these courses may entitle people to discounts on auto insurance. Stay off of the phone. Texting and making phone calls reduces alertness on the road. That loss of focus, even if only for a
few seconds, can result in drivers driving the equivalent of an entire football field without having their eyes on the road. Avoid mobile devices while driving. Pull over to make a call if there is an emergency; otherwise, leave the phone out of reach in a backseat. Use the headlights. Many cars now feature daytime running lights. For those that don’t, engage the headlights when driving. Using headlights increases visibility and helps other drivers see approaching
