Farewell To A Legend By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I first became a Yankees fan back in the fall of 1995, as the team made its first run at the postseason since 1981, with the legendary Don Mattingly at its helm. For the first time in my lifetime, I understood the magnitude of this storied organization. And then, just like that, the run was over. Mattingly walked off into the sunset, having never made it to a World Series. The end of an era. But there, waiting in the wings, was a rookie shortstop, destined to pick up the torch and run with it. And run he did, for the next 20 seasons, leading the Yankees to five World Championships
and racking up countless milestones along the way. Derek Jeter exemplified what it meant to be a true Yankee in an era when there were very few, if any, athletes doing things the “right” way, never mind in a city as unforgiving as New York. Much has been said, and written, over these last several weeks – really, throughout the past year, since Jeter announced his plans to retire at the end of the 2014 season – analyzing the legacy of the player, the upbringing of the man, his place in Yankees, and baseball, lore. To that, I can only add the following: while he may never have been the “best” in any one statistical category, as
relentlessly pointed out by rival fans and the national media, he was undeniably in a class by himself in the only categories that counted – dignity, sportsmanship, integrity… and, oh yeah, he had quite the knack for coming through in the clutch, when the stakes were the highest, the pressure the greatest. Not bad for an “overrated” player, right? Yankees fan or not, these last several weeks have been quite the emotional rollercoaster. An historic era in Yankees history has come to a close, the only one my generation has had the privilege to witness. And what a privilege it was.

Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center was recently awarded $39,000 as a beneficiary of the 2014 LI2Day Walk to Fight Breast Cancer. The Walk was organized to raise awareness and funding for the fight against breast cancer on Long Island with 100% of the proceeds awarded to grass roots organizations that serve its residents. Since

On pictures you want more likes, But what happened to fun and bikes? But we do these things to escape from stress And for a little escape from the mess.
Books and tests To a kid are just pests. Papers and projects Are as boring as the subjects.
But what does tomorrow bring? Another day being played by a string. You go back to work And remember everyone’s a jerk.
We all question why we go, But we really don’t know. We go because we have to, And sometimes we have to do what we have to do.

Movement Speaks STUDIO OF DANCE
Movement Speaks Studio of Dance recently opened its doors in Babylon Village, at 225 Deer Park Avenue. After having danced for 27 years and taught for nearly 15 of those years, partners Aileen Smisek and Megan Connell decided to take the leap and open a dance studio of their own. Movement Speaks offers classes for children from ages 18 months through adult levels. These include: Mommy & Me, Pre-School, Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Lyrical, Contemporary/Modern, along with a competition team training class. They also feature an award-winning competitive team, open to all serious dancers. Aileen and Megan’s choreography has been honored through the years with numerous prestigious awards at dance
competitions, both on the Regional and National level. Many of their students have gone on to dance in college and beyond. Aileen and Megan plan to involve the studio in upcoming community events such as the Babylon Fall Festival and the Old-Fashioned Night of Shopping. Also in the works for the coming year are a Zumbathon, a Mommy & Daughter Tea Party and, during the holiday season, a “12 Days Of Christmas” event where parents can drop their children off at the studio for a dance class and a special project while they shop locally in the Village. Movement Speaks looks forward to being an active member of the Babylon Chamber of Commerce, as well as the local community. Internet Safety Lesson From September 22nd through the 24th, students in third through fifth grade at Elwood’s James H. Boyd Intermediate School were educated on Internet safety. The lessons were taught through workshops that focused on personal safety and social responsibility required when using technology. In accordance with the age-appropriate curriculum “Common Sense Media,” students will participate in a total of five workshops throughout the school year, led by district
technology instructor Krista Albrecht. Elwood introduced this program, as part of a new digital media safety initiative for the 2014-15 school year, in an effort to instruct young students on proper digital media conduct. Aligned with New York State’s Dignity for All Students Act and bullying prevention curricula, the program will equip students with the knowledge to protect themselves and respect others in the digital world. As strong advocates of the new program,
Superintendent of Schools Peter Scordo and Boyd Principal Denise Toscano attended a third-grade Internet safety workshop, where they interacted with students and shared an important message about being a “digital citizen.” “Safety is so important, particularly when it comes to using digital media,” Scordo said. “Starting at a young age, we want to teach students how to use technology appropriately and safely.”

Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and Councilwoman Susan A. Berland welcomed the Huntington High School Class of 1964 to the Town of Huntington’s Vietnam Memorial on September 27th during a ceremony in which the alumni as part of their 50th reunion recognized classmates who served, including 24 whose names will be added to the memorial next year. In his remarks, Supervisor Petrone noted the contributions veterans from the class had made in serving our country and he acknowledged the Class of 1964 reunion committee, most notably veterans chair Lou Pagano, for its role in spurring the reopening of the wall for new names. Supervisor Petrone also thanked class member Eric Freedman, who donated money to help cover the cost of adding the names. Pagano spoke about
serving in Vietnam and its effect on veterans after returning home. As part of the ceremony, the Huntington High School Chamber Choir, under the direction of Veronica Manville, sang the National Anthem and God Bless America. The invocation was delivered by the Rev. Kirt Watkins and the benediction by Dr. Carol Deinhardt Cohen. Both are members of the Class of 1964. Originally unveiled in 2003, the wall currently lists the names of 1,112 Vietnam War era veterans who live or lived in Huntington. That includes persons on the original three plaques and those who were added in the subsequent five years before the wall was closed in 2008 and a fourth plaque was installed. Last year, representatives from the reunion committee approached Supervisor Petrone
about the possibility of reopening the wall to add names of about 20 of their classmates. The Supervisor determined that there was room for the wall to accommodate additional names and opened the wall for an additional period that ends December 31st, 2014. To date, there are 190 names that will be added, including the 24 from the Huntington High School Class of 1964. The dedication of the new list will be part of ceremonies marking the 40th anniversary of the war’s end in 2015. To be eligible, a person must have lived in Huntington for six months at any time in their life. An application form must be completed and a copy of the veteran’s DD214 submitted, along with a $15 donation to defray expenses. the K 98.3 FM Morning Show kept the crowd excited and energized as male and female models strutted down the runway in the latest fall fashions of Marshs of Huntington. The audience was inspired when Sueann Palmer, a UCP of Suffolk Employment Connection participant, shared her personal journey as a person with a disability. Sueann has struggled with learning disabilities for her whole life and has had challenges in holding down a job. She was referred to The Employment Connection to assist her in securing employment. She worked with an employment specialist who helped her with creating a resume, submitting applications and improving her interview skills. She has been employed for over a year and lives her “Life Without Limits” each and every day. “The fashion show was an absolute success,” Colleen West-Levy said. “The venue was beautiful; the models were great and the outpouring of love and support from the
friends of UCP of Suffolk has been amazing.” “Everyone has been extremely generous and supportive,” Kim Smith said. “We had wonderful raffle prizes donated, the support of great sponsors and a fantastic turnout.
