Two Elwood Track Stars Named All-Long Island Elwood-John H. Glenn High School studentathletes Sofia Condron and Kerri Giambruno were recently named to the AllLong Island team for the 2021 spring track season by the Nassau and Suffolk Track Coaches Association and USA Track & Field. Condron was chosen for her performance in the 800-meter race, where she

earned the title of overall Suffolk County champion. Giambruno was selected for her performance in the 100-meter hurdles, where she broke her own school record with a time of 14.74 and was named Suffolk County champion. “Both Sofia and Kerry displayed a tremendous amount of talent and leadership throughout a

very chaotic season,” said their coach, Patrick Burke. “This is an amazing accomplishment for both girls,” said Dave Shanahan, Elwood’s director of athletics, physical education, health and nurses. “These young ladies are exceptional both in the classroom and on the track.”

Northport High School Baseball Field Named For Longtime Coach And Educator John DeMartini

The Northport High School baseball field was renamed in honor of legendary coach and educator John “DeMar” DeMartini. The field dedication had dozens of current and former students, their families, and district staff and administration in attendance to celebrate. DeMartini, who has been with the district for seven decades, received tremendous praise from his colleagues and students alike. Many of those who spoke noted not only his

coaching abilities but his caring and committed nature. When addressing the audience, Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Mark Dantuono said “He truly loves what he does. I can’t think of a better person to have this unbelieveable honor bestowed upon.” Fellow baseball coach Sean Lynch added “He’s an amazing person. He’s given his heart and soul to this school district, and to the baseball program in particular.” Coach Richard Castellano and Coach Jim

DeRosa each elaborated on how deeply DeMartini cares for his students, and that while the field dedication and scoreboard sign may be new, the field has always belonged to DeMartini. Elwood’s All-State Student Musicians Recognized By NYSSMA

Two exceptional ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School student-musicians were selected by the New York State School Music Association to perform at the 2021 All-State Music Conference, and two additional students were selected as alternates. Thousands of students

across the state auditioned for this honor at solo and ensemble festivals last spring. The event will be held in Rochester from Dec. 2-5. Anson Kwan (bass) and Toni Meyer (alto) will perform with the All-State Mixed Chorus. Aaram Lee (violin) and Kaitlyn

Schieble (soprano) were named as alternates. “This is a culmination of all our effort and so many years put into music, so it’s nice to finally get recognized for it,” said Kwan. “Hard work does pay off,” said Lee.

Over time, homelessness has continued to become a growing community challenging, through deinstitutionalization, national de-funding of safety net programs in the 1980s, the war on drugs, housing market crashes, recessions, natural disasters and most signiﬁcantly (as the number one cause of homelessness on Long Island and nation-wide) the extremely high costs of housing and other expenses to live on Long Island, amongst other things. The mission of LICH is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. This non-proﬁt is excited to tell you about their 33rd Annual “Keys for the Homeless” Conference, which will be held on November 10, 2021 from 9am-3pm virtually. This year’s theme, “#StopInequity, Challenges Opportunities Resilience Equity for Homelessness”, was adopted from their experiences and challenges during the pandemic along with the opportunities that have been created in the face of those challenges, the resilience of those most affected by COVID and the need to ensure equity for our most vulnerable neighbors. The theme is a call to action and in their opinion, it’s long overdue.

Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was originally founded in 1985 as a grassroots local advocacy effort to bring nonproﬁts and other community partners together to unite around the cause of homelessness, seeking to expand and enhance services to meet local needs. As a small local entity, LICH has always relied on partnerships and joint efforts in order to adequately provide support for those that were experiencing homelessness on Long Island.

Preservation Long Island Announces 2021 List of Endangered Historic Places Preservation Long Island’s Endangered Historic Places List for 2021 includes seven sites and one district facing a variety of threats from demolition and overdevelopment, to a lack of municipal funding and support for historic preservation in communities throughout our region. Important historic places across Long Island are threatened by a variety of adverse conditions, from outright demolition to a lack of appreciation for their historic value, or the inability to develop sustainable longterm plans for preservation and stewardship. Preservation Long Island (formerly the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities), established the Endangered Historic Places Program (EHPP) with the goal of raising region-wide support for historic places facing precarious circumstances. “The program offers Long Islanders an opportunity to advocate for preservation in their communities while learning how to use tools like landmark designation, tax incentives, and public outreach,” said Alexandra Wolfe, Preservation Long Island’s Executive Director. “Our program partners receive priority technical assistance from our professional staff and their listings are featured on our website and social media”. The pandemic did not have a negative impact on the public response to the open call for nominations issued last November. “This year marks the largest number of nominations received in a single program year since the establishment of the program in 2010,” said Sarah Kautz, Preservation Long Island’s Director of Preservation and Advocacy. A total of 18 nominations were submitted for the 2021 program year from communities across Long Island. A panel of Preservation Long Island staff and trustees, as well as experts in architecture, historic preservation, and other related fields selected the properties based on three key criteria: overall historic significance, severity of the threat and impact the EHPP listing will have on efforts to

protect the nominated site. Each of the eight sites will be showcased in a series of free virtual programs that will include interviews and panel discussions open to the public. Purchased by East Hampton Town in 2014, this landmarked home and studios of Abstract Expressionist artists in Springs is threatened by vandalism, disrepair, and demolition. John Mackay III’s “Happy House”, Village of East Hills, Nassau County. One of the few remaining Gilded Age country houses in East Hills Village is threatened by demolition and subdivision. Peter Crippen Home Site, Town of Huntington, Suffolk County. A rapidly deteriorating property owned by Huntington Town with strong ties to Long Island’s early colonial development and African American history. Pyrrhus Concer Home Site, Village of Southampton, Town of Southampton Community Preservation Fund. Purchased by Southampton Town in 2015, restoration of this nationally significant site of African American history in Southampton Village is threatened by inter-municipal delays and other issues. Rogers/Remz Grain & Feed Building, Port Jefferson Station, Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County. This early industrial farming structure at the heart of Port Jefferson Station is threatened by demolition and urban renewal. Sag Harbor Hills, Azurest, Ninevah, Subdivisions (SANS) Historic District, Village of Sag Harbor, Suffolk County. Demolition and intensive redevelopment threaten one of

Bathed in autumn colors, Flowerfields Fairgrounds, once a turn of the century flower farm, will be filled with classic and collectible automobiles including show cars from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, one-of-a-kind custom cars, antiques, exotics, muscle cars and imports. Show cars will compete in classed judging; trophies will be granted in

The event also engaged participants with boat rides, mural painting, kids’ yoga, a hands-on compost tutorial, and wildflower seed planting. Guests enjoyed dinner and beverages while observing educational and interactive presentations, along with live music. Presenters included the Long Island Invasive Species Management Area; Peter H. Linderoth, Director of Water Quality at Save the Sound; and Peter Janow, local River Otter expert. Also in attendance was Charlie Muller, President and Founder of SWAN, and Darcy Lonsdale, Ph. D., professor in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University. There were about 100 attendees in total, at least 20 of which were children.

More about SWAN SWAN was founded in 2016 as an environmental nonprofit by Charlie Muller, Patty Neff Hodges and Steve Uzzo. The organization is involved in a number of projects dedicated to wetland protection, including over four years of participation in the Unified Water Study. Under this study, SWAN provides Save The Sound with hundreds of readings of critical water quality parameters from the Nissequogue River from May to October. SWAN Park was created for use by neighborhood residents to encourage community engagement and support for local wetlands. The park is located on on the southeastern shore of Fresh Pond in Fort Salonga. On Saturday, September 18th, 2021, Salonga Wetland Advocates Network, Inc. (SWAN), a 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt environmental nonprofit dedicated to revitalizing and protecting wetlands in Fort Salonga, hosted its 2021 Long Island Sound Fresh Pond Festival at Swan Park in Fort Salonga. The aim of the festival, which was funded by the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation, was to educate Long Islanders on how they can protect the wetlands and the LI Sound in their own communities, and how to do so in fun and inspiring ways. According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of

12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. Pinelawn Memorial Park And Arboretum Hosts 3rd Annual Honey Bee Experience On Sunday September 19th, 2021, Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum hosted its 3rd annual Honey Bee Experience event as part of its ongoing community education program. This educational and fun event highlighted the importance of honey bees in our environment and provided a safe, up-close look at these marvelous insects. Pinelawn hosts five beehives on property and those hives help in pollinating various gardens, trees and shrubs on the property. Over 320 guests attended the free event that featured educational activities such as honey bee arts & crafts, a “Find The Queen” activity where children searched for the queen bee within the observation hive, and fresh honey tasting. Pinelawn’s Master Beekeeper, Steve Chen, led a short Q&A and in- depth, hands-on learning experience at the hives. Some beekeepers have reported annual hive losses of 30% or more due to many causes including viruses, pesticide use, habitat loss, and climate change. As more and

more honey bee species are added to the list of endangered species, it is becoming more necessary than ever to educate the public on the essentialness of these insects.
