Student Art Show The Huntington Arts Council is proud to present Nightmare on Main Street Student Art Exhibit Juried by Jason Stuart. The exhibit is on display in our Main Street Gallery, 213 Main Street in Huntington, from October 13th through November 4th. We will be hosting a Costume Party Reception Party on Friday, October 27th, 6 to 8 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for best costume. This is a free event, all are welcome to attend. In its 6th year Nightmare on Main Street features the work of student artists from across Long Island in grades 6 - 12. Congratulations to the following students for being accepted into this juried show; Danielle Christian, Daniela Crimi, Julia Davi, Madeline Franz, Brandon Fuerstein, Luke Gelfman, Rachel Goldsmith, Alexandria Goodman, Olivia Greiss, Ilyssa Halbreich, Ashlin Hanley, Jenna Hart, Ben Herbert, Princeton Huang, Leilani Kaiser, Emily Kubrick, Carra Lanigan, Bryan Lee, Christopher McCartney,
Meghan Monahan, Chiori Negishi, Kenya Pinos, Yusef Rahimzada, Mehr Sharma, Lily Shumsky, Katelynn Sinnott, Ashley Zhang The Huntington Arts Council invited students to submit work that was inspired by the story telling narrative of Halloween. Horror films, legends and comics surrounding Halloween allow people to embrace a side of themselves that is considered dark and strange. Prizes valued at $75 each and will be awarded in two categories: Senior Division (grades 9-12) and Junior division (grades 6-8) during the Costume Party Reception on October 27th. “I found everything to be done with great spirit and effort on everyone’s part. I was looking for a combination of skill, imagination, originality and passion put into the work.” Juror, Jason Stuart said of his selections for the exhibit. Executive Director, Marc Courtade added,”We are excited to once again present Nightmare on Main Street Student Art
Exhibit. This show is now in its 6th year and as popular as ever. The scope of talent is remarkable and we hope to see a lot of the students at our costume reception in our gallery on Friday, October 27th, from 6 to 8 p.m. It always a fun night! Please make sure to stop by our gallery and celebrate Halloween with us!” About the juror: Jason Stuart studied at Hoftsra and then attended the School of Visual Arts in NYC studying illustration and cartooning. His work is mainly illustrations with india ink and brush which he finds the perfect medium to translate his macabre ideas into reality. Jason owns Poppycock Productions which produces storybooks, tarot cards and comic books. He is showing at Ripe Art Gallery in Huntington. Gingerbread House Competition The Town of Huntington and the Huntington Village Parade and Festival committee have extended until November 10th the deadline for applying to enter the Third Annual Gingerbread House Competition, one of the many activities in Huntington Village November 26th. The extension covers both categories – bakers age 14 and under and those 15 and up – with the winner in each category to be decided by the public, who will be asked to cast ballots after viewing the displays of the finalists in two storefronts on New York Avenue the day of the parade and festival. The winners will be announced at the annual tree lighting that follows the parade.
While the deadline is the same in both categories, the maximum dimensions differ: not more than 20 inches in height or base for the younger group and 26 inches for the older category. Last year, nearly 400 people cast ballots for the winners in two categories, commercial bakeries and home bakers. The home baker competition proved so popular that the committee added the second home baker category, grouped by age, substituting for the commercial bakeries. In
each category, the prices will be Amazon gift cards: $200 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place. After the parade and festival, all the finalist entries will be moved to Town Hall, where they will be put on display through January. Last year, thousands of visitors marveled at the six bakery entries as they passed through the Town Hall lobby. While the application to enter needs to be submitted by November 10th, the actual entries will not be due until sometime closer to the 26th. Participants will be notified when and where to bring their entries.
Grand Marshals Honored
In honor of Christopher Columbus and Italian American Heritage, the OSIA State President Robert M Ferrito, Town of Huntington Supervisor and Council, and the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce hosted the Long Island Columbus day parade. Legislator Leslie Kennedy, being a proud Italian American, took part in the event to honor ItalianAmerican heritage and the two Grand Marshals of the parade. The parade, which marched down Route 25-A
in Huntington, was led by two Grand Marshals, Sal “The Voice” Valentinetti, and Robert Fonti. Sal is a young man who first starred on the hit TV show “The Voice”, since then he has had success singing American standards in the style of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, and now has shows booked across the county, and has two albums. Robert Fonti is a businessman who founded Vincent James Management Company; he is also active in Suffolk County and Huntington politics. Legislator
Kennedy presented Proclamations affixed with the Seal of the Suffolk County Legislature to the Grand Marshals. “I am proud to be an Italian-American, and proud of all the contributions they have added to our America. America is truly a melting pot and it is clear that Italian culture has helped to make America great,” said Leslie Kennedy. “Both Sal and Robert have done amazing things in their lives and careers, and they exemplify the ItalianAmerican experience.”
Commended at Glenn Elwood-John H. Glenn High School seniors Joseph Franzese and Brendan Harrigan were recently named Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship program. Each received a letter of commendation from the school and the
National Merit Scholarship Corporation for their outstanding academics. Although they’re not continuing in the National Merit Scholarship competition, Joseph and Brendan placed among the top 3 percent of students across the country that
took the 2016 PSAT, and have demonstrated strong potential for academic success. “We are extremely proud of our Commended Students and recognize the magnitude of this achievement,” said Principal Carisa Burzynski.

The founders of Long Island Fight for Charity (LIFFC), one of Long Island’s largest and most anticipated charity networking events, recently hosted a Boxer Matchup Reception at SIMPLAY in Hauppauge. Volunteer boxers learned who their opponents are for the 14th Main Event to be held in November. A crowd of over 150 friends, family members, fans, sponsors and committee members gathered at this exciting program and network event. The boxers, after months of preparation, fundraising and training, were anxious to know who they would be facing in the ring at the 14th Main Event which will be held at the Hilton Long Island in Melville on Monday evening, November 21st. The Main Event will feature 10 bouts with boxers who represent the Long Island business community. Boxers will go toe-to-toe on the canvas for three sanctioned rounds. “Our volunteer boxers are entering the home stretch of their training and preparation for the 2017 Main Event. With
approximately 7 weeks left before the Main Event on November 20th, our boxers and everyone in our organization will be using the time to make a final push in efforts to raise funds to help our fellow Long Islanders in need. At this point, we can reflect upon our accomplishments over the past year and know our efforts going forward will have a positive impact on each and every one of the individuals, children and families we strive to help; they are the reason why we fight,” said Jamie Austin, co-founder LIFFC. One who saw you as a raw but precious thing, a jewel that, with wisdom, could be polished to a proud shine?” ~ Mitch Albom Last week, I was saddened to learn of the passing of a most cherished teacher, mentor and friend, Mr. Elsesser - “Harry” as he signed the yearly Christmas cards we exchanged. They say that some people leave footprints on your heart… this was most certainly true of the man who took me under his wing way back in 4th grade, and helped me to soar to new heights I never thought possible. Up to that point, I had been a fairly good student, conscientious enough in the academic department, but lacking a bit of the “plays well with others” skills that tend to come with time. Seeing this unfulfilled potential, Mr. Elsesser made it his mission to ensure that I would flourish under his watchful eye.

His class was one of those that you find yourself reflecting upon from time to time with a smile, recalling anecdotes and amusing instances, such as when he would entertain us with stories of his travels - to Africa, the Galapagos Islands, Japan, and beyond. Occasionally, there would be touches of Swahili thrown into the vocabulary lesson for good measure. As I entered fifth grade a better all-around student and person, Mr. E. decided to retire after 30 years of teaching in the Lindenhurst school district. Saddened to see him go, and promising to keep in touch, my mother - who had also been a student in the district when Mr. Elsesser began his tenure there started a yearly correspondence, exchanging Christmas cards and keeping each other updated on the happenings in our respective lives. Years later, I took over this tradition and began sending my own correspondence, filling Mr.
E. in on the comings and goings of college and, eventually, my blossoming career. How proud he was to learn that I was utilizing my love of writing and had become a weekly columnist for my old hometown paper. Often, he would call my desk at the office, greeting me with, Is this Miss Jamie Lynn Ryan, the reporter?? We would chat about how work was going, the family, had I seen any of my old classmates lately, what I had for lunch… and always, without fail, as we were getting ready to hang up, he would say, Send hugs and kisses to your parents, and of course to you too. What a wonderful man, and what a treasured friendship, one sustained for over a quarter of a century. How lucky I was that our paths crossed in life, and how blessed I am to have so many fond memories to reflect upon, and remember with a smile. May you rest in peace, Mr. E… Love and kisses, Jamie

renowned casting director of the Broadway revival of The Rise and Fall of Little Voice and producer of more than 200 different Broadway concerts in NYC and across the United States. Bond Proposal Meeting In an effort to inform the community about the upcoming bond referendum, the Elwood Board of Education invites all interested residents to attend building tours on Wednesday, November 8th. The tours will be held at Harley Avenue Primary School, James H. Boyd Intermediate School, Elwood Middle School and Elwood-John H. Glenn High School beginning at 5
p.m., 5:30 p.m., 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. in each building. An administrator will guide residents through the school, identify current facility challenges and highlight the projects to be addressed through the proposed bond. In addition, community members are also invited to attend a Superintendent’s Community Forum on Monday, November 20th at 7 p.m. at Elwood Middle
School. At that time, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert will provide an overview of the bond proposal and answer any questions residents may have. All information related to the bond can be found on the district’s website, www.elwood.k12.ny.us. The vote is scheduled for Tuesday, November 28th from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the District Office.
Federal Grant Funding Part of a $500,000 U.S. Department of Justice grant the Suffolk County Police Department is receiving to combat the influence of street gangs such as MS-13 will be used to implement programs first discussed at a July meeting that included top Suffolk County officials and the Huntington Town Board. At that meeting, the officials – County Executive Steve Bellone, Police Commissioner Tim Sini, Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and Town Council Members – agreed to implement a comprehensive strategy focused on attacking gangs and reducing violent crime in the Town. Among the approaches discussed were ways to engage youth, through the schools or social service programs offered by the county and the Town, to discourage them from joining gangs. Also discussed were state and federal grants that might be available and County-Town cooperation in applying for those grants. Councilwoman Tracey A. Edwards had called for the meeting in response
to Huntington Station and Greenlawn community concerns about additional measures that government could undertake combat gang violence and guns. “We all walked out of that meeting with a unified resolve to act strategically in partnership with all levels of government to protect our communities,” Councilwoman Edwards said. “This funding will help implement some of the ideas that emanated from that meeting.” “We agreed at that meeting that tackling the problem required working together to coordinate the work being done by law enforcement and social service and youth programs,” Supervisor Petrone said. “This funding will enable us to move ahead at full speed toward making a dent in the effects gangs and violent crime have had on the quality of life in some of our neighborhoods.” Commissioner Sini said, “A year ago, we launched an aggressive gang eradication strategy. Since then, the Suffolk County Police Department has arrested more than 300 MS-13 gang members and
reduced crime to historic levels. More work needs to be done, however. That’s why I asked the United States Attorney General for this grant which will be used to further protect our communities from gangs, including in the Town of Huntington. I want to thank the Huntington Town officials for their vision in how to put these additional resources to work in our community. This is an example of effective collaboration among various levels of government to protect our families.” The grant comes from the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods, a national initiative aimed at stemming gang and gun violence. In announcing the grant, U. S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions called the project the centerpiece of his department’s crimereduction strategy. County officials plan to use the funding in a variety of ways, including establishing targeted police patrols and mentoring and truancy programs to provide an alternative to gangs.
