One Year Later By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Almost exactly one year ago, Long Islanders experienced what can only be described as the wrath of Mother Nature in the form of Hurricane Sandy. In the midst of power outages and damage assessment, we here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers managed to publish a newspaper, and I – displaced from my home on the south shore – attempted to compile a few thoughts in an effort to produce a column amid the chaos. Here are a few excerpts… We always think it’s not going to happen here. Whatever “it” is, we have grown so used to absently
observing most catastrophes from a distance, never foreseeing the day when they will wind up right in our own backyards. Literally. Some people lucked out. Others were not so fortunate, and will spend the next few weeks and months – years even – cleaning up all that was left behind, however little it may be. They say someone always has it worse off than you, and this is true. Except in this case, many of those most devastated happen to be our family members, friends and neighbors – the worst off of whom don’t even have a home to go back to. As with all events of this magnitude, peoples’ true colors tend to shine through, for better or worse. Here in the Long
Island/New York City area, we have witnessed a bit of both. But there are slivers of brightness struggling to shine through the chaos. Strangers banding together to organize food and clothing drives, businesses opening their doors to the public for heat, shelter, a place to charge cell phones and laptops and reconnect with the outside world… all signs that, amidst the mayhem, some basic humanity does exist. Let’s all hang in there. Together, we can – and will – get through this. And we have. Mostly. Some better than others. Still a long road to full recovery, but at least we have begun the journey.
As we head into the holiday season, it is crucial to realize just how caught up we can get in the trickor-treating, gift buying and pumpkin carving. Sure, these things are important, but the true measure of a successful holiday is the quality of the memories we create with our family. Some of my fondest memories took place around a Christmas Tree. Others derived from the carving of the turkey. More still were captured while dressed up in Halloween garb with my mom, dad and little brother. I vividly remember being carried in my father’s arms, dressed as a pumpkin, while my brother was in
his stroller, dressed as a pea! As Halloween is right around the corner, our minds shouldn’t be focused on getting to Christmas, but enjoying the ride. Each day is a blessing. Throughout my seventeen years on this Earth, I have learned many things. To me, the most important tidbit is that: “In today’s society, the family unit is broken up. When we’d sit down to dinner together as a family, we’d learn about each other. We had something people don’t get today.” This quote from Paul Prudhomme exemplifies what experts have been saying all along. The simplest social
group, the family, has been torn apart by modern happenings. In school, I take a class called Sociology, in which we learn that the most powerful group is a family. Weber, Marx and countless other sociologists have their own view on the family unit. All of them unanimously agree that, without those related to us by blood, we would be nothing. Keeping in contact with those we care about is especially crucial around the holidays. Throughout all of the gift-giving and traditions, find time to spend a moment with those you love, your family.

This year, Huntington resident and Marine Corps veteran Bill Ober was honored for his esteemed service to the local veteran community. Mr. Ober was named New York Marine of the Year by the National Commandant of the Marine Corps League, where he was elected to
serve as Commandant of Huntington Detachment 792 and has been a member since 2002. In addition, he served as the Detachment’s Chaplain, was named as their representative to the Town of Huntington Veterans Advisory Board, and was selected to be the keynote speaker at the
2012 Town of Huntington Veterans Day Ceremony. For all of his achievements and dedication to those who have valiantly served our country, Mr. Ober was presented with a proclamation on behalf of the Suffolk County Legislature.

McDonough of Massapequa Sara Michels of Levittown Kevin Wasko of Massapequa The National Merit Scholarship Program is a nationwide competition for recognition and awards conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Over 1.5 million students took the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last October. Of all test takers only 34,000 have been awarded the designation of Commended Student. In addition to these five students, Brandon Khoury of Bay Shore was named a 2013-2014 Scholar by the National Hispanic Recognition Program for Excellence in Academic Achievement. The National Hispanic Recognition Program is administered by the

Earning Recognition College Board and selected 5,300 Hispanic/ Latino students from a pool of over 259,000 based on a combination Preliminary SAT scores a grade point average. “The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation”. Mobile Science Classroom The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum will demonstrate a new mobile, scienceeducation outreach program, Traveling Classroom: Discovering The Universe, on Wednesday, October 30th, from 3 to 4 p.m. at Oldfield Middle School in Greenlawn. Vanderbilt science educators will show Science Club members and their advisor, Drew Lockwood, how to explore astronomy with the Classroom’s five, hands-on, interactive stations. The Traveling Classroom - housed in a 37-foot customized recreational vehicle - is a gift to the Vanderbilt Museum from the American Museum of Natural History, which also developed the curriculum for the successful astronomy and astrophysics program. The Traveling Classroom is supported by a grant from the National Grid Foundation. Speakers will include Lance Reinheimer, executive director of the Vanderbilt Museum; Bob Keller, president of the National Grid Foundation; Suffolk County Legislators William “Doc” Spencer; Lou D’Amaro and Steven Stern; and State Assemblyman Andrew Raia. “At a time when many institutions have to cut programs, the Vanderbilt is pleased to be able to expand its education outreach,” Reinheimer said. “Our Traveling Classroom - and our partnership with the National Grid Foundation - will enable us to enhance the Vanderbilt’s longtime role as an adjunct to the science curriculum in local schools. The Discovering the Universe program perfectly complements our planetarium programs by
providing students with observation principles for studying space.” “Helping children to become excited about science is one of the most critical educational priorities we have as a nation and this stunning traveling window into the Universe will become a major resource for encouraging Long Island students to pursue careers in science,” said Bob Keller of the National Grid Foundation. “We are thrilled to be partnering with the Vanderbilt, one of Long Island’s premier museums. With their highly skilled team of educators and a stateof-the-art planetarium, we are certain that the Vanderbilt will play an even larger role in promoting student interest in science.” The program features state-ofthe-art technology, engaging professionally developed curricula, and a downloadable teacher-resource guide, Reinheimer said. Discovering the Universe will bring cutting-edge science education to students in grades 3 through 12. The program will be offered at no cost to a limited number of schools. Discovering the Universe is designed to meet New York State standards for Mathematics, Science, and Technology (MST) and directly addresses a number of the articulated MST standards. The Classroom consists of five stations: Light, Telescope, Digital Imaging, 3-D Universe, and Gravity. Each offers hands-on interactive exhibitions that engage visitors in different topics. Moving through the exhibition effectively reflects the step-by-step process by which astronomers study the Universe. Pre- and post-visit materials will be provided
to classroom teachers to enhance the student learning experience. The Vanderbilt will survey participating educators to measure the success of the program. The Vanderbilt Museum
and Planetarium has 100,000 annual visitors, which include more than 50,000 schoolchildren from more than 100 Long Island school districts.

Specific topics to be covered will include: assessment of food selectivity, creating a dietary record, conducting preference assessments related to food selectivity, selecting an intervention and much more. The workshop will be conducted Dr. McDonald, an Associate Professor in the Special Education Department of Hofstra University. Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with Autism on Long Island, is hosting a conference on Preschoolers with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The full day conference will feature two workshops on the inclusion of young children with ASD in integrated settings as well as eating issues in young children with ASD. The conference will be held on Tuesday, November 5th from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Clarion Hotel located at 3845 Veterans Memorial Highway in Ronkonkoma. The first workshop will focus on supporting young students with ASD in the least restrictive environment. There will be a review of components of successful inclusion models. Assessment protocols will be discussed, as well as implementation of specific curricular targets, to promote success in the inclusion environment. Ways in which reinforcement can be used strategically in the LRE will be covered. Data collection methods will be reviewed as they relate to ongoing data analysis and decision-making in the integrated setting. Food selectivity and other feeding problems can occur in children with ASD. The second workshop will review specific food selectivity

Traveling The World Students from James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District were able to travel the world in the span of one hour, all in the comfort of the school’s auditorium. The students participated in a special presentation titled The World: A Multicultural Journey Outline, by Mike Harold. Mr. Harold explained to students that he has traveled the world, visiting 80 different countries
so far in his lifetime. He captivated students with his adventures of traveling to remote villages to truly learn the culture of those places. “When I travel, I don’t go to the cities. I only take what I can fit in a backpack and travel to villages by foot because I love to learn about their way of life,” he said. In addition to his stories, Mr. Harold showed students artifacts from his travels, including a spear from Uganda, a homemade
scooter from Thailand and insect specimens he bought in the Amazon. To the delight of the students, he also showed them photos from his trips around the world, taking students to such places as the Grand Canyon, the Galapagos Islands, Panama, Peru and Brazil. Through his adventures, students were able to learn about life outside of the United States and how other people throughout the world live.

Learning Healthy Habits Students at Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District participated in in an assembly titled “FoodPlay,” through which they learned health and nutrition information in a fun and interactive way. The Emmy-winning presentation featured characters Coach and
Johnny, who presented key messages pertaining to healthy habits. Students learned that their bodies are made from the foods they eat and the difference between “whoa foods” such as sugars, salts and fats, and “go foods” such as fruit and vegetables. Coach and Johnny also discussed the importance of balancing foods and never skipping
meals, as well as how sugar affects the body. Throughout the presentation, Coach and Johnny asked students questions to get them involved in learning the important lessons. Students also participated through songs and were given nutrition handouts to take home that evening.

Providing Assistance Veteran volunteers and community organizations were asked to provide assistance as a community service at the 4th Annual Veterans Stand Down on September 27 at the Northport VA Medical Center. The Northport VAMC sponsored this biannual event to help homeless, and at risk for homelessness, Veterans in need of assistance. Fifty three (53) Federal, State, County and local human services agencies were present to assist Veterans in need of health, employment, financial,
housing, educational, and VA Benefits. In addition, a meal and hair cut station were available as well as two local food pantries (Island Harvest & Long Island Cares) and a clothing closet to all Veterans in attendance. Furthermore, two hundred and three (203) Veterans in need of assistance were helped by those in attendance. National Coming Out Day Members of the Harborfields High School Gay-Straight Alliance celebrated National Coming Out Day on October 11th with the entire high school community. Club members, advised by school social worker Susan Koenig, set up an information table outside of the cafeteria and encouraged fellow students to sign a pledge to support equality for all. “National Coming Out Day isn’t about coming out as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender,” said Ms.
Koenig. “It’s about coming out in support of safe schools for our students.” In addition to sponsoring the pledge, GSA club members also handed out ribbons and “I’m an ally” stickers. According to junior Emma De Matteo, president of the GSA, “This day is important because it spreads awareness and gives others a better understanding of gay rights. It’s nice to see how much support we have in this school.” Club vice president John Dwyer added, “Today shows other people who are still hiding
that it’s OK. There’s so much support here that you can be yourself.” Ms. Koenig cites the support from the faculty and staff at the high school as being instrumental to the GSA’s success. “Principal Dr. Manning has been so supportive and has made it known that all students are safe here at school,” she said. Junior Allie Crayne agrees. “Entering high school is difficult as it is. Knowing we had allies when we came here as freshmen made it much more comfortable.”
