VOLUNTEERS COME TOGETHER TO RENOVATE FACILITY-The United Construction Industry of America (UCIAM), pulled together contractors and affiliated members with the help of BACA (Bikers Against Child Abuse) to renovate the Children’s Facility at VIBS Family violence and Rape Crisis Center in Islandia, where children who are victims of sexual abuse and who are witnesses to domestic violence receive counseling and support. PETER MAX: THE RETROSPECTIVE 1960-2019 - A Retrospective collection, with a significant nod to New York sports, music, the arts and the legacy of the Pop Art genre from the studio of artist legend, Peter Max, will be on exhibition and available for acquisition in a limited engagement presentation at Pop by LaMantia (90 Main St., Northport), Long Island’s premier pop art gallery. The exhibition opens with an evening preview event on Friday, October 25, from 7-9 pm, and previews begin Saturday, October 26. The Exhibition extends through Sunday, November 3, with two limited engagement, Gallery receptions for the public on Saturday, November 2 from 5 to 8 pm and Sunday, November 3 from 1 to 3 pm. Agape Community Church of Mastic Beach will be holding their Annual Thanksgiving Community Feast on Saturday, November 23rd from 1PM-4PM. There will be a home-cooked Thanksgiving dinner to sit and enjoy and guests will receive food to take home. The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. E v e r y bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The remaining events will run on October 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. This homegrown haunt has been up and running for a few weeks so far this year and visitors have only good things to say! Below are some recent reviews:
Halloween has become a hugely popular time for fun and festivities, but with it comes the potential for a variety of fire hazards. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) encourages everyone to take these simple precautions to stay safe without sacrificing that fun. “Halloween brings an opportunity to wear fun costumes, decorate our
homes, and eat too much candy,” says Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. “However, without proper safety precautions, we run the risk of turning good times into the wrong kind of scary ones.” According to NFPA research, between 2012 and 2016, decorations were the item first ignited in an estimated average of 800 reported home structure
fires per year, resulting in an average of two civilian deaths, 34 civilian injuries and $11 million in direct property damage. The decoration was too close to a heat source such as a candle or equipment in almost half of these fires. NFPA offers these tips to stay safe during the spooky season: Costumes: Avoid fabric that billows or trails behind you, as these can easily
ignite. If you are making your own costume, avoid loosely woven fabrics like linen and cotton, which can be very flammable. Decorations: Many common decorations like cornstalks, crepe paper, and dried flowers are very flammable. Keep these and similar decorations far away from any open flames or heat sources, like candles, heaters, and light bulbs.

Visibility: Give children flashlights or glowsticks for lighting, these can even be incorporated into the costume. If your child has a mask, ensure the eye holes are large enough for them to see clearly. Smoke Alarms: This is a great time to make sure your smoke alarms are functional and up-to-date. Exits: Exits are NOT an appropriate place for decorations. When decorating, ensure that nothing is blocking any escape routes.

Candles: Using candles as decoration can be risky if not done correctly. Keep them in a well- attended area out of the path of potential trick-or-treaters. The Northport-East Northport School District is proud to announce that another of its high school teachers has been accepted into the New York State Master Teacher program. Northport High School Science Teacher Karyn Libretto will join a network of more than 1200 teachers, including the district’s own Bryan Horan, Kristen Rozell and Marlene Yolango, to help strengthen the nation’s K-12 STEM education. Master teachers meet regularly to participate in leadership workshops and activities to help foster individual and collective professional growth in topics such as student research projects, expeditionary learning and Common Core. In her classroom, Ms. Libretto constantly integrates STEM disciplines into her lesson plans, instilling curiosity, creativity and eagerness in her students. “Ms. Libretto’s depth of knowledge offers her students every opportunity to develop a set of thinking, reasoning, teamwork, investigative, and creative skills that can be applied in all aspects of their education,” said David Storch, the district’s chairperson of Chairperson of Science, Technology & Engineering Education.

Student Of The Month Honored Northport High School’s Mathematics Student of the Month was recognized at the district’s board of education meeting on Oct. 3. Senior Danielle Levanti’s passion for math began in ninth grade when she joined the Institute of Creative Problem Solving and it only grew from there. In 10th grade, she joined the school’s Rotary Youth Leadership Association, where she has served as both a facilitator, and now, a senior leader. Upon entering 11th grade, Danielle soared to new heights when she became a member of the Institute of Merit, where she learned varying
strategies that, over the past two years, have helped her write numerous math research papers. She recently shared some of those techniques with several Northport High School teachers, marking the district’s first role reversal. For the past two years, Danielle has also been working as a researcher in the Block Allocation Group at Brookhaven National Lab. Over the years, she has collaborated alongside scientists, teachers and students to develop the National Synchrotron Light Source II – a particle accelerator that generates extremely bright
X-rays. The team used an Automated Macromolecular Crystallography beamline, specialized for investigating the structure and function of proteins in biomedical research, to refine the structure of TrmD, a protein related to Lyme disease. This finding has implications for drug discovery and has been submitted for publication in the Worldwide Protein Data Bank. After high school, Danielle plans to major in bio engineering at her first choice, Cornell University. “I feel like it’s the natural path for me,” she said.
