award is granted to high school athletics programs that illustrate exemplary effort in displaying overall sportsmanship to the game, as well as their opponents, coaches and referees. Mr. Dantuono said that each of the district’s varsity and junior varsity teams demonstrate sportsmanship by placing banners, promoting

positive play throughout the high school’s hallways. “We’re trying to promote strong character and commitment and really being respectful as a competitor,” he said. “Our kids are good kids. Our student athletes, they get it done.” Mr. Dantuono explained that districts are encouraged to apply for the award via an online

application, which is later reviewed by a state-wide committee to determine eligibility. He said that the Northport-East Northport School District stood out among the rest as it was recently recognized, for the second consecutive year, as a school of distinction by the athletic association. The honor is given to schools, whose

student athletes maintain an overall Grade Point Average of 90 or above. “That just added to our

resume to be eligible for the state-wide recognition that we received,” Mr. Dantuono said.

The Charity of the Month for October is: The Cemetery of Lost Souls (lostsoulsli.com) Benefitting Melissa’s Wish The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. E v e r y bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They rely heavily on devoted individuals and community support, as the actors and people who put on the haunt are volunteers. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The event will run on October 12, 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event.

You can benefit Melissa’s Wish in various ways. Of course you can attend one of this year’s Haunted House events (all proceeds will benefit this organization), you can donate on their website or you can become a sponsor of their

organization. Additionally, you can become involved with the Cemetery of Lost Souls in many ways. They are actively looking for volunteers in the following areas: Digital Marketing (to help with social media marketing), Scare Team Members (actors to help put on the event), Security (watching over the event and making sure all guests are safe), Bake Team Members (to donate baked goods to sell at some of the events) and lastly, they are looking for an Electrician (to volunteer a few hours to help finalize last minute details for the event). Volunteers must be 16 years of age and volunteer time can count towards community service hours! Sponsorship opportunities are also available. This organization is looking for local businesses to sponsor the event. All sponsors will be listed on their website and will be given the opportunity to have their logo and or a small clip on a big screen at the event in front of the waiting line. This will be on a loop, so there is lots of exposure to be had! Lastly, donations are welcomed at any time on their website. East Northport Middle School Principal Pat DeStefano and Assistant Principal Angelo Cocchiola visited social studies classes on Sept. 10 to inform students of their rights and responsibilities. Rather than hold a school-wide assembly, as was done in the past, Mr. DeStefano said that the school switched more than 10 years ago to deliver the message in a more personable approach. He said that by visiting each class, students have more opportunities to ask questions and get to know their principals. The administrators focused on topics such as, respect, social interactions, expectations and school behavior. Additionally, they urged each of the students to get involved in after school activities. ‘These are the things you’re going to remember,” Mr. DeStefano said. Mr. Cocchiola also walked the students through the school’s code of conduct and student handbook, both of which can be found on the district’s website. Once logged into their Google accounts, students can also access an online form by clicking the “ENMS Bully Box” link to report or share concerns regarding misconduct. To close their presentation, Mr. DeStefano left the students with a quote from Henry Ford: “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t—you are right.” Stressing the importance of how a person’s attitude determines their success he said, “Things are not always going to be easy, but you have to continue to be true to yourself. If you do that, you’re going to persevere and succeed.”

Students and staff at James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District celebrated International Dot Day on Sept. 16. International Dot Day Inspires Students

Musicians Play A Different Tune

The Harborfields High School Jazz Band was fortunate enough to welcome four awardwinning jazz musicians from South Africa on Sept. 16. Students spent the morning learning aural traditions under the instruction of pianist Bokani Dyer, trumpeter Lesedi Ntsane, bassist Benjamin Jephta and drummer Kesivan Naidoo, who taught the students to play South African standard songs like “Mannenberg,” “Inner Peace” and “Wicked

Whispers.” The quartet then performed for the school’s band and orchestra, imparting musical history and culture lessons along the way. Those lessons transitioned over to Michelle DaSilva’s Advanced Placement world history classes, where the musicians discussed apartheid — a South African policy of segregation — in the postapartheid era. The musicians were members of a South African Jazz retrospective

that recently performed at the Lincoln Center in New York City, marking the 25th anniversary of democracy in South Africa. “It was truly a one-ofa-kind experience,” Music Department Coordinator and Jazz Band Director Dan Bilawsky said. “To be able to explore South African music, history and culture with some of these musical leading lights leading the way proved to be an unforgettable experience.”

Harborfields Music Students Noted For Outstanding Performances Six Harborfields High School students will have the chance to perform at the NYSSMA All-State festival in December. The students— Evangelea Andreadis, Hope Lusby, Jennifer Mittelman, Ty Ellenbogen, Angeline Miraglia and Everett Borman—were selected as some of the top students to perform a level six solo for a NYSSMA adjudicator last April. In doing so, four of them were selected to travel to Rochester

from Dec. 5 to Dec. 8 to participate in a weekend of rigorous rehearsals that culminate in a final concert at the Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre. The remaining two were selected as alternates and will be eligible to participate if another student is unable to attend. More than 7,000 students compete statewide each year for selection to NYSSMA All-State. This year, approximately 900 students were chosen and

will perform with one of eight All-State ensembles, according to Music Department Coordinator Daniel Bilawsky.
