THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI: SCHOOL OF MY DREAMS

to me than picking a college. Over the past few years, I’ve wrestled with the idea of choosing the right school for me. After watching my brother make his decision, and then regret it during his freshman year, I’ve realized that this is a very important choice. My brother eventually transferred to the University of Miami, and hasn’t stopped talking about it since. He loves it, and after visiting, I fell in love too. The campus is beautiful, the academic reputation is unmatched and the Toppel Career Center is an invaluable resource which I hope to take advantage of.

This fall, the Art League of Island has combined two popular events into one, the recently introduced Friday TRY-DAYS with a long-running favorite evening event called Art After Dark. For several years now, Art After Dark has provided a fun evening of visual arts and socializing in the Art League’s spacious Elizabeth S. Livingston art center. Visitors can get a good look at the exhibit in the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery, or go to the art studios to see “pop-up” exhibits by local artists, view art demonstrations by Art League Instructors, and enjoy live music. Anyone can come in and enjoy the evening since Art After Dark is free and open to the general public. Friday TRY-DAYS were introduced in the spring to give people a chance to “test the waters” and try out a workshop in the course of a three-hour evening. Prices are nominal at $35 per person, $30 if one RSVP’s in advance. Workshop participants get to take home a finished work of art at the end of the evening and all materials are included. This fall, visitors to the center get the best of both worlds, with free art demonstrations beginning

at 6:30 p.m. and TRY-DAY workshops beginning at 7:00 p.m. Visitors can spend a few hours taking in the gallery exhibit, popup exhibits, viewing the free art demonstrations, and enjoying live music or maybe even open-mic poetry readings. Or, visitors can mingle and view a demo before heading to a workshop. Those who enjoy the free demo can come back the following month and take the threehour workshop at the next TRY-DAY/Art After Dark. The next TRY-DAY/Art After Dark on November 13th will feature live art demonstrations by Anu Annam (Watercolor), David Peikon (Oil Painting), and Suzanne Young (Charcoal/ Pastel Painting). They will be presenting their workshops at the December 11th event in addition to Dana Neger Lagos’ Jewelry workshop. Workshops on tap for November 13th are “Icicle Pendant” (Jewelry) with Dana Neger Lagos, “Painting Pollock” with Kevin Larkin, “Discovering Pastels” with Joel Spector, and “Painting with Photoshop” (Computer Graphics) with David Miller. One exception to the fall line-up is the return of the traditional Art After Dark on October 30th to

welcome the long-awaited return of renowned English watercolorist Jean Haines. Her workshops are full, but those who attend this Art After Dark can get a rare glimpse of Haines in action in her free public demonstration and book signing. David Miller will once again be leading his Halloween Interactive Extravaganza. Live music and refreshments will be available. The Art League of Long Island is a not-for-profit visual arts center serving the area since 1955. The Art League hosts a dozen different exhibits each year by contemporary local artists, offers those ages 5 and up more than 240 different visual arts classes and workshops in a variety of mediums, presents art and craft fairs, and hosts various lectures and other events. The Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery is open to the public free of charge Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and weekends from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Art League of Long Island is located at 107 East Deer Park Road in Dix Hills. The smell of fall is in the air and Halloween is right around the corner, leaving thrill-seekers tingling in anticipation for the 27th annual Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck Spooky Walk, hosted by the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws. Visitors will be chilled to the bones with this horrifying event, as they encounter surprises around every corner. This year’s Spooky Walk is sponsored by Capitol One Bank and will take place on October 16th-17th and 23rd-24th at Camp PaQua-Tuck from 7 to 9 p.m. The entire Spooky Walk trail takes 45 minutes to complete, making it the longest-lasting haunted walk on Long Island. This year’s theme features pirates and a haunted mansion. The trails takes guests through four buildings around the campgrounds, and on a walk through the woods and along Kaler’s Pond, where the angry ghosts of double-crossed pirates are rumored to live. A bypass route is available for guests who wish to exit before the end. There will also be a variety of refreshments at the event, including hamburgers, hot dogs, roasted corn, candy apples and hot pretzels. Admission to the event is $15 per person, with all of the proceeds benefitting the camp’s mission to provide a safe and funfilled environment for children and young adults with special needs during their summer and fall respite sessions. Thanks to thousands of participants, donors and guests, this event has raised $2.2 million for the camp since its first year in 1989. “Beware: the Spooky Walk is definitely not for the faint of heart,” says Marcella Weiss, member of the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws and coordinator of the Spooky Walk. “You never know what is going to chase you, or will just stay in place. Tech Challenge Half Hollow Hills High School East was abuzz with excitement as FIRST® Technology Challenge (FTC) representative Sam Alexander unveiled this year’s theme, FIRST RES-Q, to a crowd of high school students and their parents and coaches. As part of the kickoff event, Alexander showed a game reveal video detailing the objectives of the upcoming 2016 Challenge. This annual competition, organized by the FTC robotics program, puts each team’s robot in a (sometimes literally) head-to-head bracketed competition. At the event, robots are randomly assigned to compete together in the first round and re-assigned as the competition progresses, instantly turning foes into friends. This style of competition further emphasizes FIRST’s commitment to building values such as “coopertition” and respect. During the competition, robots are expected to accomplish several tasks, each of which is assigned a certain point value the more difficult a mission, the more points are awarded. Tasks for “RES-Q” include dropping plastic pieces of debris into buckets just outside the arena, knocking a

plastic man down a zip line into a bucket, climbing to various heights on a ramp called the “mountain” and hanging from a bar at the top of said incline, all before the timer runs out. Teams also receive points for robots that are partially or fully on the “mountain” when

other pillars, “gracious professionalism.” “One of the intentions of the competition is to promote teamwork over competition,” says School-Business Partnerships of LI, Inc. (SBPLI) FTC Director Chris Early. “There are many unique aspects of this game that promote gracious professionalism.” Those interested in learning more about the game were then invited to investigate a demo of the arena set up with debris scattered around the field and “mountains” in opposite corners, with dividing blue and red team lines running down the center of the arena.
