Services provided include educating cancer patients, caregivers and the medical community on the benefits of incorporating exercise into the treatment regimen and its effect on reducing the risk of certain cancers and re-occurrences, along

by the Team and Family of World Gym Wantagh. Over $50,000 was raised by this generous community, and the sponsors of the event. In the past three years, the Wantagh World Gym has held this event and chose Strength for Life as a beneficiary with the total raised over $110,000. Strength for Life relies on our fundraising events to provide these services and World Gym Wantagh relieved a heavy burden during these years. This year, each of the 92 riders was asked to fundraise $350 for the event and nearly all exceeded their goal. The energy at Mulcahy’s was palpable as the riders entered, claimed their bike, bought raffles and prepared for the experience. Barbara Larrea, on center stage, led the riders on a fantastic journey, combining her heartfelt, inspiring

with improving bodily functional activities. Programs are conducted by certified cancer exercise specialists in a group setting and held at 11 accessible locations throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. Over the past seven years, SFL has reached more than 1,700 patients and survivors. World Gym Wantagh hosts classes twice a week, and they are forever grateful for the beautiful room and welcoming staff. Many survivors are initially intimidated to go back into the gym environment. Their intent is to empower them to embrace the “new normal” and feel confident enough to go back to their previous activities. Learning of the astronomical copays of a cancer diagnosis and how it can make it financially

difficult for many to work with a personal trainer, Strength for Life has tried to eliminate all the barriers – travel, equipment, cost and qualified cancer exercise specialists.

They are truly blessed to have been introduced to Ms. Larrea, World Gym Wantagh, and the scores of people she inspires to support the cause, Strength for Life.

Northport-East Nortport School District officials gathered at Northport High School on September 24th to induct the newest class of athletes into the Athletic Hall of Fame. Family, friends, administrators and coaches attended the morning event to honor the newest inductees and celebrate their accomplishments. Superintendent of Schools and Northport High School alum Robert Banzer said he was pleased to be a part of the ceremony and see his teammate Alan Squeri and neighbor Kyle Dowd be inducted. “Congratulations to all the inductees,” Banzer said. “Thank you for all you’ve done for Northport High School.” Hall of Fame President Bob Brady recognized the 1991 Rutgers Cup Champion football team for their accomplishments and spoke about the team being inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame. “There have been many other teams, terrific teams that have come out of Northport High over the years,” said Brady. “But there has been only one Rutgers Cup Champion out of Northport High School and that’s the boys from 1991.” The team lined up in the front of the room and each

up seat to the game with a tent at the end of the field. Halftime provided a variety of entertainment for the community to enjoy. Fresh from performing at Citi Field on September 23rd, the Northport Tiger Marching Band, featuring the Tigerettes and Flagline, performed “Tigers Through The Decades” with a medley of songs. The Sparkle Squad, made up of members from the Tigerettes and community, executed a dance routine for the crowd and the new

Northport Hall of Fame inductees were revealed to the public. Homecoming court nominees took a jeep ride around the field followed by a special guest appearance from Northport High School alum and Paralympic Gold Medalist Mikey Brannigan. Brannigan waved to the crowd as they cheered. Homecoming ended with the Northport Tigers winning the football game against Central Islip 46-8.

Hall of Fame Class member received a plaque and a shirt. One by one inductees were introduced by important figures in their lives, including coaches, siblings and friends. The athletes spoke about their careers and experiences at Northport and many addressed special

teammates and friendships that they acquired while being a student athlete. Included in the lineup of new inductees was John Ross, a graduate from Northport High School in 1963. Ross was the first gymnast to ever be inducted into the Northport Athletic Hall of Fame and was emotional

about the recognition. “I’m truly honored to be included with all of the other inductees,” Ross said. “I think it’s terrific to promote sports and I think all of us are very lucky to grow up in this town and have such a program.” After the ceremony, inductees attended Northport High School’s homecoming football game and were provided with special seating in a white tent at the end of the field. During halftime, each inductee was announced to the community. On Saturday, October 8th at Jones Beach, Outreach and the John Brower, Jr. Foundation will host the 2nd annual 5K Walk to raise funds and awareness about substance and alcohol abuse in New York, bringing the community together while walking for a cause. The event honors the memory of John Brower, Jr., who died in 2014 of an

opiate overdose at age 25. Proceeds from the walk will support Outreach, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping teens and adults fight drug and alcohol addiction. The Brower family formed the John Brower, Jr. Foundation to heighten awareness about substance abuse and to help raise funds to end the drug epidemic that has had

Welcome to October, the month when thoughts turn from late summer sunshine and seaside walks to apples and pumpkins and all things autumn. ‘Tis the season before THE season of holiday madness, that lull when – aside from Halloween – one can simply enjoy the crisp air while taking a hay ride with friends, navigating a corn maze or picking up some local produce at the neighborhood farm stand. Personally, I am a girl of summer, basking in

the glow of sunsets and days spent at the beach, of aimless wandering along our many shores in search of hidden oases of beauty. But autumn has its own special unique charm as well. There is nothing quite like feeling the crunch of freshly fallen leaves under your boots, of cuddling up with a good book and some hot apple cider donuts. This is the time of respite, that period of transition from long golden days to chilly evenings, the calm before the storm of feasting with family, of decking the halls

and shopping ‘til your heart’s content, for loved ones and yourself. Come November, its full-steam ahead, and the novelty of the season tends to wear off a bit amidst the chaos. Now is the time to treasure. So take October, enjoy. Take in the foliage, absorb your surroundings, snap a few photos for your autumn album, catch up with old friends over coffee – do whatever it is to soak in the season while it’s here. A Sea of History Every year, the Huntington Town Clerk’s Archives, under the direction of Town Clerk Jo-Ann Raia, presents an exhibit featuring a part of the Town’s history. The 2016 exhibit, “A Sea of History - Our Maritime Heritage,” will highlight the industries that flourished around the Town’s harbors and explore topics such as pottery, brickyards, whaling, shell fishing, shipbuilding, transportation and marinas.

The exhibit consists of manuscripts and images from the Archives and artifacts on loan from the Huntington Historical Society, Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum, Huntington Public Library and a private collector. In observance of Archives Month 2016 the Archives will install phase II of our exhibit highlighting sailing and yacht clubs that exist in Huntington according to Ms. Raia. Participating clubs are: Centerport Yacht Club, Head of the Bay Yacht

Club, Huntington Beach Association, Huntington Yacht Club, Ketewomoke Yacht Club, Lloyd Harbor Yacht Club, Masthead Cove Yacht Club and Northport Yacht Club, The exhibit can be seen on all floors of Town Hall and will remain on display until December 2016. Blue Ribbon School U.S. Secretary of Education, John B. King, Jr., announced today that Harborfields High School has been named a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School. Schools are nominated for the award by the State Department of Education, and then complete a comprehensive application about school practices. Pickleball is a racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis and ping pong. The court is the size of a badminton court, and the rules are a cross between

While there are a number of tennis courts on Long Island that have been striped for pickleball, including two at Whitman Park, the new Whitman Park courts are among the very few set up just for the sport, relieving the tension between tennis and pickleball players. Many tennis players do not like to have pickleball lines painted on the tennis courts. And pickleball players wanted courts of their own. The project was completed by Town employees from the Highway and General Services Departments at a minimal cost. Supervisor Petrone thanked Highway Superintendent Peter Gunther, Parks and Recreation Director Don McKay and Deputy General Services Director Keith Barrett for their efforts in spearheading the project.

KITCHEN TAKEOVER - Teenagers from The Chai Center’s CTeen chapter in Dix Hills took over the kitchen at the Center on September 22nd to cook enough meals for ten families who are facing health issues - coping with a sick parent and/or child. The teens peeled, chopped, boiled and baked for several hours creating a festival meal, ensuring these families have a joyous feast during the upcoming Jewish holidays. CTeen, the fastest growing Jewish teen network in the world, inspires and facilitates teens who want to give back to their community and environment.

Petrone, joined by Councilmen Mark Cuthbertson and Eugene Cook and players from across the Town, officially opened the Town’s first dedicated pickleball courts at Whitman Park September 27th. The four courts were constructed by Town employees in a former rollerblading area of the park, on New York Avenue just north of Northern State Parkway, after the Supervisor met with residents of the Greens at Half Hollow, a large over55 community near the park, who had asked for courts specifically for their sport, whose popularity is increasing. “Everybody wants pickleball now. It’s really starting to grow,” Supervisor Petrone said at the official opening of what he called the Huntington Pickleball Center. The Supervisor traced the sport’s roots from its

Hometown Hero Students at Northport Middle School had the special opportunity to hear from 19 yearold Paralympic Gold Medalist Mikey Brannigan on September 23rd. Brannigan, who graduated Northport Middle School in 2011, competed in the 2016 Paralympics in Rio di Janeiro and won gold in the men’s Paralympic T20 1500m race at the beginning of September. Brannigan received a warm welcome at Northport Middle School, as students and staff greeted him by waving

American flags. Students then took pictures with the gold medalist. In the school auditorium, Brannigan provided a special question and answer session for the school’s eighth-graders and encouraged students to always do their best. Brannigan also described his track experience as a student at the school. He explained how he would set personal goals for himself and thanked former classmates for the support he received. “I looked up to my classmates and that really helped me,” he said.

Principal Timothy Hoss is proud of Brannigan and appreciative that he was so generous with his time at the school. “It was wonderful to have him in our midst again,” he said. “Anyone who has been in the presence of this fine young man is immediately taken by his kindness, zest for life and commitment to excellence. Wine Under the Stars The Huntington Historical Society couldn’t have asked for better weather on Thursday, September 8th, at their 26th annual Evening of Wine Under the Stars, honoring Huntington-based Hoffman Grayson Architects. The event, which raised over $55,000 of vital funding for the Huntington Historical Society’s operating budget, was attended by over 500 people and broke records in both attendance and fundraising records. As the Society’s signature event and premiere fundraiser, they rely on the Evening of Wine Under the Stars each year to provide much needed support. Every year the proceeds from the event go directly to the operating budget, allowing the Society to continue to maintain their museums, present new exhibits, create unique and engaging public programs, and care for and keep accessible to the public their vast Collections and Archives. The event was held on the grounds of the 1795 Dr. Daniel Kissam House at 434 Park Avenue in Huntington. The grounds, however, had been transformed into an elegant and unique space where guests ate, drank, and danced, not quite under the stars, but outside under the tent ceilings adorned with illuminated gold stars hanging down, and at tables with beautiful centerpieces from Martelli’s Florist and The Funky Flower Shop atop them. The historic barn was overflowing with raffle baskets and silent auction items, all wrapped and beautifully presented, and sure to have had something for everyone! Ladies Drink Free filled the night with their intoxicating music, and guests

played a Giant Jenga under a tree, or toured the house museum and the exhibit Wedding Days and Nights. It was a truly a fun, different and wonderful night! All of the food for the evening was donated by BeeOrganics, Black & Blue Seafood Chophouse, Bon Bons Chocolatier, California Pizza Kitchen, Christopher’s, Crew, Fado, Honu Kitchen & Cocktails, IMC Huntington, Jeff’s Surf & Turf, Kerber’s Farm, Mr. Sausage, Reinwald’s

Bakery, The Culinary Studio, The Shamrock, TOA Asian Fusion, and XO Wine and Chocolate Bar. Fine wine for the evening was donated by Bottles & Cases and Joanina Wine Shop, and the craft beer was given by Blind Bat Brewery. In addition, coffee was donated by Starbucks. Hoffman Grayson Architects has earned a reputation for rehabilitation, renovation, and preservation of historic buildings. In the last ten years, the firm has

been responsible for some of the most public historic renovations in Huntington - the John W. Engeman Theatre in Northport Village, The Paramount in Huntington Village, and of course, they are the architects of the exciting design for the Society’s Trade School Restoration and Archives Expansion project. Executive Director Claudia Fortunato-Napolitano said, “We are truly excited to have recognized a firm with such a unique perspective and understanding of Huntington and Long Island’s history.” The Huntington Historical Society has spent over 100 years protecting and interpreting more than 350 years of Huntington history; all of which is available at their Genealogy Library, Research Center, and Archives Collection. The Huntington Historical Society maintains five historic buildings and runs several public programs relating to local history, including walking tours, lectures, cemetery tours, trivia nights, tide mill tours, as well as the Apple and Sheep to Shawl Community Festivals. In addition they host educational programs at both our Kissam and Conklin houses, as well as a summer camp for elementary aged children called Passport to the Past where children learn what it was like to live in colonial times. The Huntington Historical Society shares it’s collections with the community by mounting rotating exhibits in the exhibit room at the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Building, and by loaning items in the collection to other organizations.

Public Lands Day Bellerose Avenue Elementary School students celebrated National Public Lands Day on September 23rd by taking a nature hike at the Veterans Nature Study Area and Barbara Frost Trail in the Town of Huntington. National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest single-day volunteer effort to enhance and improve

public lands. All grade levels participated in the hike and were provided with a guide from the Town of Huntington Department of Planning and Environment. Students learned about ecosystems and rocks along the way. “The purpose of our hiking tour is to raise awareness of public land

resources we have right in our own backyard,” said Principal Lori Beekman. Students walked the trail for 30 minutes as a class and took notes about what they encountered. “It was so fun,” said fourth-grader Matthew Munson. “My favorite part of the hike was seeing the big rock.”
