The event was held on Sept. 2 at the John Glenn practice football field. “This community service day was a tremendous success,” said Dave Shanahan, Elwood’s director of athletics, physical education, health and nurses. “It served to

Helping Hand Rescue Mission provides Thanksgiving food boxes and turkeys for families so they can cook up their special meal and have it together. In 2020, they served over a thousand families with Thanksgiving food boxes and frozen turkeys that were donated and funded by wonderful churches, businesses, organizations, and families. They believe an enormous part of gratitude is giving back, and they’re so thankful to be able to provide with their community, for their community!

Rep. Zeldin Shares Update on Northport VA Medical Center Demolition

Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1) shared a photo update of the progress being made in the demolition project of Buildings 1 and 2 at the Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The contractor completed the demolition of the foundation of Building 1 and is set to begin the foundation portion of Building 2. The project is scheduled to be completed in its entirety by November

24, 2021. “This is the start of a welcome and much needed change at the Northport VA Medical Center. For too long, these vacant buildings have served no purpose and have only obstructed traffic for veterans trying to receive the care they have earned from the VA. I’m hopeful that the successful and efficient completion of this project will significantly improve the Northport

VA’s infrastructure and veterans’ access to care,” said Congressman Zeldin. Congressman Zeldin has long advocated for the destruction of these unused buildings to allow for infrastructure enhancements that will make the rest of the VA campus more accessible for patients and their families. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is overseeing the project.

Melville Student Among 2021 International Young Eco-Hero Award Winners Dylan D’Agate, a 16 year-old from Melville, New York, is one of 25 young environmental activists from across the globe honored by Action For Nature (AFN) as a 2021 International Young Eco-Hero, an award that recognizes eco-conscious youth ages 8 to 16 who are taking crucial steps to solve tough environmental problems. Winners of the International Young EcoHero Award are selected by a panel of independent judges, including experts in environmental science, biology, and education. Since 2003, Action For Nature has recognized more than 300 Eco-Heroes from over 30 countries and 25 U.S. states. Dylan received an Honorable Mention in the 15-16 year-old category for his project, Monster in the Water: Fighting Back Against Harmful Algal Blooms. Growing up in Long Island, Dylan D’Agate was all too familiar with toxic algal blooms that are becoming more and more common around

Dylan decided to write a children’s book – Monster in the Water: Fighting Back Against Harmful Algal Blooms – to raise awareness about the problem and to motivate young people to act to address algal blooms and other environmental problems in their communities. A portion of the book’s proceeds will be donated to organizations that work on water security issues. “Kids like Dylan have shown that the next generation of leaders is here, and they are refusing to wait to solve the world’s most

pressing environmental challenges,” said Beryl Kay, president of Action For Nature, an international non-profit organization that encourages young people to nurture a love and respect for the Earth and to take personal action to improve the environment. “The projects that these young people created will not only have real, positive impacts on their communities, they will also help solve global climate challenges and inspire others – no matter what age – to consider what they can do to help.” “As a young environmentalist, I always felt I had to wait until I was older to make a difference, which I now realize is not true,” said Dylan D’Agate. “Age is not a barrier to making an impact in our world. The only barriers are those we place on ourselves. HPV Vaccination Though there may not be a cancer vaccine, that does not mean that vaccinations cannot play a role in cancer prevention. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some cancers, including cervical cancer and cancers of the vulva and oropharynx, are caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV. The CDC notes that the HPV vaccine protects people against the types of HPV that most often cause cancers. Adults can discuss the benefits of HPV vaccinations with their physicians, as the CDC notes that adults between the ages of 27 and 45 may have already been exposed to HPV, meaning the HPV vaccination will provide less benefit. Parents should know that the CDC recommends the HPV vaccination for preteens aged 11 to 12 years.

Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings. The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health.
