The parade started at the library, where students gathered and prepared their floats for the journey to Harborfields High School. There are those who contend that things were far simpler before technology invaded our daily lives and made us dependent upon electronic devices glued to our hands. In some respects, yes, absolutely. But the benefits are not to be so lightly dismissed. Case in point: the recent avalanche of new smartphones which have been released. What’s the difference between one model and the next? Is it worth the money invested? In reality, not much, and no. But as a society, we have been conditioned to want the next big thing, at whatever the cost. It’s become more of a status symbol than a matter of functionality.

For me, the selling point of a smartphone, initially, was to have the ability to text using a full keyboard, rather than one button at a time, letter by tedious letter. I was extremely late to the party, in that respect, having held on to my cherished flip phone for far longer than most in my age bracket. But once I upgraded, there was no going back. Fast forward several years, and my motivation isn’t the slightly larger screen, the slightly longer battery life or a new collection of apps and emojis – it is, quite simply, the camera. My love of photography, while always a passion, has never been complemented by an equally-adequate camera. After reading the reviews of the latest iPhone, it seemed to be a no-brainer to invest

the money into a two-forone deal – a state-of-the-art phone coupled with a camera that earned the praises of numerous professional photographers. And so I took the plunge. And it was worth it. All the downfalls the previous camera had been plagued with, eliminated. Low light, zoom, clarity… now vastly improved upon. It may not seem like much to those who yearn for the simplicity of the days of the rotary phone; but, for me, it is everything. And so I embark on my next photographic pursuit, new phone/camera in hand, embracing the technology which surrounds us. Sometimes, the function does outweigh the downfall after all.

on a holiday theme. The students paraded down the streets of Greenlawn with the varsity cheerleaders leading the way on a firetruck. The cheerleaders threw candy to onlookers as they passed, while the junior varsity cheerleaders and Oldfield Middle School cheerleaders followed close behind. The Harborfields High School marching band and kickline made their way down the street with the grade-level floats behind them. Homecoming King Koby Cordova and Queen Jessica Martino rode on the senior float as they posed for pictures and waved. Superintendent of Schools Diana Todaro took part in the parade festivities with Deputy Superintendent Dr. Francesco Ianni before heading to the high school for the football game. This was the last homecoming for Todaro before her retirement this January. “I have such heartfelt memories of all the years that I’ve been here,” she said. “Today it brought tears to my eyes to think that it is my last one but I know that the tradition will continue here in

Harborfields.” After the parade, the Harborfields community packed the stands at James T. Brennan Memorial Field for the homecoming game. During halftime, the varsity cheerleaders entertained with their spirited routine, the marching band performed with the kickline and students from the various grades competed in a dance competition. Halftime ended with a special thank you and appreciation send off for Michael Potter, the head football coach for the Harborfields Tornadoes from 2001-2015. Potter took the field with Principal Timothy Russo, coaches, his former football players and his family standing by his side. He was thanked in front of the community for his strong impact as a football coach and for his years of dedication to the team. While the game ended with a loss for the Harborfields Tornadoes, it did not dampen the spirit of the day which was filled with laughs, cheers and support from the community.

Ally Day The Oldfield Middle School Gay-Straight Alliance club declared September 30th as the school’s first ever Ally Day and celebrated with a banner for students and faculty to sign. The club sponsored Ally Day after hearing about National Ally Week, which is commemorated during the week of September 26th30th to create a dialogue about how everyone can be better allies to LGBT youth.

The school tries to hold as many events and programs as possible throughout the year to encourage students to be upstanders and heroes to their classmates. All grade levels and staff members had the option to participate if they wanted to by signing their names to a colorful banner in the school’s cafeteria. The signatures left were those that declared themselves an Ally to their classmates. “The banner will serve as a daily reminder to

Norwood Avenue Elementary School celebrated National Walk to School Day on the morning of October 5th as students and their families dedicated time towards raising awareness regarding health, community and the benefits of walking or biking to school. School officials decided to participate in the national event about four

years ago after hearing about the initiative from a PTA member. The school community showed great support for the day. Even students that lived far from the school participated by parents parking nearby and walking over. Students walked, rode their scooters and some even biked to the school. Principal Michael Genovese greeted parents and students as they

arrived. Norwood Avenue mother Tish Sposato took part with her family to take her thirdgrader and fifth-grader to school. They walked about a mile from their house and Sposato praised the school for taking part in the national movement. “It’s a great initiative,” she said. “I wish they could walk every day.”

Exhibit Reception Northport-East Northport School District staff members were invited to the Northport Historical Society on October 2nd for a reception to celebrate their new rotating exhibit, “From A One School Community to a Community of Schools: The Evolution of the Northport-East Northport School District.” Members of the board of education, Superintendent of Schools Robert Banzer and the Norwood Avenue Select Chorale Group attended the event.

The new exhibit showcases the development of the district, from oneroom schoolhouses to the formation of a union school district. The exhibit also features information about how the schools handled events throughout history and contains memorabilia from the past. This includes yearbooks, photographs, a prom dress from 1987 and more. The Norwood Avenue Select Chorale Group, which is made up of fifthgraders from the Norwood Avenue Elementary

School, performed The National Anthem at the exhibit opening, as well as a ballad entitled “All the Pretty Little Horses.” The students ended their performance with a rendition of the song “Tomorrow” from Annie. “The students enjoyed their time at the museum so much,” said music teacher Maureen Edwards. “We are planning a field trip for the entire fifth grade to visit the exhibit in December.” EXHIBIT RECEPTION - Fifth-grade students in the Norwood Avenue Select Chorale Group sang the National Anthem for attendees at the Northport Historical Society’s new exhibit opening. Honors Received hesitation he entered the vehicle through one of the broken windows despite not having adequate protective equipment. When Ex-Chief Italiano finally made contact with the victim, he began to converse with her and attempted to evaluate the extent of her injuries. He determined she was very unstable and he needed to initiate a rapid extrication. He then positioned himself with his back

lying on the roof of the inverted car and released the victim’s seatbelt in order to remove her from the driver’s seat. In doing so, Italiano was then pinned under the victim, but she was in a safer position for access when the rescue crews were able to force entry into the car. Due to the severity of the accident and position of

the vehicle, rescue efforts were prolonged. Italiano was positioned underneath the victim for approximately 30 minutes as rescue crews utilized Hurst tools in close proximity. The patient’s mental status was rapidly deteriorating throughout the entire rescue operation, however, having Ex-Chief Italiano in contact with the victim and able to give constant updates to the EMS personnel proved vital. Upon extrication, the victim was transported by Suffolk County Police Department helicopter to Stony Brook hospital. For his heroic efforts under great personal risk, Ex-Chief Jack Italiano Jr., of the Cold Spring Harbor Fire Department, was awarded the Vocational Education and Extension Board’s Silver Medal of Valor. Ex-Chief Italiano is a 35-year veteran of the fire service, and served as Chief of the Cold Spring Harbor Fire Department in 1991. He is also a former member of both the Huntington and Huntington Manor Fire Departments. Ex-Chief Scott Dalrymple is a 20year member of the Greenlawn Fire Department, and served as Chief from 2011-2012. Dalrymple received the “Frank L. Obremski Coordinator of the Year Award” for his outstanding service. Dalrymple is one of five Deputy Fire Coordinators for the Town of Huntington who respond to all major emergencies in the town and county-wide.

Two Huntington Town volunteer firefighters were honored at the Suffolk County Medal of Valor ceremony on September 25th, which recognized firefighters from throughout the County for their heroic actions and extraordinary service. Ex-Chief Jack Italiano Jr. of the Cold Spring Harbor Fire Department was presented with the Vocational Education and Extension Board’s “Silver Medal of Valor” for his heroic actions at a car accident with a victim trapped. ExChief Scott Dalrymple of the Greenlawn Fire Department received the “Frank L. Obremski Coordinator of the Year Award” for his outstanding service. On August 28th, 2015 at approximately 6:30 p.m., Ex-Chief Jack Italiano Jr. was returning home from the Cold Spring Harbor Fire Department after an earlier alarm, when he encountered a large amount of traffic at the intersection of County Road 108 and Woodbury Road. He was alerted by a bystander that there was a car overturned in the woods with a woman trapped inside. Ex-Chief Italiano immediately instructed one of the bystanders to call 911 as he entered the woods to evaluate the severity of the accident. When he arrived at the overturned car, he noticed that the driver’s side door was pinned up against a large tree and was unable to be opened. Italiano then tried to enter the vehicle through the passenger side doors but both of them were pinned shut. Without

Councilwoman Susan A. Berland hosted the organizational meeting of the Huntington Youth Council (HYC) for the 2016-2017 school year at Town Hall on Tuesday, September 27th. At this meeting Councilwoman Berland and the members of the HYC donated the study guides collected last spring by the HYC to representatives of the South Huntington School District; Superintendent David Bennardo, Assistant Superintendent Joseph Centamore, Walt Whitman High School Principal John Murphy and Assistant Principal Jonathan Varlamos. “The students on the Huntington Youth Council are deeply committed to bettering the Town

of Huntington and advocating for issues facing their peers,” commented Councilwoman Susan A. Berland. “I am very proud of the Council for organizing the study guide drive and collecting hundreds of books to give to students in need. These books were donated to help prepare high school students for achieving excellence in SAT’s, PSAT’s, regents and higher level classes. I am looking forward to working together with the HYC and continuing to build on their successes.” The Huntington Youth Council was founded in 2003 by Councilwoman Susan A. Berland and is comprised of students from every public high school in the Town of Huntington. The HYC

meets monthly to discuss issues that affect the youth in our community and plan numerous events that engage their peers in local issues, including a “Sport Swap” at the Dix Hills Ice Rink scheduled for Saturday, October 15th, from 2 to 4 p.m., the “Holiday Pet Food Drive” and the annual “Youth Forum” that will be hosted in 2017. Over the past 13 years, the HYC has raised thousands of dollars for local charities in the Town of Huntington. Harley Avenue Primary School gathered for a school-wide assembly to announce and celebrate the first Knights of the Month of the new school year on September 28th. Kindergartner Jeffrey Rios, Jr., first grader Patrick Heffron and second grader Michael Dalrymple were selected as a Harley Knight for the month

of September based on their ability to showcase excellent character. Students and staff showed their Elwood pride by dressing in school colors for the event and the Elwood Knight mascot made a special appearance along with Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Maureen

Hull, who joined in the celebration. Principal Elissa Toubin announced each Knight to the crowd of students and invited the boys to the stage where they received a Harley of the Month t-shirt. The three Knights then led the students in The Pledge of Allegiance and the Harley Promise.

Musical Honors The Elwood Union Free School District is pleased to announce that eight students from ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School have been selected to represent the district in the NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) All-State and NYSCAME (New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education) AllCounty music festivals. Students were chosen for this prestigious honor based on the proficiency they demonstrated at NYSSMA auditions last spring. NYSCAME All-County has three rehearsals in November, which will culminate in a concert at Northport High School on November 18th.

Barbering Teacher James Ricciardo and several graduates from the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Adult Education Barbering Program volunteered their time and provided shaves and haircuts to 69 men at the recent Stand Down for veterans in need at the Northport VA Medical Center. They serviced veterans who served in Desert Storm, Vietnam, and Afghanistan. The original Stand Down was used during the

Vietnam War to provide a safe retreat for units returning from combat operations. Today the purpose of Stand Down is for veterans in need to be afforded the opportunity to receive services in one location. They may enjoy a warm meal, receive items for personal hygiene, get information about medical and dental care, and enjoy the camaraderie of other veterans. Ricciardo said, “We participate in the Stand Down each year because

we want to give back. It is a way for us to serve those individuals who served our country. We hope when we give them a nice clean shave and a haircut, it will make the veterans feel better.” Hayden Sonner a 2015 graduate said, “This is my second year doing this and I think it’s a great way to give back. I’m very thankful for everything the men and women in the military have done to protect us.”

Students Selected The Harborfields Central School District recently announced that 12 Harborfields High School students have been selected for the NYSCAME All-County music festival. Five of these students have also been chosen to represent the district at the 2016 NYSSMA All-State festival. Students picked for NYSCAME All-County and NYSSMA All-State are among an extremely selective group of music students. NYSCAME AllCounty students were selected based on NYSSMA scores and how they rank across Suffolk County. The 12 students will take part in three rehearsal sessions in November that will conclude with a concert at Northport High School on November 18th at 7:30 p.m. The five Harborfields students selected for

NYSSMA All-State were chosen based on NYSSMA scores and how those scores compared to others across the state. The students will visit Rochester,from December 1st-4th for intensive rehearsals resulting in weekend concerts at Kodak Hall at the Eastman Theatre. “These students give their all in their musical studies, putting countless hours into private and group practicing,” said music dpartment coordinator Daniel Bilawsky. “They are extraordinarily dedicated and they deserve every bit of this honor that they have received. Semiﬁnalists Named Six Harborfields High School students were selected as semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Students include Greta K. Browne, Jacob I. Chalif, Ishaan Lohia, Casandra M. Moisanu, Mia Santomauro and 2015 early graduate Connor D. Stewart. Those chosen will compete for approximately 7,500 National Merit Scholarships totaling approximately $33 million being offered next spring. To enter the National Merit

Scholarship Program, students completed the 2015 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last October. Their high scores placed them among the 16,000 semifinalists. The program honors students who show exceptional academic ability and the potential for strong success in college. They have been chosen out of approximately 1.6 million students in more than 22,000 high schools and will continue

to compete to become finalists. This is the highest number of semifinalists from Harborfields High School since 2002. “We are extremely proud,” said Principal Timothy Russo. “These students are among the very best and brightest in the nation and they have achieved this recognition due to their hard work and extraordinary commitment to academics.”
