Art Expression Program ADRC’s Executive Director and CEO, Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, announced today that twenty-seven sites across Nassau and Suffolk will participate in the Center’s 2013-2014 Art Expression Program developed for individuals with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease. ADRC has been coordinating this very special program since 2003. The program includes training for professional

coordinators, with ongoing support throughout the program year. The program culminates with ADRC’s Annual Tea and Art Exhibit where the paintings created by the Alzheimer’s artists are on display. Family friends and relatives are invited to the Annual event, and the event is open to the public. “It is always amazing to see the completed artwork because in many cases our Alzheimer’s artists are

unable to verbalize but are able to put their thoughts, feelings and emotions into their artwork,” states Ms. Malack-Ragona. On Sunday September 22nd, Giant Step Services of Hauppauge held their second annual Circle For A Cause fundraiser to benefit Strength for Life raising $2,720 for the non profit. Strength for Life provides FREE exercise classes and wellness retreats for cancer patients/survivors on Long Island. Giant Step Services is a community based comprehensive vocational/independent living program for postsecondary students with learning challenges located in Hauppauge. The Giant Step program is designed to maximize

each young adult’s growth by utilizing supportive, individualized approach to movement from home or boarding school to community and work or post-secondary academics. The students went above and beyond reaching out to family and friends and walking laps to show their support of the Strength for Life programs that promote “fighting cancer with exercise.” Their sponsorship was matched by Ms. Lauri Alpern and Mr. Dave Finkelstein of Giant Step Services. This is truly a blessing for Strength for Life.

For every $300 donation a cancer patient/survivor is sponsored for a wellness retreat participating in an overnight stay, a day full of classes (Zumba, Tai Chi, Yoga, Strength Training, Reiki and Meditation) and fabulous guest speakers presenting on alternative therapies and nutrition. Giant Step Services sponsored nine new survivors to attend a wellness retreat in 2014. Kudos to all the walkers! Members of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) recently donated their services to Head Start Early Childhood Development Program. Five members of the Professional Organizers of Long Island (POLI) contributed their skills and services to reorganizing a storage room at Head Start’s Hempstead location. The room houses program supplies, books, and donated clothing for preschoolers three to five years old and their families. The certified professional organizers worked on this handson project alongside new Director, Cagney Wilson who recently arrived at the

facility. NAPO’s pro-bono organizing project for Head Start included rearranging shelves, sorting hundreds of pre-school books, toys, and clothing and provided storage alternatives in addition to labeling the contents of the room. They also assisted in reorganizing the Director’s office. “Now staff can easily access the items they need without searching through unmarked boxes and bags,” explains Diana Soll, owner of Grand Solutions LLC in Roslyn Heights and Past President of NAPO’s NY chapter. “Now we know where everything is and are able to manage the inventory

much more efficiently than before. We can now start the school year knowing where everything is!” says Wilson. The National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) is a non-profit professional association with more than 3600 members worldwide. Its mission is to develop, lead and promote Professional Organizers and the organizing industry. Caregiver Classes Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center will be hosting Powerful Tools for Caregivers, a six-week course new to the Long Island region. Classes will meet on consecutive Wednesdays from October 16th to November 20th, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the hospital’s Administrative Conference Room. This series gives caregivers the skills and confidence to better manage their own well-being, while assisting loved ones. Caregivers will be taught how to reduce stress, improve self-confidence, better communicate feelings and locate helpful resources. Attendees will also learn how to increase their ability to make tough decisions and balance their lives. Bay Restoration More than 50 friends of Stony Brook University’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) took part in the 1st Annual Clams For Clams Fundraiser on September 7th to support its Shinnecock Bay Restoration Program (ShiRP), launched with a $3 million gift in 2012 from the Laurie Landeau Foundation and the Simons Foundation. Proceeds from the event will develop five new clam spawner sanctuaries in the Bay, which have been proven to increase water quality and control harmful algae while strengthening the clam population. Event co-chairs Roz and Richard Edelman, and Maureen Sherry and Steve Klinsky, both of Southampton, NY, hosted the event at Stony Brook’s new Marine Sciences Center at the University’s Southampton campus, raising more than $55,000 in tickets and sponsorships to fund five spawner sanctuaries. “The water here is like nowhere else, whether you like to simply look at it, paint it, play in it, or make your living fishing it,” said Maureen Sherry Klinsky who with her husband Steve funded two clam spawner sanctuaries. “I don’t want to look out across Shinnecock Bay 20 years from now, the tipping point, and wish I’d done something.” Research by Stony Brook’s School of Marine and

Atmospheric Sciences faculty shows that increasing the clam population in Shinnecock Bay can reinvigorate this fragile ecosystem. What makes the ShiRP project unique is its emphasis on collaboration among all stakeholders: area residents, Southampton Town Trustees, local

fishermen and even other community non-profits. In fact, the Peconic Baykeeper also donated a clam spawner sanctuary at the fundraiser. “The study of marine and atmospheric sciences is vitally important if we as a society are to find viable solutions,” said SoMAS Dean Minghua Zhang. “We have

The Annual Paws for Parkinson’s “Howl-O-Ween Dog & People Walkathon” will take place at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa. This annual event is presented by the American Parkinson Disease Association (“APDA”). The goal is to raise money for Parkinson’s research. Registration starts at 11 a.m., and the walk starts at 12:30 p.m., rain or shine. Registration fee is $25, and each registrant at the event receives a T-shirt while supplies last. The headline has been used countless times by every media outlet imaginable to commemorate the retirement of a living legend, New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera. But it’s fitting. So very fitting. Yankee fan or not, as we have seen over the last few weeks – the entire season, really – there is no one who can deny the pure talent, the class and dignity with which this man played the game for 19 seasons. In city after city, members of opposing teams eagerly lined up to honor a pitcher the likes of which this game will never see again. Plaques and gifts were presented, generous donations were

Of course, no one does pomp and circumstance quite like the New York Yankees themselves. I was fortunate to be a member of the sellout crowd who turned out for the team’s official sendoff to the Sandman, on Sunday, September 22nd, 2013. What an amazing display of affection from the team, past players, managers, coaches – and the fans, who seemed to not want the opening ceremony to end. The last player to ever wear the #42 had his number retired alongside the greats in Monument Park, surrounded

by the family of the original #42, Jackie Robinson. Metallica entered the field to perform the “Sandman’s” selfappointed theme song live, as Mo ran out to greet the members of the former World Championship teams who lined the diamond. It was perfect, just like Mariano had been so many times before. What a priceless memory, up there right along with the countless classic moments he had helped orchestrate throughout the years. Nineteen seasons – pretty much the entire duration of my time as a baseball fan. That’s an absence that’s pretty difficult to get over. Baseball, quite simply, will never be the same for me. Thanks for the memories, Mariano. #42 Forever.

even more anxiety provoking. The eight of us found ourselves recollecting a week that served as the highlight of our summer and the spark for our patriotism. For me, staring at all of my heroes was truly a test of both my resolve and my public speaking abilities! We were in the presence of the people

that make our great nation run. Without the officials who were present, our society would be nothing. After giving my speech, I returned to the seat beside my mother and trembled at the thought of the journey I had just finished. My road with Boys’ State has come to an end, but my pride in our country has just germinated. At the end of the night, I received a Congressional Certificate of Merit, a Proclamation and a multitude of other awards; but mostly, a sense of American Patriotism. I would like to conclude by thanking American Legion Post 1738, the political figures who give me the hope for a greater nation, and the men and women who have given their lives for the United States of America.

On September 24th, eight boys and girls were awarded several honors for attending and excelling at Boys’ State and Girls’ State. I am proud to say that I am one of these eight. From the moment we walked into Post 1738, we were greeted by men in ties with our national colors. The podium was even emblazoned with an American pattern. The event started with a prayer, pledge and the reservation of a chair in the corner for those who remain missing after all of America’s combat. a fellow DJ and industry alum, Jeff Galluzzo and his family. Jeff, a 46 yearold, non-smoker, has been fighting Lung Cancer for the last four years and was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 while in training for a triathlon. Since then, Jeff has had numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, underwent four surgeries, one of which removed his right lung. Gala 50 Celebration The Huntington Arts Council is proud to announce the five musical artists performing at the upcoming “Gala 50,” a 50th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, October 5th at 7 p.m. in the Founder’s Room at the Paramount in Huntington village. Huntington Supervisor Cocktail or “Gatsby” attire Frank P. Petrone and is requested. Councilwoman Susan A. Berland announce the completion of a project they had been working on with South Huntington School district officials to make crossings safer for Birchwood Intermediate School students crossing Wolf Hill Road. At the request of the school district, Birchwood Intermediate administrators, the school’s Parent-Teachers Association and local residents, the Town “pinched” the road at two Wolf Hill Road crossings. That shortened the

distance between curbs, improving pedestrian safety by making the crossing shorter and traffic safety by forcing vehicles to slow down. The Town also installed Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacons at the Birchwood School crossing. When activated, the beacons alert motorists that someone is about to cross, improving safety by making motorists aware of potential pedestrian conflicts. Supervisor Petrone and Councilman Berland were joined by their colleague, Councilman Mark Cuthbertson, earlier this week in demonstrating

the two traffic calming measures for school officials and local residents “We are happy that the Town was able to identify and implement measures that will address the district and resident’s concerns, making crossing Wolf Hill Road safer for residents and students,” Supervisor Petrone said. “I want to thank the community for their input and the district for working with us to address this traffic situation,” Councilwoman Berland said. “I am pleased that we were able to implement these successful measures.”

Northport-East Northport Public Library Director James Olney presented Bellerose Avenue Elementary School Principal Lori Beekman with the 2013 Summer Reading Club Achievement Award on Wednesday, September 25th. Bellerose Avenue Elementary achieved the Summer Reading Club Achievement Award

by having the highest percentage of their student body participate in the Library’s 2013 Dig Into Reading Summer Reading Club Program. The plaque, engraved with Bellerose Avenue Elementary School’s name, will remain in the possession of the school which, of course, will have bragging rights for the entire school year.

Students, staff and community residents of the Harborfields Central School District gathered in late September for the district’s annual homecoming celebration. The high school held its annual pep rally and bonfire on September 20th, capping a week full of spirited activities that had included a dodgeball tournament, the HF Idol competition and the traditional homecoming dance. Among spirited performances by the varsity cheerleaders and kickline, seniors Carli Clementi and Tanner Morrow were crowned homecoming queen and king, respectively. The “family” celebration carried into the next day for the annual homecoming parade and football game. The parade featured class floats decorated to the theme of “Save the Music.” The freshman

class portrayed a ’50s sock hop, while the sophomores colorfully decorated their float to the theme of reggae music. The junior class took a Western approach with a country theme, and the seniors rocked it out with a rock ’n’ roll float. In addition to the parade taking on a musical theme, the homecoming celebration was tied in with the Save the Music charity. Each class planned numerous fundraising events to support the nonprofit organization, whose mission it is to restore instrumental music education in the nation’s public schools and to raise awareness about the positive impact that music has on a child’s educational career. Following the parade, the Harborfields Tornadoes football team took to the field against Deer Park. The varsity cheerleaders, marching band and kickline

kept the momentum going throughout the game, and a halftime “dance competition” among the grades drew many laughs and cheers from the crowd. While the team was ultimately defeated, the spirit and energy of everyone in attendance could not be dampened. According to Harborfields High School Principal Dr. Rory Manning, “The numerous activities flawlessly planned and executed by our student government and leadership students brought our high school family together in so many ways. Moments like these are what bind our school community together, creating a sense of belonging that is so essential to the academic success and social development of our students.”

Donations to the American Red Cross after Superstorm Sandy have led to clear signs of progress and hope through New York and New Jersey 11 months after the storm. As of September, the Red Cross has partnered with and funded numerous communitybased organizations to

support the recovery of individuals and families affected by Sandy. The American Red Cross has awarded a $60,000 grant to The Disability Opportunity Fund to support longterm recovery services for people with disabilities and their families affected by Superstorm Sandy. The Disability Opportunity Fund (The DOF) will use the grant to help 50 families develop housing solutions and navigate the rebuilding process for their homes. The services will include individual counseling, assistance in locating possible properties, and advising on rehabilitation to make dwellings handicap-accessible on Long Island over the next 12 months. The DOF is a community finance organization based in Nassau County. “We are thankful for this grant from the Red Cross,” said Charles D. Hammerman, president and CEO of The Disability Opportunity Fund. “The resources will enable us to continue to provide assistance to people with disabilities, and their families, many of whom still have unresolved issues

Two students from semifinalists in the 2014 William Macci and Keith Harborfields High National Merit Scholarship Mills were among the top School have been named Competition. 1 percent of 1.5 million students who entered the competition by taking the PSAT exam last October. As semifinalists, William and Keith are among the highest-scoring entrants in the state. They will now have the opportunity to continue in the competition for one of approximately 8,000 National Merit Scholarships to be awarded in the spring. Marine Of The Year

Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone recently recognized William Ober, commandant of the Huntington detachment of the Marine Corps League, who was named 2013 Marine of the Year at the New York State Marine Corps League Convention. Under Mr. Ober’s leadership, the Huntington Marine Corps League Detachment #792 is one of the most active on Long Island. In addition to having

the detachment perform services for funerals, details, and parades, Mr. Ober has promoted other activities such as visiting schools to talk to students about the Marine Corps, spearheading drives for wounded warriors and helping in fund raising and support for two of the local wounded warriors. He also supports the Boy and Girl Scouts and a scholarship fund for students. At the September 17th

She also uses her skills in her free time volunteering as a missionary in Honduras helping build homes and provide medical assistance and works with underprivileged young women at Madonna Heights helping them get the help they need to stay on course.

them to navigate instead of visual aids. Check nav lights and flares. Make sure that your boat’s navigation lights are in working order and your emergency flares are not past their expiration date. Carry a couple of waterproof flashlights onboard to help you unload passengers and gear at the dock or boat ramp after dark, and be sure to stock spare batteries. Make sure your VHF is working. During the fall, the waterways are less crowded. While this is peaceful, it also means that if you run into a problem, you might not see another boater. You can use your VHF radio to call for help even in spots where your cell phone has no signal. Use Sea Tow’s free Automated Radio Check system to ensure the radio is working properly – to find the right VHF channel for your area, visit www. seatow.com/boating-safety/ automated-radio-checks. Gas up before you go. With fewer boats on the water, some fuel docks may close early during the fall season. Don’t assume you can fill up at your destination for the return trip home.

Wear a life jacket. In the autumn, as water temperatures start to fall, boaters who accidentally fall overboard run an increased risk of hypothermia. While children under 13 must wear a life jacket when the boat is underway by law, it’s a good idea for adults to wear them, too – especially at night. Purchase life jackets with lights attached so rescuers can find you in the water. Make sure they fit over your bulky “fall layers” – jackets, sweatshirts, etc. If you don’t have a life jacket, you can borrow a life jacket for free from one of the 160+ Sea Tow Foundation life jacket loaner stations. Find one near you at www. boatingsafety.com. Keep a “weather eye”. Autumn storms can approach swiftly, and often seem more menacing than summer rain showers. Autumn’s arrival doesn’t mean the boating and fishing season has to come to an end. Quite the contrary! Most anglers will tell you that some of the year’s best fishing occurs in the fall, and boaters agree that leaf-peeping while slowly cruising through calm, mirror-like waters takes on an almost ethereal quality. However, the arrival of fall’s shorter days and colder temperatures does require boaters to take some extra precautions in order to ensure a safe and enjoyable outing for all. With this in mind, the Sea Tow Foundation, a nonprofit organization created to promote boating safety, offers the following six tips for boaters and anglers who go out on the water this fall. Update your charts. Local aids to navigation like channel markers and buoys placed by local authorities may be pulled as early as October in some areas. (NAPSI)—Adopting a pet, whether it’s a giant dog or tiny kitten, is a big decision that requires a lifelong commitment—but when you find the right fit, adopting a pet also provides a life full of love. For example, when Mayling Zhong and Chester Leung visited a PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend event, they knew there were many factors they needed to consider before adopting a pet. “We knew that our small apartment needed a small dog,” said Leung. The two met several dogs before stopping at Smokey. Just 4 months old, the terrierminiature pinscher mix was a little excitable in his crate when he arrived, as many puppies are. As the day went on, however, Smokey calmed down and seemed smart and eager to please. His fun-loving personality (and small size) convinced Zhong to adopt him-she knew he would be the right fit for her and Leung. Within minutes, the couple was filling out the adoption paperwork and they were ready to welcome the new pup into their home. Pet Points To Ponder If you’re considering adoption, here are a few

things to keep in mind: 1. Space: Do you live in an apartment or a house? Do you have a big backyard? Different types of dogs and cats require different amounts of exercise and space. Zhong and Leung knew they needed to take into consideration the size of their home as part of their decision to adopt. 2. Time: Decide how much time you can dedicate to caring for a dog or cat. Cats can be more independent and often require less time for daily exercise. 3. Children: Make sure you are aware of the pet’s temperament. A shelter worker may be able to say how a pet gets along with children. You might even consider creating a special area in your home just for your pet, so he has a safe place to go if children are running around the house. 4. Resources: Ensure that you have the appropriate resources to care for a pet. Creating a budget for things like food and veterinary care is a good place to start. Adoption is a commitment for the pet’s entire life. One easy way to find adoptable pets and shelters is by searching PetSmart Charities’ adoptable pet locator. You can enter

Don’t Let Dry Mouth Become A Health Hazard

(NAPSI)—If you or anyone you care about is among the majority of Americans who have stopped or wanted to stop taking a prescribed medication due to side effects, there could be good news. Some common side effects can easily be treated with over-the-counter products. According to a new survey by Wakefield Research, nearly one in three adults has completely stopped taking a medication because of side effects like dry mouth. Some 50 percent of Americans are on a prescription drug of some sort and more than 400 common medications can cause dry mouth, including overthe-counter cold remedies and antihistamines, antidepressants and commonly used medications for high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and high cholesterol. When you take more medication, you increase the risk of dry mouth. You have a 35 percent increased risk for dry mouth when you are on three or more medications. Dry mouth sufferers often don’t notice they have a problem until their saliva flow has already dropped by 50 percent. Here’s how

to tell if you’re among the millions affected: Dry Mouth Checklist • Do you take one or more medications daily? • Does your mouth usually feel dry? • Do you regularly do things to keep your mouth moist? • Do you get out of bed at night to drink fluids? • Does your mouth usually become dry when you speak? If you answered “yes” to one or more of these questions, you may have a problem with dry mouth. More About Dry Mouth Also called xerostomia, dry mouth affects approximately one in four adults, especially women and older people. If left untreated, it can cause even more oral health problems such as cavities. Dry mouth increases the likelihood of tooth decay by approximately three times because of the lack of saliva that naturally protects teeth and gums.
