Fans from around the world are planning to attend L.I. Who 5, Long Island’s Doctor Who convention, at the Hyatt Regency Long Island on November 10th-12th, 2017. Now in its fifth year, the convention will celebrate 54 years of Doctor Who in television, film, comics, audio dramas, novels and more. Doctor Who fans will have the opportunity to meet their favorite actors, attend discussion panels, cosplay their favorite characters, and more. A full-size screen accurate TARDIS will be on hand for photo opportunities. Waris Hussein is the Guest of Honor this year. Hussein directed the first ever Doctor Who serial “An Unearthly Child” as well as the missing classic story “Marco Polo.” His contributions to the early years of Doctor Who were featured in the 2013 movie “An Adventure in Space and Time”. Along with Hussein, the legendary Frazer Hines returns. Hines is famous for portraying the classic companion Jamie McCrimmon during the Second Doctor era. He’s also the inspiration for the main character in Diana Gabaldon’s “Outlander” series. L.I. Who 5 celebrity guests include Ingrid Oliver (Osgood); the beloved Seventh Doctor, Sylvester McCoy. McCoy also starred in Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit”. Lalla Ward (Romana II) making a very rare U.S. convention appearance at L.I Who 5; John Leeson, the voice of the Doctor’s faithful robot companion K9 will also be attending; and Michael Troughton, actor and son of the Second Doctor Patrick Troughton. Actress Katy Manning (Jo Grant) returns. One of the operators of the Daleks, Barnaby Edwards, will be appearing along with replicas of the Doctor’s arch nemesis.

NYSSMA scores across Suffolk County. Selected students will take part in three intensive rehearsal sessions that culminate in a concert on November 17th at 7:30 p.m. at Hauppauge High School. NYSSMA All-State is based on NYSSMA scores and how those scores compare to other students at the same level across the entire state. The seven students who were selected as All-State musicians will travel to Rochester from November 30th-December 3rd to participate in intensive rehearsals, culminating in weekend concerts at the Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre. “These students are the best of the best. They are extraordinarily disciplined and they’re incredibly deserving of this recognition,” Music Department Coordinator Daniel Bilawsky said. “Their achievements are a testament to their hard work and the guidance they receive from their music teachers.” 2017 NYSCAME AllCounty Students • Melanie Bautista -
Town of Babylon Councilman Tom Donnelly recently visited Half Hollow Hills High School East to congratulate students who were named semifinalists for the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. Councilman Donnelly commended the students for their hard work and commitment to academic excellence.
To be named a semifinalist in the program, students must score in the top 16,000 of the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test participants. If the students are named winners of the program, they will receive funding to help further their education after graduating high school.

Odds & Ends So begins year two of the great “unretirement” from dance, as I dusted off the old tap shoes yet again and made my way back to the studio of my childhood once more. There is something to be said for recapturing your youth, however recent it may have been. In some ways, it is even better the second time around, as we all seem to have a newfound appreciation for the respite it provides from daily life. It is important for everyone to discover their own outlet, whether it be in the form of mental or physical release, as we each have our share of stresses to contend with. Sometimes, isolating a simple moment to take a deep breath and collect your thoughts is all that is needed. Other times, an hour spent unwinding while reading a few chapters of a book, listening to a record or even vegging out in front of
the television is an ideal way to decompress. With that, the new fall tv season is upon us, providing hours of entertainment to choose from, or randomly flip through, as the case may be. It’s funny, but back in the old VCR days, I would painstakingly plan out my viewing schedule, determining which shows to watch live, which to record, sometimes on multiple devices. Now, with the advent of DVR, I record almost everything, preferring instead to fast forward through the commercials. Of course, with this, you run the risk of having particularly popular plot lines “spoiled” for you on social media, due to everyone’s incessant need to instantaneously offer a running commentary on just about every aspect of life. What ever did we do before Twitter, I wonder? Speaking of, rumor has it

that the social media giant will be doubling the character limit of its Tweets, a piece of “news” completely irrelevant to most people; yet somehow, it has dominated the news cycle of late. Sometimes, concise is the way to be. No need to elaborate. The more space we have, the more we tend to ramble on… and, well, you know… But I digress. As October sets in, and perhaps with it a bit of autumnal weather - not that I’m complaining about the Indian summer we have been enjoying - hopefully everyone will take advantage of the fall festivals, apple and pumpkin picking and Halloween festivities happening from one end of the island to the next. Or perhaps a simple stroll through the changing leaves is more your speed. If so, might I suggest a pair of tap shoes? It does tend to lighten the mood. Happy October everyone!

If you worked on-site at the lab for 250 workdays between 1947 and 1993 for Associated Universities, the AEC/DOE, or a subcontractor, or were a researcher living on-site at Brookhaven National Lab, and were later diagnosed with one of 23 specified types of cancer, I will help you, or direct survivors, get a six figure entitlement award. Awards range from $150,000 to $400,000, and include worker medical benefits, including home health care. This is a taxpayer funded entitlement for DOE workers/survivors. It involves no liability to any employer and is not a lawsuit. Since 2007 I’ve done this nationally for 3,000 sick DOE workers or their survivors. I have helped more than half of the 928 paid BNL families receive their cancer awards. Non-cancer respiratory and renal disease cases are also possible. Let me ask a few simple questions. Spray Park Set The Town of Huntington, in a program attended by local officials, community members, representatives of the New York City Police Department and a Harley Avenue Primary school kindergarten class, announced September 25th that it will build a spray park at Elwood Park in memory of slain NYPD Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo. The decision to construct the spray park, which will be in a 2,500-square foot park area and have 1,600 square feet of active play features, followed discussions with Sgt. Tuozzolo’s widow, Lisa, over what would be an appropriate memorial to her husband, and included her input as well as representatives from the NYPD. In addition to the spray park features, the area will also have a shade structure, six park benches, a fourfoot vinyl coated chain link fence and a memorial trellis naming the spray park. Sgt. Tuozzolo was fatally shot last November 4th, when he and a group of officers were responding to a report of a disturbance in the 43rd Precinct in the Bronx, where he worked for the last 10 years of his career. They believed they were responding to home invasion, but it turned out to be a domestic incident. A dispatcher told responding units that the man who had broken into the home left in a car that was located about six minutes later. Police, including Sgt. Tuozzolo, approached the vehicle. The suspect opened fire and shot Sgt. Tuozzolo in the head and upper torso and another officer in the leg. Sgt. Tuozzolo died of his injuries. The suspect was subsequently killed by a police trainee. Sgt. Tuozzolo, a 19-year-NYPD veteran, grew up in Bayville, but moved to Huntington with his wife, Lisa, and were raising their family here, in a neighborhood not far from Elwood Park. “It’s a neighborhood park. It’s a park he visited, and his children visited,” Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said at the ceremony announcing construction of the park. Speaking of Lisa Tuozzolo and sons Austin and Joseph, Supervisor Petrone said, “We talked about creating a memorial that would be meaningful to her and to her two sons. We of course are saddened by the tragic incident that cost Paul his life and we hope that this spray park will be a place where Austin and Joseph can come and relive their fond memories of their dad and know that all of us will remember the sacrifice he made while trying to keep us safe. This spray park will be
a testament to the exemplary way Paul Tuozzolo led his life, as a police officer, as a husband and as a dad.” Councilman Mark Cuthbertson said, “Thank you, Lisa. You really are a pillar of strength. We look up to you… This is a continuation of Paul’s legacy.” Councilwoman Susan A. Berland said, “The Town has really come together to help Lisa and her family. This is the whole Town of Huntington that is here for you, to support you and your family, and this spray park will be a testament for generations to come. It’s going to teach
youngsters about the police and about the qualities it takes to be a police officer.” Councilwoman Tracey A. Edwards said, “I am very saddened about how we arrived here today, but what I can tell you is that I am not surprised about the outpouring of support from the police officer’s family, from the NYPD, from the Suffolk County Police Department, from the Elwood community and the Town of Huntington. This is what we do. We support each other.” Councilman Eugene Cook was unable to attend, but sent his best wishes to the family. Rep. Thomas Suozzi spoke to the members of Austin’s kindergarten class who attended the announcement. “It’s important to know that you are witnesses today to something that will be here forever. We need to tell the story for the future, that Sgt. Tuozzolo is a hero. And this park is being named after him because he is a hero, and we hold up heroes as people who we want to emulate, people who have made a sacrifice on our behalf.” Suffolk County Police Commissioner Timothy Sini said, “Sgt. Tuozzolo died a hero, he was a fine member of the NYPD. He was also a loving father who cared for
his children. To dedicate this park for Sgt. Tuozzolo is a perfect tribute.” Speaking for the NYPD and its commissioner was Chief Larry Nikunen, who worked with Sgt. Tuozzolo in the Bronx. “We have a phrase in the NYPD that we never forget. We never forget the members of our department who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. It is something that is very sacred to us as members of the NYPD...It is also important that people outside the NYPD understand what kind of man, what kind of officer Sgt. Tuozzolo was. That’s why the NYPD is extremely grateful to Supervisor Petrone and the Town of Huntington that they are creating a lasting monument for Sgt. Tuozzolo out here in Elwood Park.” Last to speak was Lisa Tuozzolo. “Paul and I lived here for almost nine years, but thanks to the support we have received from this community, it feels like we have lived here a lifetime,” she said. “Those we knew, as well as strangers, have been by our side and supported us and I appreciate all of them…His last years of his career, at the 43rd Precinct, focused on the safety and wellbeing of children and their schools in the Bronx. His passion for children did not end and the end of the work day. The two most important children in his life were his sons, Austin and Joseph, and the moment he walked through the doorway upon returning from work, our home lit up as bright as the sun from the smiles on everyone’s faces. The preliminary cost estimate for the project is $450,000. A good portion of the funding will come from money paid by the developer of the Seasons at Elwood as part of its community benefits agreement. Other funding will come from the Town’s Park Improvement Fund. The plan is to complete the design over the next few months, begin construction in March 2018 and have it completed by the beginning of next summer.

National Merit Semifinalist Harborfields High School recently announced that senior Emma Johnston was named a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship program. In order to be eligible for this achievement, students must take the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test, which
1.6 million students take each year. Johnston took the test last October and her score placed her within the top 16,000 students nationwide. To compete for one of the final 7,500 National Merit Scholarships, students must score well on the upcoming SAT and continue their dedication
to academic excellence. “I’m so honored to qualify for this opportunity. I think it’s a testament to the great education I’ve had the privilege of receiving,” Johnston remarked. “I’ve had some fantastic teachers over the years, and I’m so grateful for their support.”
Uke Can Do It Students at Pulaski Road Elementary School in the Northport-East Northport School District recently had the opportunity to play the ukulele — many for the first time. Music teacher Cristen Salisbury kicked off the lesson by showing students in David Kaiser’s fifth-grade class the basics of holding the instrument, how to strum the ukulele and the correct amount of pressure to apply to the strings. Several years ago, the district purchased six
classroom sets of ukuleles as a result of their high demand in the Summer Music Program. Teachers discovered that in a short amount of time, students were able to learn five to six chords, which comprise 50 percent of the American songbook of folk and popular music. “Learning these chords help students to unlock some of the mysteries of music composition by empowering them to write their own music,” said Dr. Izzet Mergen, Director of
Fine and Performing Arts. After learning the basics from Ms. Salisbury, students praticed strumming the strings as if flicking water off of their hands and forming different chords to create beautiful tunes by the conclusion of class. “It’s such a great opportunity to get kids interested in playing an instrument, especially if they’ve never played one before,” said Ms. Salisbury.

Heart Walk a Success They walked for Long Island friends and neighbors, they walked for family members and loved ones, they walked in honor and in memory of the close to 9,600 people on Long Island that die each year from cardiovascular diseases and stroke – Long Island’s No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death.
