Customer service. It’s a thankless job, to be sure. But for those of us on the other side of the phone, it can be downright maddening. Over the course of the last several weeks, I have had the good fortune of being in touch with representatives from three major companies and one federal agency. As polite as the majority of them have been, there is simply no substitute for good oldfashioned efficiency. From poor line conditions that make it sound as though you’ve been patched through to another planet, to computer screens that keep
“freezing,” necessitating the dreaded May I put you on hold for 5-7 minutes? request, it does make you wonder how any issues are ever resolved. What always gets me is the directory, which instructs you to select your issue and what department you would like to speak with; yet, once you actually reach a human after “longer than normal wait times,” they never seem to know what your call is in reference to. And after repeated calls, and numerous notations on the account in question, it would stand to reason that you shouldn’t have to re-explain the entire problem from the beginning. And yet…
I try to be patient through it all, telling myself it’s not their fault that they work for a completely inefficient organization. They simply have a job to do, as we all do. Flipping out never sped the process along. At the end of one of these service calls, which stretched over approximately three hours (yes, you read that correctly), the woman on the other end actually took the time out to thank me, saying my patience showed a lot about my character. Well, if dealing with customer service builds character, I think I’ve reached my quota for quite a while!

The American Red Cross Volunteer Support Group of UCP of Suffolk, the nation’s first group of individuals with a developmental disability who are trained Red Cross volunteers, taught senior residents from Catholic Charities’ Brentwood location how to prepare for national disasters on September 18th. The volunteers trained residents in conjunction with September being National Preparedness Month. The volunteers gave an informative presentation in which they demonstrated how to assemble “Go Bags,” essentials that people need when evacuating their homes, as well as distributed pamphlets and other important materials. They also showed residents how to prepare for a storm, what to expect during a hurricane and the necessary precautions to take after a storm. “It was exciting that they reached out to the senior population, Assistant Coordinator of
Day Habilitation Services Karen Gramarossa said. “They were very receptive, especially about in case of emergency contacts in their phones and registering for emergency services.” The Red Cross group, which was formed in July 2010, consists of 13 trained volunteers who through peer to peer training and presentations share vital information on disaster preparedness and fire safety. In May 2014, they won the Long Island Imagine Awards’ Pilot Benefit Group Innovation Award for their community efforts. gaining respect on campus. We practice five days a week in the hopes that we can win matches. It’s a violent sport, and many of our guys have gotten injured. There are no pads in rugby, so players face a huge risk. During a game, there are fifteen large men on the other team who want to hurt you. If you have the ball, you need to move. There is no stoppage in play. If the ball carrier goes down, a ruck is formed, and the teams fight for the ball. As the Tighthead Prop,
I’m expected to get in on all of the rucks. I do this willingly, because my teammate is often at the bottom of that pile. I look out for them, and they look out for me. Its a bond that we’ve developed on the Rugby Team. The other players have been like an extended family to me. I’m really liking this team, and I hope that I can play on it for the next four years. Villanova has really proven to be a good fit for me. I like that sense of brotherhood, and the Rugby Team is full of fun people.

Interactive Safety Lesson Students at Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District experienced a one-of-a-kind educational lesson aboard the BOCES School Bus Safety Mobile Classroom on September 19th. Each year, the Harborfields Central School District partners up with Eastern Suffolk BOCES to provide students with an interactive and visually exciting approach to bus safety education called “Safety Sally.” The half hour instructional program
offered each primary class the opportunity to discuss important safety information on and off the school bus. The lesson began with students demonstrating proper bus stop behavior, crossing safety and awareness of universal danger and crossing signals. Students filed onto the transformed school bus where they gathered to watch a short video on bus safety and asked questions in a simulation classroom setting. Concluding the lesson, students one-byone exited through the
emergency door on the back of the bus, fulfilling one of the mandatory New York State Department bus drill requirements. BOCES bus transportation specialist Denise Amato stressed the need of bus safety education for students. “Safety is our number one priority,” she said. “We carry precious cargo in our back seats, so it’s important for students to be properly educated and for bus drivers to continue reinforcing bus safety protocols throughout the school year.”
