All ticketholders were also given the added opportunity to participate in the 5K Trail Fun Run through the wooded grounds of Camp Pa-QuaTuck. Long Island’s finest musicians and poets, along with thousands of music and beer lovers, converged on Camp PaQua-Tuck on Saturday, September 5th and Sunday, September 6th to revel in the excitement of Bradstock XXII. Now in its 22nd year, this two-day festival featured hours of live poetry and Americana, bluegrass, blues, reggae, jam funk rock and jazz music performances. A portion of the sales proceeds benefitted the camp. Retrospect By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’ve been reflecting on my high school days quite a bit lately. Maybe it’s the back to school fever in the air, the specter of autumn and homecoming celebrations on the horizon… or perhaps the fact that I have seen more fellow graduates and former teachers in the last several weeks than I have, well, probably over the last five years. Not that reminiscing is anything new for me, per se, but I suppose the more you reconnect, the more vibrant the faded memories become. What were once old snapshots and slightly dogeared pages of a yearbook are brought to life once again, conjuring happy thoughts of days gone by.

Sure, life has gone on since then and taken us with it in various directions; but there is still something about those good old high school days that brings a smile to the face, mine anyway. They say some of the best friendships are forged during those formative years and that, if you hold on to even a handful of them, you should consider yourself extremely lucky. I tend to agree. As much as we have all moved on – with some pursuing college degrees and careers, others settling down to start a family, and still others on a path all their own – there is a part of me that believes, deep down, we are all simply trying to reclaim that lost innocence of youth, of days when life seemed simpler

and possibilities stretched infinitely before us. Call me crazy, but who among us wouldn’t love to have just a bit of that back? Here’s to nostalgia… here’s to the good old days… here’s to taking a look in the mirror at who we’ve become, and realizing that, for better or worse, we all still resemble that 16 yearold sitting on the bleachers at Homecoming… or passing notes in the back of a classroom… or anxiously studying for exams wondering what the future years would bring. So here we are. No shame in looking back now and then to realize how we arrived at precisely this point, and celebrating the many wonderful memories made along the way.

The loss of innocence is a common, reoccurring theme in high-school level English literature. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, for instance, loss of innocence is seen when Jack attempts to hunt and kill his first pig. In The Kite Runner, Hassan loses his innocence when he is raped by Assef in an alley. In the wellknown novel written by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein, the creature loses his innocence the day he was created, due to Victor abandoning him in his basement. Loss of innocence is even prevalent in movies, such as in Alice in Wonderland, when Alice cluelessly drinks from the “drink me” glass. Some can even argue that she lost her innocence before that, when

she actually tumbled down the rabbit hole. But is the theme of loss of innocence ubiquitous in only literature or cinemas? Not at all. Loss of innocence is a real live thing that people experience daily. And with technology at our fingertips, we are exposed to this recurring theme at increasingly younger ages. Television is vulgar and crude. Commercials are even shockingly inappropriate. Reality TV is showcasing and glamorizing the downfall of society. Children are being exposed to this before they even leave elementary school. Dropping the f-bomb doesn’t have the same shock value it did years ago. The idea of sex and sexual innuendos are thrown around. Children

see this, young adults see this - and it makes everything look like no big deal. No one is scared of anything anymore. No one is innocent anymore. Everyone likes to say that they are, but no one truly is. Everyone has tried things they weren’t supposed to. Everyone has incorporated profane words into their daily vocabulary. We are exposed to this on television, so it’s grown to be acceptable. To sum it up, loss of innocence is a common theme in English literature and Hollywood films. But now, with the help of constant, oneclick technology, we can all lose our innocence as young children. And we can all do it together.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) hosted its 4th Annual Tee-Off for Our Teens tournament on Thursday, September 17th. This year, the agency was hosted at the Maidstone Club in East Hampton to raise more than $100,000 for LICADD’s substance abuse and addiction programs for teens. Participants were treated to a fast speed-of-play tournament under sunny skies, before returning to the Beach Club for a delicious dinner. At a time when so many families know first-hand the pain of having an adolescent with addiction, this event was established to respond to the escalating needs of the community. LICADD’s programs are needed more than ever, and the tournament’s proceeds are specifically earmarked in support of the agency’s evidence-based programs for teens. In addition to providing

teen-focused intervention, treatment and recovery programs, LICADD’s services aim at preventing Long Island’s youth from becoming addicting in the first place. Programs like Too Good for Drugs seek to bolster children and young adults’ selfesteem, confidence and communication with peers and parents, before they are presented with the choice to use alcohol and drugs. Under the Student Assistance Program (SAP), these resources are available in schools throughout Long Island and continue to expand into new school districts each month. For young people displaying signs of alcohol and drug abuse, Teen Intervene offers a month-long combination of individual and parentpresent counseling sessions focused on charting a different direction that includes abstinence and healthier coping strategies.

These services are only a brief snapshot of the wide range of resources that LICADD provides: the agency conducts screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment (SBIRT) and relapse prevention services to individuals and families impacted by substance abuse. LICADD also offers evidence-based prevention programs, community outreach initiatives, a mentoring program for children of incarcerated parents, and advocates for comprehensive and responsible public policy related to addiction. “Our clients are getting younger and younger as the number of teens affected by prescription drug, heroin and alcohol abuse continues to rise each day,” said LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman, LCSW, CASAC. “The expanding need for services is staggering, and we are grateful that many community members

The Elwood Union Free School District is pleased to announce that ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School senior Grace Franzese was named a 2016 Semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Franzese placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Nearly 16,000 high school seniors across the country were named semifinalist with 962 students selected from New York State. National Merit semifinalists have the opportunity to advance in the competition by meeting high academic standards and other rigorous requirements set by the scholarship program. Along with her dedication to academics,

Franzese is an active member of the high school chamber choir, school chairperson for Relay for Life, independent science research student and editor-in-chief of the school’s newspaper. She plans to continue her academic journey and will apply to several prestigious colleges including University of Virginia, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Wake Forest University, with aspirations to double major chemistry and English. “I am very excited and honored to be selected as a semifinalist and I hope to advance further in the program,” said Franzese. Today the waters are filled with energy, Rippled by wind bouncing waves I see. No white caps, only gurgling waves bubble along, A reminder of the well known swan song. The sunset tops the peaks with shiny balls, Plentiful where the reflection of the rays now falls. Just to watch how the water reflects the sun, This in itself is relaxing fun. Presently the wind is coming from the South, Pushing the waters toward the river’s mouth. There, it will connect with the Great South Bay, Where little waves with stronger undertows play.

Community Celebrates Homecoming Students and community members showed their Harborfields pride, donning green and white, in support of the Harborfields High School varsity football team during the annual homecoming festivities on September 19th. In the week leading up to the homecoming game, Harborfields High School students demonstrated their school spirit by wearing creative clothing and accessories inspired by a new theme each day. Spirit week also included the homecoming dance, carnival and the traditional

pep rally and bonfire on Friday evening, where homecoming king Robby Spencer and queen Georgia Viggiano were crowned. The next day, the parade began at the Harborfields Public Library and made its way down Broadway, ending at Harborfields High School. This year’s colorful floats were designed around the theme of “Nations from Around the World,” with each class float representing a different nation. The freshmen represented Australia and the sophomores depicted Great Britain, while the

junior and senior classes portrayed Italy and Egypt, respectively. Halftime included entertaining performances from the school’s marching band and kickline, varsity cheerleading squad, and choreographed routines by members of each grade, dancing to a song associated to their class float theme. Exuberant cheers from students and community members filled the arena, as the Harborfields Tornadoes claimed a 27 to 0 victory over the Amityville Warriors.

McEvoy works mostly with watercolors and occasionally with oils and acrylics. His paintings can be recognized for their colorfully loose and bold style. ‘make your mark and see where it takes you.’ Dressed in polka dot clothing and dot stickers, students and faculty members participated in an International Dot Day assembly led by Principal Dr. Denise Toscano. During the school wide event, students listened to an audio reading of “The Dot” on a projector screen and received sage words of advice from Dr. Toscano. Following the theme of the book, students and faculty harmonious sang and waved their arms to the song “I Believe I Can

Fly” by R. Kelly. Students were dismissed to their classrooms where they continued the celebration by participating in International Dot Day themed lessons and activities. In addition, students received a bracelet with the word “believe” to encourage them to remember the story and believe in themselves. “Make your mark,” said Dr. Toscano. “You can all do it if you work really hard and know that we believe in you.”

Senior Excels

Abigail Wax, a senior at Harborfields High School, participated in the Garcia Materials Research Science and Engineering Center Summer Program at Stony Brook University. During the program, Wax worked with renowned Stony Brook scientists to study the effect of various polymers on endothelial

cell adherence to fibrinogen-coated surfaces. Her study aimed to provide further understanding of thrombosis, the clotting of blood, as well as angiogenesis, how new blood vessels form. Along with other high school students from around the globe, Wax presented her research at

symposium at the end of the program. Wax aspires to use her research to compete at the national level in the prestigious Siemens or Intel competitions. The district commends Wax for her hard work and research success.

“Irene is a dedicated and valuable member of our educational community” stated Superintendent of Schools Robert Banzer. “Her drive for educational advancement and the meaningful relationships she has fostered with students and staff will make her an excellent addition to the central office administrative team.” Ms. McLaughlin will remain at her post as High School principal until a qualified applicant is secured. The expansive search has begun and the district looks to have the position filled by late fall. New to the district is Sean P. Hurley who will take the role of Social Studies Department Chair, K-12. Mr. Hurley comes to the district from the Long Beach City Public Schools where he worked as the Social Studies Curriculum Director, K-12 since 2008. Prior to his administrative role he was at Long Beach High school where he taught Social Studies beginning in 2002, and while there also served as Social Studies Department

Chair. In addition, Mr. Hurley was an Adjunct Professor of Sociology at Syracuse University and the Syracuse University Project Advance Coordinator from 2003-2008. Mr. Hurley received his undergrad from the University of Pittsburgh and his Master of Arts in Teaching at Columbia University Teachers College. He also obtained his Certificate in Educational Administrations from the College of Saint Rose and is completing his Doctor of Education in School Leadership at Concordia University Chicago, School of Graduate Studies. “Mr. Hurley is a seasoned educator who continues to advance his knowledge for the betterment of the students he teaches and the peers he mentors” stated Superintendent Banzer. “His experiences inside the classroom as well as creating curriculum and leading professional development makes him a valuable asset to our district.”

Police Inspector Honored The Town of Huntington Fire Chiefs’ Council recently recognized Suffolk Police Inspector Edward Brady, who recently retired as the Commanding Officer of the Second Precinct. Brady was honored for

his dedication, support and friendship given to the Fire Chiefs and the Town of Huntington Fire and Ambulance Services. Inspector Brady began his career 36 years ago as a police officer in the Second

Precinct, served in various commands throughout the County and returned to the precinct where he retired after nearly six years as the Commanding Officer.

The Northport-East Northport School District is pleased to announce the promotion of High School Principal Irene McLaughlin to Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and the appointment of Sean P. Hurley as Social Studies Department Chair, K-12. Ms. McLaughlin has served as the district’s High School Principal since 2003 and during her tenure has supported the expansion of the AP Program to achieve AP Honor Roll status as well as developed the Academy of Finance to achieve National Program of Distinction recognition. In addition, she has increased academic rigor and achievement through the success of the International Baccalaureate Program, growing IB Diploma candidates from 18 students in 2005 to 56 students in the Class of 2016. Students and faculty at James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District celebrated International Dot Day on September 17th. Inspired by the children’s book The Dot, written by Peter H. Reynolds, International Dot Day is a global initiative that aims to promote creativity, collaboration and courage among young learners. The book shares the story of a girl who begins a journey of self-discovery and risk-taking after her teacher challenges her to

Marathon Support but ultimately became a Fire/Rescue 9-1-1 operator for Suffolk County. He said, “For large scale emergencies, this unit provides a huge benefit to our area. It’s equipped with stretchers, monitoring equipment, oxygen, and though we rarely have to activate it, it’s important that we have it to protect our region.” While Wixted was outside monitoring the MERV, ESBOCES Culinary Arts students were inside. They volunteered to prepare and serve food donated from local restaurants to EMS, police officers, firemen, and local

officials at the Emergency Command Center. Chef Matt Kozak said, “Second year students from Connetquot, Three Village, and Sayville school districts volunteered. It was a way for them to give back to emergency response workers who have done so much for others. It was nice that we were selected as the site for the Emergency Command Center.” Second year Culinary Arts students Chelsea Klages and Liam Ward from Connetquot CSD; Devon LaFitte

and Sean Kobarg from Three Village CSD; and Sean Szentamariay, an adult student from Sayville UFSD, prepared hamburgers, hot dogs, and pasta with sauce to over 300 people. Over at the marathon starting line in Oakdale, five ESBOCES employees challenged themselves to run; two ran to honor special people in their lives. Teaching Assistant Jill Hamill ran the half marathon with a time of 2:15 and “found it to be a very rewarding experience.” She said, “I ran in memory of my dad, Thomas Hill, who passed away from ampullary cancer.” Hamill’s cross country coach at St. Joseph’s College, Matthew Perry, now an ESBOCES special education teacher, cheered her on from the sidelines. School Social Worker Karen Audia and Occupational Therapist Keri Schmidt also ran with times of 2:23 and 2:04 respectively, and are in training for the full marathon in NYC in 2016. Special Education Teacher Daniel Bachety also ran the half marathon with a time of 2:18. Physical Therapist Jennifer NicodemoCapra was honored to be part of the race and highlighted in “Faces of the Race” on the marathon website. Jennifer ran to “honor my mom’s strength to recover from her stroke and to honor all other people who are managing their disabilities with bravery.” From the students at the Emergency Command Center, present and alumnus, to the employees running, everyone affiliated with ESBOCES was thrilled to be a part of local history at the Suffolk County Inaugural Marathon.

Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) was involved with the Suffolk County Inaugural Marathon on many levels. A career and technical education facility in Oakdale was used as the Emergency Command Center, Culinary Arts students prepared and served food at the command center, a former student and Fire/Rescue 9-1-1 operator manned the Major Emergency Response Vehicle (MERV) at the command center, and several employees ran in the race. On Sunday, September 13th, while over 3,600 runners gathered at Hecksher State Park for the start of the Suffolk County Inaugural Marathon, members of the Suffolk County Fire, Rescue & Emergency Services (FRES) set up an Emergency Command Center at Milliken Technical Center (MTC) on Locust Ave. FRES personnel and emergency responders were on hand to respond to any emergencies and work with local, state, and federal officials. ESBOCES Plant Facilities Administrator Keith Anderson said, “The Suffolk County Executive’s Office chose MTC because it suit their needs. Logistically, the facility is close to Montauk Highway and Sunrise Highway. They had ample space to stage their equipment because MTC has multiple parking lots. In case of any emergency, it could be used as a shelter because the facility has several hundred rooms.” Former ESBOCES graduate Joe Wixted, class of 1984, manned the MERV parked in the front of MTC. Still in Session Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is once again offering its weekend respite program, extending the camp’s summer season to make it a year-round destination for children and young adults with disabilities. The fall respite weekends available are as follows: October 2nd-4th, October 9th-11th, November 6th8th, November 20th-22nd, December 4th-6th, and December 18th-20th. Up to 20 campers ages six to 21 are invited to stay. Checkin is at 8 p.m. on Friday evening and campers leave at 3 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. During respite

weekends, the camp will be staffed by Camp Pa-QuaTuck’s counselors and the camp nurse. Campers can participate in various activities, including baking, arts and crafts, games, music and movies. There is a new theme each weekend. Camp resources are packed away until next summer, so campers’ families are reminded to pack sheets, blankets, pillows, towels and toiletries. “We are excited to bring back this wonderful fall program,” says Camp Director Bridget Costello. “Our camp is designed to

give children and young adults the opportunity to be themselves, and parents a chance to relax while their sons and daughters have fun and are cared for in a safe environment.” The cost of each weekend for the remainder of 2015 (Friday to Sunday) is $350. The camp requires a $50 deposit per session which is non-refundable unless registration is canceled 30 days prior to the session. On August 30th, eighty-six bicyclists took part in the First Annual North Fork Bike Ride for Alzheimer’s in support of the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC). After an early morning check-in at Greenport High School, cyclists embarked on a 25mile, 50-mile, 75-mile, or 100-mile loop along the North Fork. Scenic rest areas included Goldsmith’s Inlet Park and Harbes Family Farms, where participants stopped to relax and refuel before culminating their rides back at the school. Groups of cyclists took off intermittently. Fruit, bagels and refreshing drinks were offered at each rest stop along the route. Participants who raised $500 or more received a purple jersey. Every cyclist who raised $350 or more

This year’s event attracted nearly 100 entertainment and sports celebrities, including 30 Hall of Famers from football, baseball, hockey and basketball. Held on four golf courses at Bethpage State Park (Home of past U.S. Opens, as well as future host to the Ryder Cup and Barclays), the March of Dimes welcomed nearly 500 attendees to the tournament. The evening program was emceed by ESPN Sports Anchor Chris Berman and also featured entertaining stand-up comedy from George Lopez. Namath has been a long-time volunteer for the March of Dimes and since 1997 has helped raise over $30 million for the organization through events with him in the leadership role. His namesake Celebrity Golf Classic raised nearly $1.2 million this year, resulting in outstanding double-digit, year-overyear growth. Vet Funds Raised Recently, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was joined by marathon sponsors, various local veteran organizations and local officials to announce that $160,000 was raised for veteran services through the Suffolk County Marathon and Half Marathon held on Sunday, September 13th .
