The New York State Department of Transportation is proposing to modify exit 53 of the Long Island Expressway (I-495) in the Towns of Islip and Smithtown, Suffolk County, to ease traffic flow, enhance connectivity and improve access to Crooked Hill Road. The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. Every bit of money raised through their annual e v e n t (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The event will run on October 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. You can become involved with the Cemetery of Lost Souls in many ways. They are actively looking for volunteers in the following areas: Digital Marketing (to help with social media marketing), Scare Team Members (actors to help put on the event), Security (watching over the event and making sure all guests are safe), and Bake Team Members (to donate baked

To recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Northwell Health will hold a free education event about breast reconstruction surgery options from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22 at Northwell Health’s Corporate Conference Center at 2000 Marcus Avenue in New Hyde Park. Northwell’s highly experienced plastic surgeons will discuss
advanced breast reconstruction techniques and talk about various considerations that go into making choices about breast reconstruction. Participants will meet with women who have undergone breast reconstruction, share their stories and also see their results. Northwell’s plastic surgeons are at the forefront of innovation, performing
3D microsurgery, robotic mastectomy and reconstruction and lymphatic reconstructions as well as pioneering work to enhance recovery after breast reconstruction. Keynoting the event will be Stacey Sager, a reporter at New York’s WABCTV. The expert panel of plastic reconstructive breast surgeons includes: Armen Kasbian, MD; Lyle Leipziger, MD; Victor

A warm fall day was the perfect backdrop for the Northport Tigers to take the field during the district’s annual homecoming festivities held on Sept. 28. Students, faculty and members of the community donned blue and gold as they packed Tiger Stadium to demonstrate their pride and support of the district’s football team, who played an aggressive matchup against Deer park High School, ultimately winning the game with a score of 31-6. The day’s celebration commenced earlier in the morning with an Athletic Hall of Fame induction in the auditorium. Introduced to the community were the 1983 Varsity Baseball team, the Atkinson family, Lois Elsinger, Grace Hawkins (Class of 2006), Dr. Rick Johnson (Class of 1971), Kevin O’Sullivan (Class of 1998), Rob Parker (Class of 2004), Dr. James Ruck (Class of 1962), George Tiffany (posthumous), and Phil Weber (Class of 1957). The game commenced with the singing of the national anthem by the chorus. The halftime festivities included a show by the award-winning marching band, as well as the Tigerettes and Flagline who performed a variety of popular songs for the crowd. Later in the evening, seniors Joe Pagnotta and Meghan Kropp were crowned homecoming king and queen at the dance.

There was “Unity in the Community” and a major show of spirit and pride as Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) joined Huntington schools, civics, nonprofits, residents and local dignitaries at the annual Huntington Awareness Day . Under the direction of Chairs Dolores Thompson of the Huntington Station Enrichment Center and Dr. David Bennardo,
superintendent of the South Huntington School District, the picture-perfect weather day began with a parade stepping off from Huntington High School and culminated at a free family festival at Stimson Middle School on Oakwood Road in Huntington Station. The fair featured music, food, games and crafts. Legislator Donnelly presented a Proclamation to Willie Perez, a leader of the Light of Salvation
Church in Huntington Station, who served as Grand Marshal. “Awareness Day is always a wonderful unifying event that showcases all that is great about Huntington,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I applaud and thank the many wonderful volunteers and Co-Chairs Dolores Thompson and Dr. Bennardo in particular for working so hard to make it a great day for all.”

Students “Start With Hello” Officers with the Suffolk County Sherriff’s Office paid a visit to Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School on Sept. 17 and taught third, fourth and fifth graders an important life skill: empathy. Administrators held three assemblies, each of which focused on teaching students how to be inclusive of their classmates simply by approaching them and saying hello. The “Start with Hello” initiative, created by Sandy Hook Promise, focuses on uniting people of different backgrounds to prevent social isolation. Deputy Sheriff Thomas
P. Indence explained that there are three steps to follow: “See someone alone,” “reach out and help” and “start with hello.” By doing so he said that the students can help prevent bullying, violence and depression. “The person you say hello to could become your very best friend,” he said. Still, Deputy Sheriff Investigator Jacob Gross acknowledged that it’s hard to approach someone new and offered several tips to do so. To ease any feelings of anxiousness, he suggested that the students recall a time that they felt lonely and wanted a friend
to play with. Additionally, he advised them to take a deep breath and possibly invite a friend to go with them. To conclude the assembly, Michelle Meskin, the school’s psychologist, walked the students through an online scenario where the students had to identify a lonely student, and offer a hello, which she said can range from a highfive to a smile. Students are encouraged throughout the school year to make efforts to say hello and to perform random acts of kindness
