Assistant Superintendent for Administration and Human Resources Dr. Rory Manning addressed the new inductees. “Our school is great because of the people in it,” he said. “You are a part of that.” Manning also praised the parents of the new inductees and urged the students to thank their parents for their support. Suffolk County Legislator and guest speaker Dr. William Spencer Jr. took the stage and discussed the importance of character to the students. Spencer’s daughter Hannah, a Harborfields High School student, also attended the induction ceremony as part of the class of new inductees. National Honor Society executive board members approached the podium one by one for the candle ceremony. Members described

the significance of the candle, scholarship, service, leadership and character. The new inductees were called to the stage to receive their certificates and shake hands with Russo. Each student also received a candle from an executive board member before leaving the stage. Students, families and faculty gathered in the Harborfields High School auditorium to induct 121 students into the National Honor Society on September 28th. The National Honor Society (NHS) recognizes students that have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character. Inductees took their seats at the front of the auditorium and the Harborfields High School Choir performed the National Anthem. Principal Timothy Russo welcomed the crowd and praised the students for their accomplishment. “We are here tonight to celebrate yet another great achievement for these outstanding young men and women who have accomplished so much already,” said Russo.

Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and members of the Town Council invite residents to the Town’s Fifteenth Annual Women’s Networking Day and Awards Ceremony, which this year carries the theme “Relax, Reflect, Revitalize.” The October 20th event, under the auspices of the Town’s Division of Women’s Services, will include more than 50 booths, where experts will provide attendees with information, advice and demonstrations on a range of topics. It will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Larkfield, 507 Larkfield Road. Held under the auspices of the Town’s Division of Women’s Services, one of the purposes of the event is to increase the exposure of the Women’s Advisory Council, an association of prominent not-for-profit agencies that deal primarily with substantive women’s issues. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Set to Perform Members from the Northport High School Tour Choir have been invited to sing for the third straight year with Northport High School alumnae Patti LuPone at the John W. Engeman Theatre on January 23rd, 2017 and January 24th, 2017. The Northport Tour Choir will accompany LuPone in the twonight show titled “Don’t

to commemorate a birthday… the timely appearance of a nest of robin’s eggs… a rainbow arching over the sky… There are those who simply appreciate these occurrences as a token of nature at its finest and leave it at that. And then there are those who see it as representative of something far deeper, and more spiritual in nature. Sure, anything can be made to “fit,” if you are so inclined; but there are certain phenomena, if you will, that simply cannot be denied and leave you shaking your head in wonderment. Case in point: I recently found myself driving on Sunrise Highway, as I often

do, when I happened to focus in on the license plate of the vehicle in front of me. It read “RIP PAL.” For those who may not know, I recently lost my grandfather – my “Pal” – as I fondly called him, earlier this year. The odds of that particular combination of letters, traveling in front of me at that particular time, leading up to what would have been his 90th birthday this month… it was pretty mind blowing at the time. As soon as I was stationary, I quickly texted my mom to tell her about my encounter, still incredulous at the coincidence. No sooner did I get out of the car to head in to pick up dinner, when I was met with another “sign.” As I stood on line waiting to be helped, my eyes fell on the nametag of the girl behind the counter, one I had noticed there countless times

before. It read “Ventura” … my grandfather’s last name. Whether it was her first name, last name, I wasn’t certain. But it didn’t matter. What are the odds? Maybe it was just a coincidence. Two, in fact. Within the space of about five minutes. Both having to do with my grandpa. Perhaps just a stroke of luck. But, to me, it was a sign. Of what, exactly, I don’t know. But these subtle reminders of those who have passed on are around us always, if we only choose to pay attention to them. And I do, always. They say signs come to those who believe in them, those who are open to accept them for what they are – whether it provides a moment of comfort or brings to mind a happy memory. We can certainly all use more of those. Anxiously awaiting the next one...
