No matter how you slice it, picking a college is the culmination of your high school career. As a senior, the pressure associated with selecting where I will spend the next four years of my life is truly right around the corner. I’m almost done with all of my tests, essays and applications, but even if I receive that acceptance letter in the mail, how do I know where I truly want to attend? After acceptances, denials and waitlists, a student is still left with the daunting task of finding out which college truly fits him or her. There are many factors that play into choosing
where you would be the most happy. Are you an athlete? A study freak? A party animal? Countless variables can have an impact on both your social and psychological well being. Before you enroll in that Ivy League school, take a look around, because you may feel the urge to select a school that actually wants you. For instance, if a school of lesser prestige is offering you a scholarship, you might feel the urge to go there instead of a top tier college. Before you enroll anywhere, make it a point to visit! If you can, check out the prospective
college because, for all you know, you could hate it. If visiting is not an option, at least talk with a current student or alumni. No one can give you more insight than someone who is already in that situation. Attend a College Night! On October 2nd, St. John’s hosted its annual College Fair, with nearly 200 present. Showing up to one of these not only gives you a broader glance at many universities, but the up-close and personal time with an Admissions officer can be priceless. Feel it out, because this decision is undoubtably the most important one you will make thus far.

Music For Life Fundraiser Some of New York City’s best DJ talent will come together at 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 13th, at FOUR Food Studio & Cocktail Salon in Melville to help raise money to benefit “Team Galluzzo,” a charity dedicated to raising awareness and providing financial relief for cancer patients and their families. Music For Life was established in 2012, and for the first time in history, some of the most famous DJ’s in the NYC club scene, such as Victor Calderone, Hector Romero, Jonathan Peters and Grammy Award Winner Hex Hector, came together to raise money for industry families who were fighting cancer. Due to the event’s tremendous success, the Music For Life team is committed to making this an annual event. This year, “Team Galluzzo” has joined
forces with Music For Life to raise money for a fellow DJ and industry alum, Jeff Galluzzo and his family. Jeff, a 46 yearold, non-smoker, has been fighting Lung Cancer for the last four years and was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 while in training for a triathlon. Since then, Jeff has had numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, underwent four surgeries, one of which removed his right lung. Just two weeks ago, Jeff’s doctors informed him and his family that the cancer is now terminal and that there is nothing more they can do. Given the amount of daily care he requires, his fearless wife Jodi has been by his side, day and night, taking care of his every need. As you can imaagine, the hardship this family has endured mentally, physically and financially is
incredible, and yet they still soldier on with a positive attitude and unwavering determination. Jeff is a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend and just an overall incredible person. Suffolk County Legislator Lynne C. Nowick, Chair of the Legislature’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Committee, recently met with Kathryn Curran, executive director of the Suffolk County Historical Society, to discuss the Society’s goals and upcoming projects. Since it was first settled in 1640, Suffolk County has experienced a rich history. The Society is working diligently to establish itself as one of the major anchors for downtown Riverhead by positioning itself as a bookend of the planned main Street cultural corridor linking the other art venues, theater, historic district and other points of interest. “The Suffolk County Historical Society contains a wealth of history, documents, artifacts and collections. It is a gem in the Riverhead community and a must visit destination for all of Long Islanders,” said Suffolk County Legislator Lynne C. Nowick

The Winnebago is handicapped accessible and outfitted with handson archeological and local cultural displays. The Society’s upcoming exhibit, Back to the Future, features contemporary artists’ work, which reflects elements of the Society’s permanent collection. This fall, the Gold Coast Arts Center will present the 3rd Annual Gold Coast International Film Festival (GCIFF) from October 21st to 27th. Everyone’s invited for another round of fantastic films, parties, panels, and fanfare. Since GCIFF’s inception, the festival and year-round film series have successfully brought the latest Hollywood hits and Indie favorites to the North Shore of Long Island-along with A-list celebrities and unforgettable events. GCIFF has quickly gained the reputation of the “go to” Festival as it’s the last major Festival on the East Coast before award season. This year, greater Long Island will become “Laugh Island” as The Gold Coast International Film Festival (GCIFF) shines a spotlight on Comedy with a program of films and events with legendary comedians, writers and actors. Susie Essman (HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm) who will be honored at this year’s Opening Night Benefit Gala, Joe Piscopo (NBC’s Saturday Night Live), Eddie Griffin (Norbit), Jackie (The Joke Man) Martling (formerly of The Howard Stern Show) and Paul Provenza (The Aristocrats) who will bring to the Festival his world famous, star-studded presentation of “Set-List, Stand Up Comedy Without a Net.” Comedy Writer/ Producer Jeffrey Gurian, known by everyone in the comedy world, is Exec. Producing the live events for the Laugh Island program. Other highlights of the film festival will feature focuses on Women in Film, Israeli film and films for GCIFF’s annual Heroes theme. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is holding its 16th Annual Youth Waterfowl Program, open to young hunters on Long Island ages 12 to 15, on November 2nd and November 9th and 10th, Commissioner Joe Martens announced today. The program is a collaboration with the New York Conservation Officers Association; Suffolk County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation; Shikar Safari Club International; Ducks Unlimited; and South Shore Waterfowlers Association. The Youth Waterfowl Program, an instructional course, is set for November 2nd. Youth Waterfowl Days, which are specially designated hunting days, are set for November 9th and 10th. The Youth Waterfowl Program is a special event
to help junior hunters prepare for and participate in the Youth Waterfowl Days. The program includes instruction in: · Hunting ethics and regulations · Waterfowl identification · Firearms safety review · Retriever and decoy use · Cold water survival and boating safety · Trap shooting Certified sportsman education instructors, as well as DEC environmental conservation officers (ECOs), will guide participants through the program and help youth hunters become part of the long tradition of waterfowl hunting on Long Island. All new applicants must attend an instructional day at Hubbard County Park in Flanders on November 2nd, which will qualify them for the option of hunting at Hubbard County Park in Flanders or Southaven County Park in Yaphank on November 9th,

Waterfowl Program and anywhere hunting is allowed on November 10th. Participants must be 12 to 15 years of age by November 9th, have completed a hunter education course by November 2nd, possess a junior (small game) hunting license by November 9th and be registered with the Harvest Information Program (HIP). Moving Right Along By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Commuting. Whether by train, plane or automobile, it has the potential to be tedious, inconvenient and highly frustrating. For many years, I was fortunate to have a very short drive to work, bypassing Long Island’s fine highways and parkways – and all the joys they bring. (Yes, that was sarcasm.) This last year has more than made up for it. Case in point: Just the other morning, I was cruising on the Southern State when I passed one of those helpful overhead signs alerting you to any traffic
delays you might encounter up ahead. “Traffic Moving Well” it said. Wonderful. A few exits later, dead stop. No flashing lights, no sirens, no accidents in sight. Inching along, but why? Oh but there it was, way up ahead, the unmistakable orange cone – construction. Three lanes merging into one – no warning, no signs, not a human worker in sight… just a flashing arrow instructing the cars miles up ahead to start moving over. Perfect. Of course, even in such a situation when clearly no one is going anywhere fast, don’t think the drivers’ level of courtesy increases by even
the slightest bit. No, the vast majority of Long Islanders would rather speed up to the bumper of the car in front of them than let another vehicle merge in between. And so we wait, vainly attempting to pick a safe spot to sneak in. And so a 25-minute commute turns into 45 for no justifiable reason. Two lanes closed, an endless line of orange barricades… but no workers, no work underway, nothing. Just chaos and confusion and road rage of the most uniquely New York variety. Good thing we have those trustworthy overhead signs to guide the way.

Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone joined Council Members Mark Cuthbertson and Mark Mayoka, other public officials, family and friends September 29th in dedicating Field Number 4th at Mill Dam Park in memory of John M. “Muggs” Gerardi, whose involvement with Huntington softball spanned three decades as a player, manager, organizer and president of the Huntington Men’s Softball League. Mr, Gerardi, who died in January at the age of 64, was a Vietnam War veteran who was active at the Northport Veterans Administration

Hospital and in veterans’ concerns. He worked in the construction trades, in real estate and as a restaurant owner; most of his working life was spent as a member of the Cement Masons. Mr. Gerardi played softball in the Town for 33 years. His teams included Orange & White Taxi, Neighborhood Bar, Cracker Box Pub, Mugg’s Place and Mugg’s Mutts. After he stopped playing, he managed championship Division I teams. His teams won championships in 1983, 1984, 1985, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2011. He also served as president of the Huntington Men’s Softball League.
In July, the Town Board voted to dedicate the field in Mr. Gerardi’s memory. The resolution dedicating the field (sponsored by Councilman Cuthbertson) noted that he was a “fixture on softball fields throughout Huntington, dedicating untold hours to organizing and scheduling thousands of games for his players.” The resolution also called him “an outstanding player, coach, manager and league organizer” and a “champion of protecting the rights and interests of his players and a strong advocate of fair play and sportsmanship.”

The Fall Wildlife Festival will take place at the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center, located within the West End of Jones Beach State Park, on Saturday, October 19th and Sunday, October 20th, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year’s festival theme is: Water: Every Drop Counts. The day will include a variety of water-themed children’s activities and displays from the Amateur Observer’s Society, Friends of the Hempstead Plains, Long Island Sierra Club, the U.S. Coast Guard, The Nature and Science Center of Long Island, Project Hope and the Science Museum of Long Island. Come see Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center’s resident animals, such as box turtles and an American Kestrel, as well as a variety of animals from Volunteers for Wildlife that will be on display. The vehicle use fee of $8 will be in effect, unless you have a valid Empire Passport. There is no admission fee into the Nature Center. Northport Historical Society announces Northport Heirloom Antiques Weekend, a three-day celebration of treasures from long ago, from November 1st to 3rd. The weekend will feature a cocktail reception, an appraisal day, and the Society’s annual Antiques Show. Getting things started will be a “Meet the Appraisers” cocktail reception on Friday, November 1st. This event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the main gallery of the Society’s museum. Lark Mason of “Antiques Roadshow,” Weston Thorn of Litchfield County Auctions and Jean-Paul Napoli of South Bay Auctions are the evening’s special guests. Reservations are required for this event and may be made by calling the Society
at 631.757.9859. The cost is $35 per person. At the Society’s “Antiques & Art Discovery Day” on Saturday, November 2nd, Mssrs. Mason, Thorn, and Napoli will evaluate one or two treasures brought by the attendees. This event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Northport Village Hall, 224 Main Street. Items will be evaluated at a cost of $25 each. Those interested in getting an appraisal are encouraged to contact the Historical Society to reserve a spot within a specific time block. Participants with reservations will be given priority; all others will be seen as time allows on a first come, first served basis. The Society’s annual Antiques Show, the final event of the weekend, will be on Sunday, November 3rd, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
at the William J. Brosnan Building, 158 Laurel Avenue, Northport. Now under the management of Susan Oates, this muchanticipated event is a favorite among antiquers, collectors and designers. Admission to the show is $8 per person (discount cards for two at $7 each are available from the Society’s museum and at local businesses). Also new this year is an “early buyer option,” available for an additional $20, which allows admission to the show beginning at 9 a.m. As in past years, the Society’s Museum Shop booth will beckon to collectors of both the serious and the whimsical. A large number of new donations and consignments have been set aside for exclusive sale at this year’s show.

For the second consecutive year, the Town of Huntington is partnering with the League for Animal Protection to offer free spaying or neutering of pit bulls and pit bull mixes owned by Town residents during October, which is Pit Bull Awareness Month. Last year, 55 residents took advantage of the offer, visiting the Town Animal Shelter on Deposit Road in East Northport with proof of residency. They were given vouchers to be taken to a participating veterinarian, who performed the procedure. “We were pleased with the
program’s success last year, and are happy to partner again with the League for Animal Protection, which has worked with the Town at the shelter to increase awareness of how adoptable pit bulls can be and to work with the pit bulls and pit bull mixes at the shelter to make them more adoptable,” Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said. The League, in a flyer it has been circulating about the program, cites a number of reasons for spaying or neutering pets, including: · Spaying a female helps prevent uterine infections
and breast cancer, which is fatal in about 50 percent of dogs · Neutering a male dog prevents testicular cancer · A female won’t go into heat and a neutered dog is less likely to mark his territory · A neutered male won’t want to roam away from home to find a mate, making it less likely someone will lose their pet · A neutered male may be much better behaved · Spaying and neutering helps thwart pet overpopulation For more information, contact the shelter at 631.754.8722.

Teacher Recognized At its September 26th business meeting, the Elwood School District’s Board of Education recognized Matthew McGuire, a technology teacher at Elwood Middle School. Mr. McGuire secured a grant last year from the Toshiba American Foundation to purchase equipment for technology students to use in developing skills in design fabrication. For his efforts in implementing this technology within the classroom, Mr. McGuire was recently recognized in the national publication
“Tech & Learning.” The article, written by Ellen Ullman in the June 25, 2013 issue, was titled “What to Do with It – Best Practices from GrantWinning Districts.” With the grant he secured, Mr. McGuire has taught his students how to use computeraided manufacturing and a computer numerical control router system to design and manufacture toys that are later donated to local children. In addition, Mr. McGuire volunteered much of his time over the summer to help convert
a technology room at the middle school into a STEM room. According to Principal Dr. Hugh Gigante, “Mr. McGuire is an incredible asset to the middle school staff. He is a quality educator who has contributed so much to our program for the students’ benefit.” At the meeting, Mr. McGuire provided the Board of Education with a brief overview of what he has in store for his students this year, including building maglev model vehicles and constructing projects using snap circuit electronic kits.

A cooperative effort among Business, Government and E n v i r o n m e n t a l Organizations will bring a demonstration rain garden to the grounds of the Cold Spring Harbor Library and Environmental Center this Fall. Funded primarily by a grant from the Scott Paper Company, the garden will serve to catch and retain storm water runoff and return it to the soil, while providing an attractive focal point near the Library’s entrance off route 25A in Cold Spring Harbor. Brian Zimmerman, District Manager of the Nassau County Soil and Water Conservation District, explains: “Much of Long Island’s storm water flows through storm sewer systems into ponds, streams and harbors, carrying with it silt, nutrients, bacteria and chemicals, all of which are harmful to the native plants and animals in the water - including, at times, humans. Rain gardens filter out much that is harmful and return the water to the ground, rather than the ocean.” Working with the Library on the project are: The Soil and Water Conservation Districts of both Nassau and Suffolk Counties, Oyster Bay / Cold Spring Harbor Protection
Committee, Friends of the Bay, and Main Street Nursery of Cold Spring Harbor. “In order to catch and clean runoff, rain gardens are depressed below grade, forming a shallow basin which will catch and hold water. Soils are layered to promote percolation and filtering, and the garden is planted with native species which can withstand being wet but thrive in dry conditions all the while contributing to the filtering process,” said Paul TeNyenhuis, Manager for the Suffolk County District and the designer of this garden. “The plant material was obtained from the Long Island Native Plant Initiative whose focus is the promotion and preservation of plants native to Long Island.” Informative signage is an important part of the garden installation. “We hope that this model will inspire our neighbors to create their own gardens at home,” says CSH Library Director Helen Crosson. “We are pleased and proud to add an attractive piece of ‘green infrastructure’ to our setting.” Rob Crafa, coordinator of the Oyster Bay / Cold Spring Harbor Protection Committee, cited this as an example of his committee’s efforts to promote cooperative
action throughout the watershed which feeds the two harbors, to protect the health and productivity of its waters. “We are especially grateful for Main Street Nursery’s help to create this garden. These public/private partnerships benefit everyone.” The site for the demonstration garden was selected for a number of reasons: its location at the foot of a steep grade, adjacent to the harbor, with high visibility from route 25A, and helping a library that serves parts of both counties. In addition, environmental education is a core element of the library’s mission. “Stormwater runoff is one of the primary routes for pollutants to enter our bay and harbor,” said Friends of the Bay Director Paul DeOrsay, “ even from properties quite distant from the shore. Rain gardens are an attractive and effective way to filter out the harmful elements before the water reaches the bay.” Plans are to have the garden completed by October 15th. Halloween Costume Parade Supervisor Frank P. Petrone, Councilman Mark Cuthbertson and the Town of Huntington are proud to sponsor the Annual Children’s Halloween Costume Parade starting at Gerard Street in Huntington Village on Thursday, October 31st at 4:15 p.m. Children of all ages (and their parents or guardians) are welcome to

Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center’s Annual Ball, An Evening At The Copacabana, was held Friday, September 27th at Crest Hollow Country Club. More than 400 guests joined the 2013 Gala Honorees, West Islip residents Lorraine and John Pace, well known throughout the region for their commitment in the fight against breast cancer. The Ball raised more than $425,000 to support The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation, with proceeds to benefit the Cancer Center at Good Samaritan Hospital. “Starting with the inception of the hospital’s Breast Health Center 20
years ago John and I have valued our relationship with Good Samaritan Hospital,” said Mrs. Pace. “We look forward to partnering with the hospital to provide outreach, education and programs for cancer survivors on Long Island through the recent alignment of The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation and our foundation Breast Cancer Help, Inc.” Good Samaritan has made a significant commitment to caring for the region’s cancer patients through the establishment of its multidisciplinary, comprehensive Cancer Center, where all of the pieces are in place
