Weathering the Storm There are few things as unpredictable, and beyond our control, as Mother Nature. If the past few years have taught us anything, it’s that hurricane season is not to be taken lightly. Gone are the days of “what are the odds” and “it’s never happened here” … turns out, “not always in your favor” and “now it has” are the answers to such rhetorical musings. Of course, most forecasts are still met with a healthy dose of skepticism, even in these parts of the region where that kind of cynicism resulted in some pretty substantial regrets not so long ago. Meteorologists’ predictions, coupled with dueling “models” mapping
out the potential track of various storm systems does not an exact science make. As a result, the tendency is to ignore such warnings until the eleventh hour and simply hope for the best. The same goes for blizzards, heat advisories … any natural occurrence that might interfere with our daily lives. How dare something as trivial as weather affect our schedules. Until it does. And we are completely unprepared. I will fully admit that I am guilty of such dismissiveness as well. To me, unless I look outside and see it for myself, it’s not reliable information. I don’t see the point in inciting mass hysteria among the public based on a “hunch,” a “chance of” whatever. Show me rain and
wind and sleet and snow and blazing temperatures – maybe I’ll be convinced. Stupid? Sure, in those rare, extreme cases when the forecast is 100% accurate. But you won’t see me rushing out to buy milk and eggs and bread on a whim. Because guess what? When the power goes out, no one’s making French toast. The way I see it, owning a shovel, keeping your gas tank above empty and stocking a few bottles of water and some nonperishables isn’t the kind of thing that should be necessitated by an emergency warning. It’s just practical common sense. If you need a meteorologist to instruct you in those types of preparations, well then, the weather isn’t your biggest concern.

“Please help. I’m alone and scared. I don’t know where I am or how long I have. I never meant for this to happen. All I wanted was to hang out with my friends at a party. None of this was supposed to happen... Help.” Chapter 1 “Hey guys! I got this invitation to a ghost party... get your best white bed sheet out and get your party on!” I said to my friends over the phone. Emma responded “nice” and laughed. Joseph responded, “Got my sheet out and ready!” Alison responded with a laugh. Jonathan responded with, “Sure, if there is candy corn, I’ll be there!” and laughed. Ian responded, “Where is this party? And yes, definitely coming, just
wanna know!” “Ummm...it is on Maple Street...no definite address. We will find it. Gotta be the one with a bunch of cars, lights and music,” I said. They all responded with ok. “Meet me at my house in ten,” I said. Alison said, “Scare ya later,” and we all hung up to get ready. I didn’t want to wear a bed sheet because it seemed too old-fashioned so I put on an all-white outfit, black makeup on my eyes and half red, half black lipstick and some white shoes. My friends all arrived around the same time. We all said hello, got a quick snack before we left, got into my car and left for the party. Chapter 2 It didn’t take long to find the house the party was being
hosted at. We stepped in and were greeted by our host, Jackson. Jackson didn’t seem as normal as the rest. It was a pretty normal party - singing, dancing, eating, talking. But then something happened that changed all that. Jackson came up running toward us in what seemed like fear. After he ran past us, the lights started flickering. At first, we thought it was a joke. Everyone looked around for light switches and soon found out that the lights were fake lights that were put up as decorations for the party, and didn’t even have real light bulbs to light it up. At that time, everyone started to panic. Then a voice came out of nowhere. And then he came. And then IT came.

What do you get when you mix the skills of soccer with the joy of golf? Footgolf! And it’s here in Huntington. The Town of Huntington’s Dix Hills Park Golf Course became the first official Footgolf course on Long Island this week as this hybrid sport of golf and soccer was unveiled at the popular nine-hole course facility. “As an avid golfer and youth soccer coach, I am proud to announce that Huntington is the first on Long Island to offer Footgolf,” said Councilman Mark Cuthbertson. “This represents our continued commitment to providing new and enjoyable recreational opportunities for our residents.” Originally created in the Netherlands, Footgolf is quickly becoming a popular sport across the nation, drawing strong support and interest from children, adults and seniors. “The object is quite simple – kick a soccer ball into a special designed hole with the fewest kicks possible,” Councilman Cuthbertson
said. “However, it’s something easier said than done.” The Councilman commended the staff of Integrity Golf Co. for bringing the idea to the attention of the Parks & Recreation Department. Integrity is the management company overseeing operations at Dix Hills and Crab Meadow golf courses. “When we partnered with Integrity, we asked them to develop new ideas to enhance the playing experience while generating additional revenue to help offset our maintenance costs,” Councilman Cuthbertson said. “We’re thrilled to be sharing our first-class golf facilities with this fun family-oriented alternative game,” said Integrity Golf CEO Gene Garrote, whose Orlando-based company oversees 35 golf facilities in seven states. “I can’t wait to try it myself!” The game is played the same way as golf, except players use a regulation No. 5 soccer ball instead of a golf ball, and the ball is
kicked rather than struck with a club. Players begin by kicking the ball from the tee box, hopefully keeping it in play in the fairway. The object is to get the ball into a special 21-inch round cup, placed to the side and away from the regular golf greens, with the least kicks possible. Players are prohibited from walking on the golf greens or kicking a ball from the surface. Other rules are similar to that of golf. “This is a great opportunity for a family to enjoy an afternoon of fun and relaxation without having to invest in expensive equipment, lessons and training,” the Councilman said. “To score well, one has to carefully read the course, execute smart approaches and make accurate putts – just like my golf game.” The cost to play nine holes is $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures
than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should
probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Many doctors are learning more about this testing device at www. hologic.com.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $5,265 donation from 115 friends and family members in memory of Daniel Grym, 19 of Bellmore, who passed away from the effects of a heroin and benzodiazepine overdose on January 8th, 2015. Daniel’s older brother and only sibling, Kenny, passed away 5 years ago on the same date from a heroin overdose. With the heroin and opiate crisis raging, the demand for LICADD’s services has increased exponentially. Significant price drops in the street price of heroin on Long Island, have increased the number of young people who are using the drug. Calls to LICADD’s hotlines and requests for services mirror these increasing trends and beyond the sheer rise in numbers of
young people and their families seeking heroin addiction treatment services, the rapid progression from snorting to injecting the drug is startling and obviously increases the potential health consequences for users. This significant donation assists the Long Island community by providing additional services for families in desperate need of LICADD’s services. A counseling office in LICADD’s Executive offices in Mineola will be named in memory of Daniel at a private dedication with close family and friends. “We are very grateful to LICADD for the good work they offer. The family and friends of Daniel hope that this dedication will help to raise awareness about the dangers of heroin and direct individuals to LICADD for help.” says

People concerned about breast cancer are now able to chat online with a social worker or breast cancer survivor through a new service offered by the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The Adelphi program, the oldest breast cancer hotline in the country and located on Long Island, has been providing emotional support and information to New Yorkers for 35 years. Says program supervisor
Recently, Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco played host to a large contingent of officials from the New York City Department of Correction and Riker’s Island, New York City’s main jail complex. The group visited the Suffolk County Correctional Facility to learn more about DeMarco’s correctional programs – in particular, the award winning Council for Unity and Youth Tier programs. This is the second time that Riker’s officials have come to the jail in the past year. Commissioner Joseph Ponte and members of his staff visited Riverhead last September to discuss correctional reforms. The visit comes at a time of heightened focus on issues related to crime reduction strategies and prisoner rehabilitation, and Ponte’s well-publicized goals to implement changes at Riker’s Island to help reduce violence. According to DeMarco, the goals are intertwined. “One of the lessons we have learned is that if your focus is reducing inmate violence, you need to have programs in place to combat gang activity. Programs like Council for Unity encourage these youth to drop their colors and many of them continue to stay connected with the Council once they’re released. Ultimately this is what it’s all about. We want to transition these kids back into the community and help them lead more productive lives. The jail is safer, the community is safer, and in the long run the taxpayers benefit because they don’t have to foot the cost of these youth cycling in and out of jail and prison,” said DeMarco.
Commissioner Ponte stated, “We are pleased to have this opportunity to learn about these groundbreaking programs from Sheriff DeMarco and his Office and are eager to apply their insights to help reduce violence in our facilities. DOC staff has traveled to many jurisdictions in order to absorb best practices in our drive to become a national leader of correctional reform, especially in regard to adolescents and young adults.”
Sheriff DeMarco implemented Council for Unity at the Suffolk County Jail shortly after he took office in 2006 in an effort to reduce gang violence in the Riverhead Jail. It was the first correctional facility to embrace the program, which was developed by Robert DeSena nearly 40 years ago as a method to reduce gang-related crime in New York City schools. During their visit, the group met with some young inmates, between the ages of 16 and 21, as they

Following the presentation, DeSena stated, “Sheriff DeMarco has made it a priority to reduce inmate violence and quell gang activity both inside and outside the correctional facility. Council for Unity is a proven methodology for diverting youth and adults from gangs, but also in regard to preventing future delinquency. I think the corrections community has now seen the effectiveness of this approach and they want to implement Riverhead’s model program.” The County Sheriff has been at the forefront of a national trend towards developing effective inmate rehabilitation programs and coordinating communitybased services for individuals reentering our communities after spending time in jail. Due in part to these efforts, there has been a significant decrease in the county jail population since he first took office. In 2005, the daily jail population averaged close to 2000 inmates, and now that figure is less than 1400. In 2011, Sheriff DeMarco launched the Youth Tier and Youth Reentry Task Force Initiative to improve outcomes for incarcerated youth in the county jails, and the award-winning program has become a national model in the field of corrections. He also serves as the Chair of the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council where he has been working to improve coordination across the law enforcement continuum.

Fire Safety Program Long Island McDonald’s will team with Nassau and Suffolk County fire departments to emphasize the importance of home fire safety. On October 1st at 11 a.m., participants will gather at the Nassau County Firefighters Museum & Education Center on Charles Lindberg Boulevard in Garden City, where Ronald McDonald will present 250 Kidde Worry-Free 10-year sealed lithium battery smoke alarms and 50 carbon monoxide (CO) alarms to the Nassau and Suffolk County Fire Marshals. The alarms are donated by Kidde, a leading manufacturer of residential fire safety products. Additionally, throughout October a worksheet about EDITH (Exit Drills in the Home) and a home “Hazard Hunt” will be distributed to children; those who complete the worksheet will be rewarded with a Long Island McDonald’s meal certificate. During Fire Prevention Month, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office urges
everyone to make time for fire safety. A moment spent now could make the difference in an emergency. Families should develop and practice a fire safety plan and fire survival strategy along with an exit plan and meeting place outside their home. “Be sure all family members know what to do in the event of a fire, or any emergency that may require you to exit your home quickly. Check your home for fire hazards, correcting them as you do. Install, inspect, and test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in your home. Be fire safe…be fire smart,” says Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano. “In a fire, every second counts,” said the Firefighters Museum’s Chief Instructor John Murray. “Roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported at night between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when most people are asleep. Home smoke alarms can alert people to a fire before it spreads, giving everyone enough time to get out.” “Kidde is proud to partner with Long Island

BREAKING GROUND - Suffolk County Community College (SCCC) officials gathered recently in a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Health and Wellness Center on the school’s Eastern Campus in Riverhead. Two Weeks Left to File Two weeks remain for National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) insurance policyholders to submit their Hurricane Sandy Claims for review by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The last day to submit claims is Thursday, October 15th, 2015. NFIP-certified insurance adjusters are currently reviewing more than 15,000 Sandy flood claims, looking for any instance of underpayment. Where warranted by the review, additional payments are being made to policyholders who suffered losses from the storm. “If you believe your Sandy flood claim was underpaid for any reason, we are ready, willing and able to take another look. But we can’t review your claim unless you ask us to,” said Roy Wright, FEMA’s Deputy Associate Administrator for Insurance and Mitigation. Getting started is as simple as making a telephone call. Policyholders can contact the NFIP’s Hurricane Sandy claims center at 866.337.4262 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), Monday through Friday, to request a review.
To be eligible for the review, policyholders must have experienced flood damage between October 27th, 2012 and November 6th, 2012 as a result of Hurricane Sandy and must have had an active NFIP flood policy at the time of the loss. When policyholders call, it is helpful if they have available as much information as possible, including the name on the policy, the address of the damaged property and the ten-digit NFIP policy number that was in effect at the time of the loss. Policyholders will be asked a series of questions to determine whether they qualify for the review. If qualified, they will be called by an adjuster to begin the review. The timing of this call may be affected by the volume of requests. Most reviews can generally be concluded within 90 days. Policyholders also can go online to www.fema. gov/hurricane-sandynfip-claims to download a form requesting a review. The downloaded form can be filled out and emailed to FEMAsandyclaimsreview@ fema.dhs.gov or faxed to 202.646.7970 to begin the review process. For individuals who are deaf,

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development recently announced that flood insurance proceeds up to $20,000 resulting from the Sandy Claims Review process will not be treated as duplicative, and will not be recouped by HUD or its grantees. To date, approximately three out of four NFIP claimants in the review process have received that level of additional compensation from FEMA and will not face any possible repayment of HUD-funded grants. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
